I've noticed on my s3 when I hold the phone the db signal goes up by a lot and eventually 4g goes to edge. The db goes up as well on edge. In particular when holding it with my left hand and my palm is covering majoring of the bottom left of the phone. If I put the phone down the db starts decreasing and eventually it goes back to 4g. Is this normal for T-Mobile devices? This only seems to happen where you have low signal already like indoors. Dbm between 99-105.
You can test db signal in settings > about device > status > signal strength. Lower the db the better.
Here is a video of me just flipping the phone upside down to get 4g back. I even tried leaving it in either position for a while just to show you that it doesnt change till after I flip it over either directions. DBM will usually spike up between 10-20 dbm when I hold the phone the way I'm holding it and if you reach about 111-113 then it will switch over. 20 dbm seems a lot of signal to lose but I'm not sure if that range is normal for all gsm phones. Either way, it sucks that this is happening so I have to make sure I hold the phone with either my right hand or hold it by the top half only.

You're holding it wrong.
Edit: my phone does not have this issue. I had 73 dBm 17 asu the entire time, whether I held the phone (tried different ways of holding it as well) or not.
Throwing bricks since 2008.....and proud of it.
I have a thin case and it doesn't help much. Maybe a thicker one but I don't really wanna use one of those. I'm uploading a video about this issue in a bit.

That's why I asked if this was a normal. I was previously with sprint and my wimax never went down to 3g while holding the phone.

If this is normal for T-Mobile then it sucks for me then. I just switched to them a couple of days ago. Edge is really slow for me. Speedtest shows avg 14kbps dl speeds. For those that have migrated like me I think this is useful information.

Lol you know if I hold the phone just by the speaker the db won't change much. So I think I am holding it wrong. But you seem to have great signal which I wish I had.

Is this true for cdma as well? Never had my sprint wimax go to 3g just by holding it. The big deal for me is it goes to edge which is painstakingly slow. I signed up for 5gb plan so was hoping to utilize it.

The antenna runs down the left side, from top to bottom. I'd imagine covering it with your hand would effect signal to some extent. Any phone that has an antenna placed along the side or bottom you'll most likely notice this with,I think that's one of the reasons MOTO packed all their crap in the top and gave it a hump.
Sent from my Droid X until I get my SGS3
All phones suffer from this to some extent.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Deat...lphones-cases-do-not-help-much-either_id17155
Yes all phones do but the GS3 on tmibile suffers much then the rest I guess cause of there network structure ,having said that no problems with me ,bars go down but only if I hold the phone in a tight grip seems to have problems (which I don't hold it like that)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
So it looks like holding the phone with my right hand the db signal barely changes and if it does it not drastic as if I held it with the left hand. It also would stay on 4g. If I open the back I noticed there's a W1 and W2 on the bottom left (phone facing me) so this is the area where my palm rest when I hold it with my left hand. I have a thin .07mm case but it still doesnt help. For now I guess I can hold it with my right hand but that's really stupid that I have to hold it a certain way but I dont have a choice at this time. Maybe a thicker case might help. Any other suggestion?
I can't believe I'm resorting to this but its working for the most part. DB signal staying within 105-111 and not going to Edge.

I agree it is a bit silly but I was trying to create more barrier between my Palm and that particular area of the phone to reduce signal degradation while holding the phone with my left hand. Compared to holding it with my right where there is less contact in that area which increases my 4g signal acquisition.

When I wake mine up, half the time I'll go to browser /speed test/ xda and my signal bar will go completely empty and slowly begin to recover... speed test will have anywhere from 200-1400 ms ping time...or browser or any other internet application will not load for 5- 10 seconds....it's like the internet needs to slowly wake up all the time. What a weekend this has been, and week this is turning out to be. A very severe storm blew through my small town here in Marietta, OH Friday night knocking power out here and across the state. Power is back on now in most places, however I am still in the dark. A very large piece of my pine tree broke off and severed the power line from the drop on the pole to my house. American Electric Power will not restore service until I replace the box my electric meter is repaired and put back on the house. Fun. Do today I removed the tree in question so ny landlord can get to the box to repair it. So it seems things are looking up.. however I have lost all of my food inside of my refrigerator and don't have the means to replace it all. If this not appropriate to post here delete and I will harbor no bad feelings, but I've been asking for help locally with no response since power is back up in most places, business as usual here. But I'm unemployed and trying to take care of my mother who is on a very fixed income. Anything will help, thoughts, prayers, what ever you have to give, I will kindly accept. Thanks for listening, I just had to get it out. This has been removed, but this is the image I took ...

Sucks. Our electric flickered, but thankfully we didn't lose any power. I have quite a few limbs to put the chainsaw to but haven't had a chance. Hope your power gets back on. I've been reading some places may not be until July 7-8. Sucks in this heat.
One thing though - you are on a fixed income, unemployed yet are paying $30 per month for a data plan?

