Coincidentally (perhaps), since the last update (Stagefright patch), my GPS has been rendered almost unusable. No physical damage to the phone. Not temp rooting (if I can't run Cyanogen or custom ROM root isn't useful to me). But since then, the GPS is absolutely broken. I drive truck all day and I use my GPS A LOT so I'm not some dude just getting directions to the store. It was working great, now it's almost useless. Do apps like GPS Fix actually do something? How can they without being able to write to system? Any input is appreciated here. I don't wanna do a warranty because AT&T will just send me someone else's problem.

My GPS has always been hit or miss. Some days it works perfectly and some days (always when I have an Apple lover in my car) it constantly loses signal. Usually if I restart my phone, it starts working again
Mine has worked solidly since last December/January, whenever I got this one. Now it's useless to me. I'm a driver. Gotta have my GPS.

Glad to hear it. It'll be interesting to see if there is in fact a subset of folks on the T3 that have this issue. There has been a constant complaint of folks having issues on the 910T, as well as 910A phones., I had an A before this one, and it was not perfect, but livable.
I suspect that whomever sold this one to me sold because of bad GPS.
Here's another question for those with (& without) problems: is your Note near your USB Charger (how close?) or your car radios? I've been reading up in some GPS forums that USB Chargers and RF interference could be the culprit. Moved my Note about 2.5' from the charger (about 12" from stereo) and so far today: near-perfect. Thoughts?

I've never really had a problem until lollipop. I even went as far as taking it to ATT and they wiped it and reflashed lollipop. Worked for a bit. Not its VERY intermittent. Debating just swapping it out for another note

Put it back next to charger and radio: instant loss of lock. Put it back away from them: to about thirty seconds to lock. Hasn't lost since. My old mount broke and I've been using a vent mount. This places it near radio and charger. Happened around same time as last update. I may have found culprit. Will update within 48 hours.

I have been having issues with GPS acquiring/losing lock since Lolipop update. To fix them I tried usual methods suggested on many forums: clearing cache and factory reset. This did not work. Yesterday I visited local AT&T Device Support Center (I did not now they existed before that). In the center they suggested that "rebuilding" the software on my phone might help. I asked if this was the same as factory reset and they replied "No". Now, I do not know what it was but it looks like it helped. I had about one hour of driving since then with no GPS issues at all. The procedure took about 10 minutes. I suspect that this was something like clean install of OS as compared to in-place upgrade that we get with regular OS updates. Just my two cents. BTW, one can make an appointment to such center on-line (and there was no wait at all in my case).
No service center in Pittsburgh. Anyhow, it didn't fail at all today. I'm 99% certain now it was interference from the radio. I'm gonna repeat yesterday's experiment tomorrow and see what happens.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
Okay, I'm ready to call it. It is DEFINITELY interference and proximity to the stereo that's causing the problem. Both in my car and truck. When moved away from the stereo, it works perfectly. Allow me to illustrate:

While in position "B," GPS will absolutely not work. It loses lock within 60 seconds. Move it back to position "A " and it establishes lock within thirty seconds and keeps it. Whew. My problem is solved! Thanks for being a sounding board, gentlemen. Hope this helps some of you, too.

Today I tried the above recommendation and it did seem to work if I held the phone farther away from my dash. Not sure if its the radio or car charger, but if I hold the phone closer towards the middle console/back of the car and not the front window, I did not have any signal issues

My money is on RF interference from the radio. Unplugging the charger did nothing in my truck or car to fix the problem. According to one of those GPS forums, guys were moving their GPS antennas outside their car to get signal. Several of them cited the radio as the source of the interference and now I see how they got that. Those antennas would undoubtedly be stronger than ours, and if they didn't work...

Also of note, my Note GPS works when placed sitting in front of these instrument cluster. So not just general electronics interference.

I've noticed on my s3 when I hold the phone the db signal goes up by a lot and eventually 4g goes to edge. The db goes up as well on edge. In particular when holding it with my left hand and my palm is covering majoring of the bottom left of the phone. If I put the phone down the db starts decreasing and eventually it goes back to 4g. Is this normal for T-Mobile devices? This only seems to happen where you have low signal already like indoors. Dbm between 99-105.
You can test db signal in settings > about device > status > signal strength. Lower the db the better.
Here is a video of me just flipping the phone upside down to get 4g back. I even tried leaving it in either position for a while just to show you that it doesnt change till after I flip it over either directions. DBM will usually spike up between 10-20 dbm when I hold the phone the way I'm holding it and if you reach about 111-113 then it will switch over. 20 dbm seems a lot of signal to lose but I'm not sure if that range is normal for all gsm phones. Either way, it sucks that this is happening so I have to make sure I hold the phone with either my right hand or hold it by the top half only.

