The selection of ROMs available is a bit overwhelming. Which one should I be using?
Stock? (Rooted ofcourse)
SuperZen?
Prism?
CM12.1?
Slim?
Omni?
Carbon?
Euphoria?
Paranoid?
And don't say flash them and see for yourself. I don't HAVE TIME to flash all of them, nor am I remotely interested in tinkering with the settings on each and every ROM. I just want to get the best value out of my phone. Aesthetics aside, do they have any notable key differences between them such as stability, performance, battery life, memory usage, or are they all relatively equivalent in that department?
I feel this thread will get flammed.

Why? Are less experienced members not allowed to inquire the more experienced members here?
Using PA, and I never had a 2.3 GB free on my RAM since I bought this phone!

I tried CM12.1, but there were annoying bugs for me, the phone got warm and battery life was bad.
I went to SuperZen and everything is pretty much like Stock, not much difference other than not having to disable and hide as many apps.
I really wish this phone had better battery life.

Yes they are, but best Rom, best kernel threads are frowned upon. All the developers here give their work for free and all strive to provide the best possible software. So in this case comparison equals criticism. You really need to decide what you want and make your decision based on your own reading of the respective threads.

Exactly!
Also, the best rom for one person may not be the best for someone else. Everyone uses their device differently, so there's really no other way to know what will work the best other than trying out a few.
Also, you may want to have a look at the sticky threads. (sorry mods, I'll get out of the back seat now)....

i see windows user here. Tell me, why do you buy a 4gb of ram phone if your system uses only 2gb? Android has good ram managment and i love to see 200 mb free ram, then i know it's worth. It's like buying a ferrari car for 20 kmph on country roads.
You didn't understand it, haha, Imagine this, when I'm in the stock ROM, my free RAM is always less than 1GB, then here you are saying it only consume half.

You should try SlimLP, there aren't any bugs so far, and you get this for your SOT(if you use it efficiently)
Sent from my ASUS_Z008 using XDA Free mobile app
At this state, most ROMS are almost identical. Only a couple have the actual ROM's features. Our PA doesn't have hover/peek (yet). I think only Slim Rom and Team EOS have their features activated. But most (CM based) ROMS have the same bugs.

I don't see the harm in criticism, so long as it's constructive. If I was developing a product, and my work wasn't up to par with what the people wanted, I feel it would be a disservice to myself and to others to blatantly shun / ignore criticism that could possibly help me develop a superior product.
Are people here really that thin skinned?

That may be the case, however, if you read my OP, I clearly state that I am looking for user feedback on KEY differences between the ROMs which affect EVERY single ZenFone2 user (if any exist at all?). Ntrasme just stated that they are all basically identical at this point. Can anyone else testify/confirm that?
Personally, I've tried a few of the CM12.1 derived ROMs myself and did not notice any major differences between them other than a few slight aesthetic changes, which makes me wonder if there is any legitimate reason as to why I should use one over the other

Literally every ROM will be useful to different people.
Install a ROM. Decide if you like it. OR YOU CAN ACTUALLY READ THROUGH EACH ROMS THREAD. Please do not clutter the forum with this type of post. It is completely unnecessary. The ROM that works well for me may not work for you. Features I may love, you may have no use for. Literally just spend a few hours or days reading reading reading and more reading up on all these ROMs, and install ones you think will work. You will not receive an answer you are looking for here.

To be honest you have to deside for yourself. No time to flash is not a reason at all. We are all busy and yet spend some time to flash and find our own perfect roms. Developers spend 10x more of that time to bring us FREE rom to flash. Ill give you an example. Says rom #1 is my best rom. i love it give me the best battery life i wanted but it lags here and there which for me its fine. But for a power user. Someone who play games or someone with lots of apps may find it annoying to have lag here and there. And might not care so much about battery therfor labeling the rom not his/her favorite. My setup is unrooted. Looked bootloader. I hate my sot but i have quick chargers at my work. Homr and car. So im good lol

Nah, I've looked through each and every one of those threads and clearly it didn't contain the information or answers I was looking for. For one, I've yet to see honest, unbiased and fair comparisons on the key differences between the ROMs. Just because you personally don't find a certain topic of discussion useful doesn't make it clutter. With that said, if you feel my thread clutters the forum, maybe you should stop contributing to the "clutter".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Snf0UOVik0M
What specific questions about CM do you have? Post that in the CM Q/A thread
What specific questions about SlimLP do you have? Post that in the SlimLP Q/A thread
honest, unbiased comparison? So if JoeSchmoe XDA user just says "Oh, I'm unbiased", does that mean you'd believe them? Don't look for a comparision guide; Instead, look at threads and/or websites of EACH rom you are considering, and they will tell you every nook and cranny of that rom. Then, you can make an informed decision about which rom to try FIRST. Don't like it? Pick another.
You are not the first, nor the last, to post this exact thread here for the Zenfone 2, even though the phone is barely a few months old.
If you cannot take the time to gain knowledge on the process and the differences of the roms yourself, you should not be attempting to flash a custom firmware.
We are all here for the love of development and technology.
I suggest that if you want a perfect rom, that is the best of all worlds, that you take up programming and show us all how superior you are. :good:

Not true. Alot of the ROMs are still in testing, and even the devs dont even know every nook and cranny on wtf is going on. Reason I started this thread is to figure out core differences. Usually there is a de facto consensus on what is the best ROM to use on a device, but with ZF2 apparently that's not the case as each ROM is basically equivalent / derived from one another.

b) a life.
c) would rather spend that time trying to get laid instead of nerding it out.

I would like to hear this too, but the moderators have decided that these kind of discussions are forbidden here on XDAdev. They believe that because it's subjective it's somehow pointless to discuss. I don't agree, I believe that you can see what people share your preferences and base your ROM selection upon their experiences.
I'm presently running Swtos 1.0 full and I do like it. I've experienced no bugs, my only gripe is that the help files are removed (yes, I sometimes want them) and that I'd like more speed and responsiveness - but then again, are we ever satisfied in that department? Looking to Swiftblades 7.0 16pp and Swtos 1.4 full for upgrade.
Good luck in keeping the thread open.
swiftblade
(explaination below - suits my needs / min apps and is one, speedwise is one of the quicker ones in tf3d)
but as above... good luck keeping it from being closed... everyone has different needs... and depending on apps they install (which can affect the overall speed of each rom) you'll have no concensus and 2183491749183471 different responses of why its the best
I like it chocolatflavoured.

I think a thread like this is great. Egos shouldn't be aloud to stand in the way of opinion. It's OBVIOUS that speed etc is subjective, but just like when you buy a car magazine, it's still nice to hear other people's opinions - it gives you a base from which to build your own experience.
I am using Swift's v7.0 16mb full ROM and it's great - very stable and very fast, what more could anyone want from a ROM? I tend to steer clear from the ROMs/chefs surrounded in hype and shameless self-promotion as I believe a good ROM speaks for itself.
I think there are all about the same for 99%.
I did like the french ringtone aztor put in it
disagree- a question like this is subjective and irationale.
There is no such thing as "best" - no values- no perception - no speed (as this is ONLY in the eye of the beholder)
The ONLY reason people post this Question (as I did when I started 700 posts ago with my XDA) is not to have to read hundreds of pages of pro's and con's for each ROM.
My 2 cents

I don't think the original poster was asking about 'best', at least that's the way I understood his post. We all read through endless posts about various ROMs and it's inevitable that we wonder - 'I would love to know how x ROM fares against Y rom'. What's so bad about allowing people to post their subjective experiences so that a common denominator through comparison is formed, allowing people to assess which ROM may be best suited to them? If people have flashed and tested many ROMs, why can't we benefit from their experiences? We aren't children, we can discern for ourselves which post to believe/disregard!
It's like Orwell's 1984 around here sometimes

Subjective - yes, but so is everything we percieve. Subjective doesn't imply irrational. What I think IS irrational is actually having to read through hundreds of pages of ROM threads to find info you need.
Forums like these are also about collecting and organizing information. I argue it would be RATIONAL to collect experiences in a single thread, instead of having bits and pieces scattered all over the forum.
I HAVE read through pretty much all the ROM threads, and I enjoy making up my own mind from the information there.
Still, I lack the direct comparisons most people here are so afraid to make. Most people only say sth like: "the rom is very fast". Compared to what? Compared to another cooked ROM or to a stock ROM?
My 2 cents.
I want to get pushed to use it.
The more ego, the better. I need a rom from someone that 'dares' and keeps creating roms everyone knows, and wants everyone to try it. I tend to pay for quality too. I don't believe in making something 'for free', its good for the creator only then. With, all respect offcourse, exeptions are always present.

