how about if i were to hose my note 8 and need to recover to complete stock. is there anything out yet for the US WIFI version? just wondering as i might wait untill i root, install recovery etc...
I am downloading the UK version as per the suggestions in a post on the first page to this thread. I was told it is the same.I hosed mine trying the multi boot option on one of the dev threads, Cant get to my recovery so I'm kinda screwed.

Now the only way you can hose your stock firmware is to mess up a flash, or purposefully delete system files in the root.
With that said, you can safely root with Saferoot.zip. It does not flash our change your counter. So a OTA or Kies update will work as if you never touched the device.
Now that you have rooted safely, you can install Xposed framework and it's modules... they will not hose your device as they are boot only system options.
I recommend Ti backup pro, and Solid Explorer but be careful about doing anything in root, as their may be irreparable consequences without a proper ROM.
Now for recovery with a replacement ROM. There will be a new ROM release soon, so when it does come out, it will be available to download. That will be your best option to recover if needed. Note... The only way you will hose a device is through a bad flash. So I would stay away from flashing any custom bootloaders, recoverys, kernels or ROM. Until you read up and are well educated on proper flashing techniques. All I can say is stick with developers threads on the specific model and have given plenty of info on the subject. Never blindly take chances.
As for recovery after saferoot.zip... as long as you never flash afterwards, you will never need triangle away, which is a plus... all you need to do is do a factory restore. Yep, no need to run any un-rooting tools, though you can use Supersu's clean up for reinstall and reboot if you want before doing the factory reset.
I know, I have done plenty of testing with custom and factory ROMs. I have personally found no need for customized bootloaders or roms, once I have found where and what to tweak. What little benefit from the customized options that are available, were too little for the trouble involved.
I actually posted about how to mod your device using Xposed installer and 2 to 3 modules and thats all you need to get that really cool custom look if thats what you are going for. With Gravity Box and HK Themer you can mod away semi safely. You still need to be careful with any mod that makes changes in system.

Will it be good to root my Nexus 7 and what will be the precautions that should be taken after rooting it ,as I have heard about accidentally update can u make it clear for me.
And I also want to know that will I lose Android updates after rooting or custom ROM as Android update is the best part of Nexus.
I also want to know should I root my Nexus 7 (2013) or custom ROM it first.
Please give a brief sketch about custom ROM and rooting .which is safe ,easier, and how to root and custom ROM Nexus 7 and what are the precautions to be taken while doing this.
I would be very thankful for u...
Before you root I recommend you back up your data. Then unlock the bootloader. This will wipe all your data. Root has pros and cons. For starters, if you are on 5.0+ it's updates will fail to install. There are many to it techniques, but the easiest for me was to use the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh. Custom operating systems usually have more features, but usually more bugs as well. I own two nexus 7s. One is running 5.1.1 with the latest version of Xposed, the other has the custom ROM called VRToxin which is far more buggy but at the same time far more feature filled. If you install one, ALWAYS follow the instructions to a tee. Lastly, what I love most about root is the apps. Adaway removes ads from all apps. Titanium backup a lows me to backup all apps and there data. Root is usually safe, just be careful.

You should root if you want more features, want to customize more. But you should be ready to invest time and read through forum posts to learn more. You should not root if you are happy with what you have got and is not ready to take some risks. Of course it is not risky it you do your homework before doing anything and follow instructions clearly. Yes, you will lose OTA updates. But it doesn't matter. You can always flash the latest stock ROM if you want, which will be available right here in XDA.
If you want to root, first thing you should do is to unlock the bootloader. You can use any of the toolkits available to do that. Then only you can root. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your data. (I don't remember if the internal storage is wiped, look it up) But after this first instance of data loss, then it's more easy. You can do backups and clean install, or dirty flash. You should install a custom bootloader (like TWRP). I use the multirom TWRP. Multirom is interesting which will allow you to install more than one ROM at once and dual boot easily. You can look up about it. You can then install any ROM you want.
Now sticking with the stock ROM or going for a custom one is your preference. Custom ROMs have many features baked right in. Some custom Roms (like cyanogenmod) even has OTA updates. Personally I like to use stockish ROM and use xposed to get the features I want. Xposed is another super tool which you should look at.
Now talking about precautions, always do a backup before doing anything. This is the no. 1 and the most important one. Personally, I have never done any backing up till now. But I am just careless and have been very lucky. Also, Google is getting better at doing app backups automatically. And most of my data is uploaded to the cloud anyway. As far as I know, it is impossible to hard brick Nexus 7. That means you can always rectify any problems that arise by giving your time. Unless you do something which damages the hardware.

