Lollipop update - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I was directed to adadevelopers by someone who suggested this would be the best place to post my question.
I've had my Tab S 10.5 for several months now, and for the most part I love it.
I now have a notification that lollipop is ready to install, but I would rather not install it as I will shortly be going travelling for 6 months and don't wish to have any last minute issues to deal with at this busy time, plus a friend who already accidentally installed the update on his Tab S has now run into problems.
Anyway, reasons aside I would really like to know how to delete the download.
I have also noticed that my battery power drains much quicker since the lollipop download, but I don't know for sure if that could be the cause.
Any help will be gratefully received, but please don't get too technical. I had a quick skim of these forums and it all looks quite complex in places.
Thanks

Hi.
Follow the guide in the link below, I wanted to stay on kitkat and skip lollipop, so i found the thread below, but i did not need to use it, I dont know if it`s because i disabled the update or because i rooted my T800

Thanks for your reply.
In Device storage I have neither cache/fota/ or data/fota

Are you rooted, some system files/directorys dont show up till you are rooted i think, I am not an expert as you can see.

More of an expert than I am. I don't even know what rooted is.
My worry is this is all going to go over my head now. I just want to delete this one download.

Are you certain you don't have /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) , I have /data but it is empty no fota directory but i never had the update message.

Pretty certain.
I looked at the following:
Device storage/cache/Metoffice/ (Empty)
And
Device storage/Android/Data/ (a bunch of stuff here but nothing called fota)

Maybe you have to download the update, they delete it, then click the update and it fails like in the guide mentioned.
EDIT: have a look though some of these google hits they may help you.

Thanks again for your help. Looks like I would have to do this rooting thing then. I don't own a computer anyway and I'd probably stuff it up if I did have one. Not to mention voiding a warranty on a 3 month old tablet.
I had no idea it was so hard to delete one thing. Now im stuck with this stupid download

I rooted my UK T800 last week it was not that difficult, but you do take a risk of messing up your table, I would ignore the update message and enjoy your holiday.

Thanks I will do. Can it be explained why my tablets battery drains faster since the download?

Hi.
Maybe your tablet is being kept awake by the updater, my T800 only uses 1-2% in 16 hours while it is off because the tablet is going into deep sleep, if the updater is keeping your tablet from sleeping or some other app or process.
The free program below, will show how your tablet to use each percentage, run this overnight and post the results tomorrow.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ck.batterymonitor&hl=en
EDIT : You could look in settings in the applications section, and select running processes see if any are to do with updates, if they are you can click on them and stop the process.

Hi
Strange: In the Apps Settings section it says I have 27 apps running, but when I tap the soft touch button on the device (the button which allows me to close apps by slidding them up or down), it only shows 6 apps running.
Anyway, I don't see anything obvious in the 27 running apps that is connected to the lollipop download, not that half of them look familiar though.
Regarding the Kapex app. I couldn't see any instructions so I just opened the app this morning and left my tablet running all day. No idea if I needed to close apps or anything, but I have the results. No idea how to share the results here though. I tried opening a log but apparently I don't have the application to perform that action lol.
It seems like from my original issue I am now trying to figure out something completely different.
BTW my tablet doesn't appear to have any drain issues when its in standby, just when im using it. It seemed fine before this blimmin lollipop download

there are no setting with the Kapex app, just look at the approx time you left your tablet, and look at the battery % , then look at the time you woke your tablet up and look at the % at that time and see how much % you have lost.
Do you have the T800 or the T805 as it uses more power because it has cell.
EDIT: that is great if you don't have a battery problem while it is sleeping.
Try GSam Battery Monitor, and put the widget on your home screen and it will show how many mah your tablet is using, also GSam will show which apps are using the most battery power.

