Galaxy tab s 10.5 completely dead - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So 2 nights ago i was watching a movie i locked it off and got up to go get some food when i come back i try to turn on the tab but its completely shutdown, first thing that comes to my mind is that the battery is empty but that was impossible because i had it at like 80%, i try to charge it nothing comes up next step i let it charge for 4 hours and try to turn it on with the button combo home+volume down+power to see if she boots into download mode but nothing works i tried booting into recovery and booting into download mode or booting normally nothing works. Next i tried to connect the tab s to the computer with a USB cable, computer doesn't detect it, tried adb and it says device not found.
I know the cables and chargers are working as i have a galaxy s6 and it had no problem charging or getting recognized by the computer, the mysterious thing is that when i put the tablet charging or connected to the PC the top of the tablet near the camera gets hot/warm.
Any help would be amazing thank you in advance.

Doesn't work.
Hard reset is POWER + VOL DOWN until it restarts.
If that doesn't work you may just have to let the battery totally run down. Takes about a day.

Right now the tablet gets perfectly cool if not on the charger like its totally off. Gonna try to let it run out but im not hopeful.

Try this.
1) connect the tab to PC
2) press Home, Vol Down and Power simultaneously up to a screen appears;
3) press Vol Down to cancel and reboot the tablet.

Tried but it didn't work.
The problem is i don't see any screen, if i could get into download mode i would flash another rom, by the way i was using iron rom 3.0 if it matters.

Are you still in warranty, as some stores will take it back without a question.
If you have any usb devices you could plug in to drain the battery, usb hdd ect to see if it resets once the battery is drained.

Bought it less than a year ago i guess i will see if its under warranty unfortunately i don't have an OTG cable.

Hey LuisAntonio96,
your problem sounds a bit like mine mentioned here.
I still don't know what might have caused it. I experienced it on two devices. Letting the battery drain on one device, it could be charged again and put into recovery mode, rebooted from there, and the other device could be restarted via recovery mode, after letting it 'cool' over night.

This just happened to me right now, what a rush ! finally , holding power, volume up + down for a few seconds made the tablet reset and the battery logo appeared, let go all the buttons. Then I just booted normally with the normal start button.
( while connected on usb) once booted the battery was at 60% , WTF was that ?

I don't know, but It happened to me too a couple of weeks ago. Just as you say, when it rebooted I had plenty of battery power left. I think mine was at about 70+%...strange!

Check whether the download mode appears(press vol down+home+power button)....if it appears then you still have a chance to recover your phone back.

I can't get into 'download mode' to unbrick - LG forced 'update'

Hello,
I'm currently downloading all the files necessary to restore my phone. I ran the stock ROM but was rooted. I chose to NOT apply to update as I'd no wish to brick my phone. However, I awoke this morning to find my phone in CWM recovery with no way out. Apparently LG forced it through. My phone won't enter 'download mode' to apply the drivers. I've tried power and volume up, power and both volume buttons pressed. Nothing - it just applies whatever menu button my phone was on within CWM.
Regardless of what happens, I'm sick at heart - I"m going to lose hundreds of photos that I hadn't backed up.
Well, it won't be so bad because of the google photo backups, I suppose. I suppose that will be okay after all!
Still, I'm tempted to take T-Mobile's offer of paying off what I owe AT&T with the remainder of my contract and jump ship. After all, the only reason I'd rooted was to take off the tracking service which was reducing my battery life by 40%.
Is there anything I can do to get my phone back to stock at least? Then re-root and then apply the damned update? Again, my only issue is not being able to enter 'download mode' to apply the drivers. Thanks very much!
I got into download mode by having the phone powered off, pressing volume up + volume down and applying the usb cable. No need to press power

I'm beginning to wonder if the battery is drained. The CWM recovery screen was on when I woke up this morning, and goodness only knows how long it had been running for and when LG forced the update. I've plugged it into a fast charger so I'll try again in about twenty minutes. Otherwise I have no idea.

