Does anyone know how to get Swype working without the "Screen resolution not supported" error popping up on ICS?
Also, on CM7, I could tether using the program wireless tether but now it doesn't even show up under available networks. Any workarounds or good substitutions?
Thanks in advance
I posted about this a day or two ago. . .
What are you using as your wifi source?
I think it's an issue with ad hoc networks. The KF doesn't seem to be able to see them currently.
Its just my droid charge using the app "Wireless Tether".
Just curious if there was a workaround for CM9. It worked great when I was using CM7.
Sorry I didn't see your thread. I did some searching and "tethering" pulls up a million different threads, some about bluetooth, others about which apps to use, etc. Seemed like a crap shoot.
to get swype working you have to sideload the apk.
1.) download this apk: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/31821539/com.swype.android.inputmethod.apk
2.) copy to: /system/app (using something like root explorer)
3.) install the apk
4.) enjoy

Thanks a ton, brother!
no problem. swype is especially smooth with the 3.0 kernel!
It's all good. I don't think that anyone else saw my post either.
I've also been poking around, but haven't found anything yet.
I'll post here if I do.

There's a new version of wifi tether out, beta 3.1, that is showing up and allowing access for me.
Just Google wifi tether apk and it'll be the first up.
Hey , the dropbox link says that the file isn't there anymore. Did you have to remove it?
I'm using wifi tether as I write now on my droid x to connect my kindle works just fine for me I'm on the new kernel and I haven't done anything fancy so I can't say why the same wouldn't apply for you.

I don't know if the latest root method for OTA 1.47.651.1 (---==={ROOT GUIDE}===--- | 1.47.651.1 ROOT method | has been tested for Wireless Tethering. I would imagine that it doesn't make a difference... root is root, and there isn't much of anything changing on the phone AFAIK...
I've searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer.... probably because this is so new...
When WiFi is off I try wireless tethering and get an error message: Unable to start tethering, please try again. I turn on WiFi and start wireless tethering I get the same error message and WiFi turns off. I've tried this with all of the various connection types: Charge Only, HTC Sync, Disk Drive, and Internet sharing. When I try to select internet sharing, I get the following message: "Error Code 67. Registrationg failure. Your PCS Vision username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again."
I found This How-To-Guide, which references Toast's method...but I'm curious if there's a difference between that method and the one listed above for the latest OTA.
Thanks.
[EDIT]P.S. I can confirm that WiFi does work. I can connect to local WiFi networks when they are available.

Hi.. looks like you are trying to use the buid in stock (Sprint Hotspot) tethering app.. if this is the case it will not work.. you need to root your phone and once you load a rooted ROM (ex. Fresh 0.5.3 or any other one) use the wifi tether app already included in those ROMs.. sometimes you need to reinstall the wifi app . in that case uninstall the wifi tether app and go to this address on your phone and download the latest app for the Evo. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
hope this helps...
P.S. I attached the app from the address above to the post.. good luck

I figured as much. I am not using the Sprint app. I've tried the first app listed in the android market, as well as one straight from Google that's 2.0.2. It's supposed to work for the Evo... I have the same problem with both apps.
Which connection type do I need to select on my phone?

jejeje.. I did mention any other ROM as well ....
Guess the op can ignore me if he likes but what's the point of rooting if you are not going to check out various other ROMs..
if all the OP is needing is wireless teather then he should have just gone the unrevoked route.

Not going to ignore you.... not completely. I just want tethering to work so I can test it and see if it's going to work for me. Then i'll mess with other ROMs. The stock Sprint one has too much crap in it... I hate nascar...
Pezu23
I do not know if this matters but are you using a rooted ROM ? I ask because the first time I ran thw wifi tether app it ask for super user access.. maybe you need a rooted ROM flashed on the phone before this app can work.. I have no reference point since I used the toast method to root my phone..
If you can follow toast method of rooting and unlocking the NAND.. you will still have a sprint base (rooted) ROM but this time you can delete the "Nascar app" and anything else you want..
The one in market is not the best one 2.05 pre 2 I think is the best it does infrastructure mode allowing almost any device to connect

If you tried everything, i dont see why you would not take 5 more minutes to load a new rom with wifi already in it.

I have the same problem. I am on stock rooted with rooted OTA's...
I did get it working with Fresh, but I was having other problems with Fresh 0.5.3 like the camera would sporadically go out. I guess I may have to reload fresh (which I really liked, by the way)
I rooted using the link in your first post then installed the newest DC rom and now the newest baked rom. Neither allows me to wifi tether (though no errors) as I dont see a network being created. Any ideas? Did I root wrong or screw up my radios?
Thanks!
cool.. ill try that..
Maybe I'm confused...
When I run adb shell I can gain root access. However, it appears as though HTC Sense (or any other launcher) is not running as root..or at least the programs launched within Sense (i.e. astro file manager, wireless tether) are NOT running as root. I can only create dirs in /sdcard with Astro File Manager...Guess I gotta figure out how to wipe and restart.
Not to complicate your current line of thought, but I don't think normal file managers can create new files in system. only programs that request su will pop up in the su app. But the wireless tether should.
I am running basically stock with the tether and it works. But there is something to be said about trying to start over
Did you guys also loose 4g signal..And i hardly have any 3g bars to tether with...Before rooting after OTA everything worked perfect....Is 3g and 4g giving yall issues?
So this morning, i was going through tons of tethering apps and i noticed alot of them do not work properly. Even when you rooted your G2. So i came across wireless tether and it was the only app that worked correctly.
this guide is NOOB FRIENDLY !!!!!! EVEN A CAVE MAN CAN DO IT ! LOL
Heres how you get it to work,
1) root your G2 . theres a one click root app called Visionary in the market. Download and install it. Before you run it, make sure USB DEBUGING IS ON !!!
2) Start the app up and press the button that say don't root on start up.
3) Once that button is pressed, the option will change to (Run on start up) and it will have a green light under it. Do not press the button again!!!! This will always root your phone every time the phone turns off and back on. It will run by itself.
4) Download/install Astro Manager
5)Download the attachment that is posted on this thread. Just below.
6) Once downloaded, Mount your phone to the computer and then copy and paste the file(which will be named app.apk) to your memory card. Now unmount your phone
7) Open up astro manager and install the file. Which should be named APP on the memory card.
8) Once installed start the app up and it will ask for super user permission. Just press allow and then you are tethering wirelessly !!!!

What apps did you have issues with?
Here is all I did
1. Downloaded and installed VISIONary from Market
2. Downloaded and installed Barnacle from Market
3. Launched Barnacle and hit start and allowed SU permission.
4. Was tethering with my iTouch in minutes.
In the end things can be odd on different phones of the same model so options are great.
barnacle didnt work for me. It wouldnt appear on my computer on psp or ipod. it wasnt working at all.
But this method worked for me so i advise people to give it a shot

I usually just download the first apk. But i forgot one step. Open up app, Go into settings and click "access control" to enable it. Do NOT put a WEP encryption password. LEAVE YOUR CONNECTION OPEN!!! Heres why. When you connect your laptop to the wifi, your phone will get a notification saying (mac address blah blah) it will be red most likely. Click menu-then access control. The mac address of your said laptop or device is what the notification popped up. So go to access control and find your devices specific mac address and make sure the box next to it iz checked and you must click apply at the bottom. You just gave your laptop or device internet. If say your neighbor connects to your wifi, dont worry. The ONLY way they can get internet off you iz if you go to their mac address of their device, click the box, and then apply it as well. If you dont apply it, they dont get internet. So YOU control who uses your internet, not a password. Another reason why you dont want to set up a wep encryption iz because if you do, you wont be able to use wifi. Dont know why. Just happens. So try it for urself.

Ok, so my new Kindle Fire cannot see ad-hoc networks. So, using Wireless Tether I get no signal on the Fire from the E4GT.

Ok, done and installed, however I'm getting errors each time I start the tethering...
I managed to start it once without errors, but neither a black berry nor the Kindle could see it.
I uninstalled my old Wireless Tether app.
This may be a dumb question, but does the beta app need special permissions? Or does it need to be placed somewhere specifically on the sd card?
I don't think so.
I do believe you have to make sure that the SSID you create is all-lowercase and contains no special characters, and also that "Routing Fix" is enabled in the settings along with everything else.
I don't really know though, so I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
You are rooted correct? Do you have a custom rom installed?

Thanks for the tips everyone. I had to install busybox and use the Ad-hoc Switcher app - ZTO or something - and it was finally able to work!
So maw230,
What exactly did you do?
I attempted to do the same as your last post described, however ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher by HAL9000 (the program I believe you are referencing) is unable to locate the required files in their expected locations.
I already installed BusyBox (By Stericson) and had it install busybox 1.19.3 and my E4GT was rooted using ODIN.
I am going to continue searching, perhaps I can get the HotSpot Hack up and running and report back here. In the meantime, if you could verify what apps exactly allowed you to pull this off- myself and many others would be much obliged!
Thanks

Do you think you can assist me.
I've been trying to do the hotspot hack. I've rooted successfully using qbking77 video.
Next I downloaded the ek02 hotspot odexed version to root of my sd card. Using the stock recovery console, I choose to install from sd card. When I select the hotspot hack file, it just display the green android with a triangle and exclamation point and does nothing else. Then I thought maybe I have to unzip it first, but that wasn't it since it didn't see any files at all. Would like to remain stock as much as possible.
I have the latest firmware from sprint by the way if that makes any difference, ek02.

All you need to do is install a ROM that has the Hotspot hack. IMO PhantomHacker's Blazer ROM is one of the best out there and the hotspot hack comes pre-installed, so all you need to do is use the Sprint Hotspot app once the ROM is installed.
I spent way too much time trying tether apps and using the Adhoc switcher when all I need to do was open the Sprint Hotspot app!
Good luck.
I have the option checked to install non market apps, but if I download wifi tether, for instance, from the dev's website, my phone will not even let me click on "install," though I can hit "cancel." I've tried this with a free other apks, such a Swype, volume+, etc. Some allow me to hit install and some do not.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions? Btw, rooted gnex, stock 4.0.2, vzw.

I'm not. And since my original post, while my phone was laying on the couch, something changed and now I'm able to install those apks I've downloaded. Someone at AndroidForums suggested I side-load apks from my computer, but my only means of wifi is from my phone and wifi-tether was one of those apks that wouldn't install, until just an hour ago. I've had this issue rooted, unrooted, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and it seems to come and go.
It seems no one else is posting about it anywhere that I can find, so if nothing else I wanted others to know that it is happening.

I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent, mostly when it comes to being able to read, write, and search for things on the internet. I have searched these forums and others and only found two references to this question with no answers. Forgive me if my self inflated ego of being able to find answers online is misplaced.
When I try to install the Google services framework (googleservicesframework.apk) on my kindle fire I get the message "application not installed". What am I doing wrong? How do I install this? I am trying to install google apps, namely gmail. After I got the "application not installed" I did reset the device and install the gmail.apk but to no avail, the app would not even open.
I am running 6.2.2 and have recently rooted my kindle and have superuser access. I understand that root is not necessary to install google services framework but I did it nonetheless in hopes that it would help (which it has not).
I know others have had this problem, but I have not found any advice anywhere on this, please help!!! Thanks!
if you'r rooted and put the googleservicesframework.apk in /system/app then there is no need to install it (yes it will fail) - just restart the kf - you'll see it running ...
Thanks for the response! After pasting the googleservicesframework.apk to /system/app and restarting I do not see the application under "running applications", in fact I didnt even see it under "all applications". I know you said there was no need to install the app, but after I didnt see it running I tried to install it anyway then reset, it didnt help.
Its probably good to mention that ive tried this with multiple apks, ive read that there are different ones although I cant seem to tell which ones are different.
Any other advice??

Yeah, it is simple. Take your Kindle and smash it with a hammer and go by a Nook. Seriously this thing is the biggest pain in the A$$. I have got it to work only to have it shut down and not recognize the framework again. My Nook was so much easier to root and the Nexus 7 is even better, you don't have to root it.
**** Kindle and Nook to a lesser extent.
Ichigo,
The problem is when the framework is not working the Google Play Store crashes. None of my Android phones, my nook, or my nexus ever had such difficulty. The Nexus was nice because it didn't need any root.

Anyways, that would be an OS problem. You could always just install a different ROM. Besides, I was on stock and had the framework work fine. As long as you have the current version and had the permissions set to rw-r-r, it should work.

Yes, I read the spoiler.
No, I installed several different roms on both CM and TEAMWIN attempting every combination I could think of. Nothing seemed to work. Finally I gave it to my little girl as a reader and installed all the apps with APK files because I couldn't get the play store to not crash. My wife was ready to kill me I was wasting so much time with the thing. It was a free Kindle, so it wasn't that big of a deal.At least now my daughter can't go on and download any app she wants, I have control over that.

Hello,
the link you provided is not an APK file. Rather, it is a ZIP file.

The app that I use to unzip these files is androzip. Try using this to unzip the file.

This is the .apk I used on both my KF and my wife's KF. In fact I just installed it on hers last night. Hopefully it works for you.
