LG G4 green spot appearing in photos - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have had my H815 (Taiwanese version) for over a month now with no issues. Starting last night whenever I take a photo with the rear camera a green spot appears in the viewfinder. This green spot is also captured in the photo as per this sample
http://imgur.com/QGE1X0C
When I pan the camera the green spot disappears, but as soon as I hold it still, it appears again. No issues with the front camera. Any ideas what might be causing this? I updated to V10b last night, but I am not sure if it is related since I haven't seen any other reports of camera issues.
Hardware fault? Would appreciate your input.
Thanks,
Ray

Did you remove the protective film that was on the lens?
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk

Some cases have been proven to interfere with either the laser or the flash.

No not a protective film, has been working without issues for the past month .
Not the case either as it has been the same case and I tested taking off the case and cover too.

Have you tried covering up the ir sensor to see if that makes a difference?

The spot is in the shape of the autofocus laser window. It's probably something to do with that.

i have noticed the same thing but have noticed that there has been a recent update to the software. dont know if that is causing the problem

I've been experiencing the same thing just this past week now. It seems to come and go depending on how the lighting is. I thought it had something to do with the laser autofocus because it seems to be in the same area of the screen. It's kind of annoying trying to take photos with its awesome camera and have them ruined by this strange green dot. Hopefully it can be fixed. You're the only other person I know of that has had the same issue as me so far.

I have received my G4 one week ago (Switzerland) and I have this green spot that appears sometimes since today but I have not played a lot with the camera this week.
I have not the spot at the same place. Mine is near the flash.

I saw the green spot for the first time yesterday. Mine was very faint, and it didn't show up in the photo, only in the preview screen.

It's a ghost.

- Do other camera apps show the same green spot?
- Is it only in certain modes, like Manual, vs Auto?
- Does it appear in videos?
- Someone asked about the laser. You could try covering the laser's window, to see if anything changes.

- I have the same green spot with other camera apps
- I'm able to reproduce in all modes
- Same spot in videos
- I have removed the battery cover and I have covered the laser but no change.
The spot seems to appear depending the luminosity.

So after chatting with LG support they told me to do a hard reset. After I did that the camera still had the same green spot. Definitely a hardware issue. Took it back into Sprint and they gave me a replacement phone. The guy there told me that it's a manufacturer defect on the first batch of phones that is becoming more common. Got a new G4 today. Camera looks fine now. We'll see how it holds up.

now imagine you had unlocked the bootloader and removed the warranty ....

green dot
its really annoying this issue. i have contacted lg and they have send my phone away to repair the camera. i thought it was a software issue tho, because it happened just after and update. but lets hope this replacement camera fixes it. i have not seen this issue reported anywhere else than here.

Lg has got back to me and said that my phone needs a new main board.

Green blob
I've been dealing with this for about 2 weeks. First noticed it while taking a picture of the sunset (right around when I got the new update). Showed up again today when the I was trying to take another picture outside. Seems to only do it when the sun is around and my phone is running a little warm. So annoying. Definitely ordering a replacement, because this should be covered under warranty.

I didn't have any issues with this green got untill I flashed the PR verison of the ATT's rom. I'm hoping this is an easy fix of just replacing the camera. I have an LG g4 coming work for a replacement and I can harvest the camera out of the device and replace mine.

Replaced out the physical camera with another from another device and the issue was was resolved.

Purple tint/noise on camera

Has anyone else noticed the infamous purple noise problem on their Verizon Ones in low light? There's a giant thread about it here in the international variant's section. It gets especially bad when you take a picture in total darkness or cover the lens entirely. If your phone has one of the defective sensors, the whole screen will turn bright purple.
Also curious to see if there's a certain batch of camera sensors behind this. If you have this problem, could you browse to /sys/android_camera/sensor and post the text inside? Mine says "st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-05-03".
Before anyone suggests that this is a software problem, there are a quite a few units that don't exhibit this issue and show perfectly black images in the dark, so I'm more inclined to believe this is a hardware defect.

