I just wanted to share my car install experience. Notice that I only used the holder portion of the mount, and I cannot swivel to landscape mode. This works for me since I already have built in Acura navigation, and I mainly use my Tbolt for streaming MOG radio which is portrait mode only. This install location works perfectly for lack of glare, cable placement, accessibility, and allows me to keep my focus on the road.
** note: I used an agressive mounting tape capable of holding up to 5lbs and dealing with high temperatures. This is available at Home Depot in the paint department for $4. I mounted the car holder directly to the fake black wood panel that has a glass finish gloss surface. PLEASE do-not blame me if you ruin the $95 panel should removal cause the fake wood to crack, etc.
1- The car mount is at Verizon stores & online part # HTC6400MNT for $29.
2- The micro USB port on the mount has two metal dimples that are evil and require WAY too much force to install & remove the Thunderbolt. I recommend using a single edge flat xacto blade to remove as much of the dimples as possible. Once removed the Thunderbolt slides on and off the mount properly.
3- ******* Before mounting!!! Attach the micro USB power cable & route the audio cable and choose a location that allows the mount to remain flat against the surface & gives the audio cable enough play to be connected & removed.
4- Prep both surfaces with alcohol to remove any surface contaminants.
5- Remove the double side adhesive mounting tape covering and carefully align and lightly press the mount on ONE tiny leading edge only... allowing you to slightly adjust alignment prior to fully pressing the mount into place. **It's strong adhesive and you only get one shot so be careful.
This process has worked perfectly for my needs, and the mount is rock solid. I have a full view of the screen from my seating position, easy reach to the display, and as much as I wish the micro USB port on the mount passed audio.. it's really not a big deal dealing with the audio plug.
I hope this helps and streaming 320Kbs from MOG's 10 million database of music over 4G is such a thrill. They currently have a major Android player bug but an update will release soon.
Wow.. looks good!
Dude MOG on Android has sucked since day 1. Hopefully they will get it straightened out one of these days, I gave up.
Nice job - looks very similar to mine except I went horizontal down by the AC controls (Explorer) and switched to the Google Car Home - it is sweet. I like the 90 degree cable - where is it from?
6 foot 3.5mm male to RCA male cable
I got very lucky and found this at Radio Shack... even the inept sales guy kept saying it didn't exist... then I located exactly what I needed on his rack It might be easier to find it online & get it shipped. If I can pull the package out of the trash I'll replay to this thread with the Radio Shack part number.
The clearance between the car mount plastic & the 3.5mm jack of the Thunderbolt is very tight. Fortunately this cable has a thinner section closer to the base of the metal jack allowing it to clear the plastic of the mount.
Re: MOG... yes I'm relaying email to their Android staff daily. Fingers crossed as the audio quality & features are much better than Pandora One.

It's the one made by Google, it's the best - very customizable. You won't be able to find it via market on your phone since it is "incompatible" because of stupid sense. Just download the apk and side load via USB or dropbox. when you choose the car panel app it will prompt you for which app to use - choose the Google one and set to default. Then when you put the bolt in the dock, it will launch google car home.

Thanks I'll track one down. I have a regular coil cord but want to hide the aux cable like I did with the power cable. Plus it sticks out just enough to hit my knee - the 90 degree will do the trick though.
Radio Shack 3.5mm to RCA Cable
Goto their website & search for 42-492 and it should come up.
No matter what phone dock I get, I always adapt it to a vehicle specific mount. I hate suction cups and vent mounts
I have my set up nearly the same only in the left bottom corner of my windsheild... I long ago hard wired a dual cigarette charge port to the inside of my dash and have routed power to a couple differnet devices and places using standard car chargers and makes the install seemless...
The next step in my install is to find a 4 conductor 3.5mm male to 2 female 3.5mm adapter or make one myself (one mono and one stereo on the female ends) and hardwire that to a mic element I have and the rear aux input of my car stereo... hopefully this setup will yeild much better speech recognition and usable docked speakerphone calls without buying an expensive bluetooth setup.
nice looking setup
I'm thinking about getting this mount.... What's your thoughts OP? Can you charge the phone? Looks like the bracing covers the USB input.
Kudos for a job well done!
Definitely saving this thread. That's a genius idea. I'll be doing the same with my car soon I'm sure.

