[Q] Question regarding downgrading - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an A5_UL and I want to downgrade to ROM version just one point before it went to Lollipop. First of all, I can't find my carrier nor country/region on HTC's RUU Site, can I just flash an European RUU with HTC as a carrier? I do live in Europe but my carrier certainly isn't HTC. Also, which version was the stock ROM before it upgraded to Lollipop. I know it started with android 4.4.2. but I'm sure there were some updates in between that I don't want to miss.
Note: I am S-OFF
Thanks upfront!

There were several 4.4.2 updates. for most devices, the last one before Lollipop(2.34) would be 1.58. RUU is usually not available for most variants. you can root your phone and restore a Nandroid backup of 1.58 but you'll need to find such backup specific to your device here. If you're S-OFF thenyou wqon't be limited to certain CIDs/regions but you should still watch for MIDs

So if I'm S-OFF, I can flash the RUU for any carrier and region as long as I flash the Desire 816 ones? Also, on the HTC's site there is no mention of any carrier or model ID's so even if I determine the one for my phone it still wouldn't mean much when choosing a RUU to flash.

Mids are important; you may be able to install anything because you're S-off, but That's exactly the reason that you should be extra careful because there are no safety measures to prevent you from damaging your device. Devices with different Mids may have slightly different hardware/ antenna , so installing a different RUU may damage your device

I understand but I can't find any information related to MIDs on the HTC's site from where I intend to download the RUUs. How do I discern which one will work on my phone?

I think it has. If you hover over download links in the last column, you will see that file names begin with variant names.
I guess it would be easier to just find the most recent kitkat nandroid backup of A5_UL around the net, but I wouldn't know for sure as I haven't looked for it

That download link idea was genius, I'd never think to look there - although hovering did nothing, clicking on it opened the download window which I think had the necessary information in it.

Is the last part MID? Do I even need it? The download says it's for A5_UL and my phone is A5_UL. I'm pretty sure the minor differences between the phones are differentiated by UL, DUG, DWG (and so on...) so if I flash UL to UL, I should be okay? I found the nandroid backups for my phone but I prefer not to use someone's backup as a primary way of restoring the phone.

I don't know about the last part but generally, if it's A5_UL and you're S-off, then it's possible and it will be OK (fingers crossed); although I'm not sure if these files are really RUUs (more like kernels and other stuff for developers) and flashable. you can always try.
nandroid backup is a good idea; they're usually untouched, and you can always do advanced wipe and factory reset afterwards to revert them backup to original.
good luck anyways
EDIT* some region codes, you might find useful. though it's more important with S-ON devices

Hello Experts...
I was looking for a tutorial to downgrade my HTC 816 Dual Sim [DWG India] from Lollipop 5.0.2 to Kitkat 4.4.4 as i was having issues with WiFi after restoring a Lollipop update via A5_DWG Lollipop TWRp Backup Indian Users
And i have located my v.4.4.4 MR file from HTCdev...
Can some one plz help me to install the downloaded MR file so that i can make my WiFi working and go back to KitKat version safely....
A step by step guide will be most welcomed as i m not an expert in this...
And my handset is now S-ON, ***TAMPERED***, ***UNLOCKED***

I'll probably go with the nandroid backup method because I really need something failsafe - this is still a new phone and I don't want a three month old paperweight. Regarding wiping data and cache, yes that is good but someone could still easly modify the system apk's before backing up. I'm not saying that method isn't valid, I just try to avoid it for security reasons. Also thanks for digging up that code list, it doesn't help me but it might help someone else.
And you, @chikkus5088, you can't downgrade by RUU unless you're S-OFF so just get a TWRP/CWM kitkat backup like said above for your model and you're good to go.

If you can find the rxact OTA or firmware for your device, I can guide you on how to fix your wifi problem in lollipop. otherwise, listen to CrashBandicootX and find a suitable Nandroid backup (CWM/TWRP)

If i download the lollipop version from the HTCdev.com will that able to sort the issue of WiFi...?

I'd always do the wipe. Ofcourse, make a Nandroid backup beforehand, just in case.

Bad news for all, HTCDev doesn't distribute RUU's after all. Why does no company do this? Anyways - thank you @seekfind for taking the time to help us all. I'm about to flash the nandroid backup I've found on the net but before I do that, is there a way to backup my applications and data from the Lollipop version? I know Lollipop always runs ART so all of my apps that get backed up are already precompiled making them unusable with Dalvik VM - can I switch the stock HTC's Kitkat rom to ART or did they disable that?