I have the same problem. I am determining if I should bother replacing it. I have to decide by tomorrow. I am currently unlocked and don't know if it bothers me enough to lose that right now.

Wow, that sucks.
I'm considering the same thing, though I'm not facing such an issue. I want to know if this camera problem is widespread to see if it's worth exchanging; it would be awful to go through the whole exchange process and wind up with the exact same problem on the replacement. And it would especially suck to lose your bootloader unlock for nothing...

My dad also has the HTC One from Verizon (got it a week later). His camera exhibited no such issues. I am going to try messing with his again tomorrow.
Its definitely a widespread issue though as you can see on that XDA post. I've also been following that since I got the phone. There is someone who thinks it might be a software issue and can be fixed by flashing libs. He is working on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45158495
I am just afraid of returning it and getting another headache such as dead pixel(s), chassis gaps/scratches, or anything else like that. I am trying to determine if I could live with it. I don't take many low light shots, but it will suck when I do.
When did you get your phone? It sucks that I have to decide by tomorrow!
EDIT: My camera pretty much does the same thing as shown in this pic (For others who may not be aware what we are talking about)

I got the phone about a week after release. Not sure that means much though, they seem to be randomly using old leftover parts to build the phones (according to the serial number, mine was built in July).
Can you post a picture of the purple stuff? I've seen other threads on this - in one case it did look like classic low-light issues that plagued certain Dincs, but another guy's pictures seriously did not look like digital noise to me - looked like an oily smear, maybe a manufacturing defect.
st vd6869(1.0) cinesensor 2013-06-20
Mine doesn't have the issue and it was purchased in the release day.
I had this same problem. I went in to verizon and showed the guy and we went through 3 replacements before he swore it was a software issue. Then I showed him that covering up the camera lens on their display model showed a plain black screen, while the replacements were showing that purple/pink tint. Here's an album with a couple of pictures of what it looks like.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m93o47ugxapos4v/hB6YN6kw-n/HTC One
My camera does the same.
I took it to the VZW store today but didn't have my ID nor did I bring the box with me.
Planning on going back tomorrow.
They told me they'd replace the phone for me so we'll see what the new one does.
Will report back!
BTW, nice car Frankie1588 if that's yours
Mazda RX-8?
For reference - here's a pair of low light shots, one with night mode on and one without. Definitely worth replacing because this phone sees better in the dark than I do, and that's pretty cool - this scene is nowhere near as bright as the pictures make it look, and night mode gets rid of speckling artifacts entirely.
So just going into the Verizon store, you guys were successful in getting replacements? How hard was it to sell that the phone had an issue?
guess I'll test the camera as soon as fedex drops off the phone tomorrow. I'll just call if its bad and make them overnight me a new one.
so if you take a shot in low light without the flash on, and it comes out fine, your camera is ok?
sorry just trying to see if mine if effed.
I help the lens cover and got purple, but when i shot in dark (under my bed) with and without flash, they came out normal?

I just went into the store today and they took my word for it when I described the problem.
Said they have been having a lot of people come in for the same reason.
Since I used another line's upgrade they said I couldn't swap out in the store.
But because of the device still being under warranty, they're shipping me a new one
And I just have to ship my current one back. I seriously hope this new one doesn't have
the same problem.

I got mine with the Edge program (don't judge me), and they were very easy to deal with in store. I just told them that it's an awesome phone, and the camera wasn't working. I showed them that it wasn't working by just covering the lens with my wallet. It showed that pink/purple tint on the screen. We went through three phones before we found one that didn't have that when covering the lens. I would definitely take yours back because the lens, when not taking in any light, should be completely black.

I got mine via edge to, 5 months after getting the note 2 on my upgrade. I'll either pay it off or trade it in at half paid off.
I think some of y'all might be mistaken on the camera.
You need to take a picture in pitch black room, not just cover the camera with your finger. Mine was able to draw light in through my finger, but when I went into the bathroom with the lights off, I got a solid black picture.
Just like a flashlight shines red through your finger, so to some extent can natural light.

