Hello everyone ;
i just read an article stat that old phones with weak memory 512mg didnt get any new updates but this could be changed with new android !
it says that and i copy from it : ' One important feature will be the ability of low memory models to update to newer builds of Android. Low memory handsets made by Huawei, Samsung and ZTE that have 512MB of RAM inside, are at a major disadvantage to today's mid to high-range models that are packed with 2 to 3GB of the stuff. These low memory models usually are not updated to newer builds of Android. That could change with Android 4.4. '
idk but i guess if they did it it will be such a great news for old beloved old devices like my xperia ray !!:fingers-crossed:

Unfortunately, not likely that older phones will get it, New but even mid and low-end phones might get it for sure.

I think 4.4 will just run good on low-end devices and it might be easier to port to those devices. But I'd wager quite a lot that Sony isn't going to bother with our phone anymore, 18 months have passed and they have dozens of other devices to support.
No Qualcomm support - no official 4.4 for our devices, get over it. We can only hope to get KitKat beacuse of Letama or Rayman.

Letama doesnt have a XS anymore however ,soon enough i will be taking over letamas 4.3 project and just maybe i may be able to port 4.4 to xperia s. I assume RaymanFX will build 4.4 via CM10 it seems like he always has
also sony has compltely abandoned these old devices, most of the contracts end next year but sony dont care enough to even look in this direction.
they dont even care about the Xperia Z and more, then again cant blame them, they are almost bankrupt again :/
try to keep your hopes up , although xperia S is a orphan we have got some great devs
No KitKat 4.4 for Galaxy Nexus.

I don't really think there would be anymore support or anything as such for SXS.. SONY has and completely will abandon SXS.. Already as Envious said SXZ is also old now and will soon be obsolete in another year.. Tech keeps on moving guys, everything gets old.. U just gotta live with it..

Since Galaxy Nexus even is abandoned, then Why are there rumors in the first place.. Its so confirmed that they themselves have said its OLD and crossed 18 months.. So i guess old in their words mean basic low end budget devices.. Its like in "Pink Panther 2" where the HERO does both Good Cop Bad Cop Routine all by himself.. :silly: And still we gotta accept it..!!! Don't get any hopes up YET guys..
I dont think any old device will get 4.4 unless its a part of some new licence
I guess its good for old devices to run newer android , 4.3 is extremely smooth compared to 4.2 and 4.1 (on xs)
Speaking of which
The first thing im trying to fix with letamas 4.3 build is the HDMI and the graphics crashes and errors
Just waiting for source code

@RaymanFX This is the source to 4.4 already.. I hope this helps.. Thanks to @fundoozzz.. :good:
Not gonna happen guys. Xperia S is pretty much EOL. I will be getting my new phone tomorrow. So I'm ready to leave this place
4.4 Will not be given by sony as the phone is now classed as "discontinued" and is a archived sony phone. I don't know if the end of support for updates has been done yet if not they can update it but very unwilling because they have lots of newer phones.
Most likely a developer will port it over
The only thing that I'm concerned of is, will it run smoother than other ported JB ROMs.

It definitely should as according to google it will run smooth on devices with mere 512mb of RAM.
The major challenges is hacking the code for our soc as it has been discontinued by arm too..
If Google is not upgrading the Galaxy Nexus, why are you hoping Sony will not do the same?

Hey guys. Did you see Sony's details about KitKat? They said they were only mentioning the first few phones to get KitKat but do you think we'll get it in the new year? I remember past Sony updates did happen Dec-Feb.
http://www.sonyrumors.net/2013/11/06/kitkat-xperia-devices-features/
Sony News - On Jelly Bean 4.3 & Kit Kat 4.4…
If the Sony XPERIA M/Dual was to be upgraded to Android v4.4 [on paper] we'd have a very efficient phone.
Android v4.3 and Android v4.4 are about refining the existing implementation of Android.
It's just the number of little things like Miracast certification, OpenGL ES 3.0, optimised 2D rendering, memory optimisation and etc, that would make an already very competent phone a true delight to own.
I for one will be very interested to read where Sony decides to slot the XPERIA M regarding future Android OS updates, as Android v4.4 is really tailor make for such a device (as I read it)
The XPERIA L, XPERIA M and XPERIA C are all very conspicuous in their absence of any mention, regarded future Android upgrades.
There only problem for the big manufacturers is that revamping low-mid range phones with a streamlined version of android means they sell less because people change less often as their device that was on the way out now functions better than it did new.
I'm not really taking about the xperia M as this is still very new but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony only updated this years phones to 4.4. Tbh anything older probably has more dev work anyway so experienced users will get it via a ton instead of a don't release. Unfortunately we're probably low priority for Sony to update soon (all the flagships will come first) being a mid-low end phone and we also don't have substantial ROM support yet either to get it via CM or AOSP or Slimroms right now. It'll be interesting how it plays out and what we get when.
Sent from my C1905 using xda app-developers app
As for the M not being mentioned, they did say that it is just the first wave of devices, not the last. For any of us that owned Xperia phones in the last few years, you will have seen that the more expensive devices tend to go first, it's not unusual.
Besides the M and Dual, there is the L and C. I would be stunned if these devices get left on 4.1-4.3. I'd be happy with KitKat. :victory:
looks like it will take long time for xperia m, first wave of xperia phone its for z series (from now on).. maybe next years we will get that feature and the only we can do now is just waiting
I think no one will you Stock when CM or AOSP arrives. So dont fuss on sony and dont make this discussion long.

