Hi all!,
So, I am trying to downgrade my phone from the unofficial CM12 to the stable CM11 from Sultanxda. I installed the official TWRP over top of Sultan's twrp - all seemed to work well.
Now, I went to do a factory reset to install CM11, and all madness broke out. I now have a phone that can boot into TWRP but has "no system", and my Ubuntu PC sees it as "unformatted". What do I do next?

you need to reformat your internal sd and it sounds like your system partition.
In TWRP, go to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe -> check Internal Storage -> press on "Repair or Change File System" -> press on "Change File System" -> press on "EXT4", and then swipe to start formatting the internal SD card. This can take up to a minute. IF EXT4 doesn't work when you flash a new rom (you get errors) you may need to format it as FAT.
use the same process for the System partition, it is EXT4.
Be sure you have everything you need on the EXT sd card because when you format system and the internal SD you will loose everything, and you need to be able to flash a rom etc from the ext sd...

OldeCrow,
Here's what I ended up finding out. I did that full wipe, and it still didn't work, even after a few reboots in disbelief. So- I downgraded my TWRP to an few versions back and suddenly, everything worked. Not sure what it means, but I got it fixed!

double check your partitions, make sure you have FAT32 + EXT3 @512mb then flash the chosen rom again, this is your best chance.
go with my rom, linked through my signature, the update will wipe the Cache + dalvik cache but keep all of you personal data and apps.

How do i check the partitions? Cant boot so can`t see them that way and haven't got card reader or anything. Im sure its got something to do with partition. Does this seem like it is causing the problem?
Any help appreciated.
bump, need help
have you wiped everything before flash?
I wiped with rom manager after downloading rom. Not sure of all the custom recovery options as rom manager usually does it all for you. Not sure if i should wipe date, cache etc, will this wipe my backups? Tried removing sd card but wont boot, not even sure how I would get another custom rom on sd card so i could flash that. I have both defrost 2.4a and opendesire aswell as a nandroid backup on my sd card but can't get these to boot either
Must be something to do with the sd card partition. Everything I try I get the message
E:Can`t mount/dev/block/mmcblk0p2(file exists)
error mounting sd/ext/!
Don't know what this means but think its causing the problem.
perhaps a bad sector on the SD?
try backing up everything on the SD, format it again & try the roms one by one to see which possible causes the issue
U need to try an alternative recovery.
Try using unrevoked, and flash and different recovery.
Sounds like the fake flash recovery u got with rom manager Isn't clearing ur partitions.

in Windows XP Disk Management, right-click the existing partition,
and click delete, that will leave the whole card as unallocated space. Then
right-click on the unallocated space, and click new partition.
edit : or install http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/sdfv2000.zip
free SD partitioner
in disk management it only shows the size as 3.18gb, I made the partition through rom manager which I think formats it in linux which windows doesn't recognise.
Taking the Sd card out gets in onto the animation screen, so a little further, but still doesn't boot. Very frustrating. \\\\\any more help appreciated.
Flash a ROM that doesn't use Apps2SD.
can you link one for me pal, ripping my hair out here, lol. By the way how do you do full wipe in custom recovery ie data, cache, is that it?
edit. Don't matter. Sorted. Copied an earlier backup of sd card onto spare sd card and did a recovery. Still need to know how to remove the partition from other sd card using windows.
This was definitely the problem and won't be using rom manager to do another partition.
If someone does know how to remove partitions using rom manager from sd card via windows then would appreciate it if you would let me know...
Stock rooted ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694564
Full wipe can be done using the "wipe data/factory reset" option in ClockworkMod Recovery.
To get rid of the ext Partition get gparted or something like that. Normal Windows cant see ext partitions because its a Linux filesystem. You can also take a Linux live cd.
Can't you just take ROM Manager and partition your SD card again? Swap 0/Ext 0/FAT 32 All
It looks like something isnt ok with the partitions so i would recommend to delete all partitions and make them new i also had a problem once with my sd card but after deleting all partitions and repartition it everything was ok again.
- Unrar "Huawei U8650.rar ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7."
2 - Turn off your cell phone battery 5sec, so put in again and enter fastboot mode: (VOL- and POWER simultaneously for 25sec)
3 - Connect mobile phone to the PC.
4 - Execute: "ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7 (Bootloader-Volum DOWN + POWER)"
5 - Run "reboot" (even DO NOT take the cable)
6 - You are now in ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7