I completely agree about not covering it with your finger, light still gets in. You can definitely find an object to cover up the lens, though. The display model at the Verizon store was black when covered with my wallet, but my phone was showing that tint when covered.

then I would definitely get a replacement. Mine was solid black. Also don't have any gaps along the top, or scrapes, imperfections that I can find.
Only thing I noticed was the white band at the top was not quite flush. Have to really look to notice. I'm considering myself lucky.

[Q] Weird artefact appears on back camera images. Any ideas?

I've heard about the purple tint, scratches and so on, but couldn't find any other examples of the weird artefact my M8 started to display on the bottom-left part of the photos a few weeks ago. It wasn't dropped or anything - this has just suddenly appeared one day.
Has anyone encountered stuff like this?

It's no sticker. The camera has been reset, cache has been cleared, the artefact is there. It disappears from view when I zoom in, and changes shape when I use filters. Don't think it's software.

If you're sure it's hardware, can't do anything else except having it repaired, right?

You're being a bit condescending. I have recognized that I'm not an expert by coming here and asking a question, no need to drive this point further. That said, it's not as simple as "hardware issue = send for repairs". Stuck pixels on LCD monitors sometimes can be fixed. Camera sensors can sometimes be told to disregard faulty data. I'm looking for knowledge, not snark.
To me, looks like some sort of debris, possibly caught between the outer camera "glass" (probably plastic, based on how easily a lot of folks have scratched it) and the actual lens of the sensor itself. I can see a couple specks of dust caught like this on my phone when it was brand new (out of the box), but fortunately in my case they do not appear in photos. You would think the assembly of these devices would happen in some type of dust-free environment. But unfortunately, this is obviously not the case.
If I am correct (that its some kind of dust/debris), I don't think there is much you can do about it without taking the phone apart, or at least the outer lens (if that even comes out by itself).

But,i will check this again when the phone gets warm....
This happens to LCD panels, it could be a one off due to heat etc, or it could be the sign of a faulty panel.

If it is glue, it cam be solved, by putting the phone under UV light or under the sun for some time, and it will go away. Google it.
If this does not solve your problem, look for a replacement.

Hm. A couple of days I think. But I can't tell you exactly. It just disappeard after a while.
I'm pleased yours disappeared. Mine which is identical in both the place and shape has been on my G3 since I got it back in July.
It still gets darker the longer you have heat build up on the screen and when it's cooled down its faint again.
i dont have the same luck as you guys mine are getting bigger and darker i think i have a bad lcd DAMN i really love this phone.
Same issue here. Same color, same location, same size. Mine is invisible when the phone is cool. But when the phone heats up, the yellow is very visible.
Sorry guys, I forgot to come back here with an update.
Mine eventually disappeared last week after nearly 3 months.
I believe it is the glue.
Someone told me to try leaving the phone under UV lighting. I left mine in direct sunlight for when it was not being used. Seemed to cure it in a few days.
yellow spot all of a sudden!
I've updated my phone to lollipop v20e a couple of days ago. Today I noticed this little yellow spot in my phone. Coincidence or not I began to use NFC TAGS early this morning, can this be related using the NFC TAGS and having this function enabled?
yellow screen marks
I bought my LG G3 on the 20/07/14 and after 5 months of use I have a long yellow thick line across the top left of the screen. What makes this even more concerning is my cousin bought the same handset a week before me and his now also has a thick yellow line on the screen. There is nothing you can do to get rid of it and it is more pronounced against a white background.Looks more like screen burn. Both my cousin and I have contacted LG and we are having to send our handsets to them for repair.
I have never experienced this issue with any other handset i have owned. I was unhappy that i had the issue but even more pi$$ed off that my cousin has the same thing happening which tells me either it was a huge coincidence or that these things are not fit for purpose and more and more will be going wrong in the near future.
My handset has been well cared for and never dropped. I am a moderate user so this was even more of a surprise. While the LG is getting repaired I am using my Sony z2 work phone as my personal for now and I don't think I will be swapping back when I get my LG back.
Good luck to anyone who has this issue. My concern is the same thing will happen again and then it will be my problem as it will be outside of warranty.
Juan
i have it too in the up-right corner of the screen and it doesn't disappear... it just get darker with hot screen and softens when it cools down
Left-top corner
I also experiencing this issue for 2 months now. its a strip. and its getting longer day by day. once i tried screen burn app and 8 hours continuously screen on resulted in heated display. then, when i press that line temporary it disappears. so obviously its the glue. i'll try the direct sunlight thing. hope it'll resolve this case. it's really annoying
Thanks for the tips :fingers-crossed:

After 6-7 months of usage, same thing, in same place (upper right corner, don't dissapear - only getting bigger and darker on hot screen).
Took my phone to local warranty service, and after 1 week got call from this service - they told me, that service is REJECTED, because phone had physical damage! (WTF?!?!?!?! i haven't dropped it, and there is no crack's/spots of damage on phone!).
After telling them all this, and proposed that it may be glue, or faulty LCD/Overheat - they told me that LCD have crack from back side (?!?!?!LOL!?!?!?!).
Now i'm stuck deep in *ss, and don't know even what to do....
Anyone of you got solution to this problem?
Maybe contacting LG representives directly will help to solve this case?

Rear camera not focusing

My problem is exactly what's written in the title. I don't know what happened but all of a sudden the rear camera stopped focusing all together! Goes without saying that I'm pretty upset about it. I did do some mods to the camera that I found here, 1080 60 FPS mod. I don't know if that had anything to do with it. It was working perfectly for a week after.
Is there any way to know for sure if it's hardware or software related? I tried restoring from LG Back-up to a time when the camera worked but that didn't fix it. I'm not sure LG Back-up saves anything related to the camera besides maybe the apk. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I want my camera working again so bad!!

Have you tried going into manual mode and adjusting the focus? Just wondering if manual focus has any affect at all, even if it isn't focusing properly.

Yeah I tried and it doesn't seem to do anything. I also noticed my front camera doesn't focus either. I can't remember if it ever did though. Can you check to see if yours does? When I tap to focus the front camera I see a blue box on the screen but it never turns green or changes focus. Front pictures seem to be more or less in focus though.
Sent from my VS986
The fact that the front camera doesn't focus either makes me think it's more software related than hardware. I might try doing a factory reset and seeing what happens.

there's no focus in front camera just a blue box, also it may be stupid but check if the lens is clean, a smudge on the lens can cause the cam to lose focus

You're correct. I checked on my G2 and found it does the same thing. Just a blue box. Well back to thinking it might be hardware. I ordered a new rear camera module. Hopefully that fixes it. I did drop my phone before I started having this problem so maybe I damaged the camera, even though everything else seems to be fine.

Replaced the rear camera today. Found a stock replacement on Ebay for $13.95USD. I'd like to comment on how easy it is to replace parts in this phone! I love it! Compared to the G2, with its multiple boards, antenna wires, and already stressed ribbon cables, this job was a breath of fresh air!
Anyway everything is working perfectly now! So mods can delete this post to avoid clutter or you can leave it as a warning maybe? I dropped my phone from a height of probably 15 inches, even with no visible external damage (thanks to bumper case), the camera was damaged.

Anyway everything is working perfectly now! So mods can delete this post to avoid clutter or you can leave it as a warning maybe? I dropped my phone from a height of probably 15 inches, even with no visible external damage (thanks to bumper case), the camera was damaged.

Did you have to update any software after installing the new camera? I'm having the same issue with the camera focusing after a drop but when I installed the new camera the phone wouldn't recognize it...
Had to reinstall the faulty camera again.. I'm not sure if the site I bought the replacement part from sent me a bad part or if there's a step I missed.
I had the focus problem, on the back camera only when in landscape mode...strange right? I tried literally everything to solve a possible software issue with no luck...how did I finally solved it? Replacing camera module. Look no further..

