WORK IN PROGRESS!! FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
Hey guys,
Decided to try my hand at porting tonight using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908008
I HIIIGHLY recommend it if your thinking about, or looking to start porting.
For a while I wanted to port something that was unique to our forums. Since we have some amazing AOKP builds thanks to Haze028: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4153704, and some nice AOSP and stock JB from Houstonn: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=4852479, I decided I wanted to see if I could bring something unique to the forum. I was thinking something like Paranoid, or maybe RootBox, but then I found CarbonRom. So I present to you my first, and I do mean FIRST!!! (and hopefully not last) successful attempt and almost kind of doing some sort of dev work.... maybe, lol.
Anyway its been booted and running smooth so far. Its actually surprisingly smooth, I think maybe even smoother than aokp or aosp. But it could be just me being excited I didn't brick my phone, haha.

Not Working / Issues:
*Doesnt seem to be rooted properly. It comes with SuperSU installed, but I was having trouble updating the binaries. So I installed superuser and root checker, but root checker says im not properly rooted. And I cant get busybox to install.
*CPU shows it wont go lower then 1026 in performance menu, but it does go all the way down to 384. If you try to adjust it, the performance menu will freeze up on you. I think there is something wrong with the permissions. Part of the port instructions were to swap perm files, but the nexus and OG are so similar, I think I can get away with leaving them as is. That will be V2, lol.
*No NFC, not that anyone was expecting it to work (I hope). It kept fc'n on me when I first booted it so I had to take out the nfc apk's.
Anything else, please let me know.*
I haven't tested this with my sim card yet, so im not too sure about calling and texting. But wifi and bluetooth work, so I anticipate that they will work. I used chadouming's CM10 as a base (thank him here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1986924), so most things are pretty solid. Im going to have to look into what the issue with root might be. Again this is a work in progress, so it can only get better from here.
And please bare in mind that this really is my first go at something like this, so be kind, lol. If anyone smarter that me, and I know your out there, wants to take what ive made and run with it to make it better, and maybe start another thread with a more stable build, go crazy.
Its hosted on my dropbox, so depending on how quick you guys click, if at all, the link may go down quick. If anyone who gets a download is able to post or host a mirror Id appreciate it.

Looks great. I noticed in one of the images the onscreen navigation buttons. On your build do the capacitive keys light up and the on screen buttons no longer visible?
Thanks. Look forward to flashing this.

Nope. I followed the guide found in the op. And used your cm10 as a base.
ROM also suffers from sod's if your connected to WiFi and you leave the network while two phone is asleep. If you turn off WiFi first you will be fine. Same bug as in houstonns aokp build he posted in Haze's thread.

ATRIXX I think Im going to give your rom a shot. I'm currently on houstonns 4.1.2 JB rom on my E973 and I was wondering if I need to downgrade via .kdz to E97310F in order to install your rom? Or can I just follow install instructions from the state that I'm at now? Also what Gapps package do your recommend?
Cheers
Re: UPDATE!! [ROM][PORT] ---------> CarbonRom V2: A Nexus 4 port!
Ya your going to have to downgrade and re-root. I'm not 100% what firmware version you need to downgrade too. In my case I have an e971, and I had to downgrade from "E" to "D" firmware in order to flash anything aosp. If the e973's "F" firmware is equivalent to the e971's "D" firmware, than that's what you need to be on when you root.
As far as gapps, I'm just using the latest ones from goo. I believe 20130301.

If your on telus, your gonna want to go to E. If your on bell, f is the one.
flashed it this morning and it has been stable (no reboots) for the past few hours with working phone/sms/camera/gps/mobile hotspot. I used houstonn's gapps package and the messaging app wouldn't open/work so I tried it with chadourning's version and that fixed that issue. I might give houstonn's new aokp build a try sometime today as well but this rom looks promising :good:
[Edit] experienced sod issues when receiving text.
Mirrors for everybody!
I have A LOT of bandwidth to spare, OP I highly recommend you add this to your original post before your Dropbox maxes out.
HOUSTON'S KERNEL:

ROM AS OF 3/13/2013 - 6:58pm :
http://dev.vedpetkar.com/lgog/rom/RootedCarbonRom.zip
Alright, this mod is dedicated to mariog, who helped me to not give up on this idea.
Now, on to the MOD...
This mod is a ROM that gives the NST an experience that is as-close-as-possible to legitimate Android. This mod will be flashed using the CWM for NST. There's one problem, I had a release ready, but when I tested it, well that's another story. The point is, I deleted alpha-1 in a fit of rage over it not working, so, I need more devs to help me build this, because A.) I can't dedicate my every waking hour to this. (I'm in school most of the time) B.) Because my first attempt failed even though I looked it over like a Trillion times. ( Just to clarify: it booted, but everything crashed. Literally everything) Obviously I'm doing something wrong. I've built unofficial ROMs before.
In the future, I hope to branch this mod out to other black and white Readers, But at this point, I'm just worried about the NST.
THE MOD WILL INCLUDE:
-The best homescreen possible for the NST (Was using stock 2.1 Eclair launcher, not sure what is best. Launcher 7 looks good)
-Barnes & Noble stock reading apps
-B&N OOBE. (Modified?)
-Android Market/Gapps
-Dropbox included in install
-No bloatware (ie: phone.apk etc)
-Best NST internet browser (opera mini) installed as default browser)
-"Chef's freezer" app (look it up)
-Probably more.
-I will also include a minimalistic version. (No: dropbox, browser, freezer, Gapps other than Gmail)
All I need is devs willing to devote just a little bit of their time to this project.
Note: ROM based on android 2.1, I will try to do 2.3 once CM7 support is made for the NST.
Note2: All you readers will be lucky if I get any sort of release anytime soon. Don't rush me. If you want to get this fast, then you can help me! I need beta-testers and devs anyways. No unofficial releases will be made to non beta-testers. If you want them, become a beta-tester!

Vanilla RootBox 5-15-2013
Disclaimer! I'm not reliable for any problems arising with your device from the use of this ROM.
Please continue at your own risk, and as always, make a NANDROID.
- Removed some bloat in /system/app/. Left 3 launchers for choice, and stability. (Crashing
cLock.apk)
- Removed mpdecision from /system/bin/ for slightly better battery. (Allows overclocking, and
underclocking without being bothered by locked CPU multipliers, etc.)
- Forced GPU to render graphics and UI by modifying a line in /lib/egl, and renaming a file to
.bak (Improvement to battery life)
- All "videos" in media/video have been deleted to save space.
- Alarm_Rooster2.ogg was kept as an alarm, tweeters.ogg was kept as a notification,
FriendlyGhost.ogg was kept as a ringtone. All others have been removed.
- All foriegn tts/langpico files have been removed. Sorry, I only understand English and basic
Spanish, so I'm only supporting English for the ROM.
- Added my own personal customized list of build.prop tweaks tried over different devices, and
ROMs, to push more performance and battery life out of your device.
- Added Supremacy v3 script with permission of it's creator, be sure to stop by and say thanks!
- Added AC!D Audio Mod v7 for AOSP with the help of Team AC!D, permission given from R-ikfoot! Be
sure to stop by his thread and thank him!
- Added Sony Bravia Engine 3 for sharper and crispier images, and videos.

Nice work overall, but still a little bit unstable. Been getting RR every so often. Running the stock kernel. I will flash another kernel and see if it stabilizes. Came from a full wipe.
Edit: Too unstable. Flashed BMS and I am still getting RR. Let me know when you update.

Thanks. I'm thinking of seeing if there's a 3.069 ROM for Rootbox since 3.4.y isn't in its prime yet. I couldn't find a release (but there's tons of them and no change log so I'm gonna have to download them all and check em out myself)
Meanwhile I'm running LiquidSmooth v2.1 with the same setup here and its nice and stable. With permission from Mike and his Team, I'll see if I can bring that here as well.

Support
We spend an astonishing amount of time developing this software. We can't spend much time on XDA as a result, so if you need support, please try the following:
1) Search. Search, search, search. Yes, you. I don't care how unique or important your question is, it's very likely someone has adressed it already. Especially if you're even close to new at this.
2) Read our FAQ, which can be found on our website. Carbon FAQ
3) Ask a question in your device forum. Someone will no doubt try to help you. Warning: this help may come in the form of telling you it's a dumb question that has been asked before. See step 1 - such are the perils of asking questions when you haven't done the research yourself. Android is about helping yourself.
4) Ask a question on our IRC channel. Connect to #teamcarbon on irc.freenode.net or click here. You'll find several other Carbon fans and usually one or more devs as well. Please be polite.

You were hinting at this the other day in the other Carbon thread, looks like things are about to get very interesting around here. In more ways than one too.

Yeah I'm testing this now, Carbon is an awesome ROM no matter what version I've tried previously. The community here will embrace this undoubtedly. Can't wait to see the progression to stable but looks like the ROM has some pretty neat features already including active display.
I plan on using this with no scripts or tweaks for the time being either, see how it does.