Thanks John. I have the T800.
I am running the Gsam app. It doesn't show any evidence that the lollipop download is draining the battery, although funny enough it does show gsam in the top 3 drainers. Gsam seems to be running even when I slide it closed.
I have just run CCleaner, which was always useful back in my PC days. Sadly it didn't do much to help my tablet. It certainly didn't get rid of lollipop! @@

GSam is number 10 on my list from the App Sucker, I dont think your tablet has any problems, just ignore the lollipop update and do the update when you get back from holiday.

android os always on 'keep awake'

Hi guys,
Got my lovely new galaxy nexus and have been absolutely loving it apart from the battery life. Its not uncommon for it to be in the red after 8 to 10 hours with only an hour or less of screen on time. Im not new to android so ive tried the usual stuff like checking sync settinga... the culprit appears to be android os. According to the battery use screen, the android os 'keep awake' time is the same as the time on battery, so about 10 hours. This seems ridiculous. Has anyone seen anything similar and what can i do about it?
When you go to battery and click Android OS - are you seeing the keep awake time here as very long? Or are you talking about the awake graph when you click the graph at the top?
This shouldn't be happening in any case. Click through all the apps on the main battery screen and see which one is awake the most. Some app must be calling some android API and keeping things awake. Worst case uninstall apps a few at a time and try to narrow it down.
If you've recently installed any new apps one of those may be misbehaving, otherwise you may need to do a factory reset to fix it.
edit: sounds like you may be seeing the same thing others are here

Its when i click android os- the keep awake is the same as the time on battery, or sometimes more. Ill double check the graph.
Its been like this since I bought it I think, but since it automatically gets the apps I had on my old phone on first boot, it could be one of them. Ive also been splashing out in the 10p sales.
So probably just factory reset and gradually reinstall things? Thanks.
Are you running stock rom ?
All stock at the moment.
xhausx - My problem doesn't seem quite the same- they're reporting a high percentage on the android os process, but for me it's more like 20% rather than 40 or so. It's more the lack of ever sleeping that's the problem I think.
I've got watchdog installed- what should I be looking for exactly?
Looking through my installed apps I realised that Flash was there even though it's not supported. I've removed that, time will tell if that was relevant!
A not for anyone else having this problem - It's early days but battery life seems better and the phone now sleeps! I removed a few items but Flash stands out as the suspect. So anyone who migrated from another device with flash installed, make sure that flash didn't end up on your nexus when it resynced apps with your google account.
I did the Google 'resync' but for some reason Flash 11 didn't transfer over. Same for Air.
Just as a comparison. My SGN has been on this charge for 1day 13 hours and my Android OS keep awake time is only 2 hours 28 minutes and I have about 45 apps installed. So if you have high keep awake time one if your apps is causing it.
I got such good battery life this run cause I wasn't using it with the screen on constantly.

That I know, but wasn't aware the sync option also looked at this. First time transfer from Android phone to Android phone.
Sorry how are you running flash?
Now I'm not sure if you checked this but in the "developer options" of the settings menu there is a "stay awake mode" and even though it says "only when powered" but could it be that is checked and working all the time?
I had this problem too, and in true IT Crowd fashion, turning it off and on again sorted it out. Problem is, now I've found out GPS isn't working on my phone. Goddamn it.
Hi,
Can you explain in more detail?
Are you saying that you had this Android OS keep awake time, but not anymore?
And you fixed it by turning off the phone and on again?
Thanks

any replies please?
Provide some more details. What firmware are you on. What performance mode are you on. What did you do with your device. What exactly was 2hrs left ? If you go to power management, on the bottom there is an option for time left details for each specific function you use like calling and browsing. Also the standby time being so many hours does not mean you can actually use the device with the same amount of time. So endurance mode might give you hours of extra standby but using the device would drain the battery as usual.
The 2 hours are based on your average use. The phone doesn't know in advance how it will be used. If it is just laying on the desk it could work another 5 hours. If you are playing a heavy multi-player game, the battery will be enough just for 5-10 min.
I am on b111. Please look at my screenshot, Loon at the time left for movies. I can get 2.5 hours out of the phone, but it says 4 hours.
Also the average use you talked abought in previous post, my phone dies faster than the time left said on standby. What tweaks do you guys suggest? The battery life sucks!! Will b122 give alot of battery improvement? Thanx alot for the replys

B122 is more stable and bug free than b111.
Check if there are other apps draining your battery in the background like google apps sync or autoupdates or location service.
Gsmarena tested our device (most probably on earliest buggy firmware) and they got video playing time of 7hrs: http://blog.gsmarena.com/huawei-ascend-p6-completes-our-battery-tests-here-is-the-full-breakdown/
Set your display brightness to minimum, turn off WiFi, mobile data, synchronization, BT, GPS, screen rotation, background data and so on and test again.

