Oh hello. I'm absolutely new to the forums because I decided to register so I can ask some questions about the Iconia A100 because I need them answered because I want to get the tablet soon.
Soo, here we go. About the screen size and resolution; I never had any Android device so it might sound stupid but... if you try to run an application or a game or whatever that's been made for lower resolution than the tablet's, will it run in a smaller "window" or something, or just won't run at all? The same goes with applications made for 1.x or 2.x version of Android - will they launch on A100's Honeycomb?
I also worry about the battery a bit - not about the battery's life because that seems just fine for me, but what happens if the battery breaks? You can't really replace it at home without breaking the warranty (I suppose you cannot open it) so will they replace it at some authorized-service-or-something? Or do you need to get the whole tablet replaced? I'm probably over-worrying this a bit because none of my phone batteries ever broke but still... Hehe.
Oh and I also wanted to ask about Gorilla Glass... Is it featured on the A100? On their website it says it is, I just want to get it verified by someone who owns it.

I kept the A100 for a while before returning it but I'll share what I know about what you ask.
I'm not a gamer per se. Angry Birds is about all I've found interest for. But if an app is designed for lower resolutions often you will see FCs or other odd behaviour. Try to select compatible games for HC 3.2 and you should be fine. If a favorite game is FC'ing on you...drop a note to the developer. Oftentimes you can get great insights that way.
The battery is non-replaceable meaning if it ever pooped out on you, your only recourse would be RMA.
Yes, Gorilla Glass is a feature. But, know this. Gorilla Glass is "scratch-resistant" and not "scratch-proof". Huge difference. If you keep it, cover it would be my suggestion.
The A00 is a nice little tab. Well built but not real flexible. If you can swing a bit more $$ there are much better options out there.

FC is short for Force Close. If an app quits responding, it is Android's way of killing it. Most times it will give you the option to Force Close an unresponsive app or wait for it to respond. Other times, it just closes it on its own.

No problem! Ask away. Two things. Questions are what this forum is for and two, we were ALL new at one time!
FC - Force Close. Android-speak for crashed! (Yours seems more positive though!)
Be happy to share what I think on recommendations but the bottom line is what YOU like and does what YOU want and, last but not least, what YOU can afford. If a tablet you have seems fine to you...keep it. Everyone has different needs/wants and therefore goals. List your priorities in a tab then jump on it.
My opinions on available 7" tabs I've tried:
A100: nice overall tablet. Good build just "feels" good in hand. Slippery back though. Screen viewing angles are really not good (looking at screen from the sides). Straight on the screen is acceptable. Battery life is weak. Depending on use it's highly doubtful one would get a full day on a single charge. Not many accessories available. There are rumors Acer may be getting out of making tablets. Not good as support would wither out. And that would mean no OS upgrades. Small dev support. (Not many on Xda own the darned thing). Buying something that is EOL (End Of Life) can be good but seldom is. There is the ability to root the A100 but no verifiable Recovery yet. And rooting voids one's warranty so a fail-safe Recovery is VITAL. The measly 8GB internal storage is mitigated by the uSD (micro SD) availability.
Amazon Kindle: Not a real tablet computer really. An e-reader that runs android which is fine but not really the same "animal" as a full on android tablet. Same with Nook Tablet. Nice units for reading/movies though. But locked into Amazon/Barnes and Noble content.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus: best 7" tablet available today bar none. Downsides are price. It's spend-y at $399 but you get what you pay for. Accessories are few but in the pipeline I am told. Best/fastest processor on the 7" tab out there. Screen isn't IPS but viewing angles and much better than the A100. Charger port can covert to a USB host. Both root and recovery are available but recovery is still being tested AFAIK.
Samsung has a 8.9 screen tab out if the 10.1" screen is too large for you. It has some drawbacks and the biggest IMHO is no uSD. There is a 7.7" tab from Samsung coming that is said to be freakin' amazing but no word on when or if it will be released in the US.

That would be bad. However, I read there will be ICS update for the A100 in 2012 so I don't know.

$399? It's impossible to buy it here (Czech republic) for that price. Even A100 costs $340 here, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus wasn't even released here yet and it will cost $700 at launch. Yes, 700 bucks.
You kinda scared me with the Acer-will-stop-producing-tablets thing (I know it's a rumour, but I'm paranoid as hell ). I'd love to invest into a Samsung tablet and be sure there will be lots of official support for it, but it's way too over-priced here (and that goes with everything in Europe).
Acer is not getting out of the tablet game. They have already announced the A200. The A100 and A500 will get Android 4.0 the latest version of Android in Janurary.