We may be out of luck. My only recourse, since I'm several months away from an upgrade with ATT, is to switch to T-Mobile and let them pay off my penalty... I'm sorry you're in the same boat I am. It's awful! Good luck to you....
Take the battery out for 3 minutes. Re-Insert the battery, then hold the power button for 5-10 seconds. If you can get into CWM recovery, take the following steps.
1. Ensure the micro-usb cable is plugged into a power source, and Unplugged from the phone.
2. At the cwm recovery screen choose reboot. Not "reboot recovery".
3. As soon as you see the 1st sign the phone is powering back on, insert the micro usb cable into the phone and hold Both volume buttons.
If you don't have cwm try something similar to the above steps without using cwm.
Good luck, I just went through the same problem.
I had the update forced on me as well. First off charge your phone, second follow this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2302660
and you should get you pone back up and running. These are the steps that I took. I didn't lose much as I have a external sd card where save my pics and music too.

Okay, I was able to get into TWRP Recovery by pulling the battery out for 3 minutes. That seemed to do the trick.
Now I just have to get it back to stock E988 somehow. Putting CM 10.2 was a mistake. That's when everything went downhill..

[Q] SM-T700 Froze, Powered off - Soft bricked?

Hey guys,
Appreciate it if you could spare me some advice on how to proceed.
So I was watching a twitch stream and all of the sudden tablet froze, and the audio froze as well causing a large super high pitch noise, I hard-reset the tablet but instead of resetting it just turned off, I started to browse the forums and found that a combination of (POWER + VOL UP & DOWN + HOME) would reset the tablet, now what this did for me is turn the tablet on but it was stuck in SD CARD Mode, back again to the forums, read that letting it discharge fully and then it will be able to be charged and turned on, that worked tablet was back doing some various tasks no video again and then boom freezes again same symptoms except this time I couldn't get it to go to SD CARD Mode its very finicky after trying at various times in the day I finally got it to work, same process except this time as soon as it turned on I went into recovery factory reset it to stock, worked a bit longer this time only installed chrome, and it froze again (don't think it was chrome) , rinse repeat and I flashed the latest firmware with ODIN worked fine, I've gotten to the home screen ran through the "factory new" set up and it turned off of me again.
I plugged it in let it charge, came up with battery icon 5% 10% ect, then I left it for a while, I came back and I cant even get it to show the battery percentage(tap power) let alone turn on.
I'm fairly sure that eventually I can get it turn back on but from there I don't know what to do.
TL;DR - Tablet Froze, Hard Reset, Froze again - Rinse Repeat, ODIN to latest STOCK firmware, tablet worked for 5 min before turning off again (plugged in), present situation
Any ideas as what to be causing the freezing and how I could remedy it?
Also sometimes when it froze it turned itself off without me hard resetting it.
Thanks its been driving me insane,
Please do not hesitate to ask me to clarify or provide more information so I can help you help me.

I had the loose battery connector problem, but the symptoms do not sound the same as mine. I could get mine to boot up, but the screen would flicker and a few white lines would appear before it would reboot itself. I actually started a ticket with Samsung and got the packaging label but, upon further reading, realized that I was pretty much SOL after tripping knox, and didn't want to risk the chance of getting charged for just sending it in. If it is indeed the loose battery connector, you should be able to remove the back cover yourself and fiddle with it. Ultimately, mine needed re-soldering, and I was able to find a local electronic repair shop to do it for me for cheap.
Good luck!
UPDATE: I've managed to get into SDCARD MODE yet again, except discharging seems to get out of it, but once I plug it back in it doesn't come up charging it just black screen, until I hold some buttons and arrive back at sdcard mode. Good times.
Trying various things to get it to boot..
EDIT: Appreciate the insight Squez, I want to exhaust all the other options before opening it myself, if Knox didn't void the warranty to some degree, opening it up should put the final nail in the coffin.
EDIT2: Good news, sort of, tablet isn't dead! after numerous attempts with charge SDCARD mode, discharge, It finally start to charge properly and I managed to get it to boot, worked for a few hours then I left it to charge, and went to sleep, woke up and wont turn on again, but I am in SDCARD Mode again but need wait for it to discharge from presumably 100% ....
[What do you mean Sd card mode? DOWNLOAD mode?
Also no need to let the battery drain.
Just press VOLUME DOWN(not volume up) and POWER together then hold until it restarts.
This is a hard reset and will ALWAYS work unless the device is hard bricked. It is the equivalent of a battery pull.
I continually see here and there incorrect information regarding key combinations, even in so called guides, this forum is even guilty!
Here is what works on the 10.5lte, as far as I'm aware its the same for all versions, indeed pretty much any Samsung device.
HARD RESET:
VOLUME DOWN - POWER.
Hold until the device restarts.
DOWNLOAD MODE:
HOME - VOLUME DOWN - POWER.
Hold until the device boots.
RECOVERY MODE:
HOME - VOLUME UP - POWER.
Hold until the device boots.

