Hello, I have just received my Zenfone 2 today. I bought it from a Chinese website. It comes with 32GB ROM and 4GB RAM. It has all the Google Services installed even when you try to reset it they are still installed. Everything is working fine, except when I try to disable an application the phone reboots after I click "OK" and the application doesn't actually disable, that's the issue I'm having at the moment. But for the question, I was wondering how could I update my phone? Is there anyway to update it automaticly or do I have to upgrade it using USB Cable. If so, wich version (CN or WW) that I should install when Updating? Because when I asked the website they said it is CN and when I got to About device and go to build number it says WW.
I think they have flashed it to WW firmware to get the Google Apps. I'm not really sure! But wich updates should I install thought? And I also don't get the "Check for update" button.
Anyone? Please help

I think you can just download the latest WW stock manually (as once you are with WW, the device expects it), rename to MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip on the root of your MicroSD card and then reboot to recovery to allow it to get picked up.
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply. Well the device says that it is CN when I go to recovery mode, even the packaging that came with it such as the manual is in chinese. Even the website says it is chinese version. But for some reason it has the Google apps installed just like the WW even if you factory reset it. Wich one should I pick then? CN or WW to update my phone. And for the build number there's WW not CN

Seems, depending on how they did it, they may have flashed the WW recovery as well. If not, you can still do that (step 3).

From there, turn the phone off, and wait a minute.
Then, hold down the vol-up button, and press the power button holding that too.
When the phone starts to vibrate, can let go of power, but keep holdin onto vol-dn until you get to Fastboot (first screen past the splashscreen).
Press Volume-Down twice, and press the power button again. As long as the downlaod is renamed and on the root of the MicroSD, recovery will now open, and start to process the update.

followed a tutorial (Cnncted's youtube clip - How to root the ASUS ZenFone 2 ) to root
Accidentally (very stupid) pressed the update option when an OTA update showed up yesterday (Jul 8 2015), and after that the phone won't start properly - stopped at in search of incredible...
No luck with trying to boot into recovery mode (power + volume up). It just vibrates once and the screen is black. Trying to flash recovery image with ADB and flashtool etc, but the MTP usb connection failed. If I connect it to the PC using the USB cable and then press the power button to turn it on (stuck in that ..."incredible" screen), device manager shows the Z200AD name with a yellow exclamation mark beside, and Asus ZenUI software will automatically start. But it's not really recognized by the PC.
So...if you have any suggestions for me to try, please let me know and that would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. This is a US version, so the it's the WW sku?
Same problem here. I have a rooted 551ML and on July 6th I received an OTA update. I installed it and I'm stuck in boot loop. I have hundreds of family pictures in the internal memory.
The good news is that I have access to boot loader and recovery.
I could not find any custom recovery for Zenfone 2. They are not out yet, right? Is there any way to copy the internal memory of the phone (that doesnt load the OS) to the SD card? Or to paste a file img.boot taken from a downloaded official rom and copy it over the corrupted one on the phone's memory?
If you can access the bootloader, you can do this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-to-apply-ota-bootloop-rooted-zf2-t3127835
Btw, there is a custom recovery out there (TWRP, check the Development section), but you will need an unlocked bootloader to use it in your state (I think).
US version is the WW SKU btw. Hope this helps.

Joel, thanks a lot! I will give it a try.
fingers and toes crossed...
I faced this problem too. All I did was to flash the boot.img of my version using fastboot,
Then I flashed the firmware, without factory reset I started the phone.
I was continiously getting an error "com.android.process has stopped". Ignoring that, I just backed up my whole data. Did a factory reset. Updated
Boom!! Everything was normal... I hope this helps
Just a quick update - followed the method in the link that Joel referred to, and everything worked beautifully. I did get two error messages like “the contact stopped working..." “The process android.process.acore has stopped working.” I fixed this problem by clearing the data/cache from the "contact" app, and that did the trick without a factory reset etc.
I unrooted the device using SuperSU. The fastboot screen, however, still shows a random serial number 0123456789ABCDEF. Is there a way to revert it back to the real one? I do see the real one from settings - about - status.

Isn't everyone serial number the same? mine is.
This is something that I am not sure of. Yours has been rooted as well?
I would like to know what the fastboot screen looks like before rooting.

Pretty sure rooting didn't affect my fastboot screen at all.
actually i rooted my zenfone 2 and there was an OTA and i tried to install it without un-rooting my phone. the phone would not turn on and it gets stuck in the boot animation.
the phone wasn't detected by the ADB in my pc so i thought of installing some custom recovery, thought that could help.
i tried installing TWRP but i did not unlock the bootloader and now i am not able to enter in recovery mode either, everytime i try to get in the recovery modethe phone restarts and goes to fastboot mode.
please help.

I was having a similar issue where adb wouldn't recognize my phone but fastboot was detecting it. What I ended up doing was grabbing the latest stock firmware zip from asus, transferring it to my external sd card via adapter and renamed it to MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip. Then go into fastboot (restart with volume up key) and proceed to recovery. It should automatically update your system from there. The only bummer is having to re-configure everything.

