I like the stock interface and all I really want to do is be able to get Netflix to work with Chromecast and be able to side load my Humble Buddle apps without getting a parsing error. Basically I want "stock plus" set up, with stock interface plus the power to do/install what ever I want. I thought rooting and getting Google Play Store installed would fix things, but Netflix still won't chromecast and my apks from Humble still kick back parsing errors. Browsing the faq thread I saw info about MoDaCo
Q23: I like the stock OS but is there an easier way to install Google Play, Google Apps, Disable OTA updates, change wallpapers, etc., rather than doing it manually?
Install MoDaCo while in recovery

MoDaCo is probably still fine, roms are often as much about taste as options.
I think it's unlikely chromecast will work with any stock kindle based roms, i suggest you ask in one of the custom rom threads like slimkat, CM11, CM12...

Thanks, I'll see if maybe I can throw on the latest CM, and then try to load the KF interface hack onto that.

i rooted,and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351283 i used vending 3.3.12,...i succes market installed..
but, every times running on message show `add on account on market`then disappear .. how download apk???
Since you're going through the trouble of trying to install the market manually (and the lack of specificity), I can only assume you're running the stock Amazon software. In which case, I would strongly suggest saving yourself a butt-load of trouble and flash the MoDaCo rom (you do have recovery installed, don't you? Gawd, I hope so)
MoDaCo is not much different from stock, except it has Google apps and Market pre-installed, and it's missing most of Amazon's "assume the position" software. Besides you'd be hard pressed to find a better "stock" experience anywhere else IMO.

A friend of mine has the original kindle fire which doesnt have built in vpn support out of the box (tun). He doesnt want to do the router trick and is interested in switching software. I have been toying about with various other android devices but not the kindle' so:
It seems cm doesnt support kindle?
If not what would be a good choice in a stable rom for a non tinkering guy?
Couldnt i just replace the kernel on the original software and get proper vpn support?
Any help much appreciated
Edit: forgot to ask - i read somewhere that switching software will result in no streaming from amazon. Is that correct? I am wondering how little i could get away with. My friend basically just wants to get vpn working and prrhaps also google plsy and netflix access etc he does not care for tweaking og newer rom features

Yup, you're right; streaming video from Amazon will be non-op if you flash another rom onto the Kindle. IMO, if your friend doesn't want to tweak and play with his Kindle all of the time, you're better off just rooting / dual booting. That way you can get the Google Play store on the Kindle and put whatever Android app you want on. The tutorial I used was from Liliputing, which gives you root, a recovery boot loader, and gives you the option to install the Google apps: http://liliputing.com/2012/05/how-to-root-a-kindle-fire-with-software-version-6-3-1.html
FYI the stock Kindle will allow you to install apps out of the Amazon store, so if you *really* don't want to fuss with it... Download the APK of the VPN solution you want to try, transfer it to your Kindle, and then install it. Easy peasy.
If you want to go all in on the latest / greatest Android O/S, I recommend twa_priv's CM10.1 rom; it's one of the most solid / feature full Jelly Bean 4.2 roms I've seen, and features Hashcode's very excellent kernal. It was one of the first that I tried and I always come back to it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051331
My mother's kindle keeps freezing on her for awhile now and now it seems to do it more and more. She said it froze up on her 3 times today when she was trying to read a book, and looking at fb another time. Her system version is 8.4.3_user_4308820. Anyone know any way to fix this? She doesn't have a warranty for it. Says silk has locked up.
Is the device running a custom or stock ROM? Is it rooted?

Stock. Not rooted.
Uh I may be completely off but my kindle seems to get slow and freeze up pretty bad when the sdcard is low on space, start to notice it when I get under a GB, I'd check that while your at it, keep looking for what other people say though.