Unlocking and rooting is easy. In order for obtaining root to be beneficial, you have to know how it works. Somewhere between trial-and-error and reading is where knowledge is gained, and knowledge trumps everything in the world of software modification. I never bothered asking any questions, but spent thousands of hours trying and reading for myself.

Hi,
I recently had to return my phone back to stock because of a warranty issue. (battery dying between 25% and 40%)
So chances are high that I will get the phone back with Marshmallow instead of Lollipop.
is there a guide or can anyone give some pointers how to root this device? After a bit of reading I still have a few specific questions, so maybe someone here can help.
A) What TWRP version will I need for the M8s on Marsmallow?
B) Will Magisk systemless root work on this device?
C) If the rooting has succeeded and I remove some bloatware apps from /system/vendor and /privapp and such. Will this trip the Google safety net? Or is safety net not yet applied to our M8s devices?
Thanks!
I don't personally have the M8s version specifically. But as the device forum sections for all the M8 versions in general are becoming pretty quiet; I'll try to help you to the best of my knowledge.
A) The TWRP recovery posted in this (M8s) forum section should work fine on Marshmallow. Looks like it's only updated to 2.8.6
B) Should work, yes. I would suggest the current stable Magisk version, which is 14.0
Backup your stock (unrooted) ROM before trying to root (as you always should - this is best practice and just good common sense). Then if anything goes wrong, you can easily restore to stock.
C) Not sure. But I can tell you on my current device (OnePlus 3T) that removing system (bloat) apps does not trip safety net.
Hi @redpoint73,
Thanks. That takes away some worries and gives me some confidence for giving it a third shot . Nandroid's don't work on the M8s unfortunately, I've tried this once since I botched something up during my first root attempt, put back the Nandroid and my Bluetooth was dead. (and probably more, but I didn't investigate it further back then.)
As in regards of removing bloat, since HTC has the S-on I was only able to remove the pre-installed apps from within TWRP (or else the apps were back after a reboot), so I guess this process remains the same?
Thanks so far and I'll report back my results in this topic. Now I first have to wait to see if they give me my warranty, since the bootloader said relocked and the firm I had to send it to is notorious for blaming factory faults on rooting of the phone. Fingers crossed!

Should be the same, yes.
The reason for this, is that the system is write-protected, even with root. On the M8, there is a kernel mod which disables the write protection (allows you to modify system while booted to OS), but I don't know if there is such a mod for the M8s. But if you were able to do it in TWRP, the same should apply on Marshmallow.
So I finally got my phone back, or well, to be accurate, I got another phone (albeit another M8s) back under warranty. I guess they f'd it up during repairs or something. And as expected my phone was upgraded to Marshmallow.
Anyhow, the more I read about Magisk and systemless rooting the more lost I seem to get lost. Is there somewhere a step by step guide for obtaining root on this phone?
Let me recap from what I've understood so far (SOURCE 1, SOURCE 2 and SOURCE 3)
1) Backup my boot partition, I am still searching how to accomplish this without rooting the phone first. Booting to TWRP without installing resulted in mangling some data in the boot partition, so unfortunately that is not an option. (blanks the OS version)
2) Boot to TWRP and flash the Magisk zip file. There should be an option somewhere in TWRP to enable systemless rooting.
3) ?
So if anyone knows if I am on the right (or wrong) track please let me know .
Thijs
Edit: I can't seem to get the phone boot TWRP for some reason (from my harddrive htc_fastboot boot twrp.img). This used to be possible on my old M8s which I had send in for repairs. Do I really have to flash it because I have no way of backing up the old original recovery .
Okay, since it is kinda dead in here let me bump this for anyone in the same situation. I've managed to install Magisk successfully. The steps involved
1) unlock bootloader
2) flash twrp (htc_fastboot flash recovery twrp.img) I've used the latest version from Captain Throwback which I've found in the OP of the Void_Zero Lineage OS thread.
3) boot the phone and copy magisk systemless root zip and the apk file to your internal storage Grab the uninstaller as well in the topic.
4) reboot to recovery (adb reboot bootloader)
5) flash the zip from within recovery
6) reboot the phone and install the Magisk app.
7) done
Use this guide on your own risk. It worked flawlessly for me but no guarantees .
Hello all, sorry if I've happened to missed the guides.
I've rooted a few phones in the past and installed custom rooms, however, I do so infrequently and every time things change.
I only have a loose grasp of GIS roms, so I'll just let that one slide.
I have the mi A2 lite (obviously) and would like to root it or get a custom room that works well.
I don't mind stock, since it is not bloated.
I installed twrp, upgraded from android 8 to 9, then twrp disappeared.
I've read somewhere that I need to disable encryption for twrp, but maybe that's no longer possible that I'm on Android 9.
If I stay stock, will or will I not be able to continue OTA?
TL;DR: Hoping for a basic guide for how to root. I wouldn't mind custom rom, but stock is fine.
Thanks!
You dont have to install TWRP for root
You could install magisk and get OTA updates
Hello all, Hope you are having great time.
I have just bought Poco F3 (Global variant), and have tried unlocking bootloader, and currently awaiting 168 hours. i have few queries if you brief me since this is my 1st Xiaomi device, coming from simple & easier Oneplus 5,
1) If i change to another pc to unlock bootloader after 168 hours, or if my old pc died, will the counter restart in case of changed PC?
2) I have problem and confusion in getting current stable TWRP since the forum is mixing things up for me probably because of my lack of knowledge, so basically, i want TWRP for my MIUI v12.5.2 Global, through which, i can flash ROMs or mods for my likings, so if you guys link to current stable TWRP, it would be really great.
3) I also read that if we flash Magisk, TWRP's removed, and if we flash TWRP, Magisk will be removed, so the above current twrp version has fixed this? initially, i just want to flash magisk to root official pre-installed miui os, after sometime, i will go to custom ROMs.
4) Last question, how can we flash stock miui ROM, are we only able to flash stock miui through fastboot or now also possible via TWRP?.
I Would appreciate if you clear the above query, i have searched a lot, but things gets confusing for me, and can't make it clear which twrp, or method to flash will work. so having to ask you. Hope you will understand.