Hi
I bought Zenfone 2 - Z00AD (4GB ram, 32GB rom, 1,8Mhz), it works fine but I can't find software update option. Simply it is not where it supposed to be.
I would really like to update it because i heard that battery is better after update. Can somebody give me some advice?

hi
i have same problem , anybody can help us?
I hope that someone knows how to help us.
Where from you buy?
I bought ZF2 at GearBest.com. And you?
i bought my ZF2 at TinyDeal.Com
Howdy lads.
I have bought my exact same model from dealsprime and I also had the same issue due to the fact that it's the Chinese model with a flashed WW firmware :/ When I went into the recovery mode it actually said that my firmware was the CN 2.13 version but under the software model details it showed WW 2.15 version. So you can't actually update it OTA because of this sadly.
I was able to safely update to the latest update with ease though, it isn't difficult and I will point you into the right direction.
I am unable to copy and paste the link here due to the fact that I have under 10 posts so type this into google and it should be the first link: "how-to-update-ota-without-bootloop-on-rooted-zenfone2"
This carefully explains what you need before updating and even gives links to each file/programs that are required.
I was very unsure weather to take the risk doing it this way but I decided to go for it.. and it worked every time I wanted to update my phone ^^
BUT! Don't bother with update files. only download the FULL firmware which is over 1gb and just flash it. It will not wipe any of your files or data so no need to worry about that:good:
Also I only needed to follow the first 8 sections so you won't need to do the 9th,10th or 11th sections.
It is always recommended to wipe cache partition after flashing also ^^
This is the only method that has worked for me with this phone model after trying at least 6 other methods which all fail.
Give it a shot and don't be scared! But just read carefully and do as he says ^^
Irish_PXzyan thank you!!! I did it step by step and it worked!
Thanks again.
How can I wipe cache partition?
Can I make OTA update after that, now I see UPDATE option?
The steps to wipe cache at http://www.asus.com/zentalk/foru ... hlight=wipe%2Bcache is a little outdated.
The updated steps of wiping the cache is listed as below:
Switch Off the Phone.
Press and hold "Power + Volume Up", release only power key after your phone vibrates and keep volume key pressed till you see ASUS Logo.
System shows the mode at the top as “Normal mode”.
Change the mode to recovery mode with the help ofvolume keys, select recovery mode with power key,
System will restart and you will see android logowith error message,
Press and hold “Volume Down + Power” key and while keeping those two pressed, press and release Volume Up key. System will now enter into recovery mode.
Select wipe cache partition (volume up/down tomove; power button to select), Process will start and will take approx.8-10 minutes.
After completion select reboot system now.
Your welcome ^^
Now enjoy the updates!!
You will have to do this every time you want a new update so you will never be able OTA sadly, at least from my experience I have yet to find a way to do this.
Hey guys,
Do you know how to downgrade the firmware from 2.20.40.97 to 2.19.40.22? I'm just going to try out game performance on the previous firmware. I've read somewhere that the lag on 3D games began on 2.20.xx.xx.
I was thinking of doing the same procedure of how to convert CN to WW using the older WW instead of CN, but I'm not sure if that's the right way. I might end up bricking my phone if I proceed without consultation.
I'm using 4/64gb ZE551ML

If you are downgrading the firmware with the same *SKU*, then simply ADB sideload the firmware via the recovery mode. Done it once, no problem surfaced.
Converting your phones SKU though requires some additional flashing of the recovery, droidboot, and boot images from fastboot. A simple Google search should give you a very well-detailed page containing loads of information for each step. Good Luck!

Oh no! I just remembered something! To flash to a firmware version lower than your current one, you would have to flash the downgraded recovery.img first, or else it would not succeed due to security checks.
To do so, download the appropriate recovery.img (link below -choose the one pertaining to the firmware version you want to downgrade to, e.g. if you are downgrading to version XXX, download the XXX version recovery), and place it into your ADB folder. Then, simply boot your phone into fastboot mode (Power Button + Volume Up Button - the screen just before you enter the recovery mode), and type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" into the command prompt (without quotes)
Download: (add h t t p : / / w w w. here)mediafire.com/folder/setyy42t2cymy#dy87k1a0f8m81
Then, power off your phone, and reboot back to the recovery mode. No issues should pop up upon attempting to ADB sideload the firmware anymore.
If the command prompt says *error:device not found* upon entering the command, please install the drivers at (add h t t p s : / / here)software.intel.com/en-us/android/articles/intel-usb-driver-for-android-devices

Thanks! I'll be testing it out. The link for the recovery is working fine. Didn't try out the one for the intel drivers though, I already have them. I'll go ahead and flash and see what comes up.
By the way, how do you guys get the recovery.img files? When I check the insides of the firmware zip, I only see the recover folder.
Worked like a dream! Went through the process flawlessly! Thanks a lot! Time to test out some games.
Please let us know the results, I'm quite disappointed with the current gaming performance as well, half of the reason why I bought this phone was for the good reviews that it had @ gaming. Curious if the firmware is the culprit or not.