I just check her storage and she has 11gigs still free. So I don't think low sdcard is the problem this time. I was hoping it would be something that simple. could rooting and a custom Rom be the best fix? are you able to still get books from Amazon and able to access your books you already have? all she wants to do is be able to browse the web, read books, maybe a game or two.
Since Silk is crashing or locking up, I would just install another browser and use that.
Dolphin, Firefox and Chrome are good alternatives.
If that doesn't work, I would just install a stock rom and wipe the kindle.
Alright will try that. Thanks.
Hi,
I have been reasonably happy with my Wildfire S, even though it was a little slow and clunky. I thought about rooting it, but never got around to doing it until yesterday. The reason for that is that Wunderlist, the only app I actually use has been updated and now supposedly needs Android 4.0+
That's not a big deal right? Just unlock, root and then flash a CyanogenMod based on an Android version that's high enough. To be honest it wasn's as easy as I imagined and it took me the whole day yesterday to read everything, select a ROM and manage to flash it correctly. The only problem: Wunderlist still doesn't run on it!
I have tried a couple of CM 10.1 versions, with various GAPPs builds, but Google Play still tells that it is not supported by my device. I have also downloaded and installed the apk from the Wunderlist website, but the app doesn't start :crying:
Can anybody help me? What is the problem here? Will an different ROM work? Is it impossible to install Wunderlist on WFS?
I have tried A LOT of To-Do Lists and I'm not willing to switch to anything else. If I can't get my Wunderlist on WFS, I think I'll a new phone.
PS: Sorry for the lack of links, but I can't post external links as a newbie
EDIT: So, I managed to install a CM11 ROM, using a more recent version of the ClockWorkMod recovery. CM11 is based on Android 4.4.4, which did the trick. I couldn't access Wunderlist via the Play Store though, but I could isntall it via the apk. My phone is a little slower than I'd like, but at least I have my Wunderlist
Hey, just wondering if anyone can help, for the past week I've been trying to fix a problem with my Fire tv and have tried various methods to fix this issue. Basically I use Sloane 5.0.5 r4 ROM on my aftv 2, it comes with super su and the root does work as superuser requests pop up to allow or deny. However super su doesn't appear in apps (the GUI management tool) when installed (tried various versions of supersu from 2.4 to 2.7) and I try to launch it, it just takes me back to the home screen. From googling I can see a few others have a similar problem, some people suggesting kingroot(not keen to use that as it doesn't give me the same options as super su) some suggesting rbox will make an update to sort the problem. Although not something I know is definite. The super su works and it's binaries as suggested earlier but the gui tool is nowhere to be seen. Even tried changing sloanes rom and replacing it with another supersu version but this hasn't worked. Just to add more details im running TWRP recovery also!
Thanks.

It's something Amazon does to Android and SuperSU being a system app. I noticed the same problem with the Play Store. You might be able to launch it while in an alternative launcher and/or using adb shell.
Run a adb shell and fire up this one
pm path eu.chainfire.supersu
Just to check the installation path
Hey rbox! Many thanks for your reply, and well done on your effort with this rom, can't fault it except for this minor issue. Been tearing my hair out trying to figure out exactly why it all looks fine and well but won't launch. I was thinking of trying to install play store using xposed, was looking at a guide online and wondered if it would open through play store. Didn't realise I could use another launcher with your rom though. Do you know if there's others you know that understands amazon devices to come up with a fix, update etc? seems like you're the only one to make a rom so far for the aftv so I'm guessing it'll take time until everyone fully understands amazon devices and apply similar Android based roms. Thanks for your advice.
Here's what the path came back as, I did notice there's two different locations for supersu though.
correct me if i'm wrong but as far as i know the supersu (the one that you just found) is the su binary but the GUI (which is responsible for the grant notification) is here: /system/app/Superuser.apk
I'm not 100% sure about it, so maybe someone could light up the dark
once sloane-5.0.5-rooted_r4 is flasheed can we update SU from play store?
Sure but you don't have to. Just take that one http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=eu.chainfire.supersu

My experience is with Firestick.
1) On main Amazon screen, go to the App line and look accros there.
2) Connect Wukong Remote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wukongtv.wkremote.client.en and you'll see the Apps selection at bottom.
I like to go into Supersu settings and the default to "Grant" and I like to turn off notifications.

Arghhhh. Think I've soft bricked my fire tv or worse! I was re flashing the rom and was cleaning the data before hand, I must of wiped the system and now I'm only seeing the amazon white logo when i turn it on... Tried to install recovery again since I can't even get into recovery but when going through preloader it eventually says error can't find target file. Tried to use fast boot but fire tv isn't connecting to try and install recovery etc that way! You guys got any ideas or have I totally broken the device? ???
Keep calm buddy, als long as the preloader is still working everything is possible. Did you try to Flash TWRP again?

Thank you so much! It saved the day! never will i ever be such a n00b and delete the entire system again. Also big thankyou RBOX for your guide and files to unbrick, they worked a dream. Everything is installed now, hopefully in near future someone manages to get SuperSu opening in the GUI lol im just happy I can actually use my fire tv again though!