Wow... Unless something is lost in translation, it sounds like you really aren't interested in what XDA-Developers is all about. While there are numerous knowledgeable folks here who will happily help others and answer questions, it's not a place to drop in and have people serve up just what you want to know on demand. If the answer to your question were truly a "cut and dried" affair, then you'd likely see some information in the Wiki listing "the best ROM / kernel combination for battery life", and all of the conversations and ROM / kernel experiments and tweaks relating to that topic would be moot. But that's simply not the case. "Best" will differ across users and configurations, depending on usage patterns, installed apps, strength of 3G / 4G / Wi-Fi signals throughout the user's day, etc. Whether or not you, personally, care about the feature sets that custom ROMs offer, most of the folks here do, in fact, care -- and that's why many of us are here. That's why the developers put in countless hours researching, developing, testing and tweaking their ROMs, kernels and utilities.
Finding "the best" will be a different search for each user, based on unique circumstances and interests. That's why it's so great that there are, in fact, so many choices here. But making the best use of the site requires that you be willing to read the discussions, do some searching, and then perhaps ask questions in various discussion threads that will help you find out what you hope to learn. If you're not willing to do that, and if you dismiss 90% of the development effort here as being pointless, I'd suggest that you probably won't find what you're looking for here.
Battery life is what it is on the Galaxy Nexus. I havent really seen THAT big of a difference with all the ROM/Kernel combos I have tried. Its the phone itself. If you have that big of a problem with it, I suggest getting an extended battery or a new phone.
You're right. You should take your questions to those forums. If you think any policies are going to change just because you complain about them you are clearly not the type of member XDA is intended for.

Nobody tells you that you must try every ROM.
What's the difference of all the ROMs for Nexus:
- Another "ROM developer"
- Different features
- Different look
- Different experience
- Etc..
If you like to complain about the things then put even your thread to Q&A section!! -_-
I am using my modified STOCK Android ROM and battery life is great so stop complaining and use Android phone with stock Android OS or go to use iPhone with the same firmware which almost everyone iPhone user uses..
And also Battery life doesn't just depend of "Kernel", also many other things affects to battery life.
that was a difficult read. so i didn't
My suggestion go with a ROM that is pretty much stock AOSP, and not AOKP in your case. Stick with a ROM like KALO's that is just basically the AOSP Stock ROM with almost no mods, if you worried about battery life.
I mean we could tell you but we'd have to kill you and that's against the XDA rules.

First of all "castom" isn't even a word. It's CUSTOM. Second, it's not really a good idea for noobs to take it upon themselves to blast people like you just did. This is a DEVELOPMENT forum. Just because YOU think a ROM is useless doesn't make it so. And seriously, if a MOD thinks a thread needs to be closed, it's closed. Period. Again, just because YOU think it shouldn't be doesn't make it so. Finally, don't expect to be spoon fed here. It's not tolerated well, and "Tell me the best ROM" threads generally aren't either if I remember correctly. The best way to learn is to read read read. There is a wealth of info here. Most people figure out the best ROM for them by reading and testing.
Chill out and start educating yourself on what this forum is all about.

What seems to be the most favored ROM at the moment?
Also is the Camera and all it's features? Panaramic photos, beauty face etc. grouped with the stock rom would or have the other developers been able to implement the camera in their rom?
Wicked ROM.

Threads asking about "which is the best rom" are generally prohibited on XDA because there is no answer.
Only YOU can decide which is the best ROM for YOU. Features that make a rom great for me might be irrelevant to you. Even if we both value the same features it then depends on how you and I use them differently. And finally it just cones down to taste.
You have to try different ones out and decide for yourself.

Which is why I asked which seems to be the most favored. I wanted to get a feel what everyone else seems to be using without having to flash 3 different roms to find something decent.
The only reason I ask this as there seems to be a ton of roms out there.

Which is another way of asking "which is best". Agsin, these kinds of threads are not generally permitted on xda.
You need to try roms yourself to find out what is right for you.
Try a touchwiw rom then an aosp rom. See which overall platform you like more. That will cut down on the number left to decide from. Then read up on the available features in roms of the platform you like to narrow it down more.
No one can tell you what the best option is. But these threads do tend to accumulate on xda. There are already 2 of them today.

Not sure why you are getting on my case for asking this question, I don't have a bunch of time to sit down and flash rom after rom which is why this thread was created.
I wanted to see what a majority of people were using to get a feel from there.
Again so I don't have to flash a bunch of roms.
It's the same concept of reading a review over phones, I want to see what phones people were using so I don't have to go buy phone after phone to find something I like.
I'm not ASKING people to tell me what rom to get, again I asked to see what they were using so I could look up the rom they were using and go from there.

