When will the Dev edition get updated to 5.1? I thought the dev edition gets updated faster than the carrier editions.

Do you have to unroot to allow OTA´s on DevEd? Thanks in advance.

No the RUU is not up yet
Just flash the 1.32 RUU and check for updates. It worked fine today
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
I did same, flashed the most recent RUU and did the OTA.
Is there any reason to not accept this update? I haven't modified mine yet, but I want to root and go to CM later on.

i would say yes update ur phone, camera improvement is kinda big tho in low light its still crappy. overall its getting better
I'm not noticing camera improvements but I am noticing a big increase in performance. However, here's a fun bug: I keep waking up to it charging to only 78% or so. When I unplug and plug it back in, it starts charging higher. I've never seen a bug like this before, and it could make this unusable for me.
Also, I thought s-off just unlocked the bootloader, which is the whole point of the Dev Edition. So shouldn't that be unnecessary?

What charger are you using? I found that with an older charger that worked fine on my M8, I had weird charging issues since upgrading to 1.40 firmware. Updating to 2.7, and now 2.8, firmware fixed these for the most part, but still don't get a good full charge on that old charger. On the charger that came with the M9 seems to work just fine.

Those are two separate things...unlocked bootloader lets you flash custom recovery (TWRP) and therefore root and install custom ROMs, provided they work with your device's current firmware.
S-Off lets you flash new firmware as soon as it's released rather than wait for your specific carrier to release an OTA. S-Off also lets you change your device's CID and MID, so you can convert your device to developer edition, international, etc. Also with S-Off you can do other things like change your software status in bootloader back to "Official" after it gets changed to "Modified".

It sounds like there's no reason to get S-Off on the Dev Edition then, since I'm not going to want to flash a a carrier-specific firmware, and I don't need to change the status since HTC isn't going to deny warranty service because of modified software.

When I had the issue changing to the stock charger worked for me.
With S-Off you could have flashed the leaked 2.7 firmware a couple of weeks before the official 2.8 was released. You can also change your device status in bootloader back to "Official" from "Modified".
Other than that, if you're capable of returning your device to stock system image so that you can get OTA updates, there's not much of an advantage.
Other advantages of S-Off include the ability to return the device to 100% stock and the ability to use this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/sim-unlock-method-t3143333) to sim unlock.
So what's easier: getting S-Off or returning to the stock system image?

I've never returned to to stock using the system image. I always just run an RUU because i don't keep much data on my internal storage.
S-Off is pretty simple. Just root, download the sunshine apk and run it. after a few reboots, you're good to go.
So, having said that, I would tend to think they're about the same degree of difficulty.

Just whatever you do, DON'T take any OTAs!

Basically, it is technically possible to turn a phone S-ON with an OTA. I don't believe it has ever been done however.

I was one of those worried. The only reason I had asked is because if I sent my phone in to get S-Off (which I'm pretty sure I will) and development never really takes off after that, I don't want to be stuck on 4.2.2 for the entirety of my time with this phone. I wanted to know if I COULD take that OTA at some point without bricking the phone. I was told if I changed the CID back to VZW__001, then I wouldnt brick if I did an OTA...

The fuss is if your phone is ever turned back to S-ON after having been S-OFF, there is a high chance that it will instantly brick itself if you have loaded unsigned firmware onto the device.
If I go S-OFF, proceed to unlock boot loader, install clockwork mid recovery and just debloat my phone or flash a ROM, I should fear bricking if S-ON is switched back on?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but no, no worries with a custom ROM and recovery. Only for unsigned firmware, something like a custom hboot for example.

This is correct. If you flash an unsigned HBOOT and the flag goes S-ON somehow, the phone will refuse to boot because of the failed security check on the HBOOT. Besides that you're fine.

If it is a true developer edition, you might try backing up, running one of the Developer Edition RUU's to get back to 100% stock, and then see if you can get the OTA update. If this was a conversion, make sure the CID/MID are correct (which requires S-off).

InsertCoin is a custom ROM and not stock. So you need to return to a stock ROM to install OTA.

1540 is US Dev Edition, and the OP has Euro DE. The RUU likely will not run with incorrect CID, MID. And not sure this is the stock baseline he would want to be on.

Don't know where you obtained that info, but its false. S-off is not needed to install any ROMs.
If the phone is a demo unit, you should have stated that right away in your top post. On a previous HTC device (One X) I believe the demo unit was very difficult, if not impossible to make fully functioning. But no idea if the same is true for the M8 demo unit you have.