Hi Guys,
Excuse my brief hijacking of the thread, but I feel this relates to the discussion.
I have recently released a new media player for Android, and the focus is on easy browsing, huge album art and a "no-look" playing screen that let's you control the functions with gestures. There is even an option to keep the screen on if connected to power. Works great in the car.
It's called simplePLAY, and you can see it running on my Thunderbolt here:

Sorry for the interruption.

i have the universal car kit from verizon, and i got it mounted in front of one of my air vents so i can keep the phone cool. the only problem is that it doesn't rotate. has anyone seen a car kit that i can mount in front of the vents that can rotate from portrait to landscape?
this is the kit i have
http://assets1.htchaven.com/images/product_images/accessories/large/1744.jpg
Use the other mount that came with it (3m tape and ARM). Position it in front of a vent and that way it can turn sideways. It has a ball/lock collar that allows 180 rotation. I have the same one.
typing from my bag phone
oh crap, i think i might've thrown it away, nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
theres an app that will auto rotate the screen check on the market

I have this mount and i love it, it sticks to the dash, window, or vent mount, it rotates 360. and its $14!!!

The Thunderbolt specific car dock has the ability to run in landscape or portrait. It also gives you the ability to charge while its docked. I hard-wired in my car dock so I dont have cables running all over. The picture actually shows it in portrait. So my .02c just pay the dough and get the verizon dock. LINK

2 one-hundredths of a cent? Haha but I'm thinking about getting that mount and hard-wiring myself. Then a tasker profile that when the phone is docked it turns WiFi off, GPS on, BT on, and opens Torque. Hmm...maybe a project for this week. Any tips for hard-wiring it? I'm sure I can do that.

how does it charge while docked. does that mean i don't have to plug my car charger into it?
also, how would it work if i wanted to keep the phone in front of the vent because the only place in the car that i could mount that too is the window and i don't wanna go that route especailly livin in alabama. the highs don't get below 90 degrees, so my phone would be toast
wait a minute you can totally use that mount sideways, ive used it like it many times. loosen the nut on the back of mount and rotate.
I would recommend mounting in front of the vent that way your A/C will be cooling the phone. I've got mine mounted low but would vent mount it if I had to do it again.
I use the Spiderpodium for my TB in the car. Ultimate flexibility!

Yes, you will need to plug your car charger into it. There is a pass-thru port on the back of the dock.
In includes a sticky base part that is suction cup compatible; perhaps you could put that on your dash in a location that allows you to bend the arm down over the A/C vent? I have mine mounted in a more conveniently accessible dash location, but if I shifted it to another position I'm sure the arm could hold it over my vent.
Also, it's available on Amazon for slightly less than through Verizon

the official dock has a plug inthe back of it to put the carcharger into. It then puts a port in the bottom of where you place the phone where the charging port in to transfer the power from the input to the output. The thing is that although you can rotate the dock to any degree you want (vertical, horizontal) the phone itself does not actually enter a dock mode so you need to either keep it vertical or you need to have fun reading from the side besides when you use any app that will change to its horizontal mode (maps, navigation, internet, videos, night clock)
This kit is not too bad