I'm sorry that you are in this situation, but I am going to be very direct with you.
If you cannot afford to buy food, then I assume you and your mother are not eating. If this is indeed the case then everything else is secondary for the moment, is it not?
Put your phone on Craigslist for $100. It will sell quickly and provide you with much needed cash to buy some food and survive.
Stop paying your VzW bill. It will be at least 30 days (most likely more) before you have to deal with this. An extra $60 (at least) in your pocket this month to go toward food. Plead with the electric utility to defer your payment for this month..they will likely work out something with you given your situation..more extra $$ this month to put toward food. Do you have cable or satellite TV? Don't pay the bill this month and put the $$ toward food.
Hope this helps.

Whoa gs3 to one s? Lol.
S2 IMO is the most stable T-Mobile ics supported phone.
-cell reception depends on your area+ modem
-rear camera is pretty good at 8 mp though it sucks in low light
-front camera is very good 2mp (.2+ mp over the s3) lol
-build quality is not as good as the HTC one s (plastic all around and a faux silver band around the housing- on the white s2) though it looks sexy
-again data depends on area, modem or even the rom (aosp based rom isn't as fast as tw roms) you need to experiment w certain modems in your area. I get 6-7mbps on a tw rom at my house, but I only get 1.5 mbps in aosp roms. Where as at my workplace I get 4-5 mbps regardless of what roms I'm running (latest ics modem)
Only issues certain devices have=
1. Screen issue, blobs and lines though this isn't severe on newer production units
2. Over heating
3. Mic issues on almost all ics roms
4. Lack of notification LED - but you can use BLN (back light notification)
But If you can find a galaxy nexus GSM unlocked I would go for the g nex anytime. Yes you may have slower data as it doesn't support 42+ hspa, or a 8mp camera sensor, but you will have almost the same screen size as the s3, notification LED and a better build quality.
Bln?

To be honest every phone isnt for every individual. I have the SI SII and my friend has the SIII We all get the same reception inside my house so maybe you should have checked the connection strength. Did you happen to check cell reception in the same areas? Also did you do speed test? some times older phones will try and hold onto the 4g (hspa+) signal when really you should be going down to get a faster speed. Anyway onto the SII i love this phone and have no problems with reception however i live in a strong Tmobile market (austin texas).
I lose radio completely. And my wife's lumia is perfect. Could it be a sim card issue

I think the reception on this phone sucks too. But then again, I changed carriers so it could be just bad reception and my house being in some kind of dead zone. We'll see next phone I guess.
The s3 you got must have been in a bad batch or something. The One S has been having signal issues and I think its due to these new micro Sims we are using. If you get an s2 make sure you get the tmo sum that's made in india(has better reception for some reason) I use an s2 myself and if you root it with the right rom(cyangen mod 9) and have the right kernel, you're phones as good, if not better, then anything tmo offers right now

have you tested the speed in another location? example if that test was done at home, do one at work/school and compare
if it is just as slow you can try flashing a different radio..
i have generally been getting about 3-10 mbps depending on where i am/time of test...faster speeds as it gets later (network traffic slows down quite a bit at night around 10pm-midnight)
Somethings not right there. Did you just activate the service? Sometimes it can take a couple days for everything to get squared away on T-Mobile's end.
Also, have you double checked your APN settings to make sure everything is in order?
I'd also try some reboots and airplane cycles to make sure its connecting. Although it looks like you've got full HSPA+ connectivity. It could also just be a fluke with the tower you're on or the speedtest server you're testing on.

I'm not bootloader unlocked or even rooted for that matter. When I do I will play around with radios. I even tried googling a way to force 3g instead of HSPA+ to make sure it wasn't the tower. No luck yet. I did a speed test at my home and it was the same. The speed test I posted was at work.

APNs seem right from what I can remember.
I think you either have a SIM problem, a tower problem, or data hasn't been activated properly on your account. I'd give it another full day (T-Mo can be slow to activate fully), and if its not working, call and tell them your phone's data speed is extremely slow. They can try to reset it on their end (or send new SIM) or check for a tower issue.
Did you get the 200MB plan and use it all up? Because they throttle you when you use it all up. Them look like throttled speeds to me.
Or maybe, they are throttling you by mistake...
Also, have you restarted your phone?
Power it off for a bit. Pull the battery... then start it back up. I've seen that fix MANY things, and it's easy.

So its been about three days and its still the same. I flashes a few different radio firmwares and I found one that will give me anywhere from .1 to .3Mbps down. I have opened a ticked with T-Mobile thinking it may be the tower(s) in my town. Haven't heard back yet but I want to keep this updated. If it doesn't work out I will probably end up going with an at&t mnvo

The same things is with my phone. Three days since activation and data speeds are 1x slow. It's time to play with radios
I've tried more radios than I can count. So I ordered an st att sim and got it activated today. There is a huuuge difference from .05 tmo to 3.5 att st so I guess even if coverage is good and they say its fine there are some places where the actual back haul of the network is seriously lacking. If it still doesn't work for you go ahead and try a different provider. Made a world of difference for me.