$700? Jeez. Actually the $340 for the A100 is about what I paid here when I first got it to try out. That sort of pricing seems to explain why so many from Europe purchase devices when on holiday here to take back.
Glad ihavecrayons found the source on Acer. I'm sure some manufacturers will stop producing tabs as the market floods with devices. The A100 (barring the irritants to some people) is a fine little tab really. Once a verifiable/reproducible Recovery is developed it will lend itself to serious modding! Now hopefully there will be increasing love for the device on Xda.

So my last phone was a iPhone 3GS (16GB) that I used from October 2009 - April 2012. The phone did darn well and I've never had a phone that I've used that long, but again I never had a phone that expensive either before the 3GS. So iOS got damn boring, the phone got sluggish and there was something wrong with the sim card tray and the wifi hence I decided to pick up an Android phone which happens to be the HOX.
I've created this thread just to share my opinion on how its going on for me so far, how different it is using Android and the HOX. Keep in mind I am comparing a roughly 3 year old phone with the latest iOS to the HOX.
Honestly there isn't much I miss from iOS, maybe the ability to add more than 10 alarms(out of the box not talking about other apps), but thats all I can think of really. Maybe installous for you know what..
Android is just better than iOS in loads of ways, I'll list a few that strike me now and a few things I miss:
1)Setting a Custom Ringtone
This is a total pain in the ass in iOS. I would rather jailbreak my phone and get ringtones from cydia than make the mp3 I have a ringtone and connect a cable to phone and convert that cut mp3 to a ringtone file. Nonsense.
On the HOX I was able to trim a mp3 I had and make it a ringtone right off the phone, so convenient that is.
2)iTunes
I hate iTunes. I hate making my PC connect to my phone via iTunes and the whole sync bs that I've to go through. I like being able to copy paste songs, images and whatever I have than do all the crap required for an iPhone. I would use iTunes as a music player for my PC but thats about it, I hated dealing with it for my iPhone.
I know lots of people who "can't live" without iTunes, but I aint one of them. The best feature I like about iTunes is probably you installing a iTunes remote app to your iPhone and controlling your PC music off your phone via wifi, thats the best thing maybe.
Android is weird in a way though, I don't know if its now or it has always been this way but getting apps to your phone only via wifi? What if you don't have wifi? Play Store doesn't give me an option to download the app to my computer. iTunes and App store is better that way maybe.
3)Contacts
iCloud or whatever its called came to the iOS much much later than Android had their Google Contacts. Thats just too convenient. Besides who doesn't have a gmail account these days? And all you have to do to get your settings and contacts back is add your google account. Thats just too convenient. Android is a pure winner that way imo.
One thing I hate though is the really crap quality photos that get synced to Google Contacts and sometimes how Contacts isn't smart enough to link contacts properly.
Eg:I have [email protected] in my Gmail and Abc from my contacts. It will show up as [email protected] instead of Abc
4)Play Store
I mentioned not liking the fact I can't get an app on my pc and then transfer it to my phone, but one thing that I like about the play store is being able to start/queue app downloads on my phone without even touching it.
5)Lockscreen
Lockscreen for Android is just more productive. iOS added that camera shortcut recently. I think its sense, but its damn cool to be able to access any four apps I want directly from the lockscreen.
6)Alarms
I need loads of alarms to wake up, and iOS allowed me to put a lot of them. I used to have 30-40 a day. Sense/Android does not allow more than 10 out of the box.
7)Widgets
Its nice to have widgets rather than a whole bunch of apps to scroll through.
8)Music
I could access iPod or music in iOS just by double tapping the home-screen button twice. There's no such thing possible on the HOX.
9)Airplane Mode
Switching to Airplane mode was faster on iOS than Android. But thats something I can live with xD.
10)Hotspot
Creating a hotspot was easy for iPhone 4 or 4S but wasn't possible on the 3GS unless you got an app from cydia called myWI. Thats just ridiculous imo. Setting a iOS restraint on a older device.
11)Keyboard
Even though the screen of the HOX is huge compared to the 3GS, the iOS keyboard has a bigger spacebar to tap on. With the stock keyboard on the HOX I kept missing space and hitting '.'.
But then again Android you can choose amongst so many keyboards without any hassle. I used swiftkey and now I'm using swype, both are awesome imo.