wow that thing looks awesome! does it rotate though? if so i might have to get that for $11 from amazon.
I just bought the Macally Mcup car bracket. It won't suit everybody's needs, but it fits the bill perfectly for me. However it will NOT hold a T-Bolt in a case, only bare. But since I only use a silicone skin which slips off in a second, it's a non-issue for me. I also had to dremel a tiny notch in it so I could plug in the USB cable while it's in the dock. But the positioning of it is perfect for my car and me, and it rotates 360*. Cheap enough too at less than 20 bucks shipped from any number of places.
So I have the official car dock:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECS-K1D9BEGSTA
And love the functionality of not having to plug in power or audio out all the time.
My only issue is that I want to be able to extend the arm length as it doesn't fit any where great in my car.
Has anyone seen a vent mount or extending arm accessory that is compatible with the official holster?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. I'm sure I could get creative with a solution but didn't want to reinvent the wheel if there is something out there already.
Nice! Is that mount horizontal only, or can it rotate to hold the phone upright too?

It can fully rotate 360 degrees and pivot in any direction. The holster is attached to the arm via a ball and socket connection so you have virtually unlimited options of angle etc... and then you just turn a knob to 'lock in' the position you like. I definitely worship the dock, just need a longer arm : (
OK one other question....if you have a case on your phone, do you have to take it off to use the dock? It looks like you would.
I searched around to try and find a longer arm, and no luck

Thanks for trying to help.
You definitely can't use a case.
The fit is meant to be 'perfect' so it's easy to lock in your phone with the microusb plug so power and audio work.
I love it!!! but no case would work.
Unless you can find a way to mount the flat circle to a longer arm and suction to that there isn't a viable arm extension. I have looked also. My maxima gives a long reach to the dock to where I like the mount to sit.
I bought the infuse dock but instead of using the arm that came with it I bought a proclip center console mount for my car. Looks nice and works great although it was expensive. Attached the infuse dock to proclip car mount and a proclip swivel mount.
I have the Infuse mount which I'm guessing has the same design as yours. Anyway, I found that the vent clip mount that I've been using for my Galaxy Tab mates perfectly to the Infuse mount. I can't be positive but this looks like the same vent mechanism.
Looks like I'm not allowed to post links so search for "Black Car Air Vent Holder With Clip For Nokia " on ebay and you should find it for $3.34.
Sorry to be off topic, but does the car dock have a cut out for the camera lens? I'm not sure from the pic.

so, i have a meta question about this dock. it looks pretty cool, and it *might* work to put it vertically in the space in the center console of my '98 honda accord, hopefully putting it right at my fingertips. that part's a crap shoot however. what i don't understand though is the audio out jack. how the heck does that work?? the audio jack on the phone is at the top, but the audio jack on the dock is on the bottom next to the usb plug. i just don't get how they route the audio out there. this might be a stupid question.

The phone only needs to be plugged into the microusb port on the dock for both power and audio to be piped through. The actual headset jack on the phone is not used. So phone goes into dock (just microusb port) then the audio out on the dock will work.

The desk dock works the same way. Only USB plugs into the phone, but the audio jack on the back of the dock does route the sound to external speakers.
This dock and mount is way better than that one. Plus ball locking might fit yours.

Also are these available at any local stores.. just hoping I could pick one up instead of ordering.. I checked the local Sprint store and they just have the universal mount kits. thanks for any info!

the dock that's specifically for the E4G includes a cig lighter power adapter, but the infuse version does not. i have power going to the infuse from cig lighter, then a standard audio cable going from the back of the dock to my car radio. works well. the volume level adjustment has to be done in software. i'm currently evaluating CarHome Ultra, which has configurations so that when you put the phone in the dock, it sets media volume to whatever you desire, then when you remove the phone from the dock, it reverts back to what it was.
---------- Post added at 11:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:00 AM ----------
one thing that kind of baffles me with the dock - when my phones in the dock, if i try to speak commands to it, it seems it can't hear me. the phone's microphone is covered by the adapter block you slide in to lock the phone and make usb connection. i have the infuse dock, but it looks identical to the E4G-specific dock.
does anyone else have trouble speaking commands when docked? it's frustrating, it makes it much less of a hands-free experience than what i was hoping for!