I should of posted a photo earlier but here is one I found on google of same screen: (check attachments)
Except UP KEY and DOWN KEY don't do anything, its just this screen, if you attempt to hard reset ect, it will just reload this screen, hence the discharge, then plug it back in and hope it begins to charge "battery icon appears". I have gotten it to boot like this a few times.

Yeah its strange as.
I'll have a look at that, thanks.
EDIT: It just finished discharging and now I am on the battery screen.. Usually once it charges here I can get it to boot, what I'm curious is what on earth keeps causing it to freeze up, because in download mode and twrp (gone since i flashed stock via odin) it wouldn't freeze at all, only have issues with it once its booted or charging. I installed a logcat earlier hopefully that should shed some light on the situation,
EDIT2: Well another very interesting thing, the official Samsung charger wont charge it, only works if I plug it into pc or use a non-official charger, strange thing is nothing is wrong with the samsung charger or cable since I can charge my phone fully from it. These have to be some of the strangest symptoms.
EDIT3: Only works through USB port on PC for now, non official charger comes with red X on battery once booted. I assume you can work around this once rooted but that's for another time..
EDIT4: Charge through pc to around 2-3%, boot device, plug into official samsung wall charger and it begins to charge properly.
EDIT5: Hooray back to step one, trying get into SDCARD Mode, same thing happened left it overnight and it wont turn on or charge anymore.

How did you get to that mode? Looks like its trying to flash from the sd card. Ive seen safe mode but not that.

i am pretty sure the HOME - VOLUME DOWN - POWER. puts the 10.5 into the sdcard mode.
my tablet is doing very similar to sunb3ar findings.
have had it come back to me once from sdcardmode.. (let if go flat and starting charging then it would start via normal buttons)
it crashed not long after that. it got stuck in sdcard mode again, but this time none of the drain flat, put on charge has worked.. just blank..
fyi- we try to put it in RECOVERY MODE, but it does not work when in this crashed / sdcard mode state
i even disconnected the battery and then plugged back on charge.. nothing..
today i tested the battery volts, 2.8v , for a 3.8v i thought that was ok. i attached my RC lipo multi charger set to 1amp 3.7volt charge, direct to the - + on the battery- got it up to 3.5v, plugged back in, put the charger on- the sdcard mode (most life it has shown in a week).
still not coming up with 'battery' display to say its 'turn-off and being charged'. just the sdcardmode might disappear and return..
i am currently adding mode charge to battery... will try to HARD RESET next.. since i have not tried that combo yet..
HARD RESET:
VOLUME DOWN - POWER.
Hold until the device restarts.
edit: i took it off 'direct' charge, battery at 3.7volts.. then plugged in normal charger, i got a 'battery symbol' but it had the lightening bolt, not a %.. so i unplugged and reconnected to my direct charge to give the battery more volts. i am surprised that the unit seems to think a battery with 3.8volt as it specs seems to not be like with volts not much lower than 3.8.. could be time for a new battery if we can get this thing to restart

[HALP] HARD bricked!?

I have a rooted and xposed 820. And on this morning, while I am using my phone to play Pokemon Go, the phone got itself shutted down all of a sudden ( black screen ). And several seconds later it boots up, showing the green "hTC" logo alongside the red words below, and again, several seconds later ALL THE WORDS on the boot screen turned yellow and a second later the screen turned off and it reboots again! This loop has run for 4 times and in the last time I decided to go into TWRP to clear cache and davik cache and hope this will bring it back to life. Well it does make it booting into the system and showing the bootanimation, but in some seconds, it reboot again and the yellow words appear again.
After the last yellow screen appeared I was frustrated and decided to leave it shutted down ( TWRP method ) and try to fire it up later today. Later, I dissemble my phone and reseat the battery, hoping that this will reset some of the parameters inside the phone. But, just when I want to power it up after that, I found that it can be neither power up nor enter recovery. After connecting it to my adb and fastboot-installed desktop computer, it blinks orange LED lights and it CANNOT BE RECOGNIZED AS A DEVICE by my computer in device manager.
Now I am not sure if it is really hard bricked or just any other thing else

