The recent apps menu did look like it opened faster but everything else seemed very laggy and jittery. Maybe it's just the video, but my Note 4 is a lot smoother than that one.

The kernel seems to indicate that it's a rooted version and maybe it's debloated and that's why it's snappier..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
Mine isn't snappier. At all. Maybe on the kernel, but even that wouldn't explain the absolute zero lag on recent apps. My buddy's rooted Note 3 is nowhere near that. Even it has a "little" lag.

My Wife and I got a pair of Note 4's PRIOR to Lollipop. We both upgraded to 5.0.1
She is of the "I dont like messing with it" I have downloaded most every launcher, got involved in themes etc.
Other than disable the bloatware (fitness, milk, ant, etc.) I want to say her phone is so blazing fast I cannot even comprehend why it is so fast compared to mine. I have factory reset mine ( hers no) but that thing is what all phones should be like..
Q: On an Android system does it have something like a defrag like computers? Why would hers be faster than mine? Ideas?

I'm pretty sure the reason is becuase you have a lot more apps on your phone, starting with a different launcher.
I don't know why Android does this (or is it the app developers causing it?)...but a lot of apps load into memory whether you run them or not. Less memory available = slower performance. This is why I was disappointed when the Note 4 came with 3GB instead of 4GB of memory.
I have a lot of apps on my phone, and especially if multitasking it is quite laggy (for example, when I go for a walk, I'll be playing music through BT, and have MyTracks running to track the walk. If a text comes in, it has a very long lag before it opens).
This is the reason I'll likely be replacing my Note 4 with something else soon.
Well, I so have a TMobile N4 on the way. Plan to root, and install a KK ROM. Been researching on the TM Dev site, and there appears to be a great one there. Everybody touts the speed and battery performance.
That being said, the topic of 5.1.1 came up. One of the folks there had just got the T3 version of the N4 wiht 5.1.1, and he said as far as he is concerned, no ROM necessary. Says it flies. No comparison.
So, hopefully, 5.1.1 will be here on AT&T before long.
I switched back to stock launcher, removed a few weather widgets and a few less used apps and now mine flies.
I guess we have been lucky, we have never experienced any battery issues or any other things spoken of during this 5.0.1 update.
The only issue we have ever had is the issue with wifi vs 4G LTE. When you reach an area with wifi it sees the signal, wont connect due to not having the pw and the phone becomes useless unless wifi is turned off or you leave the area. Still waiting on speedify to come through with its beta.
D
I decided to try the stock launcher after reading your post. It is hard to believe how much faster it is. I miss the customization but love the extra performance. Hope I can figure out why the stock launcher keeps crashing once in a while.

After reading this, I thought I'd give it a try. Jeebus! Okay, so maybe the problem is more Nova Launcher than my actual Note. The downside is, I love Nova! I use the gestures and such constantly. And my phone stays in landscape position all day. Has anyone had success with other launchers?

It's weird how different these phones are. I've been using nova prime for about 2 months now. Went back and used stock Touchwiz launcher for a day or so and was thinking how jittery it was compared to nova. Went back to nova.

Yeah, after an hour of using TW, the recent apps lag was back. Switched back to Nova, no lag. For a few minutes. So much for that. Does anyone know exactly what the nature of the "memory leak" in 5.0.1 is? This must be related somehow.

Just curious, for both of you. I do not have my power saving mode turned on. There is a tab there that restricts cpu performance if its on.
JFYI...This past week I got a T-Mobile Note 4. Rooted it, installed a 5.1.1. ROM, and it is much faster. I too use Nova Launcher.
Battery is great too. I typically do an overnight / screen off test to get a general feeling of battery performance.
My AT&T Note 4 overnight with power saving off, wifi on, BT on, used just under 5% / hour. The TM one with same conditions lastnight used .73% / Hour. Yes...less than 1% / hour. I'm seeing quotes over in the ROM thread of 5-6 hours SOT.
I was ready to ditch the Note 4. Not now.

My phone had been running pretty great for 14 days now without incident (in the past I was getting reboots) but then a few days ago I started getting more and more frequent launcher restarts. I checked running apps and memory was at 120MB. I restarted and with the same exact apps/services running I had 322MB. So the question becomes where the hell did the 200MB go? Seems like a memory leak to me but have no clue what could have caused it. An update can't come soon enough for this otherwise fantastic phone.

just the way it is. I experience the same thing and i show around 130 mb of free ram all the time. I just let the phone do its thing though. I'll reboot once every 2 weeks or so. I dont think your free ram level is abnormal, i see it all the time. Yes a reboot increases it to 300 mb. But it shortly goes back down. I would ignore it.
I will notice that when i get down to around 100 mb free, i'll just go about my browsing or whatever and half hour later it corrected itself showing 190 mb free, all identical apps still running.
Its the mystery of linus. Ram is shared in ways that make it extremely difficult to tally free ram. Thats why i just ignore it. And yes i get launcher closes, along with overly aggressive task killing by the OS. I personally think its a bug google may fix.

Galaxy Nexus keeps apps in memory, it never has 'a lot of free memory' if it has been running for a while. It clears memory when an application needs it and that's it. There's no 'memory leak' of that sort in Android, but there might be something off with one of those applications that might end up hijacking so much memory.
As for launcher restarts, this has never happened to me and I'm thinking that some application, that you have running, causes this.

