[Q] T805 how to stop firmware update (and notification) without root ? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, sorry if there is already an answer to this question on the forum, but I didn't find it.
All the answer on the subject I have found are dealing only with rooted tablets.
So, there is any method to block forever the automatic firmware update attempt and the related notifications, if the tablet is not rooted ?
The user is a non-technical person, and I need to be sure he will not launch the lollipop update by mistake (he does not play with the commands and settings he does not understand, but is very easy to launch the update from notification area, by mistake).
Also, the notification is annoying.
Thank you,

Really ? No solution ?
Thank you,

Hi, I am on lollipop right now and hopefully it should be similar to KitKat. Simply, when the notification shows in in your notifications, just hold on it, then when it shows app info hit that, then uncheck show notifications. Then it should stop popping up

Thanks, but it doesn't apply, as the checkbox (and all the buttons around, "clear cache", clear data" etc) are greyed out on that app

If you can find what app does the update, I wonder if the app below could disable it, it works without root, it might be worth a go.

Hi Nick61,
as you're talking about the Android updates, I would guess that you'll find what you're looking for under 'Device information'. I don't have the T-805 with KK at hand but if I look at my KK devices, you'll find it under the tab 'Options' -> 'Device information' -> 'Software update' -> unckeck 'automatic update'. (I use the german android version, so I'm not exactly sure that are the correct english terms)
I've done that and haven't been bothered with any update notification. hope that helps a bit.

Sorry for so late answer and thanks for your help.
Only today I had the tablet again in my hand. The "package disabler" app was the solution, thanks Tinderbox !
I was able to disable (sic!) the "software update" apps (there are 2 of them). Both apps had the disable button inaccesible in the normal settings menu (greyed out), but the "package disabler" is working with administrator rights (only on Samsung devices, as I've read) and it disabled both apps.

Glad you found a way to stop the update, it`s good to know, now you can hide the package disabler app so it not used by accident, but does the disabling survive when you restart the tablet.
John.

As said above I'm sure before I rooted my tab that all that was required was to disable auto update.

Unfortunately, simply unchecking the auto-update option from settings/about did not solve the problem on this tablet (on my note3 this was the normal solution, but not on this tablet). The update app was still downloading the new firmware (OTA) and it was stridently pushed in the notification area, with no option remained, other than to ignore it (and with the risk of touching it by mistake).
Thanks,

Can you post a photo of the apps/processes you had to disable and there location.
Thanks
John.

[Q] How to Disable Automatic Updates

I have a question for some of the experts. Can someone point me in the right direction to disable automatic OTA updates? I am currently using a ROM that is not being supported by the developer and would prefer to stick with it if possible.

No. OTA Updates have to be disabled by the chef of the ROM. In my case the Chef did not disable them and I am wanting to get rid of that damn annoying pop up that says there is an OTA update.
Here's how to fix it with Root Explorer (from the Market).
Open Root Explorer, scroll down to and click on "System". In the upper right corner, click on "Mount R/W". You will see a file called "build.prop", long press on it and select "open in text editor".
Scroll down, you are looking for a line that reads:
"ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/"
The 231334 might be a different number, but whatever it is, you need to change it to 264707, then save and exit, click on "Mount R/O", then reboot the phone. My notification was still up after I rebooted, however after tapping on it and hitting back, it went away. It shouldn't bug you to do the update anymore after that
For reference:

Thanks. This worked well.
In the future, please post your question in the q & a section instead of the development section. Thanks, and welcome to the community.

What app is sending you these notifications? File Manager? App Manager?
Hold down on the notification until you see a bell and an i. Hit the i to get information.
There should be a box that says notifications on the app info... Uncheck that. Reboot the phone and see if it appears again (It shouldn't).

If you're on Lollipop:
Hold down on the notification and get the info. Make sure it's unchecked (Could be a different app sending that one).
If it's already unchecked:
Go to your settings and find "Notification Manager". Enter this and hit "App notifications". Find the app that sent the above notification and tap on it. Now you can adjust it and set priorities and whatnot. For this, block notifications from it.
This may block notifications for system updates as well, but you can still check it manually. Plus, system updates don't happen very often so not seeing it won't really matter.
EDIT: Misunderstood what you meant... I underlined what to do in your case.
Edit 2: I'm running a custom ROM and that's how I would do it in my case. I failed to remember that the stock ROM may not have added these features, so you can also do this (for sure) but going to your settings and hitting apps, then scrolling over to all. Find the app manager (or whatever app uses the same icon as the one sending you the notifications) and click on it. Now you can uncheck the displaying of notifications from it.

Read that^^^
Also, unchecking notifications from "Google Service Framework" may remove notifications for these type of updates.
If you are rooted and already have SuperSU you can download Titanium backup and uninstall any app from your phone. BE CAREFUL BECAUSE SOME APPS ARE IMPORTANT. Also, make sure you backup the file before removing it via titanium (backup through titanium backup) in case you for some reason need it back. This may or may not remove the prompt to update the app, but way back when (if I remember correctly) it did for me.