1. Disconnect your phone from the charger.
2. Press the power button 10 times at 1 second intervals to discharge.
3. Now hold down the power button for 16-30 seconds until it turns on.
4. Charge the phone correctly, even if he says that the phone is charging. WOW ... my phone is still alive !! All I did today was:
I tried the charger from my galaxy nuclei (as well as the strength of the current 820 = Htc 1A), but I used the original cable from my Htc charger. The LED indicator is still flashing, so I decided to "knock" on the back (around the site where the connector from batterry there), and then I pressed VOL- and VOL and the power button for 20-30-ies, and then I pressed the power button and VOL- about 30s, then I released everything, and then I pressed the power button for 10 seconds, and my phone is turned on !!! I'm so happy! my phone is still under warranty, but I live abroad now, so I need to send it to my country, to begin the process of warranty, but not IM free from this!
Thank you, guys, for pushing me to try again magic tricks with cables, chargers and Btw button.
My batterry is now 100% o.o = this means that it is charging all the time?
I do not know what it was, but I'm glad it's working now. 2. Tighten the two volume buttons and the power button when a black screen appears to hold the volume- button and power, smart mustget into in the loader in the boot loader to choose reboot (assuming that the system is not removed)

What Android version you have? Red text at boot screen means that kernel is modified (by SuperSU or Xposed if is installed in boot image). But I never see yellow text in my phone. Can you quote this yellow text?
Wysłano z Tapatalk / Sent with Tapatalk
From the symptoms...it seems a faulty battery.
What are the yellow texts?
@tomal @QkiZMR The yellow test are the yellow version of bootscreen, that include the "hTC" logo, "powered by android" banner and the "This build is for development purpose only. Failure to compile may lead to legal action."warning. Beside all of this, the background is still white.
@QkiZMR I have the stock android 6.0 release by hTC, rooted, xposed and S-OFFed.
@tomal I do agree with your point! Before the device shut down, I charged the whole night ( around 9 hrs ) with a 2.1A portable battery and a 3.1A portable battery and it can only charge half of my battery... I first thought that is the fault of my portable battery so I use my friend's portable battery instead and still no improvements...
P's Before the shut down, I should have about 50% of power.
P's2 I have adopted storage, running well before, does it matter?
I think that sdcard prepared as internal storage is not a issue. Something bad happen with system files. Did you try to format data partition? This will erase all your settings and apps.

Pretty sure.
I think like tomal that your battery maybe is corrupted. Did you have any measure equipment to test battery?

Yes, I have those equivalent apparatus, but I have no micro-scale pin and I am not sure the nodes of the battery, so I just took it to a local repair shop and see what's happen in it.
I hope I will have no need to buy a new phone:crying:
But if it so, I must be going back to SONY where flashing is more easier and better environment for development.
Checking finished. I took it to several repair shop and they all have different conclusion on my situation. But mainly is due to the I.C. adapter failure and faulty battery. It is repairable, but it costs me the same amount for a new D820 ( ~USD200 ) here. So I decided to give up on this phone and buy another one. Thanks for the help @tomal and @QkiZMR have offered me and if you guys have any further suggestion for me on reviving my 820, please tell me selflessly. I would like to try my best to develop some ROMs for this device once the kernel source code is out!
Maybe battery was overheated. You wrote that you playing Pokemon Go, this game use a lot of battery juice. That produce heat.
Is the battery is swollen?

Nope, the battery is still hard. Maybe the motherboard is burnt due to the continuous large current draw?
From 2A charger?

I swap between the 2.1A and 3A power bank.
Maybe 3A is too much for this phone.

But neither the 2.1A nor the 3A will charge my phone even when I am not playing the game and terminated the process. The power consumed by the phone is equal to the power charged by the batteries. So that's why I charged for nearly 9 hours and still 10% boost only...