As I just said in my last response, you do not need S-off to flash any ROMs. If you want help, you need to start actually paying attention to the help that is being given to you. You are also making it very hard to help you, by not giving enough info, and just leaking it out little by little.
You say you can't flash any other ROMs, but that isn't enough information. What happens when you try to flash? Does it fail with an error message? Or flash successful, but doesn't boot? What other ROMs have you tried?
If you want to return to stock to receive OTAs, you will need to find and flash the appropriate nandroid and stock recovery for our CID. Stock backup collection can be found sticky at the top of the General section. There are also various guides on how to return to stock, if you need them just search.

Hey guys,
I've been searching but couldn't find anything that really helps with my problem. I bought an HTC One M8 last year, it was supposed to be unlocked from factory but when it arrived it turned out it was an unlocked AT&T model. Anyways so I tried to root the phone but it was already rooted and running a TWRP (I don't know how this happened as the phone was sealed when I got it) I have no problem with this but as the phone is rooted and doesn't have the stock recovery I can't get any OTA and I'm still in 4.4.2. I was wondering if any of you guys could help me update my device to stock 5.0.1 without flashing a custom ROM.
Thanks

First off, there is no stock 5.0.1 for the AT&T version yet. There isn't even a 4.4.4 released yes (although it might be anytime soon).
Further, you aren't going to receive any OTAs since you aren't connected to the AT&T network. Some folks not specifically familiar with AT&T will disagree, saying the OTAs will come over WiFi even if not connected to the specific carrier. But AT&T is pretty unique in this regard (well, maybe other carriers in the US do it too, but not WWE versions).
You can download an official RUU to upgrade to 4.4.3. Then wait for RUUs to be posted for 4.4.4 and/or 5.0.1. That is all you can do at this time without s-off. With s-off, you can convert to any version you want, and get official OTAs that way (such as convert to WWE version), or run the US Developer's Edition 5.0 RUU.

Nope, your second option won't work. You need firmware on your phone that is compatible with 5.0.1, otherwise WiFi will be broken, and.or extreme long boot times (>10 minutes). And the only way to update your firmware is with s-off (until AT&T releases more updates).
So really, if you want to update now, your only option is s-off.
Ok dude, thanks for your help. I guess I'll have to s-off

If you want to update now, that is what I suggest. I don't see LP coming to AT&T for another month at least, and it might be even longer than that (months). We're still waiting for 4.4.4.
Be sure to check bootloader and confirm if its s-on or s-off (says one or the other near the top of the hboot screen). Since it was already rooted and bootloader unlocked, who knows, you might have lucked out and gotten a phone that is already s-off as well.
Yeah and like you said if I'm not connected to the AT&T network I might never get the update so it is the only option. BTW I checked and it's S-On =(
Thanks for your help.
IIRC on my m7 s off was required to be able to switch to stock GPE android. But I read somewhere google has no plans to make a play edition of the m9 so is it even worth waiting to do s-off on the m9 or just start flashing away with Roms?
Waiting because previously I didn't and wait and I remember it being a PITA to do s off if you were already rooted and flashed a rom
The s-off method will be sunshine.
It will cost $25 and will be simple... Your phone will need to be rooted I believe.
So... No. Dont wait for S-off... get your flash on.
S-off is really only needed if you wish to upgrade your firmware (recommended) without going back to stock and using the official RUU / OTA method.
After flashing custom roms, you should be able to s-off anytime when sunshine is released for the m9 without any major issues. The process should be no different on stock rooted or custom ROM.
Downloaded the sunshine app and it says the phone is compatible even though the site says up to 5.0.1 (I have 5.0.2). Seems like they got it... anyone used it yet?
Edit: nm. Found the thread that confirms s-off.

Sunshine s off works smoothly and is so easy to use great app well worth $25

yes u are correct, i must have been using a non signed or corrupt image, downloaded the developer edition recovery and that worked fine.

i think i will wait and stick to stock and keep the warranty intact for now until development becomes more mature.
just saw the M9+ feel a tad ripped off. The mediatek processor PRETTY MUCH MIRRORS THE 810!!!!! qhd screen and fingerprint scanner to boot
I am using custom ROMS with unlocked bootloader and S-ON. So what is the benefit of S-OFF ??

i think i will wait and stick to stock and keep the warranty intact for now until development becomes more mature.
just saw the M9+ feel a tad ripped off. The mediatek processor PRETTY MUCH MIRRORS THE 810!!!!! qhd screen and fingerprint scanner to boot

It's even changed coming from the M7/M8, they changed the way a few things work and it's thrown everyone through a little loop.
Your warranty will basically always be intact. They warn you that it *could* be voided when you unlock-- Which stays "voided" even if you go back to stock. HTC always seems to honor the warranty if it actually is due to a manufacturer defect.