Please use simple language and be patient. I'm new to HTC but have de-branded Samsungs with Odin and the equivalent on Sony

So when you say de-brand, you're looking to remove carrier bloat? What is your carrier?
So, the short answer is...to debrand (which in HTC One M9 terms means to convert to developer edition), you're going to have to:
1) Have GSM carrier
2) Unlock your phone and install TWRP custom recovery
3) Root (this is only temporary, when you flash developer rom you'll no longer be rooted)
4) Use the sunshine app to s-off (security off) your phone - this will allow you to...
5) Change your model id (MID) and carrier id (CID)
6) flash developer edition rom
here is a good guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-one-m9/general/att-developer-edition-ruu-how-to-t3086948
Remember, you need to be GSM (no sprint, no verizon)
Thanks for that, I'm on a UK GSM carrier (VodaFone). Will the developer edition be compatible with UK networks?

Then it's better you use one of the x.xx.401.xx firmwares from the link in my signature. Those are the international WWE (World Wide English) versions unbranded European M9s get shipped with. Nevertheless the DE (Developer Edition) RUUs would be compatible with your phone, too.

Need help to find US firmware and rom to use LTE

Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me.
I have an asian unlocked M8 and I live in Mexico so I cant use LTE. To solve this I got S-off, supercid, wwe mid and wwe firmware with Android Revolution Rom and still cant use LTE (Europe LTE bands do not include band 4 aws, so its the same crap). I tried to flash att and t-moble radio but mi phone did not recognise the radio file (Unknown baseband) so I get no signal. Then I flashed the wwe radio and got the same no recognition problem. The only way to get back signal is to flash again the firmware (it does not work to switch the att radio image in wwe firmware)
I need att or t-mobile bands to use mexican carriers Telcel or Movistar LTE (band 4 aws) and I guess I should use att or t-mobile firmware with the matching based rom.
- Can someone recomend me a rom version and firmware version to download??
- Is the unknown baseband problem because of the wwe mid? Should I also change the wwe to att or t-mobile mid and cid??
Thanks for your time and help!!

What if you current firmware version, is it Euro 4.16.401?
Where did you get the AT&T radio(s) and what is the file name?
Are you sure you are using the baseband for the right Android version (4.4.4 or 5.0, etc.)? If you are using the wrong radio for the Android version, that is the only reason I can see for any problems. As long as you are using the right version (Lollipop radio with a Lollipop ROM, etc), the radios should be interchangeable (with exception of Verizon, Sprint, M8x, dual SIM - don't mess with those).
But I would still advise to flash the whole firmware (not just the radio) to assure that everything plays well together.

I would suggest the Lollipop AT&T firmware (4.28.502) or Dev Edition (4.16.1540 - same band support as AT&T version) which you can get here (attached with the full ROM, unfortunately): http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/development/att-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
After that, you should be able to use just about any Lollipop ROM for the M8.

Yes, my current firmware is 4.16.401.10
I got the radio images from here, but I certanly mixed basebands with android versions.
I will go with your suggestion of flash a whole firmware.

As I said, the firmware can be used with most any Lollipop M8 custom ROM.
The instructions say you need 4.16.401 firmware, but that's just a "lazy" requirement. Any Sense LP firmware should work with the current InsertCoin. To be fair, many of the "international" devs are Euro based, so they have little or no experience with other region's firmwares; and don't want to be held responsible for issues that arise for using them.
You should use or select the firmware based on region and carrier band support (in addition to Android version); not by ROM.

You can. I'm personally not crazy about AT&T specific "features" (as the ROM is meant to include). Even having AT&T as a carrier, I tend toward the non-ATT based ROMs.
You may need to manually enter your carrier's APN info to get data connection.
Perfect.
I am currently in my work but at night I will follow your suggestions and come back tomorrow -or as soon as posible- to inform if this worked and may be useful to someone else.
Best regards!!

Hi,
I flashed succesfully the att latest firmware, but it is the same, no LTE signal.
I recently found this posts to UNLOCK QUALCOMM BANDS and I tried to follow the steps to do so, but they are very unclear and I got stuck in step 3.
I wanted to come back to this post to share a solution, but i cant find it. If you can complete the guide, please share your results.
Best regards.

Check your APN, sometimes carriers use a different one to support LTE.
Otherwise, if you tried only one firmware (such as AT&T) then try another: T-Mob or Dev Ed all supposedly support AWS.

VoLTE on Generic FW

Hi there.
I have a HTC 10 on generic 1.80.401.1 FW. The handset has been S-Offed to get it to this current generic FW.
I wanted to do this orginally to ensure I can get relatively quick updates if I needed to (able to flash any FW). But at the same time avoid using custom FW (my bank's online banking app doesnt like rooted phones).
I've spoken with my network provider- Vodafone AU about setting VOLTE. and it looks like my FW doesnt have the option to switch it on....(no Advanced calling section).
So, I'm not sure what my options are....
1, Flash a Vodafone AU FW and deal with slow updates?
2. Flash some other generic FW that CAN switch the right settings on? (help? )
3. Flash Custom rom with root and then try and fool the apps I have that dont like root? Also, any custom roms which definitely work with all VOLTE?
thanks for any assistance.