12)Customization
There’s lots of customization possible on Android, with or without rooting.
Things I miss about the 3GS:
1)Silent Button
This was just awesome imo, every "phone" should have this.
2)Battery
It did give me much more battery life than the HOX smaller screen or not.
3)Top-notch Hardware?
I used, fiddled and played with the Silent button on the iPhone a lot for around 800 days and it was still perfect. The lock button was good too.
The home button wasn't responsive after a year or so but still very usable towards the end. The sim card tray was cheap and messed up towards the end.
But I dropped it a LOT of times and even in small puddles of water I remember and it survived all that.
The HOX on the other hand, has this weird buzz/noise after a haptic feedback response. There's a rattling sound if I shake the phone. One corner near the capacitative panel was creaking in the beginning, seems fixed or maybe I don't notice it anymore. I dropped the HOX once and there's this tiny crack in the corner. I really hope it lasts me at least 2 years.
4)Heating or rather Cooling
I played a lot of games on my iPhone, it did get a little heated after gaming for 30 minutes straight or so but thats it.
HOX gets so heated after using a browser on 2G for 20 minutes? Also gets heated while gaming. Gets heated so much that it doesn't charge, thats just a complete annoyance to me.
Besides I have to choose between charging my phone and using my phone, thats damn stupid. I've read that the 2.05 leak fixes this, I'm on ARHD 7.1.0 which is based on the leak and I've still faced the heating problems.
I know its packing a quad-core in such a slim device there isn't much space for cooling but then again if heating problems like those are to be faced then this chip Tegra3 doesn't belong in a phone.
5)Speaker
The speaker on the 3GS was placed at the bottom edge whereas the One X has it’s speaker placed at the back which is quite easy to block. The speaker placement and quality of the 3GS was undoubtedly better.
6)Charging Speed
3GS charged faster than the HOX. I’ve read the 2.05 base it charges faster, have yet to see that.
7)Software Support from Manufacturer
3GS is probably the only iPhone that will get 3 updates it came with 3 and got updates to 4 and 5 and is getting a update to 6 too. I doubt I’ll see that much from HTC.
What I like about the HOX:
It would have been easy to figure from my above statements that I like Android better than iOS, now its time to list a few things that I like about the HOX.
1)Camera
I love the Camera on this thing, I’m not a pro photographer or anything but the camera on this is really awesome. And it has a flash, my 3GS didn’t have a flash but my phones before the 3GS did so that was pretty odd.
2)The Screen
The Screen is just gorgeous on this. Its a pleasure to watch videos or look at pictures or use the internet. Most impressive.
3)Body
I like the matte body of the HOX and how solid it feels. The only gripe regarding the body would be the protruding camera lens that is easy to scratch. I haven’t put on a screen protector yet as I’ve read most of them don’t cover the screen completely because of the curved edges.
4)micro-USB port
This is a really really handy thing because not everyone I hang out with will have a iPhone charger, but most of the phones have a micro-USB port so theres a good change of finding that at a friend or relative’s place.
5)Quad-Core Fast
I love the speed of the HOX, I doubt I will ever feel it becoming sluggish. I plan to underclock/undervolt it to get more battery life once I figure out how.
6)32GB
26GB but yea, its a huge plus to have that much data storage.
7)Dev and Community Support
It feels really really good to have so much support from this awesome xda community and developers. One of the really good parts of getting this phone is the awesome support and multitude of custom roms, tweaks and mods available.
8)THD Games
I’m not a fan of games on touch screen phones anymore unless its an arcade game, but THD powered games are a plus no doubt, just doesn’t matter to me.
Things I wish are fixed with the HOX would be heating problems and better battery life. I’m going to try undervolting to get more battery life once I figure out how. But thats it. I’ve been taking good care of the phone, have ordered a Rock TPU case for it.

With regards to updates, Apple have produced 5 phones in 5 years, it's easier for them to produce updates for longer. I think HTC are going to be producing fewer phones now, maybe that will help.
You'll find the community here will create updates for a while, I think the One X is going to have a large, active community for quite some time.
Personally I don't have the overheating problems that some do, been using the phone for an hour and it's barely warmer than the back of my hand.

