Fastboot Failed (remote: Permission denied) - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my phone is stuck in a bootloop. I'm not 100% sure how this happened, but I also can't access recovery. Every time I try, it goes to the ASUS screen, then boots back into bootloader. (this happened before I got soft bricked.) In other words, I can't use adb shell. So my only chance of unbricking is using fastboot, but it says permission is denied. Why would it tell me that?
EDIT: I got recovery working. I formatted my SD card, then injected CWM so I could reflash SuperSU.zip. Now I can get to recovery, but still not use adb shell. Storage doesn't show up on my PC via USB. When I try adb sideload, it says "error: device not found."

Make sure you have the LATEST ADB drivers. Older drivers just don't seem to work...
What commands are you using in fastboot and from what firmware are you trying to flash from?
If you have the latest firmware it seems you need to flash ALL partitions to go back.
Just make sure your downloads are good and don't flash the wrong image on the wrong partition. Copy and paste can be your enemy here if you aren't careful...

I figured it out. I flashed stock FW from a .zip. That got me out of the bootloop. As for commands not working, I found an alternate method to unlock the bootloader, and that seemed to be my problem.

Cool, as long as you got to your destination, the journey doesn't matter...
(and yes, I found that in a fortune cookie...)

Having the same problem, i have the
C:\adb>fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
sending 'fastboot' (14826 KB)...
How is that alternative method to unlock the bootloader?
Every time i try to go into recovery mode it doesnt open :/

you're welcome.
i found the solution in another obscure forum after a few days of Google-Fu.
on a sadder note. my screen gave up to the vertical line problem and Asus denied my warranty claim for being "Rooted". i unrooted, but they still know lol.
whatever tho. this phone has been nothing but problems in the 6 months i've owned it. back to Samsung whenever they ship that piece of junk back to me.

I get same message...Failed (remote: Permission denied) but the phone has bricked and I cannot get into the phone to disable the lockscreen.
Any ideas for a work around?
Also, I can access fastboot commands but not adb
and the phone will not enter into recovery on it's own.

Same issue

Yeah, I have the same problem, so it's not just you!

who ever getting issue with remote permission denied or unable to flash via adb side load. down load raw firmware. extract it. place files in adb fastboot folder. open command windows here. and run mannual commands to install firmware

How do I get past this "permission denied" issue of fastboot ? Disabling the lockscreen surely was not the key to my problem.
I have also always allowed USB connections from the machine I am using for this fastbooting thing. Thank you!
LE: it was a matter of linux permissions . Just added +x and worked. Now I have advanced to the <Waiting for any device> error

multiple things you can try... unlocking bootloader if locked. flash dnx, ifwi , splash screen, boot , droidboot images. then go to recovery and factory data reset. then clear cache partition. and sideload firmware via adb

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Root and Fastboot not working

My Sprint Galaxy Nexus Jellybean is not rooting and will not flash a recovery. Here is what i did before the problem
Installed the Samsung Drivers
Installed and set up ADB and SDK tools
unlocked my bootloader
flashed TWRP recovery
Made a Nandroid Backup
flashed a rooted rom that was apparently for ICS (but I didn't know at the time)
These were all per qbking77's root method for Sprint Galaxy Nexus. After I flashed the rom I waited for 20 minutes for my phone to reboot and it never did. So I pulled the battery and went back into the recovery. I restored my original backup and rebooted successfully. I decided to attempt flashing the rom (that I didn't know wasn't meant for my software) again. This time when i went into recovery mode, the picture of the android with the caution symbol appeared, meaning that there was no recovery found. Now when I attempt to reflash TWRP recovery or any recovery for that matter (Now using the Galaxy Nexus toolkit for Jellybean) the program says
sending 'recovery' <xxxx KB>
FAILED <remote: Invalid command>
finished. total time: 0.012s
An Error Occurred.
and on the phone side for TWRP it says FASTBOOT STATUS - download 0055d000
and for Clockwork mod touch it says FASTBOOT STATUS - download 004c8000
Before I do anything but plug my phone into the computer, the phone says FASTBOOT STATUS - FAILInvalid Command
Since this started happening I have tried
Re-Locking and unlocking the bootloader
Uninstalling and reinstalling the toolkit
uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers
Factory resetting my phone
Is my phone just unrootable now? Please someone help!