Glad to hear it! If you ever have any more questions feel free to PM me.
Also, I would highly recommend you try out a free app called "LG Tweaks Box". It'll make your phone feel so much better and have tons of customization!
I'm not sure if this even/still applies but when I was on KitKat (LG G3 2GB) I rooted my device then used either Root Explorer or ES File Explorer File Manager and looked in the data\op folder on device and deleted anything I didn't want (mainly anything carrier related which was all of the H3G_COM folder (30 items) as it was a 3 UK handset) then reflashed firmware and wiped device and I have never had any apps forced on me since, i've even disabled auto restore of apps from Google Play on first sign in so I can be choose what I wanted installed at each reflash/wipe.
Back up the OP folder first as It is handy for later if ever needed
Again not sure if this even/still applies
Hope that helps
Thanks for the reply
But sorry to say that my Data/Op folder has no Carrier APPs
i have done a full search on phone an just cant find the junk
i still have a message saying i have 15 APPs to update even with APP update frozen with RootUninstaller

to get rid of the security notice you will get(because the system is now rooted) simply install root explorer(or any root browser) and go to /system/app and delete securitylogagent or go into the folder and rename it adding .bkp to the end of the file name and reboot.
per

I began getting this, too, after rooting my Note7. I solved it the way others suggested, with Titanium Backup by freezing the Security Log Agent. That worked for me.

do you still have knox? i use samsung pay and security folder
You used the sprint method root at the N930V PHE or PH1? Not really related to thread, but just out of curiosity.
Same problem....
I'm having this same problem with my rooted note 7.
I've searched everywhere for securityagent on my note 7 and it's not there. The only way I can remove this threat found/restart device, is to remove device maintenance.
But then I lose the app done function and the advanced setting power saving mode.
I have disabled all knox and security realated apps.
But still still get the threat while device maintenance is there.
Does anyone know what the equivalent to securitylogagent is on a note 7 ????
Any help would be much appreciated, I am a noob, until 3 days ago I knew nothing, but I managed to unlock frp and root my note 7, but its been stressfull. I need help now...thanks.

You should have a package named SecurityLogAgent. Disabling this will stop the security notifications due to rooting. If you're referring to the Samsung messages regarding the recall, then you need to disable the Samsung Push service or just the notifications.

I'm not referring to them notifications, I have disabled Samsung push.
There is no package with the name 'securitylogagent' on my note 7.
I have researched this alot before joining and posting here. Its simply not there, no matter what I use to look for it. Just not there..
I would really like device maintenance back.. that's how iv got it disabled at the moment.
I am referring to the 'that found/restart device" warning that flags up in device maintenance.

What firmware version are you on? What have you used to look for it?
I'm on 6.0.1, that I rooted on Sunday after I accidentally updated package disabler. I am a complete noob and have managed to just about get to this point without help.
I have looked for it using titanium backup, root browser and device control. It doesn't show on any...
So I have disabled a load of other things including device maintenance, com.samsung.andoid.sm.devicesecurity, and security manager service...
I was hoping one of these was the equivalent of securitylogagent.
Does this information below help?

So by the build number I see that you are not on a Verizon firmware so the app names may be different. It appears you have UK firmware so you will have to find what the app name is for that firmware.
What I can suggest is that the next time you get the notification, long press on the icon at the left. You should be taken to the notification options for that app and you should also see an app info button on the right. you may be able to track the actual app down using this info or at least disable notifications.
Thanks for your reply.
Oh crap, I'll never find it then...
Is there a way I could post an image of my system so as some experienced members on here may look at it.??
Thanks again.

How to disable update check?

I have the latest official 8.1 ROM and don't want to update to PIE yet.
But notification about this update is just like the ones from iPhone, keeps coming back and I see no way to turn it off.
I've disabled automatic update in developer settings, but would like to disable checking for update and notification about it also.
In my other phones there always was system app called "Update" or "System-update" and stopping/disabling it was enough to stop bothering me.
Is there any way to disable checking for update and notification about existing update?
My phone is not rooted.
When the notification comes for the system update just slide it right/left but not all the way, just halfway across the screen and let it go. This way you'll see "snooze" and a "gear". Tap on the gear and then "Don't show notifications"

I don't think there's any thing more you can do about it Disabling from Developer Settings and hiding the notification is all I can say about it
Disable automatic system updates in developer options.
If developer options are not enabled, activate by giving 7 clicks on "Build number" (Settings / About phone / Build number)
Go to System / Advanced / Developer Options / Automatic System Updates
Disable and no longer have automatic updates. When you want to update, you'll need to manually fetch.
What is keeping you from rooting and removing updater package from system/app? Especially if you are not planing to update to pie yet

This advice might help a bit..
Regarding, the toast pop up that you can't read, you can either install "Nice Catch" which is part of Samsungs, Good Lock app.
If you can't download, Good lock app from
Galaxy Store then you can download /sideload, the stand alone apk, from Apkmirror web site.
Then manually install apk .
Please note if you sideload app, it won't show in app drawer. You have to use a shortcut method
eg Nove Launcher /(then long press on desktop screen .) /Nova widgets / activities , search for" Nice catch" and create short cut,. to desktop screen. Then tap on it and configure.
Otherwise, you can download an app from Play Store
eg. "Toast Source" (free app) etc.
This method is maybe faster and less hassle.?
If any of these above apps are enabled it will "catch/record" all you toasts as notifications and also save the toast pop-ups.
It might not solve you issue directly, but at least it is a start
to read the popup toast?
See screenshots
Good luck.
Will try thanks

I'm not sure how explain this......
but is you phone not a company device or has device some rental agreement , plan etc.
I have read on past post on XDA forums that members could not update, as their devices were "locked" ...?
Otherwise did you use any app like eg... App Disabler Pro etc etc.
That you disable an app and it has a knock on effect.?
Bottom line,
you now have a reason why not updating..
as toast says something "systems" is disable.?
Good luck..
yeah i might have to do a hard reset to see if that helps

Well toast says "systemfs" is disabled.
Well i personally can't disable it on my device as device is
stock not rooted etc. Also i have not used any disabler app.
For the "sysfs... @ systemfs??? " to be disabled, I'm sure you have to be rooted...?
or as stated above, you disabled some system app with a eg "Disabler Pro" app. etc.
Bottom line. again ..
Hopefully a factory reset should rectify the relevant system error..
Somehow it got corrupted.
Good luck.
