LG G4 camera broke, had to replace. Anyone else? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Verizon VS-986 here.
A couple of days ago, I went into the Camera app to take a picture and it was "stuck" on the selfie camera, and the icon to switch to the main camera was gone. I went back to the home screen and back into Camera, and fiddled with the Modes, and it finally came back. I clicked on it, and the app showed an image for a couple seconds, then froze up. I did a lot of back and forth with it, and sometimes it would show an image for a second and freeze; sometimes it went totally black and froze the app; eventually, after power cycling a few times, it was stuck on the front-facing camera for good, with no icon to swap to the back camera. Basically, at this point, the app had recognized that there WAS NO back camera and didn't even bother presenting the option anymore.
This had all the hallmarks of a hardware problem. Glitchy, intermittent outages, then the hardware simply not recognized anymore. Still, I cleared out caches and searched online and found this article: How to Fix Camera Failed Problem on LG G4 (recomhub.com/blog/how-to-fix-camera-failed-problem-on-lg-g4/), none of which did anything to help. (I'm not rooted/unlocked so I couldn't clear the cache partition like they recommended, though it clearly wouldn't have helped anyway.)
Couple other things that may or may not be relevant: it was VERY hot out (80+ degrees) when then problem started and the phone was hot as a result of it. But it kept happening after cool down.
A crazy other thing that happened was, that evening, after rebooting one last time just to be sure, half the screen turned into rainbow noise during the Verizon logo and stayed that way for several seconds, even into the lock screen. That pushed me over the edge.
I went to a Verizon store and they kindly swapped it out for me. But that was weird and I wanted to put it on the record. Also curious whether anyone else had this problem.

Not that problem, but check out this other thread I started regarding the camera causing the phone to overheat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3142806
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk

I've had the rainbow noise on the right half of the screen show up on boot at the Verizon screen as well. It stayed that way until the lock screen and that's when I powered the phone off, pulled the battery and let the sit for a few minutes. Haven't had the problem in the weeks since I've had the phone though.

The exact thing happened to me. My rear camera will not work at all. And the flashlight also will not work. Tried rebooting, factory resetting it, clearing cache, and took out my battery and still nothing.

I had a Verizon G4 that the rear camera stopped working on. I believe it was caused by a drop. I posted on here about it. For mine it just wouldn't focus anymore. Replacement was very easy, you only need a small Philips head screwdriver, and your fingernail, or plastic tool to remove the connector and pry the camera out which is held in by adhesive.
Replacement OEM part out of a Sprint G4 was under $14 USD on eBay.

Hello,
I have the exact same issue. Do you have a solution ? I dont want to rma anymore, screen coating than bootloop than this, this phone is a true disaster.

Only other thing any one could try is a tot lgup restore if that dont work either more than likely its a hardware failure. I had issues on my g2 with a could not connect to camera from the factory. Found out my stock rom was corrupted from lg toted and worked like new. Did it again a few moths later. Toted avain worked like new. I asume something in the camera files corrupted. Just throwin in my 2 cents.

Hello, thanks for the answer.
I fixed the issue by myself few minutes ago, i simply disconnected than reconnected the rear camera plug to the motherboard.

Hi, how did that 14 dollar camera work out for you? I'm getting wildly varied prices for replacement rear camera on eaby. Do you have a link to the one you bought and did it work as well as the original? Thanks.

Jesus i didnt see that. Sorry

So my brand new original camera module arrived today, i replaced it myself and...the camera still doesn't work. Looks like it's an MB problem. I have to send this god damn phone to LG again..

Hello, here is an update about my camera. LG repair the phone by changing the motherboard and the camera module.

[Q] I dropped my phone in a toilet, peed on it, and flushed it. She works, but...

I know, I know... there are plenty of threads regarding dropping your phone in the loo/water/rain, but none of them address the issue I'm having.
I put 'er in rice for over 24 hours and she does work, but with a few quirks:
The vibrate function barely works (it's weak and inconsistent)
The speaker randomly pops and makes a "shhhhh" noise when the phone is being used
The camera does not work
Now what I really only care about here is the camera. The first time I tried to use the camera it DID work, but then I tried the front-facing camera and... nada. Nothing. She's dead, Jim.
I'm wondering if there's a way to change it so either a) all camera apps default to the back camera, b) all camera apps do not recognize that there is a front-facing camera, or c) attempting to utilize the front-facing camera does not cause the app to crash and make reaching the back camera impossible. I figured doing a factory reset would accomplish this, and I am open to that if no other option is available, but I'd like to see what else I can do.
Thank you in advance!