CWM 5.0.2.7 ignoring ext partition?
Hi everybody. I have installed CWM v5.0.2.7 on my SONIC U8650 smartphone. I'm having a slight problem with this recovery (same occurred with previous version 4.0.1.4). It's not saving the ext partition that I have on the sd card. When I perform a backup through CWM, it skips the saving of sdext as this partition is not being found. Also, with previous CWM version 4.0.1.4, there was an option to manually mount the partition (just in case it is not found at the time of backup) in the "Mounts and storage" option. This option is no longer present in CWM 5.0.2.7 so I can't manually mount the partition (whether this would let CWM recognize the partition and make a proper backup of it). In the end I'm not able to have sdext fully backed up (I resorted at doing a manual backup on my notebook with LINUX with partimage) along with all the other partitions such as /system, /data, /cache etc etc. I therefore wonder if this is a bug and if there's a way to get around this.
I have another smartphone with CWM v5.0.2.3 installed and on this one the backup of the sd-ext partition does work (and it is ext4, not ext3). I wonder if on this 5.0.2.7 version for SONIC, ext3 partitions would be recognized or not.
P.S.: The CWM 5.0.2.7 I installed was taken from here. And this is the installation guide. Is this the same CWM as the one posted here?
EDIT: I have flashed even this version posted here and still the same problem.... it desn't backup my sd-ext partition. It does backup boot_image, recovery_image, system, data, android_secure, cache but not sd-ext (no sd-ext found).

Hi dude:
If you wanna sd-ext on your sd card you must follow (exactly) this easy steps.
1- Full format in FAT32 your SD card with Mini Partition 7 (windows) or gparted (linux); per example: Primary FAT32
2- put your sd card into your phone and get into recovery menu.
---go to "mounts and storage" and format this parts:
---/boot
---/cache
---/data
---/sdcard
---/system
3- Go to the beggining of recovery menu and select:
..."wipe data/factory reset"...(say YES)
..."wipe cache partition"...(say YES)
Go to ...advanced ..."wipe Dalvik Cache"...(say YES)
...go back...
5- Go to...advanced...partition SD card (say 512Mb to ext and64Mb to swap)
...go back...
...go to...mounts & storage... mount USB storage...
... conect the phone via USB and pass your favourite ROM to the cellular
6- select "unmount"
7- Go to "Go Back"
8- Select "install zip from sdcard"... "chose zip from sdcard" and select your ROM
10- Say YES and wait untill your ROm is installed
Congratz, now you have your U8650 with custom ROM and ext partition with swap
P.S. I know the steps are some tedious think but, it works at 110% man

Please help! Huawei u8652 (At&t Fusion)
Am stuck here with an At&t fusion which a friend purchased a not long ago. He set it up with a lock pattern but unfortunately his colleague took it up and tried more than 5times. Now the phone is asking for the gmail account used to set it up. Which he did not change when he got it. I would like you to give a step by step guide to get the cwm on it in other to flash it with custom rom. The menu can't be accessed so I thought your method would be the best.

Sorry for the late reply and many thanks for the tip. I have been using the SONIC so far without the need to restore the system which works fine, so it was not urgent and therefore I kept it as it was, never tried again to overcome the problem. Only a question: does this procedure (different from the one I used) let the system correctly generate the backup of /sdext partition in CWM? Because I don't see why it would work with this procedure and not with my current sdext partition, which I created using gparted on a linux notebook.
Easy as pie, thank you.

I've been having similar problems with creating/saving the partitions. I used a procedure like yours and managed to get the partitions created.
But your write hits it on the head......thanks.