The "picture of the android with the caution symbol" is the stock recovery. You booted into android after restoring your nandroid. During that boot, android automatically reflashed the stock recovery which overwrote TWRP. To prevent this, you need to rename or remove either the stock recovery image or the script that will flash it on boot. Look at the 101 & FAQ post linked in my signature to find out where these files are.
As for unable to flash a custom recovery, don't use a toolkit. Just use fastboot from the commandline.

just remount /system on recovery, either by adb shell, either by the recovery menu after fastboot flash. boot the recovery directly from bootloader.
after /system is rw, through 'adb shell', custom recoveries have a pre-rooted/busyboxed environment, which allows you to do maintenance. this is the mount command to run in adb shell:
'mount -o rw /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system /system'
then just remove the files, 'umount /system' when you're done, reboot.

What are you trying to do exactly? I've read the entire thread, and I'm confused. If you want to go back to stock, look at the "flash" link in my sig. If you want to root, look at the "root" link. If you want to know about mounting /system, look at the "basics" link.

whats the exact fastboot command you're using to flash twrp?
problem was you made a backup of stock, which has files that restore, on boot, the stock recovery.

I tried your root method, and clockwork mod booted up, but the version of superuser that you linked to failed, so i rebooted my device and downloaded the jellybean version of superuser. The only thing I can think of is flash the LC03 bootloader. Try flashing that first, and make sure you have the latest version of fastboot. Then try again.

Thanks all you guys but what actually ended up happening was I successfully booted into clockworkmod touch recovery since that was the only one my phone hadn't blocked yet. While in recovery i flashed supersu (the right version) and rebooted. It asked if I wanted to remove the files that flash stock recovery on boot and I selected yes. Well that didn't do jack crap, so with my newly acquired superuser powers, I deleted the files i needed to. Then I tried to flash another recovery, but they were still giving me errors. So here is the process I took completely out of luck and hopefulness that I knew what I was doing. From the command prompt with my phone in fastboot, I typed "fastboot flash recovery cwmt.img". this gave me the same "fastboot <remote: invalid command>" error, so I typed the same command and it once again gave me the "sending xxxxkb" message where it would sit on that same line until I killed the program. So I did kill the program and opened another command prompt in the same folder. I typed the same command for the third time, and everything went smoothly from there. I'm currently rooted and running Cyanogenmod 10. Once again, thanks to everyone who helped I greatly appreciate it.

Bootloop without USB Debug

My ZE551ML was rooted and I decided to update it being unaware that I was supposed to unroot it before updating. Once I got to the recovery menu, I attempted to sideload the newest firmware but the device was not found despite being able to be found during the bootloop. I then performed a factory reset and now it is stuck on a bootloop and cannot be detected by adb at any point.
U can use fastboot to flash ur device
But be careful with it u can hard brick ur device if done the wrong way

But how do I fastboot to flash? Every tutorial I found told me to use adb sideload which I never found possible.
Edit:
I solved my problem by copying the firmware I downloaded into an external sd card under the name MOFD_SDUPDATE.zip and going to recovery mode.
download full firmware according to ur device from here https://mega.co.nz/#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw give Thanks @shakalaca for this
download (Z00A)2.19.40.18 if u want to unlock ur bootloader cause latest one cause problems with unlocking bootloader
when the device is off press power wait till it vibrates once then immediately press vol up button
u will boot into fastboot mode
there u can use fastboot commands
now form ur pc go to the path where u downloaded the firmware
press & hold shift & right click
select open command window here
now in command prompt give these commands
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot reboot
all done ur device will reboot
now u have a rooted device
remember if u want to update than first unroot it reboot than update
where do u get the system.img?
im also in a similar situation where im out of usb debug cause of factory reset

I have the same problem than vinod.katakam!
I try to update my Asus Zenfone 2 Laser (ze601kl), to a recente version of Android, because i'm stuck on a older version of Lollipop.
My system had a SKU WW, so i downloaded the recent version WW (marshmallow) from Asus website, and treid to update, and that gives me an error. But i reboot the phone a it works fine. But still on my old android version.
Then i tried to just update to a more recent version of Lollipop, the process appears to start fine, but then it gives me an error. Now, i tried to reboot and i end up with a endless bootloop.
I tried everithing, update by adb (cant open the file), update by sdcard (E:Error in /sideload/package.zip (Status 1) E: fota_return_code 408), and fastboot boot.img, recovery.img, but on system.img says the file is to big.
I dont have de USB Debbugind activated. Is that a problem?
I dont have important data on the phone, i just want to make it work again.
Please help!!!!

