Galaxy Note 4 Erases space after deleting files automatically? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi:
I have deleted an important file in the internal storage of my Samsung Galaxy Note4 16GB. I try to recover the file but failed. Actually I found that Note4 will earse the space automatically after deleting the file. I found that when I deleted the file, I can see the space is all 0x00 if I run dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p27 of=/storage/extSdCard/p27.img (of course I have root ) and checkout p27.img by winhex.
So, I wonder, if there is any mechanism on Note4 to earse free space autoly?
Thanks!

[Q] Free space after flashing new rom

Hello everyone,
I've been trying several different roms and I found my free space dropped to 1.7 gb on the internal memory. Is there any way to make sure I get the original free space back? Like formatting the partition and flashing a Rom or something like that? I've tried wiping caches and such, but I still think I've lost like 3gb out of nowhere. Although I would like to know what the average free storage space is first.
Please help a total noob!
Thanx
I assume you haven't deleted the old roms off your phone?
If you plug it in via usb you can view the storage that way (in mac [android file transfer]/linux/win). Just delete any roms you're not using etc.
It seems that you need to erase your storage to get it back. When flashing rom we didn't do storage format, files and folder from old rom remain there. This folder could be your content like music and pictures, also some remaining app folder
If you use a Linux computer to delete files on your sdcard then check your sdcard for a .Trash directory (the name might be different, like .Trash-1000). Even though you thought you deleted some files they just got moved to .Trash and are still there taking up space. If you delete the .Trash directory it will really get rid of those files and give you more space.

It might have something to do with the mmcblk0p12 code. Try using 15 or 16 at the end of the code to let your computer find the right user memory block because different phones have different placement of code.
The apps mentioned in the previous couple of posts are all 'paid for apps' and don't mention being able to recover files from the phones internal memory. They only seem to be capable of working on drives can be mounted such as the MicroSD cards in the mentioned devices. Jelly bean phones connect via MTP so pretty sure they won't work on the internal memory of the likes of the S3 or S4.
The only tried and tested method (for the internal memory) seems to be the one in the OP.
Thanks OP for the video, makes it easier to follow Wartickler's instructions.
It works
I followed the guide and it actually worked out. Thank you very much! :good:

I notice that there are many free tools can be used to recovering deleted pictures and files, such as PhotoRec, TestDisk and Recuva. They are 100% free that works for such use.
Here is a tutorial which tells the details how to undelete photo files.

I don't think that will work on Android with MTP. Maybe back when UMS was still supported one of those tools may have helped, but as far as I know (I may very well be wrong) standard PC based recovery tools will not work.

I have seen many programs for pc and apps for Android that claim to recover pictures from a factory reset. Do any of them work? Or is this the only way? How long of a process is this starting from beginning unrooted?

[HOW TO] Recover deleted files from Internal Memory

Recovery Procedure below after my short story
===========================================
Hi Guys,
Just wanted to share my experience in recovering folder from internal memory of Hercules SGH-T989D.
I backed up WhatsApp folder to my computer however, it did not copy and I did not bother checking [my mistake]. I kept flashing nightly and formatted it 5 to 6 times.
Once I was done flashing the new ROM I noticed that WhatsApp folder was empty and wanted to recover it. I tried Undelete app but that did not return anything I tried DiskDigger returned pictures which I didn't need as Google Photo+ already backed it up for me. ( You guys should set up auto backup as well very good feature )
So I searched online and found ASoftTech Android Internal Memory Recovery post which was awesome. However, it lacked couple of things which made it difficult for me. It was mostly missing how to configure ADB.
I have listed the procedure which I followed and recovered my files I needed. I hope it helps someone else.

I am providing link to PDF to dropbox. I could not attach it as it was exceeding the attachment size limit. Hopefully someone can make a mirror to this file.
How to recover files from formatted internal memory on android 4.4+
Reserved.

samsung galaxy pro 10.1 2014 version P600 - files on internal memory not accessible

tablet was running stock 5.1.1 rooted.
it did not allow SD card writes.
modified file permissions.xml on system/permissions/ with line
group id="media r/w"
syntax was correct
rebooted device and now files on internal memory and external (on card) no longer visible. random errors in apps (such as you tube, google play, so on) that they stopped working.
used ODIN to restore stock image, tried 5.1.1 and also 4.4, still not working
how can I restore permissions or edit the permissions.xml file?
Thanks,

Internal storage - no files, but not empty.

Hello. I have a problem with M9 internal storage - something takes about 3.5 gigs, but this "something" is not visible. I did factory reset, formatted internal storage from TWRP - still the same. Another phone (M9 too) after reset has internal storage almost empty, as it should be. So, is there a way to full format and run file sysmem check for internal storage? Via ADB maybe?
Check the data folder. Thats where all the crap is held. You can explore the system with es file explorer. Check the sizes of folders. Check /data/data.
Beamed in by telepathy.
The es file explorer is bloated with ads and unnecessary (and in case of the cleaner function even harmful) extra tools. There are alternatives like solid explorer.
If the phone got set S-OFF recently then it's completely normal that it lacks those 3 GB. There's a tutorial here on xda that explains how you can recover that space. I'll add a link to this post as soon as I find the guide.