I don't care how much memory is free. I just can't stand the launcher restarts which are directly related to low memory because the system has to dump the launcher process from ram to make space for other processes. I've seen it on many phones. Apart from the launcher restarts the phone is fine.

Well without reboot most I've had my phone up is 6 days. My free memory was just over 300MB so I'd almost think it's some app you are running too because why am I not seeing any leak? Are you running Nova Prime or just the freebie?
We have had a similar thread before. OP in there was amazed that some of us had 300+mb free and he had 120. Turns out it android 4.0.1 was the culprit. Are you still stock or 4.0.1?

In the world of real operating systems, free memory is wasted memory. Why bother releasing memory if there's nothing to replace it with?
If you are low on memory it's a good thing in Android, because that means that many apps are pre loaded in the RAM so they can start quicker.

What are you using to see free memory? Its reported differently in different places. Go to settings Apps and Running. What does it say there? I have 300MB but it shows 100 or less in many apps. The number in the place I told you to look is how much memory is usable for user programs since it removes the kernel and running services. THIS number for me was 120MB which means all apps only had 120MB to run that weren't services. So what does yours say?

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
The memory is a red herring. If your launcher is restarting frequently there's something going on, but memory may not be a part of it. Perhaps it's a misplaced pointer reference or a widget that's causing the launcher to reload to resync or maybe it really is a memory problem. Either way, focusing on the memory probably won't get you any closer to the root of the issue but uninstalling suspect apps or widgets may.

What have you done/installed since you got your phone? My phone actually hasn't experienced any noticeable lag at all, not even once since opening the box. And I had three of them - all had zero lag. Of course, I still went and updated it and disabled some stock apps. It's getting better and better. The only issue is the speed at which this phone gets warm performing basic tasks like camera, email, internet. Even sometimes in my pocket with Sync turned off and Sound muted, the phone would get warm by itself. That's funny.

I installed action launcher, removed animations and thats about it. Right now I'm downloading the wicked rom to install, but I don't want to lose all of the samsung features such as, "smart scroll, s beam, multi-window, etc). Would you happen to know if the wicked v2 rom removes any of those?
im tired of the lag too.im on stock rooted with all the gimmics disable , my gf gs3 is alot faster. gallery takes about 2 sec just to open.
hopefully is fixed. had the htc one but battery life on it doesnt compare to gs4 .
If you don't want to be rooted to "kill the lag" go to recovery mode and factory reset and reboot. Do not touch or do anything with the phone for 5 minutes before setting up.
Im stock rooted, running Faux's kernel. I ALWAYS disable animations in Developer options....that alone eliminates much of the lag in any phone. Also, you can disable the S Voice connection to the home button.
Lastly if you want an incredibly ultra fast experience in scrolling and app drawer.... Install Nova...and make sure to make scroll speed "faster than light". You will then see how fast this phone can be when not slowed down by animations. The nice thing about Touchwiz, is that the settings and notification tray look fairly stock JB....so it matches great with Nova.
This S4 is FLYING....so friggin fast, zero lag, great battery life!
Try it out!
Cheers.
What are things you've noticed so far in the alpha/beta builds of Android 4.3?
As of 8/10,
- (Cosmetic) I like the addition to the LTE signal. On cm10.2, the 4G icon has been replaced by "LTE". (Does not apply to SlimRom.)
- Device appears to be much, much smoother and consistent.
- AOSP keyboard no longer opens a window to save a word to the dictionary. It just does it once you hit save. (This one is a big plus for me.)
- LTE, while speeds haven't necessarily matched my Touchwiz experience, I can safely state that LTE, even with slower speeds than Touchwiz is loading pictures/videos a lot faster. It's much more noticeable how LTE connectivity has improved when going to a 4.3 rom on this device.
- Required to enable root via developer settings prior to using any application that requires root access. (This is a security feature but for someone that flashes ROMs on nearly a daily basis, it can become a bit tedious since it's just an extra step.)
Find anything new? Share your findings here.

Is camera still buggy? what exactly is buggy about it? I havent tried an AOSP rom in like 6-8 months because first time I flased one my sd card got corrupt. I believe it is formatted correctly to where IT wont happen now and thinking about finally making the switch since touchwiz development has kind of slowed down recently and im starting to get bored. Main thing keeping me on touchwiz was the camera. I take a lot of pictures. Are there any other issues that would keep me from using an AOSP ROM as a daily driver? Bluetooth issues, random reboots, freezes ect...
I never had the luck of running a 4.3 build perfectly. Phone ended up crashing and getting stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S3 boot screen.
Latest carbon runs quite fine 8-29 nightly. However, I noticed Bluetooth doesn't appear in the toggles nor can you enable torch in the power widget. Anyone know a work around to fix this?
On AOSP 4.4 ROMs I get way worse benchmarks than I do on TW 4.4 ROMs. But no matter what I do, I always have choppy performance and insane lag on any ROM I try for this phone. I know it's relatively old but shouldn't it be a little more efficient than this? If anyone can think of anything I can do to make the performance better, I'm open for suggestions.