Well I have a cousin that ran into the same problem. Since insurance didn't cover water damage, he bought a replacement off Craigslist that had a cracked screen. It was cheap but he was able to use it for replacement parts.

I got an S3 in January that got ran over by like 400 cars a couple weeks ago (I'm so good at keeping my devices safe, aren't I?) so I just bought this replacement. I can't find any broken ones on CL, and my destroyed S3 sold for $122.50 on eBay. I'm not willing to shell out that much just to have a working camera. Perhaps I could sell this one as-is and just buy a replacement on CL? I'm not sure I care that much about it to go through the hassle, hah.
I do have an S2 that isn't working, so maybe I could swap the camera out of that one? I don't know much regarding the hardware differences between the two devices.
You can buy a new *speaker* from amazon. The are like $20-$30 and easy to install (no soldering and only 2 screws). Also I'd pull the bat out and rub the phone up and down with rubbing alcohol.
The speaker comes with a new modem and headphone socket.

Camera Issues.

Hi all.
I bought a HTC One M8 after killing my Xperia Z. My dad also has an M8, and its been perfect for him since day one. I've been thoroughly impressed with the device, despite its age, and will find it hard to part with when I eventually purchase an ARA when released! This will be a lengthy post, so bare with me please.
The issues started at the beginning of the week. I hadn't done anything different, but I noticed that my camera wasn't working full stop. I'd click on the app and it would force close. So i did some research and found a couple of solutions, most of which involved Last Pass, which isn't installed on my device, however I tried those that didn't involve it, to no avail. Somewhere along the way, I must've done something wrong as I started to get the "gaaps.com has stopped" error, and the error message would reappear every few seconds, rendering the phone unusable. After a factory reset, the "gapps.com" error had stopped, but my camera issue still persisted.
It's worth noting that the night before, I did drop a dumbbell on the screen by accident, but the camera WAS working perfectly fine afterwards. The problems I described above occurred the day after.
So after getting nowhere, I decided to take the plunge and replace the camera unit. I purchased an OEM part, and then when it was delivered I continued to strip the phone down and replace the old module with the new one. That was last night. I started the phone up, and clicked on the camera. Hey Presto! The front facing camera worked. No option for the rear camera though. So i installed a 3rd party app, and in that app, the rear facing camera is upside down. I placed my finger over the bottom camera of the two rear ones (the camera i replaced) and the image wasn't blocked by my finger. I placed my finger over the top rear camera, and the image was blocked.
So my question now is, having replaced the entire lower module with a new part, what could be causing the image to be upside down on the third party app, and not showing a rear camera function at all in the stock app?
I'm 99% sure that I rebuilt the phone correctly, but I am going to strip it down again tonight and then rebuild it to make sure I hadn't missed anything out.
Any and All suggestions and questions are welcome.
Thanks,
Mylo.
Update
So, just to update.
I purchased a faulty HTC M8 off eBay for a rather good price. It's arrived, and ive just spent the last 45 minutes stripping the camera sisterboard out of the purchased one and fit it into my handset. All works perfectly. So one can only assume that my sister board was broken in some way or another.
Regards,
Myles.

Fingerprint Hardware Not Available; Camera App Not Responding - troubleshooting insid