Edit: my phone does not have this issue. I had 73 dBm 17 asu the entire time, whether I held the phone (tried different ways of holding it as well) or not.

I have a thin case and it doesn't help much. Maybe a thicker one but I don't really wanna use one of those. I'm uploading a video about this issue in a bit.

If this is normal for T-Mobile then it sucks for me then. I just switched to them a couple of days ago. Edge is really slow for me. Speedtest shows avg 14kbps dl speeds. For those that have migrated like me I think this is useful information.

Is this true for cdma as well? Never had my sprint wimax go to 3g just by holding it. The big deal for me is it goes to edge which is painstakingly slow. I signed up for 5gb plan so was hoping to utilize it.

The antenna runs down the left side, from top to bottom. I'd imagine covering it with your hand would effect signal to some extent. Any phone that has an antenna placed along the side or bottom you'll most likely notice this with,I think that's one of the reasons MOTO packed all their crap in the top and gave it a hump.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Deat...lphones-cases-do-not-help-much-either_id17155
Yes all phones do but the GS3 on tmibile suffers much then the rest I guess cause of there network structure ,having said that no problems with me ,bars go down but only if I hold the phone in a tight grip seems to have problems (which I don't hold it like that)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
So it looks like holding the phone with my right hand the db signal barely changes and if it does it not drastic as if I held it with the left hand. It also would stay on 4g. If I open the back I noticed there's a W1 and W2 on the bottom left (phone facing me) so this is the area where my palm rest when I hold it with my left hand. I have a thin .07mm case but it still doesnt help. For now I guess I can hold it with my right hand but that's really stupid that I have to hold it a certain way but I dont have a choice at this time. Maybe a thicker case might help. Any other suggestion?
I can't believe I'm resorting to this but its working for the most part. DB signal staying within 105-111 and not going to Edge.

I agree it is a bit silly but I was trying to create more barrier between my Palm and that particular area of the phone to reduce signal degradation while holding the phone with my left hand. Compared to holding it with my right where there is less contact in that area which increases my 4g signal acquisition.

I recieved a home signal box from three today,
I've got to say how impressed I am I get full 5 bar signal any where in my house or garden and so far I haven't had a single dropout woohoooo no more missed calls
if you want one for free phone them tell em you only get signal at the top of your house but when outside signal works fine and that you've been a loyal customer and put up with bad signal for years it worked for me otherwise they will charge £150 for the box
They gave me 2 options 1. Was to have a £5.50 knocked of my bill every month or 2. a home signal box for free

I can see these femtocells becoming popular for mobile operators to give away for free. They can potentially use them in a similar way to the BT Openzone SSID enabled in BT's routers.
I wonder how much of your broadband data they use?
I haven't checked how much data it uses I have a 50mb internet connection soon it will be 120mb so I have no need to worry about data it requires 1mb connection if your on a data plan I'd be careful

It can be a bit of a battle to get one of these boxes.
Unfortunately I'm a sim only customer, out of contract and my wife is a sim only customer with about 5 months left but they wouldn't budge from a £50 charge. I've asked for the complaints team to call me but I doubt I'll get anywhere.
You can only get one for free if you are still on a 'handset' contract rather than sim only and you say the right thing.
I told the second line support network people (who call you back a few days after your complaint) that I've noticed poor signal in the house since the beginning of the year. I told them that my phone no longer roams onto a 2G signal in the house (they removed roaming in my area towards the end of last year) and that things got even worse in spring when the trees in my garden started to come out in leaf. I said that the only place I can get a signal next to an upstairs window which makes a mobile phone useless if it only works in one place in the house. I also told them that the phone also switches to 'Emergency calls only' whilst in the house.
You need to say that you are perfectly happy with the Three signal elsewhere, whilst out and about, and that you only have issues in your house.
If you are out of contract they will try and get you to take another deal and then they'll throw in the Signal box. I'm too tight to pay the £50 for me to use my internet connection for mobile traffic, so thought I'd cancel and come back. However,I didn't realise how easy it now is to get a PAC number which is now automated. As soon as I requested a PAC they called my to try and sign me up for another 24 months but the deals were the same as the three site. So now I'm in the process of porting my number elsewhere for a month before coming back as a full contract customer on a cash back deal. It's a bit of a pain but the other networks are also rubbish near me and as far as I know three are the only network to dish out these boxes for free.