You can add a widget (there a several of them supplied by HTC which are just buttons essentially) which will allow to switch flight mode with one button press. There is also a profile button which will lot you switch to silent or vibrate mode easily as well.

Hey Phil,
I know about those widgets, I'm using them. Still switching to Airplane mode is slower i.e the time it takes for all connections to go off is slower vs airplane mode on iOS (or atleast what iOS shows)
And regarding the widget for silent mode, I'm using that too . Just nothing beats a hardware button to put your phone on silent mode.

We can using the volume keys I know it's not the same but technically near enough, it is good though I've got the same button on the iPad and although useless for that device pretty cool you can switch quickly.
But plenty of widgets available to achieve the desired result.
Good write up on both OS's. Both have their pros and cons and it's good to see no fanboy bashing of either device.

Just picking up on your comment regarding Google compressing image backups.
I recommend getting dropbox that will automatically backup your photos without any compression or alteration whatsoever.

You can customise till you drop on Android devices. For example with a custom rom like viperX, you can customise the buttons for example long press home and you can assign an action or even launch an app, or just use apex launcher or nova launcher no root needed for these and you can apply gestures, so swiping up can open the music app. I find these gestures very useful for my commonly used actions, I've got swipe down to show me battery, swipe up to open my music, etc and you can even put gestures on the dock icons.
That will give you back some functionality you had with the double tap home button on iOS.

I think if a person is kind of more than an casual user - want to study how to root, install custom staff..., would love android more. If he just picks a phone from store, then use it, better to take iphone

I'll try to get some gestures running soon, there was a similar thing on iOS after JBing it, called Activator. My Android Journey has just begun haha xD

i always have trouble with iOS people and that is they fail to see the bright side and just nag about the lack or imperfections of the things they loved the most on iOS
and i tell them if you want it exactly like iOS why did u even switch..
There is a reason behind not being able to download an app to your pc and then sync it to your phone. The compatibility filtering is done by the play store, so if you have one phone with hw keyboard and one without hw keyboard you'll be able to install an app which requires hw keyboard (or specific screen size, or whatever) on both phones regardless of their compatibility. If you have filtering on the pc, then you'll have to have an Android iTunes equivalent and noone wants that, right ?

Well the main problem with most 'iOS people' lol xD is that they're the type to believe that Apple cannot make a mistake whatsoever and "It is the best". Wrong that attitude is. Its not only iPhones, its these Apple Fanboys in general. There are these rich pricks who who'll go get a 15" MacBook Pro to do what? Surf the web, make word docs and ppts max.
On the other hand if a person into video/graphics editing comes and asks me if an MBP is good, I give them a go ahead because of the kickass softwares that OSX has for them such as FCP etc.
Coming back to iDevices, 4S was horrible upgrade. Old design with a new camera, processor and a beta voice assistant, no thanks.
They're running out of innovations imo. They shoved a retina display for their new iPad and even the MacBooks. Wtf really? I had no problem whatsoever with the iPad 2 display(used a friends iPad 2 quite a bit). It was gorgeous imo, they didn't need to make it retina. Same goes for the MBP, didn't have a problem with that display either. Maybe its the lack of Steve Jobs but Apple has failed to impress me lately. iOS6 doesn't seem that great to me.
HTC really upped them by coming out with this beautiful design that is the One x . They should have put prettier packaging though xP

I'll tell you why I'm stressing on this. I wanted to download this game which was around 500mb in size and I didn't have wifi then, all I had was a 2G plan on my phone and access to internet via ethernet. Downloading off 2G would have taken ages and 3G consumption would have set me back by quite some money. It made sense to get the .apk from the comp and then transfer it but I couldn't.
You could have always used internet pass through?

No app will ever be 500 MB What you need to do is download that app (around 10-15 MB) and it will download data that goes into SDcard. You can download that data from PC too if you know what to search

