Hi all.
I've played with XBMC a little in the past but nothing too in depth. When I saw the Fire TV come out I ordered day one. My main goal is to completely replace all my Windows Media Center machines and switch to XBMC + Fire TV for each location in my house. The reason for this change is I believe that it will be easier to add-on a few features i've been missing with my WMC setup.
So far ive loaded XBMC and configured it. I repurposed a WMC to be my TV/DVR server in the basement using PVR.WMC. I found a few tricks and this is now functioning as my whole house DVR.
My main issues that need addressing are as follows:
Add "Fire TV" apps to XBMC main menu (Amazon Prime movies, Netflix, and Pandora)
Remote Music Channels from the PVR menu in PVC.WMC
BluRay playback
I have all my DVDs/BRs stored in ISO format on a NAS in my basement. DVDs are fine. BR is a challenge. Am I better off converting to MKV? Does anyone know a way to make a library that is also shared with PLEX?
According to this wiki

It is possible to add android apps to the xbmc menu if you are using Gotham. I tried doing it and as soon as I went to android application xbmc 13 final just crashes to the fire TV main menu.

im having the same issue. it would be a perfect box for me iff i can load the streaming services that are built in (netflix, amazon prime, hulu, pandora) from XBMC.
personally i can skip the entire Fire TV menu and live in XBMC if i can load the very nice a pretty customized fire tv apps from XBMC. kinda like using XBMC as a launcher

Wonder if it's just a problem with the final version. I am running a older version and I am able to load android apps just fine.

I will have to check when I go home it's like a week or 2 old. I can launch all the apps except for Amazon Prime.
Any problems with it? Is it buggy in any way? I'm looking for a cheap xbmc device but a raspberry pi is too much work.
I am using it and it works amazing well for me. Before I had pivos xios, ouya, MINIX neo x7 and they all their own issues. Finally for TV gives best of all of them. Only con is you have to tinker a bit but it's not too hard.

No bugs at all? If I am using XBMC, will I be able to access Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video? Also, is it easy to unroot and factory reset?

You can't go wrong. You don't need to root to install it. See the XBMC wiki or FireTV News. (I can't post urls.)

Near perfect? What problems do you have? And I hear that MPEG2 isnt supported, should I be concerned about that?

No flaws. I'm rooted but root is really not relevant to running XBMC. For years I ran Plex on a MacMini. This is way better. Just to start -- DTS pass-thru.
Sideloading is really easy. So is uninstalling. I can't see a down side here.

This is all true. However, to get the best possible XBMC experience on the KFTV will require root and to setup an XBMC Launcher (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790392). This launcher replaces the KFTV launcher while still providing access to it and Amazon Prime. It's literally the best of both worlds.

Fire TV News (link in a prior post) has guides for all your issues. I would also recommend downloading ADBFire which you can find in the Fire TV Themes and Apps subforum of this forum
Hi.
I've rooted my AFTV and installet XBMC. It works good, but I have some problems.
1) IPTV PVR SIMPLE addon not working. When I whant to play any channel it freezes and can't go back to menu. Only reset helps.
2) Some kind of shifting in rewind when making step forward or backward fo 30 sec. Very long time of buffering.
3) Sleep mode in XBMC not working properly. It reboots AFTV every time, but no sleep.
4) And the biggest problem in Audio. When I use Direct output with ac3, dts, etc the video playback begins to slow.

1. So if I don't use this addon, it won't affect me?
2. What do you mean?
3. Does this fix your problem? http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Amazon_Fire_TV#Sleep_while_XBMC_is_Open_.28Requires_root.29
4. Is there a way for audio and video playback to run smooth without this problem?

1. May be You know any other way to play IPTV playlist without installing additional server soft (such as Tvheadend)? On my HTPC I use "PVR IPTV Simple Client" and it works perfect. On AFTV it stucks.
2. Fast-forward causes everything to look choppy. I think I should edit advancedsettings.xml
3. I made all steps by this wiki. I've installed this Android Screensaver and it worked normally till today. Now my AFTV every minute reboots instead of sleep mode.
4. Yes. In standart settings it works. Without enable passthrough. But this is not acceptable for me.

Fire TV and do not look back. Besides, you have a 30 day return period throught Amazon. Try it out and see if you like it. You have absolutely nothing to lose doing so.

I have had a raspberry pi with raspbmc for over a year. I bought the firetv two weeks ago. While I enjoyed tinkering around with the pi and tweaking it to get the best experience for xbmc, the fire tv is much better. It's just so much more powerful and as a result everything is very smooth, menus, video playback - all of it. In addition, you have the added benefit of having access to netflix and amazon prime which you will not get on raspbmc. Now I have to turn on one less device when I want to watch netflix. Finally, it seems like there are some devs working on unlocking the bootloader - so I would imagine that custom roms can't be far off. So if those things sound good to you, I would highly recommend the FTV.

DTS pass-thru is something that I was banging my head against the wall to make it work, then I just saw "advanced settings" on the left bottom of menu just to find out that you need to activate this to have access to audio pass-thru. Then it worked flawlessly.
Spmc
You guys should look into SPMC for an alternative solution to xbmc. Its the same app but custom made that was designed for Ouya.works better on Amzon Fire Tv
I have Xbmc installed and I want it to see the films I have on my Mac.

Either turn on upnp sharing from xbmc on your mac or create a network share folder to share your movies and add that as a video source from xbmc on your fire
I've shared the folder and that doesn't show up, so I'll give the other way ago cheers
I tried upnp and it still won't see my mac? Would this be because one is kodi and one is gotham?
I don't assume so. Is it a firewall thing?
Im wondering if anyone knows of a way to sideload kodi into fire tv plus addons and a homescreen icon? into a fire tv?

Thinking you mean get a kodi icon to launch from...look into adbfire llama options.
As for something that's ready to go...look into tvmc.

Thanks for the info, but I needed to sideload Kodi AND a selection of add on with it. I can't seem to find .apk files for Kodi addons to do this.
Kodi addons are not apps like Kodi, so the installation is different. Sounds like you don't have much background with Kodi/XBMC, in that case the easiest way to install addons is here: http://www.tvaddons.ag/addon-installer-kodi/
If you want to get deeper into the manual installation process, your best resource is Youtube: search for something like "best video addons kodi", watch a few videos and decide which addons you want to start with, then search for "install video addon NNNNN kodi" and watch some more videos.
Do as Terry T suggested and you will be good to go. tvaddons will get you a lot of addons at once
Want to try this one on my Shield TV. The Android TV version doesn't have a live stream. I have a Fire Stick but I can't find it in the list of apks. Any ideas?

You can still find the latest AFTV version here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71504583&postcount=9
if you want live stream you have to delete the aftv app and data....sideloade this standard android version (first time run you have to use a mouse/remote to set up your provider but then you can use firetv remote to browse livetv stream - cnn/hln/cnn intern. and plays fine) here enjoy