Sorry I am new on this phone. I had an Galaxy Ace till a week ago, I flashed hundreds of roms, kernels, experiments. but on this phone I am afraid of brickin. Its an expensive phone. so I havent even rooted it. I cant seem to find an official B122 firmware. only leaked. so I am affraid to flash it. And I cant find an step for step guide.
Also, my mobile data is on and auto rotate. I have to keep this on otherwise there is no point for me to have this phone.

The bricking happens only with Chinese version roms and not interntional version. And only b111 is official international version. The rest are leaked.
The guides are available as pdf file, when you download the B111 from Huawei website or you can find them at huaweinews.com. And the method is same as how you upgraded to b111.
Yes sure, but it is matters like that which drain the battery more than what it says on the power manager.

[Q] Why is my phone not going into deep sleep?

For some reason my M9 doesn't want to go into deep sleep much. Out of the 1 hour I have it off the charger, only 2 minutes were in deep sleep. I haven't used the phone at all in that 1 hour, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be sleeping.
Does anyone have this problem or know how to fix it? Thanks

Buy, install, do proper settings, put it into monitoring mode.. then switch of screen and go sleep - in the morning see the activities what were happening during the night monitored..

I've used a very similar app. There are no wake locks. All it says is "Android OS" is using 100% of the screen off battery. Even in the normal HTC battery settings, android OS is using 100%. Thanks for the help though.
System Panel is neither similar nor showing you those funny wakelocks..
It thoroughly informs you about CPU usage last night..

Thanks, but all those apps are the same. They can only get a certain amount of info from the core system. There are apps that do the exact same thing for free, which is what I use.
As an update to my problem, rebooting the phone and clearing cache seemed to have solved the issue for now.

If you run out of ideas on how to fix this, I'd say get root, get Xposed, and get Power Nap. Pretty much blocks all wakelocks at night and I see like 1% drain the next morning.

Wait...xposed works on 64bit phones? Wow I've been missing out for nothing lol.
Yes, but make sure you use the xposed arm64 file.
This thread has the stuff
Here's the zip you want xposed-sdk21-arm64.zip
And you also need the alpha installer.

What do you do to reduce your Tab S power drain?

I have a SM-T800 on CM12.1 that averages a current drain of around 60 mA during deep sleep. I also have a OnePlus One that averages around 9 mA during deep sleep.
I'm using Battery Monitor Widget Pro with the "Android mA" setting to get my readings on the SM-T800.
Obviously, there's quite a difference there. The SM-T800 draws almost 7x as much current while it's doing nothing - no screen on time.
It makes me think that there must be something I can do to reduce the current drain, especially with a rooted device. But, I haven't been able to figure out what.
Has anyone been successful getting their battery drain lower? If "yes", what have you done?
Thanks,.
¿GJ?
Did you forget the thread you made 2 weeks ago.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/help/sm-t800-barry-drain-t3157867
John.
Yeah, @Tinderbox (UK), but since the title was messed up I didn't think folks were looking/responding/searching to the older thread.
I think this is still something we can all benefit from, if someone has figured out a way to get our power consumption down. And if someone does respond back to this thread, other folks will be able to find it when they search now.
I use Euphoria OS and debloat it, that gives me a few weeks of standby if it's just sitting on a shelf. Ensure you delete Trebuchet (replace with Nova/Apex/etc) as it sucks a huge amount of CPU power when idle.
If you can run without GApps you'll maximize the savings.
As i said last time my T800 only used 1-2% in 16hours what ma does that work out too, the battery is 7900mah
7900mah/100 =79/16*2=9.8mah
Every time you install an app, it can make an huge difference, if it stops your tablet from sleeping.
You need to check your wakelocks to see which apps are keeping your tablet from going into deep sleep, auto check for emails, sync, alarms will cause your tablet to come out of deep sleep.
John
Thanks, @Tinderbox (UK).
As a test, I decided to wipe out my current installation, and just load the latest Nvertigo SM-T800 ROM and the very minimal nano Open GApps. I had to load a few minor things beyond that to get functional (KeePass Droid, Opera, MyBackup Pro, Wakelock Detector). I disabled all Google account sync items.
I disabled Trebuchet wake-ups, and set autostart off (Thanks, @fraser.dk)
I'm still seeing about 1% drop every 4-5 hours.
Nothing stood out from Wakelock detector. After 24 hours of the tablet sitting idle, the wakelocks were all less than 30 each.
Are you running a specific ROM or Kernel?
I am on the Stock UK v4.4.2 kitkat rom, I have never flashed though i am rooted.
If you are rooted, try the app in the link below, it link to XDA and you can download a version of cpu spy reloaded, it works great at spotting wakelocks it`s the only wakelock detector i use now.
I am running an Sony App that is supposed to stop all wakelocks, it`s in standby mode, you can whitelist apps if you like, I am not certain if it`s doing anything at the moment, you need root and exposed installed.
http://www.xda-developers.com/optimize-battery-life-with-this-useful-app/
A 1% drop over 5-6 hours is not bad.
John.
So i have an result on the Sony Battery App, I put my Tab S into sleep mode at approx 12:30AM it was at 69% , I woke it up at 6:50pm, it was still on 69% after 17hrs.
Click the link below, to see an screenshot of GSam Battery Monitor.

