Question about firmware updates - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a G4 a month or so ago through Craigslist. The guy I met up with got the phone early through some kind of LG early adopter program. The phone is in perfect shape and everything works great.
I'm noticing that I still don't have a stagefright patch though. This is an unbranded, unlocked phone. I'm not sure why LG Bridge doesn't have an update for me, but people with carrier branded G4s have stagefright fixes.
Is there a firmware update I should manually apply or am I just being impatient?
Doing the check here: http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/auth_model_check2.jsp?esn=
It says I'm LG H815 AUSAVKS if it helps. Anyone else with this same model?
Thank you in advance!

Here's a screenshot of software info... figure I should probably include this.

I'm using a carrier branded G4, from Sprint, and there is no stagefright patch available yet (to my knowledge). That T-mobile fix you posted was just a matter of hours ago right? Maybe the carriers are starting to roll out the updates shortly, and maybe LG will include an update for unbranded?

May be the case. It seems unusual for carrier branded phones to get an update before unbranded... even if it's only a matter of hours. Generally carrier branded means more QA testing and therefore delayed availability.

[Q][SOLVED] Question about unlocked phones in the UK?

Hi all,
I've never purchased a Unlocked Flagship and This might be a silly question..
I'm thinking about purchasing the Device from Carphonewarehouse(In the UK), Which are Sim-Free.
If I insert my sim from G2 (Which I have on contract), Would they still control OTAs for the G4?
Or would I get updates (Almost) instantly as they roll out from LG?
Sorry for the silly question!
Regards,
J.
Hi
No question is silly. You would get updates as they are rolled out by LG rather than a carrier specific update because the update will be linked to your phone rather than you carrier which would be the case if you had bought the phone as part of a contract
Hope that helps

Quite right, I actually got mine from Carphonewarehouse and it was updated out of the box to the latest release from LG.

That's superb, Thank you both for the answers!
I've only ever had Contract upgrades so I didn't know how the updates worked with Unlocked ones.
Even contract phones(except iPhone) are simfree from Carphone Warehouse.
I just got my G4 from there today.

Why in the hell is T-Mobile getting a Stagefright patch before vanilla h815?

I just dont get it. The device manufacturers always want to blame the carriers for patch delays. So here I am sitting on my international H815(eu) figuring since this is a broad scope device it will get the update before the carriers specific devices. Then today I see T-Mobile's model is getting a stagefright update. WTH?!!? Anyone got any good insight on whats going on here?
No idea, but I'm a little irritated too. Seems like it would make MORE sense to push the update to unlocked, unbranded US devices before T-Mobile for testing simply because there are presumably less of us.
My guess (and probably wrong) is that TMo was picked to do the roll out, in batches, so that if there are any issues, it can be stopped & rectified quickly. The patch would be tested on one phone variant & one carrier.
Also, the risk of this affecting someone is very low.
I just flashed the KDZ...
Can't you guys do the same?

How do I tell where my G4 came from?

I have a G4 that I thought was SIM free, bought from CEX - I'm in the UK and it has no carrier splash screen, no carrier apps or random antivirus trials. To all intents and purposes it is stock. However today I received an update to software version v10G-234-20. This is not Marshmallow and it ran in at 343.19MB. I've seen no mention of it being released anywhere, which leads me to assume that it is an update from at least a month ago. The model number is LG-H815. I check for updates very regularly so this update certainly hadn't been available for my device a couple of days ago.
So my question is, why is this update only being pushed through now? And does it mean my device will get Marshmallow incredibly slowly too?
Thanks in advance, and apologies if this has already been asked/answered before, but I couldn't see it anywhere.

Quick question regarding software updates. Also, a warning about buying a G8S

So I'm from Europe and bought the G8 from eBay (US seller). It hasn't arrived yet, but I'd rather know now. It says it's GSM unlocked and it should work with my carrier, so no problem there apparently.
But regarding software updates, will I get OTA updates even when I'm using a completely different carrier? I'm not gonna be using AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint SIM card. I will be using an European SIM. so will I still receive over-the-air updates normally or will I have to flash a different KDZ? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Also I must warn people about the G8S. I think everyone knows by now it's the crappier version of the G8. I've had it for a while but unfortunately I dropped it once and now there's a huge crack on the back. The fall also appeared to have affected the wide angle camera which is unusable now (there's some white dots all over when taking pictures or filming videos). It's a VERY fragile phone so just think twice and perhaps consider buying the G8 (which has the MIL-STD-810G rating) instead, from sellers on Ebay that ship internationally.

