Unlike laptop, tablet cannot run directly from external power source. If you disconnect the battery while charging, press the Power button, it cannot boot or run.

OTG USB HUB with charger

Hi,
In order to make my tab as a laptop replacement, I want to connect it to an external HD plus charging the tab at the same time.
I am looking at this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/7-1-Card-Card-Reader-USB-HUB-Combo-Connection-Kit-SAMSUNG-Galaxy-Tab-/180767619221?pt=US_Memory_Card_Readers_Adapters&hash=item2a1696f895
Now I guess I will separate my questions to make it easier to understand (in all cases, assume that there is external power plugged into the hub already):
1) with nothing plugged into the hub, will it power my tab?
2) with an external HD plugged in without another power source for the HD, will the HD work and will the hub still power my tab?
3) with an external HD plugged in with another power source for the HD (let's say Y cable where the second usb cord goes to a power source), will the HD work and will the hub still power my tab?
Thanks
Im also looking at something similar but not 100% sure about it. maybe this will be better for you?

Hi Bud,
I have the same exact Combo kit that you've shown based from the link, I just got it yesterday of which supposedly should have arrived last month but because of the shipping delays which caused my pre-ordered item to arrive like crazy late, lol. But anyways these are based from my own tests. I have a charger that is specifically used for PSP 3000, I tried it there since it's 5V. as based from the sellers instructions and seems to work, the hub lit up.
So to answer your questions, i will start with number:
1. "By with nothing plug into the hub - except for your tab" as you said above (of which i assume you already have plugged in the 5v charger), it will not power your tab because it does not support charging since as i have tested was built specifically as an OTG host attached to a hub. But your tab will not draw or loose power since the hub was already powered by an external power source (charger).
2. Your external HD will work if you attach the 5v external power source to power your hub, without an external power source, your HD will simply not work. and again the hub can't give power to your tab, as Ive mentioned above "no. 1".
3. the answer is already mentioned on no. 2, but of course you will need a Ycable for your HD to work, because even if you use a y cable and not use an external power source your tab will not be able to power up your HD.
Lastly, you can use the hub without a power source, but your tab will quite drain a bit faster, as i have tested, i attached the hub to my galaxy tab 8.9 and attached a flash disk and also attached a usb game-pad, amazingly both worked and i played ps1 games for like an hour and a couple of minutes. But noticed that my tab drained a bit faster. so i used my PSP charger to power up the hub and noticed a bit less discharge. anyways you can try and test it your self Correct me if i am wrong but it's what Ive found out during my test.

[Q] Cable for OTG + charge on the Tab 3 8.0?

According to this thread:
I figured I would kick off some of the development for the 8.0 version of the Galaxy Tab 8. I've included the kernel I created recently which has helped with several performance issues and allows for OTG with Charging on our Tab 3 8.0.

How would one go about making (or buying if available) a cable to actually do this? I've done a lot of searching and can only find OTG cables with a 3rd USB plug that powers the slave device, not provide power to the host.
I'm researching the possibility of putting a Tab 3 8.0 into my dashboard as a dedicated car computer, and need to find a way to combine charging it with OTG to run a steering wheel button controller from it simultaneously.

[Q] TabPro 10.1 - USB changing

Would someone with a TabPro 10.1 please answer the following charging questions?
How long does this tablet take to fully charge from 25% or less charge?
If you attach a micoUSB OTG cable to a powered USB hub will the tablet still charge while using a device (USB harddrive, SDCard reader ... etc) that is also attached to the powered USB hub?
Can a microUSB OTG Y Cable concurrently charge from the standard USB charger and run an OTG USB device (e.g. SD card reader)?
I'm asking as I currently use a Nexus 10 attached to a powered hub with a USB ethernet adapter attached. Unfortunitely the Nexus 10 does not utilize the charge provided by the powered USB hub and looses charge. In this set up the powered hub only helps to power the Ethernet adapter so overall the Nexus 10 does not discharge due to the Ethernet adapter. I am hoping the TabPro 10.1 has a better charging implementation than the Nexus 10.
FYI: The Nexus 10 will not charge from its pogo connector when the micoUSB port is being used for charging or with an OTG device. The charging notification falsely indicates the device is charging.
Thanks for anyones insights.
I would like to know this too. I've purchased and the Note 10.1 2014 and this is the only issue I have with it is the lack of support for charging and USB OTG use. If the Tab Pro 10.1 or even 8.4 can charge with OTG I may exchange the Note. Thanks!
I just tried an OTG Y cable, it wont charge. I also tried a trick that worked on my lenovo windows 8 tablet where you turn the tablet off, turn it on with charger in, rip out the charger and plug in the OTG cable before it fully boots and then connect the charger to the OTG cable which allowed OTG+Power, didn't work on the tab.
IIRC this is something that can only be changed by a kernel modification as I think the old 2012 Nexus 7 could do this with a custom kernel, but I could never find a working download.
EDIT: Tried on my Tab Pro 8.4 running latest CM nightly

[Q] External keyboard battery usage

Hello,
Recently I bought an "Y" OTG cable which has additional charger input. I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet, and unfortunately it doesn't charge through this cable. Anyway, asking teoretically, if I connect external keyboard through Y cable with charger plugged in, will this keyborad be charged from tablet or charger, or maybe charger is obsolete and keybord will drain battery anyway?

p5210 otg

so if my tab 3 10.1 picks up my usb keyboard otg is good to go right ?
i know the 7.0 won't and doesn't, but i also came across something odd
using a generic cable w/7.0 to transfer file from pc my tab [7.0] wouldn't register
as being connected or come up as malfunctioning but with the samsung cable no prob
the cable for the 10.1 is the same cable
so is the tab 7.0 an otg nogo or does it have more to do with the charger port ?
Tab 3 7.0 and Tab Tab 3 Lite have NO support for USB OTG. Because they ain't able to provide power to the external devices.
All you need is to build up your own USB OTG by tricking it to provide power to the external devices. That mean standard OTG won't work.
About Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1 no problem with them. The only thing I hated is they don't support xbox controller natively
