Phone Suck on "Android is upgrading" message - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a long time ago I flashed my HTC one with the ViperOneM8 version 4.3.0 but recently a new version of that has came out, version 4.5.1. After successfully flashing the new update I was waiting on my phone to update and be ready to use when I realised that my phone has been stuck on the "android is upgrading" message for a very long time. The message come after the "Optimizing apps *number* out of *number*" message. Iv tried to turn the phone off by holding the power button for over 1 minute but nothing happened and now I'm puzzled. I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me. PS I don't have any way to get a picture of the message.
*UPDATE* I let the phone run out of battery and booted back into recovery and flashed the ROM again with no problems but just before I get access to the phone I get the same problem.

May need to update your firmware.
Do fastboot getvar all, and post the output (be sure to delete IMEI and serial number before posting, as these are private info).

[Q] Question about RUU

Hi All,
I have a VZW Htc One M8, and I have been playing with it when have gotten the chance recently. I have installed/flashed an RUU before to correct an issue I ran into (trying to take an OTA) and everything went smoothly. As I said I took the OTA, but kept the RUU from the previous time I used it (first mistake). I am s off so I am hoping that is going to save me here.... This brings me to my problem.
I was trying to flash Viper Rom, but at the end of the setup I kept getting a popup saying setup has stopped, and I was unable to see a homescreen, but the phone was working. I decided to revert back to stock using the old RUU (be gentle) and it loaded and I hit yes to begin. About 10 second in it stopped and wanted me to reboot... I was in the middle of doing something else when it happened so I rebooted back to the bootloader and my OS line was in red. I then went back to recovery and restored my very recently created backup of my stock rom, which worked. I then went back to the boot loader to look at what was in red more closely and it is now blank. It says OS but then nothing after.
I have since gotten the new RUU that I should have used, but it seem to hang on the last part of the loading (put in on my external sd card) and my phone works... but the boot take forever and the VZW logo doesn't come up anymore. It almost seem like the phone boots fine but the HTC ONE logo stays until the phone screen turns off and when I hit the power button to turn the screen back on the phone is booted. My question is... should I 1) try the old RUU again and then take the ota since I am s off I have seen that technically it should work. 2) let the phone sit at the loading of the newer RUU and see what happens (I haven't tried seeing if the old RUU will load yet) or 3) count my blessings and deal with a non completely broken phone?
I realize I made a few errors while doing this, but I am hoping that s off will allow me to correct the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Issue should be resolved
Sorry to everyone that read this... I didn't make it all the way through the thread where I found the new RUU, and the thread tells how to resolve the problem with not loading all the way. I am going to try the fix after work.
Edit 1: problem resolved... I am an idiot

[Q] (Nearly?) Bricked M8 - Help

Hello there good folks of XDA,
I'm at work right now and my phone is at home but here is the story of what went down last night.
I tried to root my phone, after installing TWRP and superuser I ran a root-check app and it said that I was not rooted, so not thinking I tried the 'fix permissions' function of TWRP and then everything went haywire.
It's an international version M8 that I've had rooted before but reverted back to stock to get the lollipop OTA updateBy haywire I mean the phone booted up but no widgets displayed and most of the apps still appeared in the app drawer but nothing would open.
Instead of seeking help at this point I went to town on trying various things :silly:
The last of which was try and flash a boot image to it, but I think I must've used the wrong one as after doing that it's now stuck in a boot into TWRP loop.
From when I had previously rooted the phone I had a boot image (I think) 2.22.401, it matched version on the recovery file I used when reverting to stock in the past so I thought it would be fine
I've still got a terminal open at home with all the results of the fastboot getvar all command but from memory my CID was HTC_044
Can someone help outline the process and possibly even the files I need to reflash my phone into a working order. (it doesn't need to be 'stock' but that would be best)
I use a mac by default but I do have a windows machine at the ready I can use so feel free to base any tips on doing it from either platform
Post the getvar all output, minus IMEI and serial number, and we'll go from there
Thanks for coming to my assistance but in the end (after a few more slight failures) I managed solve the problems myself.
I believe that my first problem was using a not up-to-date version of TWRP (2.7) with Lollipop; the first symptom was my attempt at rooting my phone, the process appeared to go well but just wasn't working properly.
My second problem was 'fixing permissions'; after doing that my phone went totally haywire and while it would boot into android nothing would work properly
After going to a previously used stock recovery and getting nowhere I went back to the same TWRP I started this with and still had fixed nothing.
at this point I did a factory reset from the recovery mode and while that got me booting back into android I was being swamped with error messages and couldn't get past setup wizard crashing.
At this point I flashed the wrong boot image and had a nearly impossible time getting to the system boot menu instead of TWRP being what it always went to. Eventually I must've got the timing right with the buttons or something because I got back into the system boot menu and could access fastboot.
Once in fastboot I downloaded a full nandroid backup and restored it, my phone was working again... or so I thought, it was still suffering from permissions problems
at this point I re-rooted it with the latest TWRP, got SuperSU working properly, did the 'restorecon' command with a terminal app and now the app crashes I was getting have stopped and I can see and write to the phone memory.
After trying to test everything I could think of on my phone today I think it's finally fixed.
I tried to do a partial/selective app+data restore from a nandroid backup I took of my own phone just after the 'fix permissions' event but it didn't work properly so in the end I manually re-setup my phone. I do run an sms backup app so overall I only lost time...