Camera focus problem

My op3 camera suddenly failed to focus. It was running good for 3 months before. It has no drop or any physical damage. The phone is in very good condition. I tried to reset the ROM, use other camera apps, but the same.
Now file a RMA ticket, but no one pick it up.
How many of you encountered the same camera issue, when it was and how to u fix the problem

Same problem for me, I just submitted a ticket on Oneplus support :/
I'm having the same problem, really annoying. But however sometimes it works, not perfect though (flickering and kind of refocussing all the time).
I've found a YouTube-Video showing how to fix this issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCBMKWImCzA
Check his channel to find before & after fix videos.
I'm going to try it tomorrow when my needed tools arrive. Gonna post my results here.

So it's me back again, have just tested this method seen in the video.
And against my expectations it actually worked!
It's pretty simple and can save you a few op3-less weeks due to sending it back.
But you should / must have those tools like that screwdriver.
+1
The camera focus on my 1+3 was steadily getting worse. So bad that I could not take any images at all without them being blurred.
RMA for a repair from 1+ website, Tuesday, picked up Wednesday, with them on Thursday. Going through the checks ATM. Nice fast turn around. Hoping it gets repaired next week and I get it back Friday. Doubt it though,as some of the time scales I have been reading online state 3-4 weeks.

Can you check if OIS is functional after that "operation"?

In warranty is free, use the ticket facility on the oneplus website. There is a RMA request section.

But why not send it back. You have just voided the warranty and can no longer send back to base under warranty for a repair. So saving a week or two is actually a bad thing to do if you get another issue.

Sup,
Thanks for the video - I'm having absolutely the same issue (screen tearing, glitching (like in your video)), but for the most annoying part - time to time unable to focus. It feels like you need to hit a phone with a finger so "stuck" camera could start focusing on something.
So from my understanding - OnePlus 3 smartphone has a camera module with hardware stabilization (not software)? If so, it got broken and is not working (as you mentioned - steadily getting worser and worser). I believe there 2 possible fixes:
1. Get a camera module replacement from ebay or any other online shop and fix it yourself:
Proper solution to fix a broken part.
Smartphone will work as it used to be
It costs money and forces you to wait for camera module to arrive.
2. Apply a fix demonstrated in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCBMKWImCzA
Looks like hardware stabilization wouldn't work anymore (really).
It faster, dirtier and cheaper solution rather than changing camera module.
It's free
So what happens under the hood all I see is that you apply a piece of iron metal (do not be confused, not a piece of paper) near the camera module (the type of metal which is being pulled by magnet). Camera inside the camera module will be pullet by metal (magnetic power) and it will be steady + somehow focus starts to work.
Also, for your reference, I just took a picture after applying this fix to my smartphone - can you see where I got that piece of metal from? Yeah - from the freaking pen spring by cutting part of it using pliers!

I've ordered camera module from ebay and replaced by myself. I confirm it's hardware related. And that camera module doesn't cost much by the way! Optical stabilisation is back!
Tried placing two staples in that gap and taped them in. Camera focuses correctly now, but it has a shake causing blur. Buying a new camera and toolkit off amazon for $13, will report back when installed.
My camera is now taking blurry photos. Will have to order a new camera module once back from holiday. Not happy that most of my photos on holiday are blurred.

Could you give link to the ebay which module worked for you? and what procedure did you use it to replace?
Now replaced my rear camera and seems to have fixed the blurred photos. Will have to test it for a few days. Straight forward to replace the camera.

Ifixit website. Has the video instructions and links to rear camera and the tools you need. All in around £14 with tools and postage. I opted for 10 - 20 day postage option and received it after 6 days. About 30 minutes to replace rear camera.

I replaced the camera after waiting 20 days to receive it from China. All went well with removal and installation, but alas still no focus when I booted the phone up. I read on this thread a comment from Erika snorkeling from June 18th (I believe) about taking the coil off the spring from a pen. I installed it, taped in place........and VOILA!!! It worked like a charm. Close up focus and pictures taken outdoors were perfect - even when blown up the detail was back. Just thought I'd comment on such a fantastic, but simple, fix. Kudos.:good:
