Updating rooted phone - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have rooted 815 with 10b eur software and it seems like the new 10c update might help with the bluetooth issues. I tried to update before root but no update available in my country at that time. Now how could I update my phone to 10c the easiest way? I assume I would have to reset and reroot the phone in the process. Or can I just ota and reroot?

No need to do a fullwipe/factory reset.
You get the latest KDZ and flash it - if you do it right you should not loose any data.
But you will loose root for sure and you need to reroot.
As far as I read OTA won't work on rooted phones and unrooting seems not enough - you must either flash a KDZ or use LG Bridge for the Update.

OTA update bricked my phone. Need advice

Hi all,
mt LG Optimous Pro G E988 has been working fine for 6 months,
But over night there was a OTA update, and now my phone is "stuck"
I say stuck because it will boot with the message
"Secure Booting Error"
"Cause: Device Unlock!! So Boot Sucess!!!"
then it goes into my CWM Recovery....
I had rooted with cwm
Here is where I am having the problem. It never fully installed the OTA update, because I had a boot loader installed.
I had tried to wipe everything and do a factory update, but no use.
I also tried using LG Mobile Support Tool to reflash the factory ROM
as per: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45953380&postcount=1
Yesterday when I tried it, the LG f;lash tool said it was not able to connect to the LG Server
But today the program is saying there is not enough power and may cause a problem.
I have just charged the phone for 9 hrs straight. I don't believe that it's undercharged
Is there a way for me to flash the phone with the original ROM without connecting to LG's server (using their Support Tool)?
Please help.
Thanks
Since you already have CWM installed I hope you have a backup which you can restore. Backup your apps and settings using tools like super backup or titanium. Then reload the JB 4.1.2 kdz from pc. You can look for the steps on xda forums. Once that is done successfully you will loose root. Then try official update via OTA. Or you can try to update via pc tool. Someone already shared the kitkat kdz on xda forums. You can try that too. All the best.

Unfortunately I do not have the backup anymore.
I also tried updating via the LG Mobile Support Tool, which did not work as it gives an error about not being able to connect to the server
I tried the guide from Madmack "[GUIDE] [E980] Fix soft bricks. Flash back to stock using LGFLashTools"
But I have not been able to locate the TOT file for the international E988
I tried to use the one he provided and it did not work (yea I'm desperate to try anything now)
Anyone out there have a TOT file for the international E988?
Or is there a way to crate one from the KDZ files?
please help
thanks
Not sure why you need a tot file. Kdz is fine. Look in xda for guides on loading the kdz file. That is a sure way of unbricking your phone. If it is still bricking after kdz load go jnto stock recovery and clear all caches and reboot. Most guides i have used mention this as an optional step.

Same thing happened to me with the value update. You have no choice but to reflash stock with the lg flash tool. I flashed mine with the telcel flashware but got brave enough before the kitkat update to flash back to att with .tot file .You should be fine once you reflash stock

Here is the link to the tutorial ... http://www.cellrabta.pk/2013/10/how-to-flash-big-kdz-files-optimus-g-gk-g-pro-g2-and-others/.
Note that it is not my own but a tutorial that I used successfully for my phone multiple times.
And here is the link to the XDA forum discussion that has links for the KDZ downloads ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2438088
Hope this helps.

[Q] OTA update root??

I'm still using stock unrooted, but I'm wondering if I root my G Pad only without flashing a custom recovery and ROM, will I still be able to update via OTA like usual or I have to unroot first!
Thank you very much in advance!

In the past several people have reported problems when taking an OTA update with a rooted G-Pad. Rather than risk it, I have always done a completely clean update with a wipe of the device using the LG Tool Upgrade Recovery with my V500. Once that completes I re-root the device and continue on.

Even if you don't have a custom recovery installed? Because I saw that some people with root only updated their G Pads ota with no problems with only root removed afterwards! They may have lied however!
I think this ota update with root problem applies to most android phones, right?
Thanks for your help

In my case, I have root on stock recovery, and always do the updates via OTA, without any problems, and without losing root after that!

Excellent, it is good to hear that root without changing recovery could work when taking an OTA update. I was only quoting what I had read, not what I had personally experienced. If it were to fail I would assume you could always use the LG Tool and do an upgrade recovery to reimage the entire tablet.
I did the latest OTA update (while drunk) and it updated fine and I still had root when I woke in a panic the next day wondering if I had soft bricked it.

Rock on! Now that's Happy Flashing...
A few months ago my g pad was root and I successful updated it to kitkat via ota update. But recently it showed up another update on the tablet and when I tried update it, it failed giving an error. I think if u are running kitkat and are rooted then ota update won't work.

Thanks for your feedback guys! The G Pad community is awesome! I'm happy I bought this excellent tablet with awesome specs! Nothing can beat its value for money and great design!
I rooted with towelroot and hope I receive future updates! Never thought towelroot would make rooting so easy as with my previous phones, had to do some steps while connected to pc.

[Q] Root+OTA

The problem is that I want to root my LG G3 D855 32gb, is there any way i can root but still be able to OTA update it?(Sorry for my bad English)
Update: I found an app called Towelroot, some people said that they can still update after root, anyone who used it can tell me if that's real cause I don't want to brick my phone or something like that.THANKS
If you want to root, do it now. OTAs can break root or patch the vulnerability. Never take an OTA until it's been confirmed safe or rootable.

For most people, OTA doesn't work after rooting. But there are some who claimed that they can OTA after rooting, and root was even preserved after the OTA.
Ota Update to 10g save my purple drake root, not problems.

You can root and then unroot to be safe to take the OTA update. There are some guides on how to go back to stock around here. One could be using the LG PC Suite and the other one, flashing a .kdz file.

[Q]Unroot & Go back to stock help

I am trying to get my phone unrooted but a bit confused about the process. I am running h81010g rooted on my LG-H810 AT&T G4. I know there's a thread about using KDZ & TOT methods, but there isn't anything available for at&t phones. Any idea how to get back unrooted?
My reason for wanting the phone unrooted is cause of lack of any development for the att version, i would rather have later updates than wait around on an older firmware (not that att gets out updates in a timely fashion).
Use the same process you used to root with. The image you want to install is the UNrooted h81010g

Thanks,
I was trying to avoid using the PR firmware because it appears that there is no return to at&t software once this is done. I would prefer to return to at&t firmware unrooted if possible
Uninstall all root apps before flashing unrooted.img file or just flash then factory reset?

lg g4 vdf UK - unroot and restore question

Hi.
I just bought the g4 from vodafone uk. I have LP and would like to root it and install exposed without unblocking the bootloader. However I havent decided if I am keeping the phone and might return it in 2 weeks.
I havent found any kdz for vdf uk to restore to stock.
Is there any way to restore back to the factory state. In case i want to return or restore?
Thanks

Check and see if there's a rooted img someone has made for your variant and a kdz. If so I would flash the rooted rom and just flash the kdz If you decide to return it they'll never know it was rooted if you completely restock it. If there isn't a rooted img just ask if someone would pull you a copy, but as long as you have a kdz your good