There are antennas in both the bottom and top corners, three total - LTE Tx, LTE Tx/Rx+EVDO, and 1x. You can check FCC schematics. They show a diagram with all the antenna locations.
Then why when holding the phone at the bottom the signal does in fact weaken. And if not using Wi-Fi it get hot after some tike of using 3G? Don't have lte where I am at yet.

I just tried doing this myself and the whole time it was between 72 and 78. No matter how I held it.

It depends on which antenna was in use. At least one of them is on the bottom, so if that's the antenna you were using at the time, then your hand would be blocking and weakening the signal.
Are you asking if the phone gets hotter using 3G than WiFi? I personally don't use my home WiFi with my S3, so I have no point of comparison. For my S3 to start getting warm just because of 3G, I have to use the data continuously for around a half hour (maybe 15 minutes, maybe an hour; it's an abnormally long amount of time to continuously use a data connection on a phone). However, I mostly use 4G, and I still don't have overheating issues.

3G makes mine the hottest (out of all the data types).
Aaron Swartz, Rest in Pixels.
SGS 3, no troubles on GSM & wifi. 3G makes it hot. On CDMA i have less troubles (difference only in 5 positions). Seems it depends on device.
According to this image I found on S4GRU.com, the PCS and 3G antennas are at the bottom of the phone. That's pretty common with phones now because it places the antennas farther from your brain, reducing the absorption levels.
If you cup your hands around the antenna of any phone you will reduce the signal. This is a bit different than the issues that the iPh*ne had which actually used the trim of the phone as antennas. In that case, just touching the case in the wrong place caused a signal drop.

Very true. And explains why the bottom gets hot with 3g usage.

yeah that image does. I thought o was the only one that would notice the phone heat up when on 3G

I tool my S3 in and the guy said mine got borderline destructive hot, and got mine replaced. Now on 3G it doesn't get hot. Kinda weird. But it would burn up with no network on and playing bike race. Mine, sitting doing absolutely nothing with 3G on, would burn up though.. that's why he replaced it, that and it froze every 3 minutes.

I too notice a slight warm up when using 3G. Its noticeable but doesn't get really hot. Definitely will keep a eye on it to make sure it doesn't get too hot
Is a lower or higher dbm better?
Higher is better. -80 dBm is better than -100dBm.

I'm glad I know why I burn my hands playing games,
Has anyone noticed how bad the Wifi is with G3? Note note 3 was much better.

Wifi on mine is perfect. I just did a speedtest to post a screenshot. I like my G3 however im a huge fan of samsung. I bought this phone cause my note 3 went for a ride in the washer. I was wearing baggy cargo shorts and forgot it was in the side pocket. Still sold it for 150 even though it wouldn't turn on. The Amazon buyer was aware of what happened. I have no complaints with my G3. Still getting the Note 4 though.

I'm getting a much stronger signal at home compared to my N5. Speed even at the edges of my coverage are noticeably faster. Biggest improvement is in the 5 ghz range.
That's not what I meant. I am more talking about how far I am away from the signal. I could get further away with the note 3 than with the g3 from my wifi router.

I got the same problem at work wifi sucks s5 was way better. At home I have no problems cause im closer to signal but in job cuts off and on and wifi calling logs off 4g lte works better than my s5 but wifi definately got a ranfe problem.I went to store check out other lg g3 make sure I dont have a defective unit but its the same I hope a new modem can fix this.
Any news on a new radio. Reception sucks on my g3
Modem will not fix this. Phone suffers from death grip. Nothing can be done.
AWESOME G3
Wow. I thought the radio was good on this phone. Much better than my nexus 5 was. Maybe you have a bum phone?
Edit:
Never mind, you've checked. Still, I guess I don't know what I'm missing then as this phone has been the best I've had so far.
My data speeds on Wi-Fi are just as good as my note 3.

I was at home the other night and did a speed test and it was about half as slow as my Nexus 5 usually was on WiFi. That may have been due to the number of devices connected at that time.
How is everyone's LTE speeds compared to past phones? I feel like this is a lot slower than my Nexus 5. I was getting ~25mbps at home with my Nexus 5, but was barely pushing ~6 last time I tested. Maybe I was having a bad day with T-Mobile.

For me, speed is about the same (full internet speed) as my N5 but the Wifi range is better, especially on the 5 GHZ band. Problem is the range sucks for 5 GHZ on any device so I usually leave it on 2.4. On LTE, I regularly get 30-40 Mbps.

My LTE has more availability on this phone than my S4. I usually have 10-15 down, I've seen 60+ in a few areas on this phone that I've never seen on the S4.