Well we read it here first! Also the new boot animation is great, and boot time is phenomenal. Boot only takes seconds and I have not had that with ONE single ROM yet. Boots have normally been about a minute or so with other ROMs.
I'm going to try some things I haven't tried in a bit like ART although previously my experience with it hasn't been good. But again, a lot of time has passed since the last time I tried it.
Edit: Well never mind, ART couldn't get past the first 10 apps. That is pretty much what I thought would happen so no big deal. It's almost at the point ART might as well be removed altogether from KK ROMs but that is only my take, so in other words that isn't happening.

Art works. Try doing it without gaaps. Some gaaps don't have art support and that's why it gets stuck.

Well I am using PA mini Gapps from 1/23, aren't those releases all ART compatible by now? Or is it better to run ART and then install them?

About Carbon
CarbonRom is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. We are dedicated to fast, stable, and feature-filled roms, honesty and communication with our users, and openness with our code. We like frequent builds, with the very latest and greatest hardware support and fixes. We strive to not only provide you with the best rom we can build, but also to give back to the Android community and our fellow developers. For us, this is about creating something we can be proud of and hope you will enjoy.
Please feel free to look at, build, and use our code on CarbonDev GitHub. and on our Gerrit CarbonDev Gerrit.
We would like to thank CyanogenMod for their device trees, framework/settings mods and their code that was incorporated into this project. We also extend our gratitude to the devs whose code that we have incorporated. Proper authorship has been maintained and can be viewed on our repository.
Special thanks also go to Slim Rom for some of their features, PA, AOKP, and anyone else we may have borrowed commits from that hasn't been mentioned here. If you feel you have been unfairly left out, please - let us know.
While we make every effort to test these builds as much as possible, we are not responsible for anything that may happen to your device, family, pets, or perception of reality. We ask that you do your part to know your device and know how to recover from problems before you flash! If you have questions, ask your fellow users or ask us in #teamcarbon on freenode IRC.

Remember, every penny you send to us goes right back into the rom. It's used for hardware, server costs, etc - all the things that help us make Carbon better with every release. Your support means the world to us! If you've enjoyed Carbon, please consider a donation toward this goal. Thank you, and we hope you continue to enjoy Carbon!

Already loving Kit Kat! Thanks Carbon!
Man, this ROM is SOLID! It's great to be back home. I hope Carbon gets to relive its glory days, as it did in 4.3. Great job team!

Can someone provide a direct link to rom download. Left sidebar device tree doesn't show up in phone or laptop browsers and even when I Google found my way to toroplus download page there's nothing linked after select a release type. Thanks

Can anyone let me know how data is please. A lot of devs have perfected the icons showing but data is sketchy. I like the features that are listed here and I would love to make this my everyday driver. I have been a CM fan for ever but I don't like the change in policy. Build and send out then hope for the best. This ROM seems like the one to replace CM. Thank you.

data for me has been nothing short of a miracle! It has been switching seamlessly between 3G and LTE with no issues what-so-ever. I used to hate having to always reboot the phone just to get LTE in an area I know has LTE. I am also on the newest radio the GJ04 and have been for quite some time.

The only issue I have so far (and its not a deal breaker by any means) is screen rotation...when the screen rotates, it sort of gets fuzzy, like a bad picture, but then quickly fixes itself. Running Carbon KitKat on my SGS4 as well and it does not do that, so I'm thinking its something with the Toroplus??
dirty flashed the most recent nightly and running well. digging the pie controls. any way that the Carbon Updates in about phone could work to update to the latest nightly as there are no KK milestones?
Very impressed with this Rom !
downloaded and flashed yesterday, very nice and stable. I like that the dialer has the Google local business search function built-in, I remember earlier cm builds didn't have it...
Haven't noticed any hiccups yet!:good:
Anyone flash a custom kernel with this Rom? any kernel suggestions?
Alternative Kernel
flashed the tinykernel-5.5-ASRAM.zip yesterday and everything seems to be running smooth after a day of use. This kernel is giving me 733mb of RAM to work with, so you gain around 30mb over the included rom kernel. I've tested WIFI, GPS, camera, etc., everything seems to function as it should. I've also underclocked to 230MHz and kept the max set at 1200, although you can go over 1500MHz if your phone can handle it...mine usually freezes instantly around 1500. Currently I'm still on build from 2-13, but will be updating soon.
This Rom seems to be very stable and one of the best KitKat Roms I've tried ! I've also reduced animations setting, along w/ other available related settings down to .25 within developer options. Under this set up my phone is pretty snappy!
Data switching (3g/4g, Wifi) has been flawless so far!
Although the tiny kernel I mention above works on this Rom, I was experiencing pretty often freeze ups requiring battery pulls, so running the included kernel since updating the rom and haven't had to battery pull yet... so for now will stick w/ the included cyanogenmod kernel.
Overall Great Rom !
