[Q] Advanced calling / Volte - Verizon HTC One (M9)

Issue with volte on my M9. I saw the warnings and take responsibility for my actions.
When trying simultaneous voice and data I get the "data not available while on this call" popup. I verified Adv calling is turned on and my Verizon shows it activated also.
Since I'm not sure how to deal with Verizon on S-Off, custom recovery, custom rom I thought I'd start with the clever and helpful contributors on xda.
Any tips for preparing to deal with Verizon from those of you having gone through something similar?

There have been both temporary and permanent hosings of volte. Ruu will cut to the chase and tell you right away if its ROM/app based.
I had one that had to be returned because of this. We can chat more after you ruu.

Thanks @dottat - Used your vzwM9_1.33_0PJAIMG.zip to ruu with htc_fastboot. Still not able to do voice and data simultaneously.
Just went back into recovery to wipe data/factory reset and noticed messages regarding missing bitmap oem_unlock_bg. Is that relevant? Saw somewhere that that is a toggle in developer options but cant find it

That message is normal.
If the issue stuck after ruu and you are in solid 4g service area you may need to get it swapped. Under settings-call is the video calling section greyed out permanently too?

South side of Minneapolis so I believe we have solid 4G and wife's iPhone 6 is capable of simultaneous data/voice.
Video calling is selected and grayed out.
Haven't tried toggling from My Verizon account yet.

Yours is exactly like mine was. I toggled from the account a few times. Had vzw support engineers look at multiple times and we finally gave up.
Any info you can offer up on flash history you might have? Did you browse the root directory of the phone and open some of the files etc?

Not sure when this issue started for me but I didn't think to even check it until seeing some posts from others recently.
S-Off by Java Card in mid-May and bounced around between some of the more stable and popular roms on these forums staying with those that indicate support for verizon
No Red Text aboot, and updated firmware to 2.6. No unusual failures or hangups at either or while flashing any roms.
Other than deleting some files in DCIM, Downloads, and Pictures from my Win7 PC, I have not gone exploring in the root directory and haven't knowingly changed anything there.

It possibly is just simply random. Sucks. Did you do a factory reset in stock recovery just to be sure?

Besides factory reset, if not already done, talk to Verizon Tech Suppport
and confirm that it is active. I had this same problem after activating the service,
and Tier 2 Support found that only one of the two lines was actually setup for HD Calling.

Thanks guys for helping - Never run out of thanks for the day before!
I think I will return cid to VZW__001, ruu again to confirm, factory reset from stock recovery, and toggle the adv calling setting from my verizon.
Do I have to remove all evidence of S-Off before contacting Verizon? Best to stop in a store to talk them into a new phone? Or go online for support?

I'd recommend going back to S-on before going in to ask about this. If it does get fixed one way or another, just let me know and we can meet up again to get you back to S-Off.

So I've seen things here and there about what (possibly) causes loss of Volte, but it's been scattered. Browsing or opening things on the root directory, was about the only thing that stands out... What are other ideas about what may cause the problem... Just out of curiosity

I am not shy to explore but cautious about opening or changing anything I'm not fairly sure about. Doesn't rule out a bonehead move on my part but I've been comfortable rooting about since the T-Bolt days.

Not painless but I understand VZW's process I guess. Involved 2 online chats (3 if I count one disconnected after a couple of minutes), email support efforts, and several days of texts and phone calls with tech support engineers before they determined my phone was not accessing a particular APN which allows for Advanced Calling.
Got the impression from Tech that this is uncommon but coincidentally also just yesterday received a survey from verizon pertaining to my experience with my m9. One section asked whether I experienced any of a litany of issues reported by others - short battery life, bad camera, overheating, etc...and the inability to open a web browsing session while on a phone call - my exact problem. So maybe not so uncommon?
Received replacement today, looks and feels clean and "Like New" - Charged it but haven't fired up yet.
Just finished returning my original M9 to Stock, Locked, and S-On per @dottat 's easy to follow directions - thank you.
Now to get the replacement set up and think about S-Off again --- just a little nervous about that!
*****Edit to add link*****
Useful information. (Return to locked/S-on in Post #3)

Serious BUG, i'm coming to XDA for help or guidance

My issue involves the phone not accepting incoming calls.
CLIFFS:
Roughly 1/3 calls are affected, ive tried various kernals, radios, and roms. What else can i try (short of getting a refurb)?
This has only been an issue for the last 2 or 3 weeks, for months before that i never experienced this at all.
DETAILS:
It is very sporadic but happens quite frequently.
Sometimes i will see an incoming call, hear the ringer, then when i click "Accept" it appears to be connected, but i hear dead silence. Then about 10 seconds later the call is ended. It may happen a few times in a row, and it also may not happen. I never have any issues dialing out though.
when im saying "hello? hello?" and hearing nothing ... if i hit the "End Call" button there is a split second i can hear the audio from the other party before the phone hangs up
I know the people calling me, and sometimes it is people who don't call regularly. They wouldn't play games like prank call me.
I have confirmed i am having this issue with at least these ROM's:
SkyRaider 3.2
SkyRaider 3.3
SkyRaider 3.3.1
SkyRaider 3.3.2
virtuous 2.7 + custom kernal
virtuous 2.7 + stock kernal
Have tried the following Kernals:
KK #5
Stock HTC Kernal .15
Stock HTC Kernal .17
Have tried the following radios:
2.07.00.07.16
2.15.00.07.28
2.15.00.09.01
2.05.00.06.11
Does anyone have any suggestions on what else i can try?? I am so in love with my phone, but this is hurting my business and must be resolved.
Has anyone even heard of an issue like this? I dont even know what to search for
Thank you so much if you can help.
This could be a hardware.issue if it persists across still these combinations. Just a thought. You might want to un root it then take it to verizon to ruin done diagnostics...

Is that something they do on the spot? Or do they have to take my phone away?
Also if it came down to having to have the phone replaced, are there any known ways of ensuring i receive a new unit?
Thank you.
Im really upset over this because i love my phone so much If it were a problem with BT or something else i may just ignore it, but to not be able to receive calls?? LOL
Try doing a RUU back to stock, and see if your problems are fixed after a factory reset.
Have you tried updating the PRL?

I wonder if this will have any affect
Just an update on this, since changing my PRL i have not yet had the issue happen again!!
I only received like 5 calls, but i usually always get it 1/3 typically
Ill update if anything changes, but thanks so much!!
The PRL did not work afterall.
What are my next steps? If i take my phone to VZW can they run some sort of test on the spot? or will they want to send it away?
Or should i dial 611 and make a stink until they send me a new phone?
I dont know what to do

Yep thats what its looking like
I downloaded the RUU and flashed it, but there was an error saying "Bad" and abandoned. Any idea where i can find a confirmed copy?
I then tried flashing the earliest backup i had from Recovery, it appears to be from just before i rooted.
Im going to see if i have the issue on this rom.
If i do, i will go S-On and they will see me in the store
what pisses me off most is i cant replicate it to do testing!!
Im sitting here literally calling myself over and over, to see if it connects lol
ok then, I had issues too with my network, and doing *228 was not good enough for some reason soooo do this.
Do a RUU by following the directions in this thread, and by using the file provided there.
http://www.incredibleforum.com/foru...-how-get-back-complete-stock-s-off-2-2-a.html
Then once you have gotten through the set up of your stock 2.2 incredible, Factory reset (pick the option that wipes the most data). When you turn back on your phone, it will ask you to activate it, like you just got a new phone. That has been fixing a lot of peoples weird problems lately.

So you unrooted, flashed 2.2, factory reset, then re-rooted?
Only way to get a new unit is to go in the store and freak out cuz you lost it and you need a phone NOW! They can call asurion for you and get what's called an emergency replacement or something like that. Just tell them you have buisness the next day and it's out of state. But the downside is you will get a Incredible with a SLCD screen and not your original AMOLED. But aleast it's new

Okay i fooled a lot and it hasnt happened yet (i have my toes crossed)
Here is what i did:
First, i flashed back to my very first backup right after root. So i went back to stock, but still had root.
Next i did a factory reset, wiped all data
Next i flashed SkyRaider3.3.2, newest radio, and manually reinstalled all apps and settings
so far its been 24hrs and i haven't had the issue!!
going on 4 days without an issue, thanks everyone for the help and advice

[Q] Major problem!!!

not sure where to begin, i suppose by listing my phone specs after root--
using the galaxy s2, (epic 4g touch) using kernal 2.6.35-8lostkernelexp+, build number starburst 11.13.11 v1.9.8r and running nothing but the honey theme.
i rooted the phone about a week ago and until today, everything seemed to work fine, then suddenly, i was unable to send pictures via text. not a real big issue, but i travel alot and sending pics back home by messages i a big deal for me. i thought it was just somethin with the phone, and after rebooting and rebooting to see if it would correct, it did not. however, normal text's would go through, just not any pics. i could send and receive normal words with no issues.
then just today, i totally lost internet connection--although the 3g is lit up on top, and i have 4 full bars of signal, i cannot surf, all i get is "unable to display webpage". since im at home, i turned on the wifi option and connected through the router in my house, and all worked fine-- i got online, send pic texts, etc...but when i turned wifi off, nothing.
now, back when i rooted the phone, i still kept getting the annoying "system update" messages that the phone normally does, forcing me to install whatever update the phone grabs. to prevent that, i did the steps on this site which was here--
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388778&highlight=freeze+ota
and disabled my update notifications. well, back to the beginning--now i have no internet at all and god only knows what else is wrong that i have yet to discover.
only thing i can think of at this point, is to unroot the phone , return it to the way it was and see how it goes but i dont want to do that--
any ideas?

Why not nandroid a backup of your current setup and then do a full factory reset wipe and ODIN over a stock rom and see if that fixes it...if it does then there is no reason to bring a perfectly good phone back.
Diagnostic process bro, get on it.
However if that doesn't yield any results? Might be bad hardware (which I doubt) and probably not your fault.
EDIT: You haven't changed your PRL by chance, have you? Sometimes on 11115 or 00001 I get intermittent MMS function...and a few times, legit PRL or not, my wifi/4g have just stopped working. A wipe and stock-restore took care of that every time...though that was a week or two after the phone came out and we didn't have nearly as many tools and options as we do now.
Also, are you sure that you haven't somehow disabled 3G or put it into airplane mode? As insulting as that sounds I have to ask....
...sometimes even the brightest of us forget to plug things in.
Odin restore would be the first step.
I would try ##72786# in the dialer then entering your msl. After that just just hut yes then let your phone do its thing and reboot and reactivate. Just remember to cancel it during the firmware check.

Good call...or even just trying to refresh your profile under 'updates' would be the easiest place to start...
The mms issues are likely a limitation of the ROM you are running (I haven't run Starburst in a couple of months so you'll have to ask about that in the ROM thread.) Easily resolved by using a third party app for mms if it is an important feature for you.
As far as the rest, the code provided by beejis is the reprovisioning code, also called a hands free reset and there is a bit more to the process than he stated (at least for a noob.) Hit the toolkit link in my signature and you'll find step by step instructions.
If that doesn't work, starting fresh is an incredibly simple process.
Also, posting the exact same question in two different forums is breaking a Cardinal rule, so you probably want to refrain from that, it won't win you many friends.

If you have titanium backup, go into that app then click backup/restore at the top. Find system updates and click on it to see if it's frozen, if it is defrost it. Then try my steps again. Other than that I'd try to Odin a stock ROM.

ok thanks, i went back to odin stock rom, did it from qbking77's post and the phone is back on stock...however............still no internet/data!!
i did do the ##number thing, the phone rebooted but notihng happened--i thought it was supposed to auto activate or something. so i went into settings/about phone/update profile....it scanned and after a few mins, i still get the error message "update could not be completed, if problem persists contact sprint customer support"
so im back on factory rom, but nothings changed---im where i was before--no data/internet....
before installing a different rom and such, i figure ill stop here and see what other suggestions may come about....sooooo, what next?
Take your phone in to a sprint store, an exchange may be in your future.

gee i hope not... i got the phone dec 14th, cant imagine having probs this early....
what if i did a total wipe, factory reset? i know ill loose everything on the phone, and now that its not rooted any longer, i have no way to back up anything (or at least not that i know of)
just hoping theres a better fix than a return/ factory reset
Now that you are stock, call sprint tell them your issue (only tell then internet doesn't work) and they'll do stuff on their end to trouble shoot it. Hopefully that will fix it.

I would try this. This will reset you back to exactly the way you got the phone. If you are still having problems then you will have to take it back to Sprint.

That sucks, I'd recommend taking the phone to Sprint/where you bought it, and get it replaced/fixed. Good news is you're now back on stock so they won't really look into rooting as a problem. I always put phones back to stock before I take it in for a claim.

yea, dunno...
i did call sprint per Beejis reply here just above yours. after going through a ton of crap that i did yesterday and all today, the ## number crap, they tell me there's a nationwide outage. now i find that hard to believe since both my other phones in the house, wife/kid work just fine and they have data/internet and other ppl i know have no problems....i told the tech person that it just must be my phone only cuz everyone else's seems to work.
she did give me an outage number, maybe someone on here can verify it -- 8622911 so who the heck knows. what i do know is, i sure spent a heck of alota time on here, resetting my phone, unrooting, blahh blahh just to find out there's an outage which i doubt in the first place ...
we'll see,,,,,
If you are now stock/rooted, sounds like you need to use sfhubs auto root script to go back to stock recovery (overwrite your custom recovery) unroot, and take it back to Sprint.

its just stock odin at this point, as if it came from the store.
also, still no data/internet as of this morning. dont know why sprint

but yes, looks like im headed back to the store-- i got it at best buy, have insurance and all that, but ill wait till tomorrow or something just in case this phantom outage corrects itself
by the way, where do i find this sfhubs root your talking about?
oh one other thing i discovered today also, now gps dont work either, no location, no search no nothing and it is turned on......... sigh

OMG! (Anyone???) samsung gn2 networks prob

I have a sprint samsung galaxy note 2 that is rooted and flashed to verizon running macksrom 5.0 and i started having this problem. the problem is i can call from my phone when it is not on wifi but the 3g/4g isnt showing up top in the status bar i cant access the internet unless im on wifi. when i go into settings and click on mobile networks it acts like it is going to do it then it hangs at a black screen and a box pops up and says unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped ive tried cleaning caches and fixing permissions, nothing helps, there is also another thing that pops up and says error #89 unknown error. it also says when i click on stuff, use touchwiz or xperia to perform this action. Always or just once.) I bought this samsung gn 2 online everything was already done to it. I think whoever installed the macks rom must have left the the touchwiz on it. Because it keeps asking me when i do things, perform action using touchwiz or xperia I also noticed that i have goomanager on it. Can i use the goomanager to reflash this phone? If so can someone give me information on how to properly do it. i also read something about mobile odin. Which one would be the easiest to use?
You have too much going on there. I would relash the rom. Make sure you wipe system, casche and devick; may want to do old school and wipe three times.
Goo Manager is probably suppose to be there, by design from the ROM developer. That should have been in the OP on the ROM three, along with known issues.

Doesn't verizon run a slightly different hardware version from sprint? Are you trying to connect to the verizon or the sprint network? If verizon, there are two possibilities. 1 - hardware, the sprint phone just doesn't like the verizon signal. (unlikely) 2. - ROM, is the ROM the sprint version or the verizon version? if it's the sprint version I would say that framework differences are causin the issue and would reflash the correct version for your carrier (or the correct port - the hardware differences I mentioned earlier)
Have you called customer service about getting your phone set up on their network? About getting the IMEI number registered in their database?
In other words what have you already tried with this used phone in order to get it set up on your provider's network?

it was originaly a sprint phone that was rooted and flashed to verizon. ive been using it for months on the verizon network and have had zero problems until about five days ago. i dont know if the rom is sprint or verizon. how do i tell? i would reflash it if i knew what i am doing. i am a complete uber noob. im just hoping someone will give me directions how to reflash it. i dont care what rom i just want it to work again on the verizon network. i want to be able to use it to go geocaching with my sons. just got it all set up ready to go caching with em and the very next day it decided to go mental on me.
I would check out the thread on taking the Sprint GN2 to TMobile, Verizon, Boost, and Ting. I think it's in the question and trouble shooting subforum.

I don't know personally, but I believe so. You'll have to read and ask in that thread. Those are people who may have done the switch and can give better advise from experience.

Apparently Big Red knows when you're rooted.

Talking to Verizon support today trying to figure out why Advanced Calling wasn't working, and they straight up said that it appeared that I was rooted. I feigned ignorance, but I thought it was very odd that they knew this.

The My Verizon Mobile is the one that tells them. If you deny it root when it asks, it knows you have root. If you didn't have root I think there would be no reply to it's asking for root.
Ah, is that why my advanced calling isn't working? Annoying.
I need to call them for my Advanced Calling as well (as it's complete horse s**t that I need to enable that so my phone doesn't drop from 4G to 1X) but I've never been prompted by My Verizon about root access...
There's a system property you can find with "getprop" called "vzw.os.rooted". I tried changing it in build.prop, but it didn't work. There's also a partition called persistent with a file /persistent/rct.cfg detailing some not allowed system behavior. There are things that detect root since it's pretty noticable and readable to everything at /system/xbin/su. An app that communicates to the internet could easily transmit that information. This is one of the many reasons I have a firewall (AFWall+). I installed it pretty soon after I got root, but one of the many vzw bloatware apps probably got the info out. Guess what, I don't give a s***.
FWIW, I had a lot of difficulty trying to activate Advanced Calling on software 610B. I worked with Tech Support for a week, no luck.
I finally updated to 611A as a last resort, and it suddenly worked. So if you're having trouble getting AC enabled, and you're on 610B, you may need to update your software version.

Isn't 11A the upgraded version of 11B? I know it sounds backwards, but we had to KDZ that to root phone.
Before I rooted my advanced calling worked. After root when I make calls it drops to 1x. Don't really care as I don't browse the internet on my phone while on a call (99% of the time).
Still, it's pretty dumb of Verizon. Then again they do more than their fair share of dumb corporate related ****.
Mine works and I'm rooted with no firewall or protection to block them knowing.