rooted htc desire 816g octa-core won't start after updating OS

hello,
I have htc desire 816g dual sim octa core , last week its charging port burnt so i took it to repair shop to get it replaced
when it came back it was factory resetted , the phone had hundreds of photos nthat I didn't backed up , anyway I tried to recover the photos using many softwares wich asked for the phone to be rooted first , so eventually I did root it, and guess what? I could only get 5 photos back. anyway I mistakenly updated the OS and the update started normal and in the middle of the process it stopped and gave me the lying Andy and "error" word underneath I found later it is in the recovery mode... wiped cash ,factory reset and restart, nothing changed, installed a custom rom on sd and tried flashing, nothing too. installed android studio and tried to get to fastboot to unlock the phone .. I could get to fastboot but the command get oem identification token didnt give me a result wich suppose to be a number to get the phone unlocked via htcdev. now I'm stuck I spent the week trying to get it to work without any luck.
please help me, I emailed htc tech support but didnt get answer.
is there any repairing tool or something
any help would be strongly appreciated
for diagnosis purposes the phone now start stay on htc logo page for a minute and restart itself and go to the page that has the lying Andy and when i push the power button I see the recovery mood menue
Where did you buy the phone? Are you able to boot in hboot? Could you please post hboot data and getvar data?

M8 is unable to restart, no USB debug on, S-On, please help

I Have the following issue:
Some days ago my phone started to act weirdly, was getting error messages of all my apps that stopped working. After some searching on the internet I thought the best would be to do a factory reset using the boot menu.
I tried recovery first but this only gave the red triangle with a red exclamation mark. Booted back up but error messages kept spamming.
So then I tried to do a factory reset in the same menu, this started out well but when the loading was done the phone was stuck on the htc-logo screen. I had it there for some hours, but without any results.
I tried this process agqin, but no other result.
I tried some things listed on forums here and there but since I have not ever put the phone in developer mode I cannot get the PC to recognize my phone.
I read somewhere to flash with my SD-card but I did not found a full tutorial on that (considering I am a noob on all this).
The phone just turned 1y old and I really need one for work and other stuff so I am also wondering if there even is a way, if there is not you can give me the hard truth and I will order a new one. But would be stupid to not have tried all the options and found out later it could be fixed easily.
Anyway thanks in advance look forward to your replies
Pieter
have you unlocked your bootloader with HTCDEV and are you able to get in to fastboot?
if so you could flash TWRP and restore with a stock backup.
if not and you aren't able to get the device to be dectected by a computer, you may have to contact HTC for a repair.
I had the exact same problem as you and I tried a million different things but then this man saved my life and came to my rescue!

Go to my thread and do those steps as i did and get your phone back

"Can't find valid operating system. The device will not start."

My wife got this error today:
"Can't find valid operating system. The device will not start."
Then shows the visit g.co/ABH link.
We aren't even able to boot into recovery. When selecting recovery from fastboot mode it just goes right to the same "Can't find valid operating system..." screen.
I've seen a few posts of people having this issue, I haven't seen anyone state they recovered, but I wanted to make sure.
I figure since I can't even boot to recovery there is nothing to be done??
History:
This phone is < 3 months old. It has not been modified (no unlocked bootloader, root, or even USB debugging enabled AFAIK). It rebooted on her once in the middle of her just using it within the past 48 hours. Today she saw a notification saying the phone needed to reboot because of a system update. She did not reboot it yet, but was using it fine. When she went to use it this afternoon (after having been on it 15 minutes prior) it was booted to this error screen.
On a side note, Google refuses to send a new phone even though this one is < 3 months old and the problem appears to have been caused by their software updating and rebooting her phone without permission.
thanks

It is under warranty. Phones brick on updates more than any other time. I don't see where they really have a choice but to replace it.

Two questions. 1) Was it purchased from Google? If not, that may be why the issue with warranty replacement. 2) Is the phone a Google version (AKA unlockable bootloader)? If it is, you could always do a bootloader unlock which will also force a factory reset and if successful allow you to load a factory image. If not, there is nothing you can do without getting into recovery.