Whenever I flash any rom on my gsm nexus my previous apps and info still show up on the new rom, even if I did a full wipe. Is there something wrong with my nexus?
If they're on your virtual sd card then no, nothing's wrong. CWR doesn't touch your sd card partition nor does doing a factory reset. The only way to delete everything is to format them (mounts & storage -> format /data). If you want you can format all of the partitions, however you won't be able to boot until you flash recovery and adb push your ROM's zip onto the 'sd card' and install it.
Hello,
My first gen Kindle Fire has been setup in the OtterX format and has been running well on the CM STG7 ROM. I decided to update to the latest version last week and since then, my OtterX has not recognized the SDCard.
TWRP does see the SDcard and will view it's contents when browsing the file manager, but it won't mount the SDcard to my computer desktop. Nothing happens when I click the mount button.
When the OtterX boots, the System > Storage sees the SDcard and contents, but when I try to browse to it with a file manager, it says the path is invalid.
ADB shell sees the /sdcard/ directory and I can browse it from the shell as well.
I've tried formatting the entire device, including wiping the internal storage and formatting data (where you have to type in "yes") and nothing has resolved this issue.
Any idea what's going on?
I have had similar problem, rebooting a couple of this times seemed to fix.
But may need to reformat in twrp or do otter x partitions in bootloader

I'll try reformatting again.
My partitions became corrupted a couple years ago and I had to rebuild them manually, following a tutorial. OtterX partitions in the bootloader doesn't work on my device. I'm guessing it's because the partitions are spot-on with the sizing.
Do you know of a way to rebuild the partitions manually so they match the stock specs - maybe that way the bootloader partitioning would work?
Just restore amazon partitions in bootloader, reboot, restore otter x partitions.

For some reason after trying a different ROM (can't remember which one), I lost my SD card again and I can't seem to get it back. I even reverted the bootloader to FFF and did the "OEM Format", then followed the steps back to OtterX.
Attached is my partition table. I don't see a 'media' table, which is the SDcard, correct?
Any idea what else to do?
Otterx utilizes space that was already there, but reserved for the system. In order to better use available space for user data, the storage is placed elsewhere on the tree. The sd card should be located under storage on the otterx tree.

The strange thing is TWRP sees and accesses the SD card just fine.
I have a feeling the SD card isn't formatted in the correct format. Any idea how to format (or check/change format type) of the SD card through ADB?
Did you try the Repair file system in TWRP?

[HOW TO] Fix "Failure to mount" sdcard, system, data or cache
Prior to today, I had not installed TWRP or rooted my T310 device. I believed I followed the instructions to root my device correctly (found here). Going through TWRP, I rebooted the system to install the Superuser package. I then rebooted the system, loaded up TWRP, and began to do a system wipe (followed instructions found here) to prep the flash of the rom and gapps.
I selected the following partitions to wipe: Dalvik cache, system, data and data. The instructions werent clear, so I checked both 'data' boxes.
After the wipe executed, I went to flash the rom and GAPPS I loaded to the internal sd card aaaaand... there were no .zip files. Crap. I went to reboot TWRP and it alerted me that my device does not appear to be rooted. Double crap. Not panicking, I went to mount and tried to see if I could mount the internet SD card to my device. Nothing. Windows now shows a 'Samsung_Android' device but it is listed under 'unspecified'. Reloading the drivers have done no good.
I'm guessing SuperUSer was never installed correctly *or* I did something during the reset.
I, of course, did not perform a backup prior to all of these. I have rooted my devices multiple times and it was always a breeze so why backup now? Weell...
So now I'm sitting here with a nonSU device, with no OS, no backup, and I'm unable to connect my device to Windows. Outside of loading a rom from an external SD Card, what options do I have?

You can either download the whole firmware and use Odin to flash or get adb setup and push a rom zip to the internal card using adb.

hi,
you will need a microsd card 32gb and properly formatted that comes with a card reader for your pc.
download your rom and get it onto the card, insert the card into your device
boot to twrp, and flash,
now, if twrp still spits the no os message at you, which is an issue with twrp,
you next need to go to your wipe options, select advanced and do a full data format/wipe,
NOT SYSTEM, DATA. meaning /data and /data/media. when that completes you should be sorted
but expect your initial boot of the new rom to take a little longer.
never wipe system with twrp. the rom's updater-script will manage that function.
m
Thank you both. I lost my SD cards and card reader in a move so while that orders, I will attempt to utilize ADB. I'm pretty green but I'm certain there are guides out there..

hi,
your external sdcard should be formatted as single partition fat32 unaligned,
if you running windows, use bootice, look it up
On linux , gparted may give you issues, if so, on debian at least there is another better utility
though the name escapes me at the moment, disk manager i think.
