I read the guide that allowed us to enable the native hotspot on the Verizon G3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/development/mod-verizon-g3-hotspotmod-g2-apk-t2852152), and there have been some minor changes on the G4. I also decided to do the simple approach of using a file manager such as SolidExplorer instead of Terminal Emulator.
First things first, you need root to enable this. To learn how to root your device, visit here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/orig-development/root-tmo-vzw-intl-variants-soon-root-lg-t3164765
Step 1:
Download the modified hotspot provisioning file below (unchanged from the G3, just renamed)
Navigate using your preferred root-capable file explorer (I prefer SolidExplorer) to the download location
Cut/copy this file to prepare to move it
Step 2:
Navigate to /System/App/HotspotProvision
Rename HotspotProvision.apk to HotspotProvision.bak
Reported to not be necessary:
Navigate to the arm64 sub-folder
Rename HotspotProvision.odex to HotspotProvision.bakdex
Step 3:
Paste/move the downloaded modified HotspotProvisionVZWG4.apk file to /system/app/HotspotProvision
Step 4:
Long-press on the file > properties to change the permissions
Change the permissions to 644 (rw-, r--, r--) You can also run chmod 644 /system/app/HotspotProvision/HotspotProvisionVZWG4.apk
Step 5:
Reboot
You now have access to the native hotspot!
Common Issues:
If you get an error when toggling the native hotspot, make sure you rename the file with the .bak and .bakdex file extension. Simply renaming the file name while leaving the .apk and .odex at the end will cause conflicts and it will not work.

Good tutorial.
I was able to make this work without renaming the odex file, but if I have any problems going forward I'll do that.
Confirmed working here. Thanks!

The odex file was leftover from the G3 tutorial. To be honest I didn't try it without renaming it, but that's good to know!
Cannot thank you enough for this..
In the past 5 days Ived received my new phone after long trying to stick it through with Galaxy Nexus (toro), root was released, and now this.. Everything is amazing.
Thanks a bunch man. Worked like a charm.
Thank you

What plan do you have? This is only for those without tethering allowed, such as unlimited data users.

Not Working for Me
So, not sure what I'm doing wrong...I followed instructions and after rebooting the phone, I go in and try to turn Mobile Hotspot 'ON' and get an error, "Activity is not exist this device"
WTF?!?
I just got the phone last week and de-bloated/froze OTA. I'm thinking I probably froze something that's needed for native wifi hotspot, does anyone have any ideas?
BTW, I'm on rooted 10B and I had been using FoxFi up until now, with no problems (beside it being slow).
Edit: Here are the apps that I have frozen:
DTIgnite
GCUV
Google Play Movies & TV
Google Play Music
Google+
LG Health Agent
SnapPage

Did you rename the old file extension to a bak, or rename just the file name? That's the error you will get when renaming just the file name while keeping the extension a apk.

Thanks for the pointer, it lead me in the right direction. I did rename the extension to .bak, but the extension of the HotspotProvisionVZWG4 file was .zip, whoops! Rookie move.
Renamed to .apk, rebooted and working great!!
I was about 5 minutes away from doing a factory restore, really appreciate the reply!
Doing a speed test on a connected client machine (and only having 2 bars of 4G), I'm getting about 25Mbps down and 6Mbps up
This phone is now everything that I wanted in my upgrade (except an unlocked bootloader, but I can't be greedy at this point) and I'm loving it. Thank you so much!

Thanks for the Tut and file. I got my Hotspot up and running in about 3 mins.

What speeds are you seeing at speedtest.net via HotSpot. I've seen declining speeds since the LG G3 12B. 23C was slower, and 24b was even slower in my area.
I'd be interested in your results.
Thanks,

THANKS!!!
I've been waiting for this day for a long time (whenever the LG LG4 VS986 was released). Oddly enough for me it didnt work at first. I put the .odex file back to its original name and it seemed to just work from there. Nevertheless THANK YOU !!!!!
This was the ONE thing I've been waiting for.
Still rocking the 'unlimited' VZW Data.

