[Q] Car Dock Worth A Damn - Moto X Accessories

Does anyone know of a good car dock for the 2nd gen Moto X? I previously owned the Moto X 1st gen and had the official griffin car dock, which was the best car dock I have ever had. I have noticed that Motorola does not sell an official car dock for the 2nd gen.
Let me know what you guys have or do for using the Moto X 2nd gen in the car, Thanks.

Right now I use an iOttie OneTouch which I don't like much as it covers up the side buttons.
I think if I ever buy again I'm going for the Exomount Touch instead.

Simply push the phone against the red X, and the sides snap close and holds the phone in place. Then you attach the power cable.
This Sinjimoru dock looks pretty darn good, but covers up the headphone port on top.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MLZZ7QE
What is needed is this Sinji model, but with a "Y" top. You "dock" the bottom first, which swirvels, push down, slide it into place, and spring pushes up and locks the phone in place. To disengage, you do it in reverse. Push phone down, disengage from top, then pull up and away from plug. You can even add a "guide" to make the initial docking with power easier, but that's totally optional.

This is what I have and it work very well: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Universal-Windshield-iPhone-Samsung/dp/B00IACDALG
PS Just realized it covers headphone plug on Moto X 1-st gen but it is not important to me.

Car docks for Droid X

Have there been any pics released of the official car dock for Droid X? Or any other Droid X-specific car docks?
There have been. There were videos as well. I cannot remember where though. I want to know how it knows when it is plugged in and if this could be replicated so that I can use a cheaper dock...
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=droid+x+car+dock
lol at navychief52 I didn't know such a thing, i'm going to use it all the time now.
But yes it can be replicated, here's the new feature though that you loose by using a generic car dock. It has a built in charging port, which means you can just slide your phone into the dock and not have to wire up a charger to it too.
as for the part where you put it in and it automatically starts up the car app, all you need is a magnet, atleast thats how i found the last droid docks worked. I don't know what strength it has to be for it's magnetic sensor to trigger the app, but I don't think it has to be very powerful at all. But I would glue that to the back of your generic car dock and you should be good to go. I know thats what I'll be doing.

Ah thanks for that! I figured it would just be a magnet but wasn't sure. If I could find a dock with a nice beefy arm like the oem car dock then I would just use that. So far the only kind that I find are the ones that have a long bendable metal tube. Need something with more strength... To be fair I have not been looking too hard core yet.
I just do not like the idea of buying a dock for a device that I will probably not have a year later...
Besides the Droid X being unveiled today in New York, this car dock made an appearance as well.
can you keep the line in audio plug plugged into the car dock or do you need to plug it in manually to the phone everytime? I use a line in plug
I've looked at everything, but I cannot find an answer to this.

It has a cable loom on the car dock for the wire however it goes into the phone.
Only the USB goes to the dock.
They really need to figure out a pass through or something for these things.
At least the dock is very solid and easy to use. But agreed, would have been nice to plug jack into dock and dock have attached short cable to go into phone. So even if you have to plug every time, it is made easier.
Looks like I'll just get this bluetooth adapter for my car instead.
http://www.google.com/products?q=kensington+liquidaux+auxiliary+bluetooth+car+kit&hl=en&aq=f
Anyone know of something similar that plugs into an aux line like this one? I might get this, but I'm open to different stuff if it's better.

just ordered this: https://www.wiredforless.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SOUNDM2
when you check out, use the coupon code: WOOT for $20 off ($9.99 total including shipping)
can't beat that price and it looks like a pretty solid car dock. first review mentions that it is good with the Droid X.
thanks for the heads up! it looks pretty good! however, im concerned with the adhesive disk that is applied to our devices.... does it stick out... and would it affect cases and other things etc...
i honestly am not sure, but i ordered a ****ty $1 silicone case from ebay that i'll be using with the mount haha.
Silcon isn't that the soft cases? i'm not sure that would hold my phone tight enough, i drive a truck so there is lots of bouncing around. I think i'm gonna buy a cheep belt clip case, that way i can just clip the phone in and out.
so my mount came in literally 2 days after i ordered. ridiculously fast shipping; they must be located nearby. haven't installed yet but it's pretty small and unobtrusive. seems like a good buy thus far. the discs that stick to the back of your device (comes with 2) are a lot skinnier than i thought they would be. might just put it on my normal everyday case. i don't think i'll run into problems slipping it in and out of my project with the disc on the back.
I've ordered mine as well as ordering a cheep belt clip so i can snap it in and out. Too me the twisting motion (while awesome for the secure locking) seems a bit much for my lifestyle of always jumping in and out of my car.
Ill probably use the 2nd disc on the same clip so i can have landscape and portrait