My friend got the Xperia Z months ago. I asked him did he have any custom ROMs. He said no and I asked why. He said that everything works great on his phone on stock firmware.
I've owned Xperia phones from every year. Every year I used custom ROMs. Until this year, that is. With the stock firmware on this phone, I have no desire to try custom ROMs. Now I understand what my friend meant.
Some of us like stock firmware. Plus, it's a bonus that you know you can send your phone for official repair and they won't reject it because you modified the phone.
I feel same for my xperia M not in the mood of customizing it yet

I think you are missing one crucial point. That price difference between Z and M. The update support Z gets as compare to M is huge. Thats why custom roms are made. So if you want regular update get Z.

No news, could still be good news.
Sony has started to identify potential Android upgrade paths on the software support pages for circa 2013 phones.
Again it is noted that all is quiet(22-NOV) on the XPERIA M front with no new information at this time.
Example of the Sony XPERIA SP Android upgrade path seen towards the bottom of the web page.

I(not an informed rep) note the XPERIA M is the only Android device using the MSM8227 SoC that I can find... Oh dear.
Maybe Qualcomm will just bin any Android upgrade support, if it requires to much effort for so few Android devices..
This could mean the Sony XPERIA M may be one of the few phones not to advance beyond the Android version it was released on.
This is just something to think about as I'm NOT an engineer and so don't go running off waving your hands about screaming the sky is falling... it's just my observation and something to consider.

I hope that that poster didn't get away with it. That's ridiculous. Since when is it not possible to post an opinion/guess/observation?
Yep, any of us that have owned Xperia 2012/2013 devices may have noticed that mid-tier devices often do get upgrades to major Android revisions, just not the first batch, which makes sense. I think the M will get it, maybe March or so.
Dudes/Dudettes, we're all good.
I didn't really like my own comment that much anyway.
I just worded my retraction poorly and come across as a bit of a drama queen. Fixed it now.
We're in a highly speculate thread until Sony provides confirmation on the direction the XPERIA M will take, so we can except augments from all points of view.
The truth is out there, hopefully we'll know soon.

guys Xperia M is not mid tier to sony..
for them 15000+ is mid tier..
if u see the list for update they has plan to update SP,T,TX,V
all are 15000+
they missed their J,miro...which 15000-
what i m saying is just dont have too much believe and get angry on sony, and dont believe the some sites info...
just wait for <1 year we can see whether SONY give or not giving the update to Xperia M..
but i hope they would alteast give any one update to M like 4.3 or 4.4 in future ... since they didnt update Xperia M to 4.2[maybe planning to jump version instead of wasting time in 4.2]
So what is the Xperia E? The E and M are definitely not even close in terms of specs.
Maybe it's market-dependent. I live in Europe. Here, roughly the prices are:
Xperia E- €60
Xperia M - €250
Xperia SP €350
Xperia Z - €500
The Xperia M is mid-tier in Europe. In no universe is a €250 phone budget. I cannot be sure of every maket outside Europe but I can be here.
p.s. The Xperia Go in 2013 was updated to JellyBean. That was mid-tier.
I know that the M struggled to get a place on XDA for a long time, it wasn't even indexed when it was put in here, so it was quite hard to find. Then a lot of dev work took off on other sites. That's a loss for XDA.
I just checked out the Xperia E. What do you know? It's not in the bin section. It has a place with the other phones. I cannot imagine that the M really has less activity than the E. The E is in economical terms, a budget device. The Xperia M is not. It is a mid-tier device. Now what? The screen isn't phablet size therefore it's not worthy?
I hope that when the decisions are made, an international perspective is taken. I know that the M has been released in the US, but it's used all over the world, as our users show. It's a global-release phone.
Does anyone know more about how this stuff is figured out?
I have previosly owned HTC Wildfire s, budget phone, but there are tons of customr roms, krenels, recovery and mod for it. I've switched to Xperia M now and really hope that support for this phone will go better Sorry for spelling mistakes, if there are ones...