AFAIK, there is no 11B.
Just 610B (original, what shipped on my G4), and 611A (OTA update, which I needed to use in order to properly activate AC).
I am not rooted.
Advanced Calling also works fine for me on rooted 11A. However, I recently disabled it because ACR will not record calls with it turned on.

This is the same problem I'm having. I had to KDZ to 11A when I rooted, and I haven't been able to get it to work since.

For those of us who haven't fully been following the root discussions, what does that mean, that you KDZ'd to 11A? You had 610B, you used KDZ to put on a 611A image (not taking the OTA to 611A, so you kept the 610B bootloader), then rooted that?
Did AC work before root, presumably on 610B?
After what I went through to finally get AC working, I would really hate for root to break that

AC worked perfectly for me on 10B, and after I rooted (KDZing to 11A) it will no longer activate. I tried toubleshooting with VZW, and none of the things they did on their end fixed it. The only suggestion they had was factory resetting, but I haven't tried that yet.
I'm sorry to hear that.
There seems to be some mysterious magic to Verizon's Advanced Calling. In the span of a week, after a bunch of work on their end, Verizon was unable to fix mine, they resorted to telling me to exchange the phone. I had already done a factory reset, at their suggestion, which did not change anything. Then after the OTA to 611A, it suddenly worked, and it seemed this was a surprise to them, as well as to me.
Having issues with AC after rooting would seem worse, they could potentially blame any issues on root.
Why problems with AC can't be figured out, and then fixed, is kind of disconcerting. I guess maybe there's a reason the phone calls it Advanced Calling 1.0.
AC was working for me also and then it stopped. I was already on 11a before rooting. If you have the verizon app called name and id on your phone ac will not work. Once I froze that app in tibu it went back to working. I'm not for certain but I don't think that app was on my phone before root so it may have been included in the rooted img file.

So you froze Caller Name ID? The icon is a phone with ID in the upper right?

Yeah that's the one. Once I froze it ac started working again. There is a thread on Verizon's website that says that app is not compatible with ac also.

What else do you have frozen? I have that frozen too, and it's still the same.
I'm not rooted (maybe that's the difference), but I noticed today that I have Caller Name ID on my phone. And last time I tried it, AC was working. Just FWIW.

[REWARD] PLEASE HELP! Phone will not dial out.

I have a weird situation. I bought a M9 (used). It activated fine and data and texting works perfect, but outgoing calls aren't working at all. The dialer just hangs. The Sprint Corporate store couldn't figure out the problem either. I've reprovisioned, updated the PRL, and did a factory reset multiple times.
What's going on?
BTW I know you all help out of kindness, but I'll reward anyone who successfully figures this out for w/ $20.00 via PayPal if they willingly accept it.
Is this phone s-off, unlocked, rooted? What happens when someone calls you? Under Settings - Call, what does it say for Preferred Network?

The phone isn't s-off or rooted (the bootloader is also still locked). I'm not sure how to check whether it's unlocked. Inbound calls seem to work fine.

Boot into recovery or fastboot (not sure), and you will see the bootloader status. Relocked means that it was unlocked before. You can also see s off status here.

The top of the bootloader says ***LOCKED***
One odd thing to note is that everything (including outgoing calls) work when Wi-Fi calling is active.
Have you tried using a third party dialer app such as ExDialer from the market? If that works for outgoing calls, then at least you can rule out a hardware issue. You need to try to flash an RUU. The problem is, im sure the phone is already updated past the point of available ruu's. What software/build number is the phone on? You are probably going to have to find someone with a java card or xtc2 clip and get the phone s-off and unlocked. From there you can flash an older ruu (downgrade) and hopefully that fixes your issue. Other than that, with security on there isnt really anything you can do you havent already tried.

That's a good idea, but I just tried ExDialer and it hangs on the exact same spot where it says "DIALING..." then says the call was lost. I'm at the most recently available RUU, but Marshmallow is on it's way for us any minute now. I'll investigate getting S-OFF.
You would think the verizon corporate store wouId have access to all the ruus, and would have tried reflashing it. I got s-off with a xtc2 clip. I met a guy from the java card thread who had one and lived fairley close. He did it for a small donation, it takes only minutes.

I did have it active on the account, but I turned it off and had Sprint remove the [soc] tag from the line.

Your phone is defective, Tell HTC (uh-oh protection) or Sprint to give you another phone.

I think you're right -- but I still wished I knew what the &%$# is actually the culprit. Even though I bought the phone second hand, HTC is to be willing to honor the warranty. At least my luck isn't that horrible.