Just ordered one myself. For $10 shipped, I figured I might as well give it a shot.
I got my "Slip Grip" mount in the mail today and for the $20 bucks it cost it is very much worth it.
The mount is VERY sturdy, seller shipped it same day too!! Check it out!
Only downside is it is just a mount, it doesn't have any plugs for power n such, but does leave all of the ports available if you had like a car charger or AUX cable running while it is in there.
Got the car mount from vzw today have to say it is bulkier than my Droid 1 mount, but that is expected with this phone. Looks good on the dash mount in an F250.

USB Cradle Dock with Battery Charger

My phone sits by my computer most of the time, and with my HTC Mogul, then HTC Touch Pro, then EVO 4G I've bought a combo cradle/battery charger. I haven't seen one mentioned available here for the Epic 4G Touch and I just found/bought one on eBay and thought I'd mention it for others interested in a device like this. Once I receive the item I can post a review if you guys would like.

This looks like the one I had for my Touch Pro 2... it worked nicely and was cheaper than the official docks.
I am interested in your impressions as well.
thanks
Question for anyone that has purchased this dock..
Have you been able to charge your phone with any type of case on it? Thanks.
Just a quick update. I got the charger, but I don't have an Epic 4G Touch yet. The first seller I bought the phone from ended up being from a scammer. I gave the dock/charger to a friend, and bought another one that's already here. I should have the Epic 4G Touch from another seller here by Tuesday and will post my impressions soon after.
Damn, sorry to hear that..
Ok guys...
Im also looking at desktop cradles and found this other one:
From an Amazon vendor:
$22 (includes shipping):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OTXKK4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3CZ5XR3PIAJMS
It's basically almost the same design as the one the OP linked to. What do you guys think?
I kind of wanted one that you could rest the phone in and charge it with a cover on, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

I think this one is better because you can turn your dock on its side like if you were watching Sprint TV...

This one looks nice, but some of the reviews for this brand (for other phones) mentions it covers up the speaker so when the phone is docked the sounds are silenced since the speaker is at the bottom. Although this may be true for all these 3rd party docks.
It's cool, Paypal resolution against the scammer just resolved today and they sided with me and already credited my PayPal account.
---
For that other cradle from Amazon, though you probably can put it on its side I'd be concerned with the side buttons/hitting the desk and possibly being pressed in, and possibly the device itself slipping out. The other concern I have with that model is that I can't clearly see the extra battery charger compartment. The one I got should accommodate extended batteries, but I can't tell on that model.

it looks like the one from Amazon just a different brand.. it also covers the speaker so I wonder if you can hear the alarms or music... there may be enough room behind the actual phone to allow the sound to be heard, but it doesnt look like it.
Quick first impressions:
* Feels solid and fits snugly, so pay attention when docking the phone in as it aligns only one way.
* When no battery is in the battery charging slot there's a LED that flashes crazy fast green/red which may bother some people. You can always cover it up with electrical tape. I don't notice it most of the time since my phone blocks the LED anyways when docked.
* A significant negative and quite surprising difference in the dock compared to the docks I had for my EVO 4G / Touch Pro and Mogul are that this dock only has one USB slot. So it either charges the battery and phone from a wall plug or it charges the battery and connects/charges the phone via your computer's USB port. My previous phone docks had 2 USB connectors, one for the battery and one for the phone. I haven't tried connecting this to my computer or charging an extra battery yet but I'm figuring trying to charge two things at the same time via one USB cable, especially when connected to a computer USB port would not be very efficient.
Update 12/09/2011: Argh, deal breaker, just got my Trexcell 3800mah Extended Battery, but because of the location of the battery contact on the battery and dock it won't fit, .
Killabee and talynone
that second black dock is the one I am interested in. my PRIMARY concern with docks that use the charging jack on the phone (whatever happened to dedicated dock "contacts" on phones Cheap SOB's)
is that I want the phone IMMOBILIZED while in the dock. ie I don't want to be able to TILT the phone forward while in the dock "stressing and breaking" the usb jack on the phone.
IE I want the dock to RESTRICT the movement of the phone to vertical only (insert remove dock connector type motion)
the first dock in this thread would NOT prevent the phone from tilting forward.
the second one I am not sure about. do those sides "wrap" around the edge of the phone enough to restrict its movement to a solid slide and NO forward slop?
Here is a video of what I mean. (its processing give it a few minutes to process)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhWtz5EU_Rg
nerys71,
I saw your video and can tell you that the phone in this dock is not restricted from tilting. So yes it will tilt while charging. I am talking about this dock:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005OTXKK4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A3CZ5XR3PIAJMS
ahh pity. I assume you have it? does the phone protrude past the front "AT ALL" in that dock? IE it looks like it would be friendly to modding it with 2 "lips" on the front to prevent the phone tilting.
Yeah I have it. It doesn't pertrude at all. The phone sits flush.