Hello guys!
Well, i manage to understand my problem and solv it!
I bought my phone from Gearbest, and the problem begins there. Why? Because, regarless my phone is a CN device, it came somehow with a WW sku. You must know that a CN device have system partition smaller than the WW device.
So, when i tried to updated it with a more recent WW system there was no room for that, and the instalation stops with a error message.
After many "Trial and error", i understand what my problem is, and tried to install a CN system version by "fastboot flash" with a system.img with root that i find here: "https://mega.nz/#F!lodnzDhK!H5ChxausDTyko1qGlnF7dw"
To fastboot i used the fastboot tool that sukhwant717 told me to, in the post #15.
Well, that worked, so i now have a phone working. Them i go to Asus website and downloaded the latest CN firmware to my divece, copy it by USB to the internal memory of my device and upgrade it.
So, now i have a phone working with a factory system but with no google apps.
I found this website with google installer: "https://www.digitbin.com/google-installer-apk/" follow the intructions and finaly i have Google play in my phone!
Now everithing works fine!
I hope that my story could help someone with the same problem!

[Q] fastboot flash system system.img FAILED <remote: Permission denied>, need fix
Hey,
I have a ZE551ML and want to install CM. I am following the guide here. I have run into a problem on the first step which points to the guide here. At step 7 of this guide it has me use the command: fastboot flash system system.img. This fails with the error in the title of this post: FAILED <remote: Permission denied>. I have been googling this and no one has a concrete solution. Currently my phone will not even boot as the three fastboot commands before this one worked just fine and replaced the files. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Eric.
Even though it'll say permission denied, flashing recovery WILL work. From there you can either flash a custom ROM (from twrp) or reflash stock firmware (through stock recovery).
That's the only fix I've found. To flash a usable ROM and boot into it. May need to turn on USB debugging in dev options. But after doing those two things, fastboot will stop with the permission denied issues.
Hey, thanks for the quick reply.
Currently the phone does not boot at all.
What do you mean by flashing recovery?
When I enter recovery mode at the moment it says applying update and then gives me the android on its side with the red triangle and error! below it.
So i can't currently flash though recovery mode as far as I can tell.

Found a guide here dealing with this error, working on it.
Hey,
So I got my phone unbricked by flashing the recovery with the stock ASUS firmware "ASUS ZenFone 2=ZE551ML(Z00AD/Z00ADA/Z00ADB/Z00ADC) software Image: V2.19.40.22 for WW SKU only" available at the ASUS official website and following a guide at an outside link that I can't post.
Now, I have enabled developer mode and turned on USB debugging but am now getting the permission denied on all fastboot commands of the OTA guide, step 7.
Does anyone know a good next step?
Hey, managed to root the phone with: Temporary CWM
After setting USB debug on did you connect the phone to PC via USB and authenticated the PC? When you connect the phone to PC via USB with debugging on, it should pop up a window on the phone after a few seconds asking you for permission for the PC. You can checkmark the box that says always trust this computer's RSA fingerprints or something along those lines.
Hope this helps!

Yes, I did do this but I have now checked the check mark to make it always trust my computer. I then booted into fastboot but still get permission denied despite having root through CWM and having this checked off.
When I got root through CWM by the fastboot tethered recovery it gave me permission denied on all steps but it still booted into CWM recovery. I was then able to install SuperSU to root it, though it gave me an error, and I used Root Checkerr to see if the phone was rooted. It says it is but I am still unable to flash any images onto the phone since I re-installed the stock firmware.
I'm super confused about this whole thing, IDK what to do now.
Flash stock recovery again and adb sideload the stock firmware all over.
This is the latest up-to-date 2.20.40.59 firmware: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/ZenFone/ZE551ML/UL-Z00A-WW-2.20.40.59-user.zip
If that doesn't work then idk. You can Google the permission denied errors for fastboot like I did and there are various possible problems/solutions.
So, none of this is working.
I installed the latest firmware as you suggested and got root again by using Temporary CWM. However despite anything I try (been googling for hours with little help found) I cannot get the phone to let me flash anything I always get the permission denied error.

You can still flash recovery via fastboot even though it'll say permission denied it works. That's all you really need to do as you can install stock firmware via stock recovery or flash ROMs and whatever else through twrp recovery.

How can i tell if twrp recovery is successfully installed?
Hey, took a few days to cool off.
So it does seem I can replace recovery even though it says permission denied. I do this by using fastboot to flash the recovery, then from the bootloader on the phone I select restart bootloader and then when the bootloader re-appears I enter recovery mode ( I do this to prevent the possible replacing of the custom recovery by the stock OS). However recovery mode never boots when the latest twrp recovery is on the phone, I just end up back in the bootloader. When I flash the stock recovery back on this method successfully enters recovery mode. This also occurs if I just directly enter recovery mode after flashing twrp recovery.
Any thoughts?

Same here. I'm using elevated cmd, and fastboot is recognizing my device. But I can't flash anything, can't erase cahce, can't reformat partitions. Always failed due to permissions. And I'm stuck in a bootloop, and can't get to recovery (it just goes back into the bootloop when I try). Literally the only avenue I have to interact with this phone is fastboot, and I can't do anything with it.