Well the main problem with most 'iOS people' lol xD is that they're the type to believe that Apple cannot make a mistake whatsoever and "It is the best". Wrong that attitude is. Its not only iPhones, its these Apple Fanboys in general. There are these rich pricks who who'll go get a 15" MacBook Pro to do what? Surf the web, make word docs and ppts max.
On the other hand if a person into video/graphics editing comes and asks me if an MBP is good, I give them a go ahead because of the kickass softwares that OSX has for them such as FCP etc.
Coming back to iDevices, 4S was horrible upgrade. Old design with a new camera, processor and a beta voice assistant, no thanks.
They're running out of innovations imo. They shoved a retina display for their new iPad and even the MacBooks. Wtf really? I had no problem whatsoever with the iPad 2 display(used a friends iPad 2 quite a bit). It was gorgeous imo, they didn't need to make it retina. Same goes for the MBP, didn't have a problem with that display either. Maybe its the lack of Steve Jobs but Apple has failed to impress me lately. iOS6 doesn't seem that great to me.
HTC really upped them by coming out with this beautiful design that is the One x . They should have put prettier packaging though xP

no im a fan of all this retina push but not in the case where they fail to produce the same ipad2 game graphics on ipad3 due to the massive amount of pixels, like one reviewer said if this happens in ps/xbox land where the new machine fails to run the game of the previous gen in the same quality, it would be a disaster

It boggles my mind to think there has been no xperia play current. What stops other manufacturers (eg. samsung?) from making a similar phone? Is there a patent issue? license problem? there is a market for it, and technology is there.

Yes. The design is good, but I read from another forum that this device has showed many problems. I quote the user here:

That would be me!! lol. Amazon made me an offer I couldn't refuse -$159- I got the free year of prime- I paid for it last year by accident and ended up getting a lot of use out of it, so this made it easy. And the phone was $60 (after putting $99 towards prime), and I opened an amazon CC which gave me $40 in an instant credit- so this phone was $20 in the end!! plus taxes of course.
Before I pulled the trigger I looked to XDA to see where development was for this phone- and it looks like it is picking up and starting to move- so I will be getting this new fire phone tomorrow!!! I have to confess I have been using an iphone 5s (JB of course!) for the last year and a half and have been missing the challenge of rooting, romming, and making the best out of the hardware that is lacking due to poor software.
My plan is to put on the latest update and add google play market- leave it unrooted for now and see how it goes. But I am keeping my eye on beta CM11 and seeing how far it goes with CM 13 possibly in the future!!

Why was I interested in this Fire Phone??? I bought a kindle 7 hdx last year and hacked that to run google market and it turned out to be a pretty great tablet that I also got a great deal on. It has the fire OS running along side google market with a great launcher running to swap back and forth. So kindle, instant videos, amazon music, and all the google apps too. It's specs were very close to the ipad mini and was a third of the cost. I gave it to my daughter to use in NYC running on att and she has had no complaints with how I modded it. And she is not very techy! :silly:
I am getting a little bored with my 5s and wanted a bigger screen- I passed on the 6+ since we are no longer getting subsidies and $850 for a phone seems ridiculous!! I don't know if 0.7 inches will make much of a difference, but for $20, I just had to find out
I have a Fire Stick TV also and I want to see how they work together. Very excited to receive this phone tomorrow.

Great phone for the money. If throw yourself into the Amazon ecosystem the fire OS works quite well but I think only Jeff Bezos has done that so far. I'm using it with a custom launcher at the moment but when cm11 is final I might adopt it.

Since you asked:
The hardware is incredible for the price. The antutu benchmark puts it slightly faster than a galaxy s5. However, the bells and whistles (extra cameras, 3D, etc) are irrelevant at best. -- The os is terrible. It works well enough but is far behind other smart phones' os. Also, Amazon's wish to completely control your "experience" gets in the way of good hardware. If you root and then add gapps and the google now launcher, the phone is better to use, but still feels wrong, especially when certain apps can only be added through amazon's app store. -- Finally, I'm still irked by the locked bootloader. It was at this stage I put it in the drawer to use as an emergency backup - or maybe a "mini-gamer" for kids.
Then came ggow and his work to bring CM11 to the phone. Thanks to him, I now use it as my daily driver. I have added Xposed Framework with a few modules, all my favorite apps, and the phone is great! The only annoyance is that there are very infrequent random google play services stops which quickly correct themselves leaving a msg that needs to be swiped away. This is no big deal and ggow might have this fixed by the time you read this. Ggow also mentioned bypassing lollipop (CM12) and looking to "M" for his next major upgrade. How this will happen with a locked bootloader I don't know, but all praise to the person who brought my firephone backed to life.