[VZW] My vzw g-nex car dock review

So, on my way to work this morning I was in my car fiddling with my phone while driving. Yes, I know i'm not supposed to and it's dangerous! But god damnit i'm used to having a car dock. Its not my fault vzw decided to release this...how should I put it big piece of fecal matter into the market.
Okay so long story short, I almost got in an accident because i was trying to switch songs in google music but b/c i have no car dock, I had to look down. I've lived the past 2 years with my og droid with the car dock. I really wanted to wait for something better, cause honestly without the 3 pin function built into the dock, i didn't want to spend this money. But i finally gave in due to my safety, and the safety of others.
Now here is my review:
Ill start with the good.
-The dock is extremely sturdy. I think once the phone is put into the holder, it will honestly never come out as long as you've secured the base correctly.
-The material that surrounds the phone is very nice
-It's easy to move the phone while its in the dock. meaning lets say my passenger wants to have a look and fool around with the dock, she or he can easily just pop that screen facing his / her way and tighten the bolt.
-It fits with the extended battery
Now the bad:
-This one is obvious. No 3 pin connection????? WTF ARE YOU THINKING VERIZON.
-The phone takes FORCE to put into the dock, and I mean with both hands. I am so gentle with my g-nex usually.... its almost like im molesting it trying to get it in the dock.
-NO charge / audio out on the base of the dock. Again i say, WTF ARE YOU THINKING VERIZON
-The part of the dock that surrounds the 3.5mm audio out jack DOESNT FIT bigger cables. Meaning, if you spent extra money to buy a good 3.5mm cable thats thick, it probably wont fit. I have a belkin pure a/v 3.5mm cable and it does not fit. Most likely will only fit regular sized 3.5mm cables
-Because the dock material is kind of...like rubber i guess? When you forcefully slide the phone in(you have to) it makes me paranoid about the volume / power buttons. To me, it feels like over 100 slide-ins, the keys would probably get damaged because of the force you need to use and how tight the dock fits.
Honestly, if the dock just had the 3 pin connection for audio out / charge i would rate the dock 10/10 for that alone. But because it doesnt, im giving it a rating of 3/10. I bought a gnex for the sole purpose of utilizing those 3 pins so i dont have to plug **** in every damn time i get in and out of the car. But for now, it serves its purpose as purely a phone holder.
Can you confirm that a car dock app doesn't pop up automatically? I use Car Dashboard Pro.
I can confirm...since it is merely a place to put a phone with no automatic port to plug into it technically doesn't even know it is in a dock.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I completely agree with your review--I ended up picking it up, strictly because I needed nav on a road trip...but still not happy about having to buy this thing.
Have you guys checked out the reviews for this thing on the Verizon site? All of the reviews are 1/5 or 2/5 stars (first review by yours truly)...yet somehow the overall rating is 5/5. Verizon should learn how to cheat at product ratings less obviously...

How do these compare to the HTC official speaker dock? As they can be had for around £41 if they are similar in terms of sound quality it might be better to get the official one for the pogo pin charging?

It's fine, just remember it's not a dock so it won't sync with anything. It plays music via Bluetooth, has a night light as well and charges phone when connected to dock.
As it's Bluetooth you can connect any Bluetooth device and stream your music, it's loud and sounds good for a mono speaker. Better than on board speaker. I do have a video but my upload speed is poor!
The Philips app is useless so I just connect straight via Bluetooth. I use it at night to charge my phone and as an alarm clock.
For the price it is really good, I was surprised by the sound it produces.

Ive done a little video for YouTube - please dont think i'm stealing any thunder here as thats the last thing on my mind.
However i do want to say a massive thankyou to mugglesquop for revealing this in the first place.
This has the benefit over the other Speaker Dock 'cr s650' in so far as the Philips can bu used with a multitude of phones now and in the future - as long as they have the mini usb ports on them.
Where as only the HTC one X will work with the 650 because of the pogo pins placement and if you upgrade your phone in the future unless its got the exact same layout as the HTC one X then the 650 will be redundant - the Philips though should be better value as even if you upgrade in the future the chances of your new device having a mini usb is high (higher than having the perfect placement of pogo pins i reckon).
EDIT - on a side note when i dock my HTC onto the Philips i have to remove my phone case as the charging port in the Philips wont quite fit snuggly enough to charge.
Soooooo anyone know of any decent gel, silicone, other HTC one X cases that are very thin (but offer protection) that would allow a fit that is more flush with mini usb chargers - thus charging my phone.
I have a MHL adaptor for my TV and on this too i have to remove my phone case otherwise the USB wont fit into my phone quite right - Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thanks for any suggestions
Excellent video mate I was having troubles capturing the volume but it is loud.
As for case I use a Tourmate case from obostore and it fits with it on, it is similar to the Rock sand cases which are popular.
For the price it's a decent little driver.

Alright mate, quick question. Did you manage to get the dock extension (little plastic thing) to fit properly over the usb so it was flush? I just got mine today but for some reason the dock extension doesn't go down low enough so the phone won't plug in properly, seems to be getting stuck on the little cogs used to raise and lower the height adjusters, would you mine uploading a pic of it?
Cheers
Daven
@daven
The cogs have got to be wound all the way to the bottom - the little attachment will only fit on the usb section in one way i believe - it goes on about 3/4 of the way and the last bit needs to be pushed with a little force to snap it into place.
Ahh thanks, I got it after applying a bit of force. I was worried about breaking it. Nice youtube video, the dock is brilliant, I've found it to work really well with the sony smart connect app (which I also use for my nfc tags). I've set it up to automatically bluetooth connect to the dock and launch dock mode when the phone is docked, and then play music for an hour when I wake up in morning. Sound quality is surprisingly impressive for something so small.
How did you find the official app for it? I found it to be a bit too cumbersome, so just uninstalled it.
I've frozen songbird and Fidelio using titanium back up and i'm manually turning on bluetooth on the HTC one X and using Power AMP as my music player. :good:
I thought for the first day that i was tied to just using the Songbird/Fidelio combo so went with this. :silly:
Came home from work today and started up Power AMP instead and it works brilliantly, you can even change the graphic equaliser and the Philips Dock adjusts too - perhaps this is a feature of all docks,im not sure as this is my first
Im trying to set up something with 'Tasker' at the moment to get the most out of the Dock, though i have got NFC tags too so might have a play later and see what i can come up with
Just purchased one of the Rock Quicksand cases as its very thin but theres still no way it will dock properly to the speaker dock and charge, even after pushing fairly firmly it wont click in so instead ive removed the little plastic adapter that clicks on the USB and now my phone sits just nicely.
Incidentally i tried to sit the HTC One X onto the USB without its plastic adapter but leaving an ordinary gel case on the phone but that wouldnt work so my best bet is to use the Rock case and remove the plastic adapter off the speaker dock.

Best Motorola Navigation Dock is Nokia CR-115

After buying a Skip accessory I put an old nokia CR-115 (+ HH-20 mount) to a very good use. Grip is perfect, camera and backside mic are not obstructed, Car Mode starts with the help of a small neodymium magnet (if you use one, make sure you mount it with the right polarity for Car Mode). Also looks very nice and clean, and finally initiated voice dialling starts in speaker mode.
Note: it will not work with a case, the space remaining when mount is fully open is at most 1mm, but since the top and bottom holders are made from rubber (and not foam), I'm sure you can figure something out.
How do I mount the magnet? I wanted to used my old dock from my iPhone 4. I used a Kensington Car Dock.
It looks like the attached photo.
Is it a dumb question when i ask you how you get the phone call app in landscape mode (on the last picture)? I have my moto x since a week and could not figure that out. Is it the car mode that makes it possible?

Yes.
You can try Car Home Ultra too, besides being a great car mode "launcher", it can force car mode on your phone.