It should recieve otas, but for some reason people here have had problems. You probably bought a Sprint phone, and I also bought that and recieved otas while being on a different network. I don't know if being in Europe makes a difference

Yes they should all work. That's just wierd glitches by chance that guy is talking about. I even uninstalled all Sprint stuff and still recieved otas
In the case of AT&T models, it is not a glitch: They are known to only provide updates if you're an AT&T postpaid customer or on one of a few AT&T MVNOs. Strangely, AT&T-owned Cricket isn't one of them (last I heard). AT&T also doesn't publish KDZs, so you cannot update manually. Check the V30, V35 and V40 forums, you'll find lots of threads discussing this.
T-Mobile models generally get OTA updates no matter which network you're on. They also publish KDZs, so you can update manually. Same with Verizon. Sprint doesn't publish KDZs, but I believe their models do receive OTA updates, even on other networks.
While it would seem that T-Mobile models are more attractive because of this, the opposite is generally true, since they are very hard to carrier unlock: They can ONLY be unlocked with T-Mobile's Device Unlock app, NOT with codes from 3rd parties. Even if you buy a carrier unlocked T-Mobile phone on eBay or Amazon, it will be re-locked if you ever send it to LG for repair or replacement. And T-Mobile will NOT grant unlock in those cases, unless you are a T-Mobile customer in good standing and the phone has been on their network for some time (40 days postpaid or 1 year prepaid).
There is a reason why AT&T and T-Mobile models ("GSM unlocked") are generally cheaper on eBay and elsewhere.

When talking used G8 units on eBay, I found that too. But if you're looking for new units (warrantied) and/or outside eBay those "GSM unlocked" models (G820TM and G820UA) seem to dominate and have the lowest prices.
It generally varies with the phone models: In the V30 market the Sprint LS998 has become one of the most attractive among US models (other than the rare open-market US998U and US998R) and thus often they're more expensive. In the V35 market, AT&T models flood the market (V350AWM).
I really don't know what you're doing with your phones but I've been using my G8s since release day and even though it fell hard SEVERAL times the only issue I have is a little deep scratch on the display.
The case it shipped with I only used 50% of the time because I love the glossy, mirror-like finish of the back glass.

Did you mean to post in this thread, which is about software updates?

Which version of the LG G8 to get today for trouble free OTA updates?

I currently have a G7 ULM which was the unlocked version for the US. I bout it from Google Fi, but this phone since it is not carrier specific will never be updated by LG. Still on Android 9.
Other versions of the G7 have received OTA updates.
So I wonder which version of the LG G8 I should buy in order to not get stuck (apparently they will update up to Android 11 for this model)
But I need a GSM unlocked G8 that I can update OTA using any carrier other than the one it is tied to.
Which one would you recommend for this and also for less bloatware etc?
I really like having the fingerprint sensor on the back and it seems that the LG G8 is the last iteration of phones from LG with this feature and it is an upgrade from the G7. (which is great in my opinion)
It is cheap here in the US too.
Suggestions appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
Just came across your post. I have an unlocked LG G8 that I purchased from Best Buy running on Verizon. I have had some OTA updates but, as you know, LG is slow with them. I am on Android 10 with the 4/1/21 security patch. They say that it's supposed to get Android 11; keeping my fingers crossed. I hope this helps a little.

thanks man! You are the only one who likes pink floyd apparently lol..
I have Tmobile and would need a version that works with tmobile.. not sure which one to get. The unlocked versions are harder to get updates because according to a rep from LG they need to test with many carriers before they release the OTA update. May or may not be true.
But thanks for your input !

Yep, I do like Pink Floyd. Amazon does have some lg g8’s both unlocked and locked to t-mobile. Most of them seem to be “renewed”, as they put it. T-mobile locked would be best as long as t-mobile keeps up on their updates. Hopefully lg will keep their promise to bring out Android 11 for these phones.
I hope that you’re able to find a good deal.