What do you mean not able to flash vodafone FW?
In there http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/stock-stock-collection-recovery-ruu-ota-t3359297
There is the following backup:

Questions about the htc 10 with software version 1.80.709.1

Hi everybody,
i am currently in the process of buying an htc 10 BUT as i had the m7 and struggled a bit (read -alot-) in finding proper ruu (exe) i have a couple of questions :
1. the devices (red and gold colors) i saw on display are on software version 1.80.709.1 and from a search on google it appears as it is the Taiwanese version , how does it differ from the European version with software identity 401 ? i mean hardware differences(LTE bands and whatnot).
2.after achieving s-off (if possible on this variant?) can i convert the device to WWE and update to the latest firmware and use the 401 ruu?
BTW i live in Ukraine and the htc 10 was not officially released here so that sucks ! the devices cost approximately 600$ for the 32 GB variant and 70$ more for the 64 GB variant.
here are the images of the device in question :

hey.
i've bought the same version through Amazon. the same 709 edition.
the latest version for it is 1.92.709.1.
You can do SOFF, root ,install other rom and ect..
for the LTE bands, check your region exactly.
personally, i just made root, TWRP, and manually flashing firmware. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE to flash 401 firmware of other, except 709!
for that youll need SOFF, CID... (25$ sunshine app).
but for me.. it;s just a waste.. i can wait couple of weeks for firmware update for TW, as it doesnt different from 401.
you can install other 401 roms though. - i personnaly installed Venon rom 3.0 (it has 1.95.401 and mine is 1.92.709) - no issues.

Thank you for the reply , if i understood correctly i CAN flash the 401 firmware ONLY if i am s-off right ? but you saying that the 709 firmware is not lagging behind very much (two weeks) does make me hesitate on doing that.
what about the stock system ? can i make a backup of it and use it with original boot, stock firmware , stock recovery and revert to stock COMPLETELY (since there is no ruu available) and receive OTA updates ? if yes then i will be getting the phone soon, and YES viper rom for htc phones is the best, i used it on the m7 and i haven't found any rom like it since its the best!
Yes, you understood correcttly, and there are already stock images of backup for that. Sometime (like this case) the tw comes before 401.
1.92 with August security patch came BEFORE 401. So it's just pure luck
appreciate all the info

BTW i live in Ukraine and the htc 10 was not officially released here so that sucks ! the devices cost approximately 600$ for the 32 GB variant and 70$ more for the 64 GB variant.
here are the images of the device in question :
and a picture of it in download mode
any help would be greatly appreciated .

Hi !
Pick the color you like.. (however carbon grey is way better than red) then simply do nothing furthermore - enjoy your awesome device..
HTC__621 (i.e. Taiwanese unit) will work just fine in your country, and getting OTAs among the First..
Have fun.
Cheers.

The main goal is not receiving OTA updates as i will be using a custom ROM anyway, i just ask because in case i need to return to stock i will find the firmware and stock image system, although the 709 has a few backups of every firmware in a thread. and about color preference since i had the black m7 i was thinking of getting the silver 10 (the one with the black borders around the screen imo the white borders look ugly) the devices used in the picture are just for example since they are the only ones available in store.
Glacier Silver with black face can't be .709 but .617 only...

well .... no, not currently but i do not live here permanently so that should not be a deciding factor.
i got almost all the info from the help the users here gave me , so there shouldn't be any confusion when getting the new device.

Please! I need this 0PJAIMG_HIMA_UHL_N70_SENSE80_MR_hTC_Asia_HK_4.27.7 08.3

There have been sites that claim they have the firmware but say you'll need a premium account. If anyone has access to this firmware, it would be highly appreciated. Im using HK HTC M9 with unlocked bootloader and S-ON but when I flashed ARHD, I get No SIM signal. I'm trying to get back to stock or if anyone has any idea of a custom ROM that would give me SIM signal that would be great as well.
The latest ruu for your M9 is marshmallow: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=673368273298946916
You can't flash this ruu if you're on higher version with s-off.
Theoretically all himaul nougat roms should have signal on this firmware.
Thats what makes it weird! My stock ROM was Nougat but there are only Marshmallow firmwares online

What is your current CID and MID given in fastboot?
It would be a good idea to share all the info, except imei, from fastboot.
It might be the CID and MID has been changed hence you got nougat.
Did you got it from ebay or something like so?
Guys, there's nothing special about this situation. All M9 variants got updated to android N/firmware 4.x.
You need to keep in mind that RUUs don't get distributed officially (well, except for the US ones). They get leaked by insiders and no one knows if or when a RUU for a non-US firmware gets leaked.
@lucyr03:
That isn't the latest RUU. It's only the latest one that is freely available. Most contributers just moved on to newer devices and therefore, no one has bought newer RUUs, yet. You can find a 4.27.708.3 RUU* e.g. on easy-firmware. Someone would need to buy and to reupload it to AFH, though.
* The needed file is called