I bought the Fire Phone 6 months ago (I think, don't remember), when it was $189 (and a year of Prime). Having a phone with those specs at $90 was a great deal and hard to refuse. Bought it, got it, and the first day of using it I was amused with how different it was from stock Android. I had a Nexus 5, which got stolen, and I wandered with a low-end phone until I bought the Fire Phone. The Fire Phone couldn't be more different from the Nexus 5, software-wise. I saw the lock screen, toyed with it and thought: "Wow, it moves depending on where I look it from, nice!" (my first lock screen was the one with the time made from the stars and the moon with below it) but also "Did Amazon really need 4 cameras just for that? It might drain my battery" and "Which real-world use could I give to this feature?"
Yes, it was nice to see how things moved thanks to the Dynamic Perspective feature, at least at first; then, like all novelties, my attention to it faded and eventually I disabled it. Having my battery drained wasn't worth for a feature I wasn't paying attention to and which the only real-world use I could think of was showing it to some friend to surprise them a for a little time. And because this phone doesn't have a removable battery, I couldn't afford to lose it for some gimmicky feature.
Then I saw the Carousel, which is the home screen where the most recent apps are shown, with the notifications below it. They were affected by the Dynamic Perspective too. I hated that dotted pattern they used for the Carousel, and then I tried to change it for, say, whatever picture this phone could've come with.
I went to Settings, and was surprised to see, first, that that annoying dotted pattern was there too, and then that there wasn't a way to change the wallpaper. I thought "Come on, it's 2015, every OS in the friggin' world has a way to change the wallpaper. It's the most basic form of customization. Even Apple (which I don't hate), with all that walled garden feeling, allows you to change the wallpaper." But Amazon's FireOS didn't (I haven't ever seen a Kindle Fire tablet). My phone shipped with version 3.6.8, and we had to wait until May to see such a basic feature with the upgrade to 4.6.1. I got annoyed by that, but there was nothing I could to about it.
I checked the pre-loaded games, which make heavy use of the same Dynamic Perspective. I half-liked the Planet Blocks game and played it for a while. After that, I forgot I had it and remained hidden.
Then I went to the Appstore to see what was new. I knew the Appstore didn't have any Google app, and understood it. Amazon had an equivalent to every Google app and, even though I didn't like how they looked, they got the job done, and that was what mattered. Downloading and installing was what I was used to, and updating was a breeze.
But I guess I missed some apps that weren't on the Appstore and was lazy to not sideload all of them. I needed to see good ol' Google on this phone, so I went to XDA and checked if there was a way to sideload Google Play Services. After all, underneath all the Amazon skin and no traces of Google, FireOS was Android at the heart (3.6.8 was based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which was pretty outdated even then). There was a way to install Google Play Services, and there was a way to root the phone too, but only if you were brave (and foolish) enough to downgrade to 3.5.1 (it was a bad idea, because if you did that, there would be problems with the Amazon account registration and also some nasty overheating issue). So, I stayed with just installing Google Play Services. It went smoothly and finally got Google. With the Play Store I'd be able to download and install SwiftKey and maybe Google Now Launcher or Nova Launcher.
I got no luck with SwiftKey. It installed, but then you couldn't use it unless you activated it via ADB. After that, got SwiftKey. And about launchers, they worked, except for widgets (which weren't supported in FireOS) and the wallpaper (there was a way to change the wallpaper in Nova; you could choose the image, but it never worked; you had to like the black background because it was the only option). I checked other launchers, some supported widgets (not all widgets, but some) and some found a way to change the wallpaper. I stuck with Buzz Launcher, which made the phone look and work most similar to Android.
I hoped Amazon would sometime hear what users here at XDA (and everywhere else) had to say. The Fire Phone was a great piece of hardware, but its software was a bummer. People were trying to google it but all you could do was sideload Google Play Services. The bootloader was locked (and still is), and the Towelroot method for rooting didn't work for 3.6.8, so downgrading was the next stage for googling up the device. I remember seeing some guys here at XDA offering some money to the first person to unlock the bootloader, and some people sending a letter to Jeff Bezos himself to unlock it and then also a Change.org petition, taking the example of the HP TouchPad tablet (it saw new life after HP unlocked its bootloader, after which people flashed Android instead of the built-in webOS, becoming the second-most selling tablet of 2011). It never happened.
Then it was the question if the phone would ever receive a FireOS 4 update (based on Android 4.4 KitKat), given its lackluster sales. It finally happened on May, and came with very necessary changes to help customize the phone.
This new version would eventually be rooted via Kingroot, which is a very shady-looking app for rooting. It worked, and then there was a way to change it for SuperSU, a more reliable root app. With all the long wait, knowing a developer found a way to flash a ROM even with the locked bootloader was a relief. I flashed it as fast as I could. Now I'm using Cyanogenmod 11 and it's great (no trace of Amazon). It's still beta (the developer uploaded the first build just 4 days ago), but it works pretty well right now, and it'll only get better.
Now we can use a phone that has a great price and good specs with a great OS to match. To the people out there wondering if the phone is worth the price (right now it went back to $449 and comes with a year of Amazon Prime, with $99 alone, so the phone's real price is $350), no, it's not, you could get a OnePlus One at that price (which comes with Cyanogen OS), or a Moto X, or a Xiaomi Mi4, or many other great phones below $350 (and then if, and only if, you want Amazon Prime you can subscribe). When it gets a big discount, which happens from time to time (last one was this week and the price went down to $159), it gets more attractive (especially if you were going to subscribe to Amazon Prime). The phone has many gimmicky features which are really useless, uses an OS that is difficult to adapt to, and is overpriced most of the time (no wonder Amazon failed to sell it at launch at $199 with AT&T contact, or later at $649 unlocked, or now at $449), but may be a great deal when bought at discount (this week the real price of the phone was $60, and at that price you cannot get any smartphone off-contract) and if you're willing to tinker with the phone and flash a ROM (Cyanogenmod 11 is the only one right now, but might be more in the future), it makes a pretty good phone.
A quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, with Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera and 2.1MP front camera, 1080p recording, 32GB of built-in storage and now the ability to flash Cyanogenmod 11 for just $60? I'd buy it.