I just got mine yesterday after first calling them about getting one on the 12th of June - so nearly 2 months to the day.
Initially they claimed to be working on my local cell (coincidence, or stalling tactic - you decide) and that they would call me back in a month. Then they wanted another week. Then they were out of stock etc.
Anyway, once you have been deemed worthy to receive the equipment, it turns up the next day. Plugged mine in last night - the initial (automated) setup took a minute or two, but once the device had sorted itself out it works really well. I've gone from no signal at all in the house to a maxed out signal everywhere. Suddenly I can receive and make calls and I don't have to walk down the road to receive SMS.
Vodafone have them, O2 are about to have them and Orange use UMA which routes the calls and texts through your own wifi router. It has to be a compatible phone though.

I have hboot 1.28 now, and it seems to be worse than with 0.95, radio version is 5.1204.162.29, my operator is Vodafone Italy and my friend with the same phone same operator and same rom has the same problem!
Are we alone in this world with this problem?
Can it be radio version problem? (solvable with just flashing a new radio)
Maybe it's your network? No signal issues for me on Vodafone UK on any of the radios. Try your sim in another phone if you have one, or try another sim in your phone to cancel out phone issues.
i will try,
same problem here
Thought I'm the only one had this problem... It happens to me too often. when I pull out of my pocket there wont be any signal. Then I will switch to flight mode and will come back to get the signal. 4 to 5 times a day :crying:
Now ordered a new sim card. lets see whether this is a sim problem or its One X
I used to get low signal as well. This is what I did to fix my problem,
Go to Settings->Mobile Network->Network mode (Select GSM only). Before this I used to get only 2 bars, now I get full 5 at almost all times!
Hope this helps....

Since day one my HOX was losing signal completely.1st day I had it lost the signal twice and since them from time to time did it again but usualy after turning it off and back on the problem was fixed. The last couple of days though (now I have for a bit longer than a month) has done it 5-7 times and turning off and on didnt fix the problem all the time....I was too thinking that this may be a sim problem but if you have the same problem then it cant be the sim but the phone.Today I pulled the sim off and reinserted it and it seems to be working fine.Of course there is no way of telling if the problem will reappear.I just hope it wont because there was a period of 15 days that didnt happen even once.Let me close this by saying that when it could not find signal funny enough when I did manual search for networks it did find my network but trying to connect said that sim is not compatible to that network!!!!
I hope the JB update (whenever we get it) will solve this problem too as if the problem persists I would have to send my phone to HTC service which is the last thing I want to do....... :crying:

I took the sim out and put back in but no change then suddenly after 4 or 5 times turning it on and off it found signal.
I will get a new sim to see if that could be the problem but I dont think it has anything to do.
However noway I will not open the phone my self and lose warranty.
If situation doesnt improve after the replacement of sim I ll send it to service right away and press them for a new one or at least a fast repair.

Hey folks,
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this. I typically know what I'm doing, but my old GNex is acting VERY strangely. I gave it to my finance to use since I now have a Nexus 4 for myself (selfish, right?).
The first week she used it, it was just fine. The last few days, though, the battery has been absolutely tanking. And I'm at a loss for words. I've tried re-calibration, factory restoring it with stock images, running stock / Franco kernels, nothing helps. And it's deep sleeping just fine! See the images below.
Am I looking at a possible battery failure? I want to rule out everything else before I spend money on replacing it. The phone isn't even that old though... it was already an RMA replacement, so the battery is barely 3-4 months old. It should not have failed yet, but that would be my luck.

We live in a great HSPA+ signal area (I had use 2g only checked the day I took these just to try it), so that's not it. And it's getting 90%+ time in deep sleep. I'm absolutely baffled!

If you tried with a stock rom with the minimum apps installed you have the answer. It's not kernel/rom/app related, the last thing you can do is try a new battery, as you have discarded everything else I think it could be the problem.
Best regards.