No one is getting on your case. Just explaining that these kinds of threads usually end up locked on xda and why "the most popular" rom isn't going to always be the best rom for you.
I told you how to narrow it down dramatically to a couple of roms to choose from so you don't have to sort through all 20 or so.
To answer you initial question though, the most popular rom on the s4 by a HUGE margin is the stock rom. Number 2 in overall popularity is the stock rom with root installed and bloat removed.
If you don't have time to test different roms, then my honest advice to you is to stick with either stock or stock with root because any use of custom roms takes up a lot of time. All the little settings that make a custom rom different from a stock rom take hours and hours and hours of fiddling with to find the perfect set up for your use. And if you ignore those settings options you may as well just stick with stock anyway. Then there are the inherent glitches that come with any custom rom, usually minor, but still requiring attention. And then the regular updates to fix those glitches or to add new features and improvements. Its all very time consuming. So if you don't have the time to test custom roms, you probably won't have the time to maintain one either. This is absolute honesty about this hobby for you.

Just FYI, asking about which Roms you should go with will be a quick road to nowhere. Just head to the development sections, read the chagelogs for what you may want, download, flash and test.

I did that and tried most of them ... before with my old S4
So that's why I'm posting here, to see what more experience ppl might thing that a more reliable rom would be (or setup)
thanks
That is kinda different for everyone though and how they use thier device
Also how you need to try different roms for yourself.
what is good for me might not be good for you.
If you have MK2 on it already might be the only concern.
If you are only try 4.3 or higer roms from my understanding.
And you will have knox on the phone then and no way to get rid of it.

Threads asking which roms are the best are not allowed.
Reasking which roms are the best after it's been explained that you shouldn't ask that isn't allowed.
Then asking for answers to questions that have been answered so many hundreds of times in so much unblievable depth that ANY search at all would produce multiple pages of results explaining everything is frowned upon.
Please please please search before posting in the future, especially before starting new threads.
Experience with ROM's does not matter at all in relation to which rom is the best. Only YOU can decide what rom is best for YOU. No one else can help with that process. The most experiences guy in the world might want a really simpel ROM. The biggest novice might want 8 bagillion settings to play with. Or vice versa. This is why such threads are not permitted on XDA.
I promise you that if you search first, and read multiple posts about a subject rather than ask for the answers to be spoonfed to you, that you will learn about this stuff VERY FAST. You will no longer be a novice and will be the one answering someone else's questions in pretty quick time. It's the ONLY way to learn this stuff. It cannot be learned by having the answered handed to you. It's reading posts and seeing how different variations of things have different outcomes that will quickly make you pretty good at this stuff.
It takes more time, but the payoff is much greater. You don't just end up with a mod you want. You end up understanding the mod you want.

I did some reading before posting, and I could not get my answers after almost 1 hour of surfing over a few pages in different sections. Consider also that I did root and installed custom roms for the last years on at least 10 different phone models. So I'm sure some people here might even have a harder time, understanding some things.
I will respect the forum rules and I apologies for any inconvenience.
Though, it sounds like a very communist rule not to be able to express, what you find as the best rom for you, and why you find it as the best rom, or fit for you.
Wicked v9 just came out. I'd flash that:

Its because it often degrades into a battle between one 14 year old who likes X ROM and another 13 year old who loves Y ROM who start fighting about it.
And if such threads aren't contained early, then half the threads on the forum list become ROM comparison threads and nothing of substance ever gets talked about. (Because such discussion will unfortunately never be contained to a single thread.)
And none if it has any relevance to anything. No matter what reasons Joe has for loving his rom, John might hate it for those same reasons. And you might think they are both nuts because a 3rd ROM is the best one ever.
Again, the ONLY way to see what ROM is best for you is to try different ones. It's the only possible way to make this determination.
And it takes a lot more than an hour of reading. Phone modding is not a quickie change. It's an insanely time consuming hobby that will isolate you from friends and family because you'll start to think dinner and a night out and Christmas and stuff like that can wait because you HAVE to flash the latest update to X ROM RIGHT NOW!!!!! Be careful getting into this...it consumes you pretty quick.

I am on wicked v8 and I do notice it's quite nice much less force closes and system (phone) restarts than I am used to after flashing a rom. Smooth and fast. I am just reporting my experience, I like many roms but this one does seem quite smooth and nice and has a cool installer. But ultimately the choice is yours. I can say most any ROM that's on here and available for download should be working very nicely to be released to the public, and should not have a lot if any errors. They don't let junk rom's release here with loads of errors and bugs.
So they all should work good its really a matter of seeing the features you like best and choosing from that. If you really want to compare roms read the comments made by people who use them in that rom's section and see which rom has the most people saying they love it lol
I'm trying to move on from gingerbread? what is better?stability?performance?battery life? I know gaming performance of gingerbread is superior to these two. And what rom would be great? + kernel?
XDA doesn't allow the discussion of "best" ROMs and Kernels e.t.c.
It might not be one but is a correlated thing to it.
You just try some yourself
It all comes to personal preference.

I mean cm9 vs cm10 xD which is more stabler here.