I have absolutely no experience with that however, I did a search on Google and this thread popped up. All I searched for was "how to edit build.prop":
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1236732
Anyone feel free to verify/correct me as I have never edited my build.prop before and I don't intend to. This is for anyone who may be looking for an answer. I won't say it is the answer as I've never done this before but hopefully this helps someone get on the proper train of thought.
if you're rooted try removing or renaming the phone.apk in /system/app. Make a copy of the ROM .zip to flag the original first in case something doesn't work ans definitely a backup in cwm. This should disable the activation nag and data phone capabilities. Not a good idea if you want to use it as a phone.

If you can't use your phone for text, data, and talking, you can disable it as it essentially disables the ROM's use of the cell's radio (wifi should still work).
Couple ways to do it:
1. remove the phone.apk from the zip and transfer new zip to sdcard and wipe system in recovery and re-flash rom.
2. Using root explorer or some kind of app that can write to /system, delete or rename the Phone.apk found in /system/app and reboot. If you get force close messages, just battery pull and boot the phone up again.
And, no there's no editing of the file itself just making the android system not able to find it. Not officially supported by devs to disable the radio but if you're having struggles to skip activation it is definitely worth a shot.

You're talking about the screen that comes up when you first turn the phone on after you first buy the phone?
There's a way to do it without changing the build.prop, I'll look for it. I actually did it when j first got my phone.
Some people have said if you tap the top left, top right, bottom right, and bottom left corners in that order it bypasses it.
It works for some, the way I did it involved dialing some **number and changing somethings to 0000000

Here I found a link to where it says how to tap the corners
http://www.androidcentral.com/bypass-activation-screen-your-android-device
And I found the way I was talking about when you call **778 and change the settings
1. Select emergency call and dial ##778.
2. Select edit and enter service password 000000.
3. Select NAM Settings.
4. Change Mobile Directory number to 0000000000 (Ten digits).
5. Change MIN1 to 0000000 (Seven digits).
6. Change Mobile Country Code to 000 (Three digits).
7. As you back out "Commit the Change".
8. The phone will auto reboot in 10 seconds.
#2 works permanently as I remember and it's pretty easy to do.
Does anyone know how to get Swype working without the "Screen resolution not supported" error popping up on ICS?
Also, on CM7, I could tether using the program wireless tether but now it doesn't even show up under available networks. Any workarounds or good substitutions?
Thanks in advance
I posted about this a day or two ago. . .
What are you using as your wifi source?
I think it's an issue with ad hoc networks. The KF doesn't seem to be able to see them currently.
Its just my droid charge using the app "Wireless Tether".
Just curious if there was a workaround for CM9. It worked great when I was using CM7.
Sorry I didn't see your thread. I did some searching and "tethering" pulls up a million different threads, some about bluetooth, others about which apps to use, etc. Seemed like a crap shoot.
to get swype working you have to sideload the apk.
1.) download this apk: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/31821539/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk
2.) copy to: /system/app (using something like root explorer)
3.) install the apk
4.) enjoy

Hi All,
Status:
I managed 1) root the phones 2) copy over the standard "carrier" folder via root explorer 3) recopy the apns-xml file. 4) edit via adb the build.prop file.
With all these I am able to make calls and receive texts on the phone. But for the life, I cannot figure out the data problem.
I double checked my .prop file and have for sure set them to spr.
So my questions is
1) any quick ideas I can try?
2) how can i tell if AT&T or I am the issue
3) is there a custom rom which I can flash and it just "works"
4) is there a good place online where I Can sell these phones aside from craigslist?

Thanks a lot for the reply. I followed your instructions. Since I was using stock 4.4.2, there was some minor adjustments that came up.
0) I flashed stock firmware and via phone notification update to 4.4.2
1) I rooted the phone
6) Done and Done
7) Done ( I also tried via adb shell )
8) I could not manually edit the build.prop file. Each time I did, it would cause a stall on reboot, never gets to boot screen. So I had to do this
via adb I set the settings to spr
9) I use radio checker to set the exact same settings
10) do I need this step for data?
Lol
Sorry. I re read your suggession. Didnt see it. Lemme give it a try.

settings.db file does not have settings
After using SQL and looking at the settings db file in, data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db, I cannot see the assist_dial or assist_dial_init_db_check fields.
Now I am only stuck where the phone crashes when I add an apn?

Stock ANK4 T-Mobile ROM deodexed by jovy23 and debloated by myself. Really nothing else to say about it. Check out jovy23's thread for what he's done.
Instructions: Wipe everything in recovery (shouldn't need to tell you to backup first) and flash the zip. Done.

Nice! Thanks
It's been a long time , and seems like u changed carriers also ? Good to see your work again.
Cool
My Mobile Hotspot force closes upon enabling it. Can anyone confirm? Other than that, smooth like butter.
Can confirm. Hot spot FCs on trying to activate. Must've removed something necessary for it. Otherwise I love how light this rom is.
EDIT: I have jovy23's original rom on my phone. If anyone has any idea what app I'd have to reinstall to get the hotspot working again I'll grab it from there, put it into system/priv-app, change the permissions, and reboot to see if it works.

EDIT: Does S-Health work for you guys? Also I think that if were keeping S-Health we should also keep Samsung Galaxy Apps since it's the only way to update it.
I really like this rom. Two things though. Can anyone tell me what files I need to restore to get the Samsung Browser working and the Smart Select for the S-Pen? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: So I figured out the Smart Select but I still need to restore the samsung browser.
EDIT 2: I figured out the browser as well.
Also, is there anyway to get the Samsung Account integrated? I would like to download the extra camera filters. I realize that this is a debloated ROM, but if anyone has a link to re-install some of Sammy's apps, that would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Found a zip file. =)

really slimmed down thats how phones should come out of the box + the weather widget. I want the weather widget back, tried installing the app from another rom but it does not work properly.

I restored the files myself. I used good old fashioned google searching to figure out which files needed to be restored. But I'm glad the rom was built without them. I prefer how slim the rom is and what I wanted may not be what others wanted or needed.

I noticed that the dev of this rom also removed the libs along with the apps. You may need to find out if there're some missing lib files to s-health. At least that was the case when I added back the sbrowser.
How to re-enable smart select, the galaxy app store, tethering, and Samsung account.
This is how I got everything working. For smart select you grab Pinboard.apk from another rom (I grabbed everything from jovy23's original stock deodexed rom), place it in system/priv-app and change it's permissions to match the other apks there. I used ES file explorer for this with root explorer on and changing the system option to R/W (Tap on root explorer after turning it on to change this option). For the galaxy app store grab GalaxyApps_3xh.apk place it in the system/priv-app folder and change its permissions like before. Theres also a apk called SamsungAppsWidget_BannerStyle_common.apk which goes in system/app but I'm unsure if it's neccesary. If you are adding it just remember to change its permissions. For mobile Hotspot grab TetheringAutomation.apk and TetheringProvision.apk place them in system/app and change permissions. For the Samsung Account grab Samsungservice2_xxhdpi_RTL.apk place it in system/priv-app and change permissions. You are able to log in to the galaxy app store without this but it is necessary to get full access to your samsung accounts synching capabilities, like with s-health for example. Let me know if you need help with anything.
EDIT: Reboot after you've done everything!
Blame @ProTekk
Thanks man

After digging around a bit, I've managed to get my mother in law's phone hotspotting again. I'm standing on the shoulders of Giants here, so please don't credit me with anything. I just wanted to 1) archive this in case I need to repeat it at some point 2) help others out who may need some access, but don't want to double pay for it.
Her phone is rooted with tdhite's skyhigh kernel installed and majisk module, but I was still getting the "not subscribed" error when I tried to launch a hotspot. I grabbed a root explorer and navigated to system>etc> where I found a file named old-apns-conf.xml
I opened that file and added ",dun" (no quotes) after every instance of mms (I think there were 3 or 4). I saved the file and she was in business. This method has survived a reboot, so that's nice too.
I don't know if it's relevant it not, but we have a legacy family unlimited plan.
Thanks but I can't even see the hotspot option in settings
this works great thanks.

I'll take a look at things, but the kernel Magisk module performs the task of updating the database so no mods to any xml files should be required. That breaks the "systemless" aspect of Magisk so could harm the ability to pass SafetyNet.
Anyway -- not sure why you have to modify the APNs that way -- as I mentioned above, the sky-high Magisk module handles that already by directly updating the telephony databases.