Has this been resolved? I am having the same exact issue... I have also tried everything and definitely need help. I even bought a new battery thinking it would help and i am having the same issue with the new battery.

ARGH. Nope! My new battery came in two days ago and it's having the same exact issue still. I'm at a loss for words at this point.
Yours is significantly better then mine at least. It's dead in under 20-30 minutes of screen on time in a perfect signal area.
Any advice?

Ahhhhhhh... This is horrible. My last resort is to unroot but i have the NTT DoCoMo version of the gnex and I'm afraid it'll lock back up. I'm thinking i might buy one of those huge extended batteries from eBay or just get the nexus 4. This is a bummer. At least we're not alone haha

Don't bother unrooting. I tried doing a full factory restore with no luck.

I really hope we can get to the bottom of this soon

I am having problems with my 6506 GPS locking. I have tried three factory resets, and after contacting Sony, two software restores.
Yet I continue to get "searching for GPS" when I try to navigate either in Google Maps or Navigon.
Location services are all on.
Would a new ATT sim work? Any other help appreciated.
Do you have Google apps location access turned on? Settings/Google Account/Location settings.

Yes
Download GPS test apk to check it or *#*#7378423#*#* do GPS location test
Me also - turning into a deal killer for me
I'm having a similar problem. Stock firmware (rooted, not unlocked) and GPS fixes are problematic. This morning in Chicago suburbs (i.e. no tall buildings or obstructions) the first fix took maybe 2 minutes. I then ended GPS Test, waited about a minute, started again. Time to first fix was 48 seconds, which is extremely long for a fix when that warm.
I've also been comparing to the Galaxy S2 (I777), and doing so WITHOUT a sim card meaning it's AGPS ability is very limited, and even so every single time it locks faster and had greater resulting accuracy.
The problem is consistent with the GPSTest program, also google maps (and the resulting accuracy shown). The signal level of each satellite when it does see them is almost entirely orange on the ZL, but generally yellow or green on the SG2 in the same area.
As a quick test I am standing in my office, it's got a corner view south east. I powered up the GS2 which had not been in use for 2 days, and it got a lock in 9 seconds according to GPSTest's time to first fix. No SIM card either.
Then I did the ZL in the exact same spot, and after about 4 minutes I gave up. Screen shots below; notice that 3 additional minutes have passed on the ZL and still no lock, and I started them at the same time.
I've also used the GPSTest to clear and update the AGPS data, it made no apparent difference.
So far, even with the camera's over processing, I love the phone. Everything else I've got straightened out, but this may become a deal killer, as I really do use the GPS.
Is it just me? (Well, and the OP?).

Edit PS: Just to head off one area -- I am familiar with the NTP pool issues, have tried Faster Fix, but the issue is not that -- the issue is inadequate satellite signal, it's just not receiving enough/well-enough.
is lack of response indicative that the OP and I may have hardware problems and this is not normal for this device?
I called Sony, they had me do a complete restore with PC Companion, which reloaded all the software as best I can tell; I did not root or anything after, and spent 10 minutes in a parking lot without a lock. Later in the morning I tried and got a lock in about a minute, which is still slow, so it still is flakey.
And despite three attempts at calibrating the compass, when using it (and not GPS) it's WAY off, part of the time about 30 degrees, then as you swing around through (real) sourth it jumps drastically.
It's going back today, will see whether they have another to try, but this is a deal killer for me if the GPS doesn't work. I'm hoping the relative silence is a sign that it's not a general problem (a la Captivate of years past) and so will probably try another handset if they have one.
No issues with the GPS or compass on mine (C6502). It takes about few secs (usually <5-10 secs) to lock the position. Screenshot below was taken while testing GPS indoors (locked on in 8 secs).
New Handset
Oh what a difference a new handset made.
Kudo's to Sony Store in Wisconsin (an hour north of Chicago). I called, they had one, drove up and they swapped me out. One of the reps also spent time with my old phone and never could get a lock.
The brand new handset locked in a measured 7 seconds from the system test menu, cold start. THAT's what it is supposed to be like. I just tried indoors at the hotel in an elevator (glass sided though) and about 10 seconds.
So definitely had a bad handset. Definitely a working one has acceptable performance!
Thank you -- being able to explore here kept me from assuming that the model was poor and just returning it. Happy camper again. to the OP JUST GET IT REPLACED!

Sent it back two days ago. New one should be here this weekend.