Right now, I think the culprit may be Asus' firmware. Not sure though. I've tested Eternity Warriors 4 on both my ZE551ML and a Selfie, both with the latest update. I was expecting the Selfie to have better performance when I thought that the lag could be some x86 issue. But to my surprise, both performed exactly the same. Laggy. Even my colleague's Xperia T2 (I think) and a Note 2 performed better. I haven't tested much though. Interface response feels faster, not sure if it's just me or if it's really faster. I'm unable to test out other firmware due to my awesome internet connection. But a tip on where to start would help. I started on 2.19.40.22 since I read somewhere that the lag started on 2.20 series.
I was able to test Contract Killer: Sniper, sadly, pretty much the same performance. Will test other games.

Reverted back to the latest 2.20.40.97 since I pretty much have the same performance. There was a slight improvement on gameplay on the older firmware, but basically still the same. Games I've tested is Contract Killer: Sniper and Sniper X. Eternity Warriors 4 won't start for some reason.
I'm not able to test out all firmware due to my internet connection. 1gb would take the whole day to download on my end. :/

i have rooted my zenfone 2(z00ad), will this method work for me cause i have rooted my phone, unlocked the bootloader and flashed twrp ?? and if not plzzz help me....
Hi, in early September I started checking the OTA update notification to MM in my recently purchased ZENFONE 2 551ML (4/64GB): NOTHING - then I tried to do it manually, I downloaded the file from the ASUS website (V4.21.40.134) and follow the instructions, once I copied the zip file in the internal memory I found the notification and: did the update started? No, the phone rebooted and after a few seconds I saw a broken green robot with the word ERROR, ok, back to Lollipop, I double checked and saw a note "Before attempting the manual update, please make sure you are updated to V2.20.40.194 or later via the System Update app." while I still have WW 2.20.40.184 - ok, so I downloaded this update (that I should have received OTA having it being released in July - but I didn't), nay no, I had to download the WW 2.20.40.196 release (as the 194 wasn't available), I tryed to do the update but I got the very same error and the same broken green robot after rebooting - and lucky again it wasn't started anything so I could go back to dear old LOLLIPOP.
Note, the phone is not ROOTED I was waiting the MM upgrade to do so.
CAN SOMEONE HELP? (I COME FROM 5 YEARS OF SAMSUNG AND HUAWEI UPDATING / ROOTING / MODDING WITHOUT ANY KIND OF PROBLEMS)

According to the ASus site, you need to be at least ver 184 to upgrade to MM. So according to the asus site you are good to go for MM.
I did upgrade to MM from 194 though. Here is the link for 194.
Since you are saying that you did not find 194, you might be looking in the wrong directory.
Here is the link for the MM update. I am sure you have the correct firmware.
Dead robot with red triangle and error message sometime happened when you were trying to go to recovery or the phone trying to go to the recovery. To go to the recovery from the dead robot.
You need to press and hold the power button, and quickly press and release the volume-up button. The phone should go to the recovery if you still have the stock recovery. Sometime you need to click that volume-up button several times while you holding the power button to go into the recovery mode.
Since you are familiar with samsung and Huawei, you could use adb reboot recovery to go the recovery mode. However, if you see the dead robot and error you have to go through the above method.
Once you were in the recovery, you can use adb sideload to install the MM firmware.

Just download the zip from Asus.com then rename to mofd_sdupdate.zip, put it in the root directory of internal storage, reboot your phone to recovery then it will do everything automatically. Use this method to update to lastest 5.0, then MM. No need to type adb commands
I bought my phone from a chinese seller, its the 1.8ghz 4GB Ram and 16gb internal memory version.
It already had the WW version of LL, I followed a guide in the asus forums and reflashed the recovery and the rom from ww (just to be sure it was not in the chinese rom)
Afterwards I did adb sideload to MM. So far so good.
But if I go to the recovery there are several issues, first off when I boot to the recovery it appears the "Error!" screen, I searched and if I power button and volume up quick, I get to the recovery. And before choosing to enter the recovery, fastboot mode??, there are some status messages and they show the product name, variant, etc. Some of them show unknown, BL_Version, HW_Version, Signing, Secure_boot
Is there any fix for this? Is it safe to unlock the bootloader like this? I think I might have a diferent bootloader, ie MM FW with LL BL.
Thanks

buddy you don't have any issue with your device. and the error screen while entering recovering mode is usual. if you don't like that flash twrp. you will overcome that issue. also fasboot screen showing versions as unknown is also not an issue.

Well I unlocked the bootloader, installed twrp and rooted using the new Toolkit available here and it still says BOOTLOADER STATUS: UNKNOWN in the toolkit window.
Also, now when I boot it theres an error screen saying that cant verifiy some signature, right before asus logo, is it because of the Unlock of the bootloader?