Seems like most people use some form of case (thicker than the zagg)
Does anyone know of a dock like this samsung dock but able to fit a phone with a case? Alternatives (docks that work with a case) dont seem to connect automatically to the micro usb. Just wondering if anyone knows of something that will do both? Shouldn't this exist? am I way off?

Looks like a good buy just wana know if anyone had bought this and liked it?
Looks like the one I bought from Best Buy. I like it, the only thing that I would warn about is that the phone can be a little difficult to take out. It doesn't want to just snap out like it should.
I have one. It holds the phone very well, but only without a case; absolutely no worries about the phone coming loose, and the phone doesn't bounce or vibrate, so the image is always quite readable. The only possible downside is that you might find the arm a bit short if you're driving a vehicle where the windshield is far forward, but then there's the adhesive disc, although I wouldn't want to go sticking some disk permanently to the dash of *my* car.
Leaving the charger and audio cables connected to the dock is very handy.
The phone recognizes that it's in a dock right away. There are a number of car dock launchers available (I like CarHome Ultra) as well as a car-specific voice mode.
The auto-plug charger that comes with the dock seems OK, but if you're using Navigator plus Pandora, your run-down battery won't get charged. I have yet to experiment with other high-amperage car chargers; seems like all the ones I have don't have USB conductors 2 and 3 shorted together, so they're pretty useless for this until I crack 'em open and solder.
I keep mine in a Toyota MR2 MK2 (little car) mounted at the bottom left of the windshield, and it's basically perfect there.
Oh -
Have it on my crv I can't live without it. Its easy to put in. Audio and charges are usable with one push. If you go caseless and are going to keep the phone for a while the price Is definetly worth it. Third party ones make you manually plug in charger and headphone Jack this makes it way more convienent.

It's pretty unfortunate that it doesn't work with any case though...too bad they didn't make a case combo that would fit that mount specifically.
for the price you can get other mounts that are so much better, look at Micro Center
For what it's worth, I have the Samsung OEM car dock as well and I absolutely love it. One thing I've found, though, is that the phone will occasionally go nuts thinking that I've pushed the button for voice recognition. It'll endless loop repeating "What would you like to do?" until I close out of the car launcher.
Not sure if this happens on the stock OS, I have Synergy+Bombardier loaded on it (rooted.)
I bought it. It's amazing, the dock mode syncs directly with my car stereo Bluetooth.
the only down side is you can not have a case on with it..

Try "car mode" in the market...
How to disable car mode for T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 / SII T989 Hercules car dock
This is mostly useful if you use Bluetooth audio for your car stereo. This method renders your car dock's USB audio-out jack useless, and you would have to use the phone's headphone jack for an audio cable (untested, since I use Bluetooth audio). The only thing I want a dock to do is hold my phone and charge it. I automate the rest myself. Proceed at your own risk...
Car Mode Ultra is great for overriding your stock car mode, but I wanted to disable it entirely. I didn't like adding another layer of car modes and letting them wrestle for control.
Anyway, since I couldn't find a way to 100% disable the stock car mode software, I did it in the hardware (in the car dock itself).
On the back of the sliding part of the dock, take off the two small stickers and remove the screws under them. Carefully pry the slide apart at the seam to reveal the circuit board inside. Remove the tiny resistor between pads D- and ID. No more car mode!
Apparently, no more charging, either. Or at least not enough current to keep up. Maybe the car mode resistor tells the phone to charge at a higher rate, I'm not sure. Either way, the next step gets the charging to work again, but first, there's a warning:
If you don't want to burn your car down, make sure you have at least a 1 amp (1000ma) rated charger for this next part, otherwise, don't do it. This step increases you charge rate from 500ma to about 800ma (some people with custom ROMs go even higher). If you do this, and your charger isn't powerful enough, it could fry your charger. I have no idea what your charger will do if it fries. Maybe nothing, maybe light your car on fire. If you're not sure about it, don't do it.
On the side of the printed circuit board opposite the audio jack, there are two pads labeled A/R and AL/D. Shorting them to each other will put your phone into "AC charge mode", which means higher charge rate, no USB data, and no USB audio out. Now reassemble the dock.
With Car Mode Ultra and NFC task launcher installed, you can do all kinds of cool stuff. I set Car Mode Ultra to activate upon connecting to the stereo's Bluetooth. This starts the program without activating stock car mode. I stuck an NFC tag on the back of my dock for even more automation. Bluetooth turns on Car Mode Ultra, which unlocks the screen, which enables NFC, which reads the tag, which toggles more settings, starts Pandora, etc. Pretty cool. Full automation.
I have a drop low car that if you go through train track it will bump you off your seat. So I need a car mount that will have the least vibration. Here are two I found on ebay. If any of you have purchase one or other please give a brief description of your experience.