You can get rid of that red text on boot-up that says it's for developmental purposes only.
You could make your device any version(carrier > WWE/Dev)
It's just a nice thing to have.

and this is my main question is all the WWE custom roms that are made are already compatible with us carriers versions of the m9 without us having to s-off and change firmware.
so whats the reason to soff and change firmware when all wwe custom roms are already compatible?
For example to be simply able writing into aboot LOCKED instead of RELOCKED.. or full transformation into another region ROM capable taking the intended OTAs.. and many other things, Bro!

I came from a nexus 5 so dealing with these different ROM variants is new to me. I have an at&t m9 and do I need to s off and change my super cid before flashing one of these Roms? Also to be able to get another region ota will that change my radios? The reason why im asking is would I loose my LTE from at&t?

You can flash any rom simply by being unlocked with a custom recovery. Most of the GSM roms are compatible with every carrier. I know there were some data issues at first(Mainly not having the correct APN's), but they all should be worked out by now.
Should note: S-off is not needed to have a custom rom. It's only needed for those users who want a little *more*

So if I wanted to update the firmwares is as easy as replacing cid with 11111111 and can I update parts of the firmwares... I don't want to lose my at&t LTE

hboot? am i missing something?

I got the same message when using fastboot in the WHITE bootloader screen... you need to be in the BLACK download screen and then the fastboot recovery works fine.

You won't lose your LTE, you will just lose their pre-installed apps and bootup-logos. Everything will work fine. SuperCID (11111111) to flash developer RUU is what you get with S-OFF, that plus custom pre-boot logo, and ability to return to true-stock without it saying "modified" or "re-locked".
Do you think anyone will ever make a free one down the road, or should I just pay the $25 now?
HTC M9u .. CID 621 (Taiwan)
Software is currently 2.10.709.1
I recieved the OTA but I can't install it, it keeps coming back with an error
I just want to get rid of the root really and have the stock back so I can update to Android M smoothly. I have been searching all over XDA/Reddit and tried various methods but they all failed.
This post is my last call for help really before I give up.
I am not a developer but I am great at following steps and have been on these forums for quite a few years now. will appreciate any help I can get.
Get s-off?
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Is S-off required to flash 6.0 ROM.
There are so many different instructions out there. Very confusing even for me as someone who has flashed ROMs for years.
without OTA and official RUU, flashing firmware requires s-off
you can get it back to stock but trust me its not worth the hassle with s-on method... just fork out 25$ for sunshine and get s-off and problem solved... i know everyone wants the latest updates but trust me there is barely any difference in 5x and 6x it looks identical apart from a few new functions and incompatibility issues with some apps and xposed. if you dont want to go the s-off method than you need to find the ruu for your carrier.. unroot,, lock bootloader, and so on... its not worth the hassle...

Start in this thread and read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/stock-nand-backup-ota-update-collection-t3132698
You have to be 100% stock to take an OTA now. This is because of past bricks that resulted from people trying to do what you did, which was take an OTA while rooted. It's a safety feature HTC implemented.
I am not sure if there is a .709 RUU file you can flash, but if so, that will take you back to full stock. If there isn't, you have little choice but to get s-off and update your firmware manually.
Thanks all. The thing is I live in Sudan and have absolutely no access to online payment, so using that 25 dollars app is nearly impossible really. no other way of getting s-off ?

There are a couple of other methods, but they require expensive hardware you would also have to order online.
The sunshine guys are pretty flexible about payment methods, though I'm not sure they would be able to do anything for you. Worst you can do is reach out and ask: http://theroot.ninja
Why don't you just use one of my backups? There is no need for a RUU or S-OFF. Both, the backup and some instructions can be found in the google sheet that is linked in the thread @iElvis linked earlier. (You could simply use the link in my signature, too.) Or did I miss the fact that you're unable to boot to TWRP anymore?
@GODSPD : That's not really a good advice. Only because you can't see any changes doesn't mean that there are none. Fixes for security flaws like stagefright (just a random example) aren't visable at all. Not to mention that the battery life is much better on android M. Besides there is no need to relock. Only RUU.exe files require a locked or relocked bootloader if you're a S-ON user but most of M9 RUUs (except those for US carriers) are RUU.zip files which don't check the status of your bootloader. OTAs don't check that status, either, because if they would owners of the developer edition wouldn't be able to apply them.

visually the UI and system looks identical to me, im sure the updates do actually fix security issues, battery drains and other bugs thats for sure, but going from 5 > 6 a basic user wont even know the difference.
Correct me if im wrong, but OTA does check if the system is modified? better question ---> what does OTA actually check for in order to allow the update to be downloaded and installed?

They do look the same but that's no reason to recommend staying on android 5.

Yes, they check whether the system is modified (e.g. mounted as read/write) but the state of the bootloader doesn't matter. Further information about block-based OTAs can be found here.