Zenfone 2 ze551ml Bricked, permission denied, No TWRP, Xfstk not working

I have tried everything and everywhere I hit a brick wall,
So my screen stopped working and I got that replaced by Asus. When my Phone came back all appeared to be working well untill 2 weeks after.
My cameras stopped working, the flashlight stopped working, the sd card slot stopped working and the SIM slot 1 stopped working.
So I wiped the cache and now the Phone does not boot anymore.
Tried to update rom via ADB in recovery: permission denied,
tried to backup via adb in bootloader: cant find device
Tried flashing the bootloader, permision denied,
tried using Xfstk, screen on xfstk remains blank
Updating via sd is not possible anymore since the SD card does not get mounted in the bootloader...
Anyone any idea?
Does the phone's correct serial # appear when you type "fastboot devices"?
When you say the xFSTK screen stays blank, do you mean you can't see any writing? If this is the case, did you install the drivers before installing xFSTK?

Yes
and yes I did install the drivers in safe mode before installing Xfstk
"C:\adb>fastboot flash boot boot.img

sending 'boot' (11868 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.592s]

I'm not sure if you need to install the Intel USB drivers in safe mode but I just installed them as an Admin and then ran iFSTK as an Admin.
There is no need to flash a boot.img file because iFSTK will install a temp bootloader and boot into fastboot mode. Then, run Asus Flash Tool as an admin and flash a raw file to the phone.

I can get into fastboot mode, however everything I do in it gives the message permission denied. Maybe I do not need xFstk, but Asus Flash tool does not run as it quits with the message permission denied
Are you flashing a RAW file in AFT?

Was the phone running MM or LP?
Maybe re-flash a stock recovery and sideload a stock ROM?

It was running last MM
I tried flashing the last two available (both LP) raw roms
It may be that the bootloader is locked. Try flashing a stock MM recovery and then use the "update from SD card" option to flash a stock ROM from the SD card, assuming the SD card is recognized by recovery or try to sideload a stock ROM.

Well apperantly sideloading works again (sd card is out on recovery, can not mount)
however:
C:\adb>adb sideload UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.184-user.zip
serving: 'UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.184-user.zip' (~53%) * failed to read command: Invalid argument
and then the Phone crashes
Same with differend roms
% differ
Do you see the phone's serial # in fastboot mode? If not, try pressing volume up 3 times.

Yes I do in fastboot
ADB does not detect.
ADB sideload does but the 1234567abdcde
You see 1234... on the phone's screen in fastboot mode? If yes, press volume up 3 times and look at the screen again as it should show the correct serial #.

Yes,
but aftert flashing for some time it says permission denied
I'm not sure but it could be that the bootloader is locked so it can't flash the entire ROM which results in a permission denied error.
Did you try powering off the phone, opening iFSTK as ad admin, change the settings as required, start the download, connecting the phone, press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds, release the power, and let iFSTK try to load a bootloader?

Ifstk does only show a blank screen on all my pc's just tried 5 of m,
If iFSTK shows a blank screen, you should uninstall the program, re-install the USB drivers, reinstall iFSTK, and try again. I also had the blank screen problem in iFSTK but was able to get it working by restoring a Win7 image and starting over.

until a few moments, yes, I can unlock and lock the bootloader or reboot the system. But nothing more when I try to put a ROM or twrp gives error, in Rom talks that the system was not found, in twrp says that there is no partition.
Try to unlock the bootloader and flash a fastboot image using MiFlash
You can get the fastboot image from this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/ota-v9-6-4-0-odlmiff-t3823913
Download the V10.0.3.0.PDLMIXM fastboot link and after connecting your phone to your PC in fastboot mode, use MiFlash 2017.4.25.0 (it works for me, older versions wouldn't flash the image correctly) to search for the downloaded image (in my case it was C:\daisy_global_images_V10.0.3.0.PDLMIXM_9.0) and presh flash. When it finishes it should reboot normally. You will need to reinstall TWRP and everything afterwards.
So, it happened to me after I tried to temporary root and install the gcam.
First of all, check if the cellphone boots normally with the OEM locked, if so, follow the steps below.
I am at the 10.0.4 version and v18.1 magisk (not anymore thanks God). I just *flashed (on fastboot mode) a 10.0.4 boot.img and locked the oem, then I reboot and works fine.
*remember always flashing using the vol- pressed
that's it, hope I can help you.

That's what I did. I tried installing gcam, but I forgot to back it up.
I will try the options that you have passed me and then I will tell the result