Got my Fire phone!!
I really like the screen- overall size of the phone is not really bigger than my 5s but the screen real estate is a little bigger. It's not so lite that you will drop it or so thin you will drop it either. When I use my 5s bare, I have a hard time hanging onto it. It's in a wallet case that I can get a good grab onto. I like a little heft to it and it does feel good in your hand.
I have the incipio folio case on this fire phone that I got for $10 from ATT online store. That was a really good deal. Also did a screen saver just because I like them and the protection from minute scratches they provide.
So, on my Amazon account it was registered to me and the free prime was added on. When I went to set up the phone it requires you to register again to your account and I got all errors that it couldn't be done at this time, blah blah blah. I researched it and apparently this was a big problem at launch too.
So I updated it to the latest of 4.6.1 (820) and tried again, same deal. It just wouldn't register. So I de-registered it on my computer, and tried again on the phone, no go. You can't use the phone without it being asso. with an amazon acct- no apps at all are usable, even the preinstalled ones. So I chatted online, they couldn't help me and wanted to have their Fire Team support call me back- but I couldn't at that time so I will deal with it tomorrow. I'll have to search this forum and see if there's any info about it.
In the meantime I got the google apps working so now I at least have a pretty good list of apps, but no amazon services working yet. I still have to add a sim card and check the basic call functions- since it is a phone.
The benefit of picking up a phone that is a year old is you guys have already tackled the tough parts of rooting, modding, roms, etc. I checked out this forum before purchasing and was pleasantly surprised that you just made the break through just this week for CM. I may have to check that out! I have the att Mega and that poor orphan phone is so crippled most guys just walked away. I Love it for it's 6 inch screen size. The iphone 6+ was in my thoughts but can't justify that price tag. My mega was a penny when we still did subsidies.

Talked again to amazon and I am "on the list" to have this registration fubar sorted out. She took additional info- my mac address on the phone specifically, and supposedly this will be fixed OTA magically. We'll see.
I do have a working sim in and phone calls work fine. I have issue with the tinny sounding speakers that are suppose to be stereo- Sounds terrible- especially with music clips ringtones. Pandora sounds bad too. I did read the reviews about the sound and it appears to be true.

So Amazon finally fixed the registration problem OTA. I can now access my Amazon stuff. Problem solved.
Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.

The specs on Samsung.com for the Fold only show NFC for Samsung Pay. They did the same thing on the Galaxy Watches.

Doubtful on AT&T or T-MO devices... You know it's always that locked bootloader thing in US phones.

I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode

Looks like we'll still be able to create a gif from a video (you could still have done it on the S9's too). Here's a tutorial for the S10's so I'm sure the Fold will be able to make one too:

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).

good that was almost a dealbreaker!!! no MST , because NFC hasnt really caught on the way they promised 6 years ago... at least not in places i frequent.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