1. As long as you login with the same account and not before the 168 hours passed, you are ok to continue the process. The countdown is linked to your mi.com account not to your PC.
2. TWRP 3.5x is ok. It doesn't really matter what MIUI version you use, you can install some custom ROMs but SOME custom roms require different Custom Recoveries and ADB on windows (havoc, Arrow... have their own process.) Read recommended procedure carefully for each ROM because they differ.
3. That happens to idiots that DO NOT READ ISTRUCTIONS all the way. Some ROMs require installing TWRP twice. Once to boot (temporary) and again later in a permanent manner using a different method. Each ROM has step by step procedure so problems can be avoided. After you permanently install TWRP you can install magisk (usually using boot image). If you are not careful you install TWRP, install new ROM and find out you reverted to last recovery or only have fastboot and you have to start all over.
4. DO NOT FLASH MIUI USING TWRP. EVER!!! IT WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE PERMANENTLY and you will need EDL Authorized Service.
Only use OFFICIAL MIUI FLASH TOOL to return to Original MIUI OS (RECOVERY OR FASTBOOT VERSION). All 2021 Xiaomi phones have a antirollback protection to prevent you to return to Original software. Only some versions of MIUI can be installed on some versions of thehe smartphones. Ex. My Poco F3 (eu) accepts reinstalling only MIUI 12.0.4 and update afterwards to 12.5.3.
Oficial Mi Flash TOOL prevents you to install the wrong software and to brick your phone
TWRP doesn't care about this Rollback Protection, forces MIUI installation regardless and bricks your phone permanently. Only official service can bring it back to life afterwards for 30 to 100 usd

Ohh I see, the last answer has opened my eyes, this is why it is always better to ask some loyal people if something's new, so the EU ROM in their forum should also be flashed only via mi tool? Beginners step-by-step guide to installing Xiaomi.EU on POCO F3?
I have finally unlocked the bootloader (no guides mention it will wipe my phone at the same time!). Now I am looking again at Roms, HentaiOS and ArrowOS were contenders but Xiaomi.EU sounds like the best of all factors, a Poco F3 centric...
forum.xda-developers.com
I never installed Xiaomi EU or One OS.
The two main reasons I don't use any MIUI based OS are:
1. those annoying 10 seconds of waiting for almost every permision required by a lot of apps;
2. the main reason, because i like to use Nova launcher combined with gesture navigation. The Stock Android 11 does not allow users to disable navigation buttons outside of the Stock MIUI/Poco Launcher.
Also I am not 100% sure if Widevine L1 certification works in Xiaomi.eu. I know there were issues at one point.
That is needed for using streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video.... in FullHD, and also, maybe most importantly, is needed for Banking/Payment apps, including Contactless (NFC) payments.

So can you guys please simplify it:
After unlocking bootloader, I will only root stock miui already installed, I boot to recovery via fastboot, install into ramdisk select twrp file, and then flash magisk?
I will install unofficial miui like oneos or EU after sometime, what should be the correct method, via twrp or fastboot?

I state, every modding operation is not without risks because you touch crucial parts of the system and unexpected events can happen as happened to the guy in the post, so you have to pay close attention to what you do, you don't have to be in a hurry and you have to make sure to have a PC with all the drivers and that the system is stable, otherwise any interruption of the flashing process, for the most diverse reasons, compromise the integrity of the phone and the only way to save it is to bring it to assistance.