for me i have downgraded back to stock kitkat 4.4.2, debloated, rooted and xposed installed, and use powernap, i can use the tablet all day and still have between 45% - 60% battery left depends on if i am playing games or not... i have tried so many apps and custom roms in lolipop and none of them have good battery life....
PowerNap which is the Sony app i use, only reduce battery drain in sleep mode, by stopping all wakelocks, it does not reduce the power that games or other high drain app require, so how does you battery last longer, how much power were you loosing overnight when you tablet should have been sleeping it must have been immense.

I think I'll try going back to KitKat, and see how things go.
I have been frustrated on how fast the battery drains when doing minimal tasks, like reading an ebook (about 1% drain a minute).

I installed the Canadian stock KK ROM (T800XXU1ANJ6_T800XAC1ANI1_HOME.tar.md5) onto my US SM-T800, and it's boot-looping.

Out of the bootloop now, and setting up KK.
What do you do to prevent OTA updates? I have TWRP installed via the All-in-One Auto Root.
If you are rooted you will not get ota updates, if you are not freeze the updater an tab s owner did that with an app called "package disabler" it works without root but the free version keeps being removed from google play store, the full version is £2 (£1.50) just reduce.

@Tinderbox (UK) WHAT KITKAT ROM YOU ARE USING ????
stock UK kitkat rom v4.4.2, Lollipop has been out for my T800 10.5" for an couple of months, but it is full of bugs, and quite a few people have went back to kitkat.
Kitkat has been solid for me, I ran it for 164 days continually, I never rebooted or shutdown in that whole time, no problem at all.

Slow and overheating

I have an AT&T variant of the M8, but I've rooted it a few months ago and installed a stock HTC Sense ROM (without any AT&T bloat).
Starting this week my phone started working really slow, and also started to heat real bad. It was never like that (in the year I have it),
and it didn't start right away after I rooted and installed the new ROM. Also, I didn't install any app that could cause it, and I tried uninstall some apps anyway, as well as disabling all of my Xposed modules to see if maybe they cause this, nothing seem to work.
I'm really baffled as to why this happens, and I want to try everything I can before doing factory reset (which I'm also not sure about how to do this on a rooted device).
If anyone has any idea, I would love some help.
Much thanks!

Hi man,
Give a look at battery stats to see if there is an app that is draining battery.
I suggest you to download Gsam Battery monitor (and Gsam root companion too) from play store. It will give us more detailed informations about battery draining.

Can you post some screenshots of Gsam (Both main page and app usage detail), after a full battery cycle (from 100% to 10% for example)?
Also, can you download Wakelock Detector and post some screenshots of it? (WD it's an app that can help you identify If something is keeping your device awake).
Anyway, you can easily do a factory reset from recovery.
Hey, thanks again for the reply. The situation actually got fixed, sorry I didn't update.
I woke up yesterday to an update for the Google App, and since then my phone works just like it's good old self.