First of Sony xperia M hasn't struggle to make place on XDA, it just take couples of PMs to right people that's all(which i have done to get this forum). and regarding to development this device is new in the market as compare to E, So keep it quite and you will get tons of roms and kernels, you just need to wait

It did struggle on XDA. I followed the New Device Request thread for a couple of months, I saw all the +Xperia M requests. I had it in my signature for about 2 months, encouraging others to request. Every once in a while a Mod would say 'we're considering between these devices now'. Page after page showed many requests and it still took a really long time. Now it's in the XDA bin. Is it not expensive enough? Is that the problem?
It was launched in August. This is mid-November. I've owned Sony (+Ericsson) devices and have been rooting, unlocking, modding, contributing, adding tutorials for Sony 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 devices, but I still think it's really unusual.

AFAIK posting request on that thread is a very long and hard process to gain a thread on XDA, To get a forum on XDA it just needs A supporting RC/RD/RT or maybe a moderator. yes the device was launched in August but also please consider its availability on different countries and its price range. In my town this device was available from September. So it will take some time to get speed pal.

Mini note in general - A poster mentioned 'impatience' regarding waiting for custom ROMS/kernels. I never mentioned these, it's not about custom ROMS/kernels.
Also, I listened to a technology podcast discussion the other day, they discussed the 'mobile market has shifted to an upgrade-a-phone-per-year model'. I guess that's because of the rate of innovation. So, by the time the M moves out of the bin Sony will have 6 new phones.

Development For Xperia M
Hi,
Im new to this forum especially as I have just recently purchased this handset after upgrading from the Xperia Arc S which I would like to say is a good phone but im looking to take my skills to a new level.
I did a lot of rom testing on the Arc S even up to the CM11 4.4 Kitkat rom that was released for this phone.
I am however looking to do development work for this phone as well and maybe work on porting some of my apps and mods from ICS upto JB with help from anyone who is interested.
Hope people maybe interested and lets see what we can do to get people interested in this device
Thanks
Rob Nightingale

Hi! Well, seeing as there's revolution in the issue of globalization of the device, I want to clarify that just earlier this month came to Argentina, we are talking at the beginning of 2014, when months went on the market, so to not despair there are still places where it spread mobile magnificent. I hope I have been helpful, thank you very much and greetings.
And sorry for my English, I used a translator, because I did not communicate fluently.
Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I saw something that doesn't get in my head: I can't understand why a device that wasn't even released (Xperia M2) has a dedicated forum section in the main page, while Xperia M is in low-activity section. Yes, we don't have a lot of kernels and custom ROMs available right now for Xperia M, but that's a lot compared to the dedicated forum section Xperia M2 got, many of them without any post at all :silly:

To even open a new forum many things are taken into consideration. One of them is the shown interest of devs for the said device and another the expected popularity.
These may be some of the reasons.
As for Xperia M being into Low Activity, as an Xpeia M user, what's the difference?
Xperia M is low mid ranger device
Xperia L has much more
Like 8 MP camra with stunning featurrs
Processor is little faster then M
8 GB internal storage
4.3 inches display
But I think that xperia M shouldn't be included in low activity section.
It is low mid ranger device

So what?
It's not caused by that how our device is... It's caused because there is still not much roms/kernels for our device. In Xperia l cause it was much more easier for developers to get kk roms because it has 4.4 aosp sources from Sony.

Xperia L may have KK AOSP sources but still lacks an official 4.3 update, never confirmed or even rumored by Sony. And for the guys saying that Xperia L is way better than Xperia M, just compare the specs: Xperia L is just a Xperia M with better camera and different design, and that's all, everything else remains the same, same amount of RAM, same GPU and same CPU.
And before someone says that XL have a bigger screen, yes, it has a 0.3" bigger screen, but at the same resolution of XM, making its PPI lower than Xperia M screen (228 ppi vs 245 ppi). In Xperia M advantage we have a dual SIM version, while Xperia L don't. But all this Xperia L vs Xperia M talk is off-topic, the thing is that for me Xperia M does deserve a better place in XDA forums, but appears that only I think so :silly:

actually L has better cpu[just see specs of cpu name and number]
it can play 1080p
but still m is not low activity device...
anyways no problem where it is...[atleast its here]
I'm coming to this device after using an xperia mini ST15i for 3 years. My decision was based on the M's hardware and price.I just needed to double my hardware specs as cheaply as possible.
I can't really explain the lack of love for this xperia to be honest.
The mini has a huge database of custom ROMS and Kernels compared to the M which is miles ahead in my opinion.I even flashed a KitKat Rom stable enough for everyday use in the last 2 months!
Just wanted to share my frustration, that's all.
Also I'd like to thank all the devs working for the Xperia M!
Please keep up the good work!

Not sent from my xPERIA M.
Welcome friend from the old fourm,
Don't be upset the phone is still new, and there are few devs here atm.
The stock fw is very good in my opinion; it does not lag, and very smooth.
Beside that we are going to have official android 4.3 update from sony soon.
So it is early to flash custom/cooked roms.
And for cm roms, we have fxp support now..!

Enjoy your new device and cheer-up

U can't compare the mini with M, the mini was in the first wave in 2011, at that time there was just a dozen of good android devices to buy, therefore many devs where working on them, but now the huge variety of handset's made the development focused on flagships.
I came from live with Walkman too but i think the official firmware is good enough and almost bug free,
Just unlock ur BL install cwm, root.and enjoy.

Well,I unlocked it,rooted it and installed a custom Kernel with CWM (Elixer).
All during the first day I got the phone in my hands.
Still,I cant wait to try some of the other kernels just to see how much performance I can get out of it!
Any suggestions? I m thinking about flashing KTT Kernel.
Seems a bit better than Elixer.

If you're talking about official update - no. Sony stopped development for out phone with 4.1.2
But I'm sure there will be unofficial ROM here on XDA
yes i'm talking about unofficial of course
but i saw that raymanfx is no longer here in xperia s section so i thought that it might take a while to get the update on our device
My crystal ball isn't very good, we can't predict yet what drivers are going to be broken with Android L. If not much changes, a port to Android L is very likely, but otherwise we'll be stuck at KK or maybe the Android L builds will be less functional. All things we can't know yet.
Also, RaymanFX isn't the only developer for the fuji platform so if he develops for a bunch of other devices now, that doesn't mean our devices are getting no love. We have Android 4.4.4 based ROMs already, what more could we ask for at the moment?
To see if Android L will be supported, the buildable sources for the final version will need to be released. Right now is much too early to speculate. I'm quite hopeful as well, although I'm planning on getting the next Nexus phone or a Nexus 5 if I can't wait any longer, having a phone for 2 years is enough for me.
android L on xperia s
clearly no android L will be coming to xperia s
How to know when ?

Many people said that for KitKat .
Xperia S has the necessary power, remains to be seen for basic compatibility...
Xperia S has a really good hardware, I hope it will be enough for Android L
U know what
Sony should learn from Motorola
They are updating old handsets to kitkat like droid Razer and atrix HD.AND SONY doesn't

Are we going to be ranting about this again? Those Motorola devices don't have a Snapdragon S3, do they? No, the Razr HD and M have an S4 Plus (the older Razr doesn't get an update to KK), and the Atrix HD also has an S4 Plus. You see where I'm getting at? I'm pretty sure we would have gotten to Android 4.2 if Qualcomm hadn't dropped the Snapdragon S3. It's a hardware problem, can you still not get that by now?
Yeah Sony shouldn't have used such an old SoC, we all knew that but we still bought the thing. Right now the phone is over 2 and a half years old, you can't expect any updates anymore, not even Motorola does that: Atrix HD and those Razr's aren't 2 years old yet.
I'm not saying Sony isn't to blame, the Xperia T should have gotten KitKat but didn't, and it took way too long to get KitKat on even the newer devices. It's insane to see Sony take over half a year while Motorola is faster than the Google Play Edition devices. The Sony skin isn't even that different from Holo.
If quick official updates are important to you, learn your lesson and get a Nexus or GPE device. Moaning about what Sony should do doesn't help since A) the hardware doesn't support it (without straying from official drivers) and B) Sony will never learn. Updates have been an issue since the Xperia X10, the very first Android phone they made.
But the great thing about Android is how open it is, at least compared to other handset os'es, so at least we're getting unofficial KitKat updates and I bet there will be Android L ports. If not for RaymanFX, deedwar and the other dev's, I would have gotten a Nexus 5 months ago.