I pre-ordered two of these: iBolt Galaxy S III Charging Dock
For a completely vibration free driving experience the ROK Solid mount is included, featuring a strong 70 mm suction cup. Attach to windshield, or use the included disc to place on dashboard. A ball-joint connector system allows the driver to adjust to almost any viewing angle. The female ball connector is an “industry standard” 17 mm size, allowing any dash, vent or bike mount designed for Garmin to work with the cradle as an alternative to the suction mount.

+1 for ProClip. I find mine rock solid, and it is better located in my car than a suction cup or CD mount would be. The big con is that it's likely the most expensive mount on the market. Still, I'm glad I went with it.
I'm going to be going with the ProClip once I get my phone for both myself and my fiancee. It looks like it's great and will fit both of our cars. I still have my old suction cup mount that I've been using for a couple years now that I think would work well enough when I want to do dashcam stuff.
I just received my ProClip mount last week and it is quality as usual. I've had them for at least five different devices, so I knew what to expect. I got the one that is wired for power, very convenient.
Does the proclip offer a landscape mounting option?
I have just bought the Samsung car dock. While some may say its not a well built as say the proclip ones. My logic is, should the dock fail, i can at least say Samsung it was your dock that failed. The samsung dock seems very good tho and has performed well on the bad roads i have near me.
I got a universal mount from DX (SKU 81246 if the link does not work). It works well and was inexpensive. That being said, I had the Samsung mount for my Fascinate which would put the phone into car mount mode when you plugged it into the micro-USB which IMHO is superior to any of the universal mounts in many ways. Anybody know if Samsung will be releasing a mount like this for the S3?

I have the powered ProClip dock that plugs into the socket on my dash (not the one you have to wire in). Mine holds my phone tightly enough to use in landscape, and that is how I keep it. I slide the phone in and out from the right side, and it works great.
I am using the iOttie mount and it is perfect. Easy to setup and move if needed and the phone sits securely inside. You can do landscape or portrait mode for your phone.
Not a powered solution however.

I'm working on a rear view mirror mount for the SGS3 (and others)
works great and keeps the phone out of driving view while keeping it where the eyes can see it.
I will post pictures later for anyone interested.

Does the proclip offer a landscape mounting option?

It is a tilt/swivel mount so you can have it either landscape or portrait. I keep mine in portrait but I have tried it landscape and it was still very solid.
iBOLT dock with car mode & integrated 9 ft cable...
Our iBOLT Dock (www.ibolt.co/ibpf-33307) works the same way as the old S2 car dock. It puts the phone into car mode (sVoice) but you can download the CarHome Ultra and this application will install itself as the default app opening when inserted into the Dock if you want. With CarHome you can drag and drop apps, short numbers or just about anything to your car home screen.
The dock also comes with a 9ft (yes, 2.7 meters!) long charging/aux-out cable. This allows you to place the Car Dock on the left side of the steering wheel and tuck the cable down the drivers door, under the carpet and up to the center console for USB charging and 3.5 aux-in. The home screen also turn horizontal. Look the video and see if this is an option... Feel free to contact us and ask questions.