Hey Guys, the fingerprint sensor on my Nexus 5x (LG H791) stopped working out of the blue the other day. I bought the phone on eBay about 2 months ago, and the seller told me it had an international warranty. However, this warranty is not supported by LG Canada (so much for being international). FUrthermore, the seller says his stuff shipped from the US, but it actually shipped from Malaysia. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed off.
Anyways, the 5X has been great until the other day. I pulled the phone out of my pocket and tried to unlock it with my fingerprint as I always do. It didn't unlock, didn't vibrate, and didn't do anything. I pressed the power button and tried again. At this point I noticed the dreaded red words across hte bottom that said "Fingerprint Hardware Not Available". After a quick google I see that people have resolved this problem by rebooting the phone - which did I did, but the scanner did not come back. I then cleared the cache, and that did not solve the problem.
I then noticed, that night, that my phone was fully charged whne I went to sleep and when I woke up it was at 20%. Normally, I'll lose 3-5% overnight. I checked what was using my battery and "Phone Idle" had kept my phone awake for 14h!
SO - I've tried removing a bunch of apps, booting in safe mode, playing with the security settings, display timeout, and a bunch of crap - nothing has worked. I have NOT formatted/recovered the phone yet (I'm out at a mining camp and this is the only way I keep in touch with my girl. Also I forgot my USB-C to USB-A cable.)
What do you guys think - did the fingerprint scanner just crap out? I would really like to get it working again, cause I love(d) this phone. I upgraded from a Nexus 4 and I was a big fan of the nexus, until this crappity crap happened.
Anyways, thanks for your help in advance with figuring out these two issues.
B
EDIT - the original title for this post was "[ISSUES] Fingerprint Hardware Not Available - and now Nexus Imprint is missing..." I have since changed the title to reflect both the finger print and the camera trouble shooting, results, and further questions.
Bump - can anyone help???
Guess there isn't anyone here that's knowledgeable enough to help me with this issue..
Well, I tried removing a bunch of apps, to see if something was causing it - it was not. Then my camera stopped working.. Sometimes when I'd open it up my camera would work, and sometimes it would just crash. I've since performed a factory reset on the phone and there is still no option for Nexus imprint. Whenever I try to open the camera the screen goes black, shows the camera icon and then the Camera app just crashes.
I've got a replacement fingerprint sensor which I'm going to install this weekend. I'll keep you guys in the loop, because apparently this is something that no one here can help with.
Got the fingerprint sensor replaced on my phone. When pulling out the old one there was no visible damage. The connection was solid. I installed a new sensor (which I purchased for $16 shipped to my door I'm Canada from esourceparts). After turning the phone on, in my security settings, "Nexus Imprint" appeared. Set up the new fingerprints, and it works flawlessly.
Looks like it was hardware not software.
The camera still doesn't work, battery life has increased remarkably.
Happy again.

Can't agree with you more (I also upgraded from Nexus 4, and a nexus fan).
I have the exact same issue right now.
It happened to me right after the Nougat upgrade, so I thought it had to do with it, so I tried everything, including downgrade back to Marshmallow, but nothing works.
It's exactly like you wrote, suddenly the fingerprint stopped working, showed this red "hardware" message, then it disappeared completely from the settings, and also the phone started to drain battery twice faster. It's probably has to do with the fingerprint sensor, maybe it's trying to detect it all the time or something, draining the battery.
I'm really frustrated, we're going on a long vacation in 2 weeks and I really need the phone to work well... If I'll order the sensor from ebay right now, it won't get here on time
I think this was my last nexus... (had nexus S, nexus 4, and nexus 5X)
update:
just received OTA update (build NRD90R) which seems to fixed the fingerprint sensor, it works again. hope it will stay this way, don't wanna jinx it.
My fingerprint sensor also seems to have bitten the dust. It sporadically ceased functioning whenever I got it slightly wet, either from sweat when running or if exposed to a little rain. It would always come back after a few hours, however this time it seems to have completely quit. I have done a factory reset and it is still missing. I'm fairly certain I have an issue with the hardware. My phone is under LG's warranty since I bought it from Amazon, so getting the sensor repaired will mean weeks without my phone. It sounds like people are having good luck with replacing the fingerprint sensor themselves. Is this difficult to do? I'd much rather take this route if I can.
I got the "fingerprint hardware not available" message last night out of the blue. Tried a few things to no avail.... Flashed factory image and it works good as new again.

I went ahead and bought the parts to replace my fingerprint scanner hardware myself. Not 2 hours after I place the order, my fingerprint scanner just randomly starts working again...after 3 weeks. Bizarre. Regardless, I'm planning on holding onto the backup hardware just in case.

No I have not.
But that's a good idea. I did a factory reset on the phone and that didn't solve it. After a restart I can open both the rear and front facing cameras without a problem. But after about 3 minutes of the phone being on, some bug happens and I cannot open the camera. I get a black screen and either I can kill the app and continue using the phone, or the phone just restarts. When I get the black screen I cannot switch to the front camera either - the phone just craps out.
I'll try loading the factory images and see if that helps.
So I fixed the problem by taking apart the phone and installing a new fingerprint sensor.
Google Play support, Google Support, and LG Support would not extend service to this phone because it was an international version. Unfortunately, Google support couldnèt do anything other than to tell me to try a hard reset (which I did).
I ordered a new fingerprint sensor from epartsource (Canadian supplier) which cost me $16cad shipped to my door. Taking apart the 5x by following the instructions on ifixit was very painless. It was incredibly easy to replace the sensor as well. Before putting the phone back together we booted the phone up, and went to the security settings - low and behold, nexus imprint was an option again.
The old fingerprint sensor did not appear to have any damage, the clip was firmly in place before we removed it, and the unit looked like it was in good condition.
This has also solved my battery life woes; I can get about 4 days on airplane mode now.
Now, all I need to do is fix the camera (I lost use of the camera about 4 days after the fingerprint sensor crapped out.) I have since ordered a replacement camera from Aliexpress - I'll post up a new thread for that when it comes.
I'm not sure why the fingerprint sensor AND the camera would both stop working at or around the same time. I think that something may have impacted the rear of the phone causing damage to both of them. Very poor if the fingerprint sensor is THAT fragile.
I'm happy to have my phone working near 100% again. I am a very loyal nexus customer, however, that is changing quickly with the lack of service provided by both Google and LG. Google, I hope you're listening. You need to do more to keep your customers.

The more I thought about it, the more I think it has to do with water. If your finger is slightly wet, DO NOT use your fingerprint sensor. I'm fairly certain it was this that killed mine. Or a slight impact to the back of the phone.
Regardless, I treat my stuff pretty well and I take good care of it. I was at work, however, and I need to spray down things so my hands are constantly wet. I had been using my fingerprint sensor with damp/wet fingers in the few days before it crapped out.

I like to use my phone with an armband while running and my armband has a "clever" design with an open spot to give you access to the sensor. Unfortunately this means it is in direct contact with my skin and sweat while I run. I got in the habit of sticking a small cloth between the sensor and my skin to keep it dry, but apparently even tiny amounts of moisture on your finger when it's raining seems to be enough to damage it. Anyone know if this is just an issue with the 5X sensor or do other phones also have this problem?

It makes sense... The sensor is probably some sort of heat detector that can discern slight differences in heat on the surface of the sensor. A ridge of your fingerprint would conduct more heat to the sensor than heat that's radiated to the sensor from a fingerprint valley. It probably makes a quick map of the thermal Imprint and matches this to your saved profiles.
Or I'm out to lunch. Lol.
However, I'm pretty sure water killed mine, and the fingerprint sensors are very fragile. I've stopped using mine all together until I have clean hands. This means no using it at work.
Bought a replacement camera module from Aliexpress and finally got around to installing it. With the cover, and the frame off, new camera module installed, I was able to open the camera, use both the front and the back cameras.
However, when I closed it all up and went to use the camera, I get the same errors. Black screen, cannot connect to camera, and then it crashes/restarts the phone.
Definitely not hardware!

I downgraded from N-Preview 5 (? v.7.1.1) to android 7. Camera would only work for a few moments after immediately rebooting the phone.
Sideloaded 6.0.1 using fastboot and unlocked bootloader - the first time I ran the new install, the camera app crashed instantly. Rebooted, and now it's been working fine.................. Let's see how long it lasts! Will update tomorrow.
So. I followed the instructions on Google's page (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images) and I sideloaded build MMB29V. And the camera NOW WORKS! I left the phone powered on over night and the camera will start anytime I need it to. I installed all of the available OTA updates, bringing me up to NBD90W, and my camera is STILL launching flawlessly!
In other words - a fresh factory install fixed the camera issues!+
Edit: Just sideloaded in the latest version of 7.0.0 (NBD90W, Oct 2016) and the camera is stable. The stock android camera is version 4.1.006.125161292. I will keep you updated as it progresses. The actual camera module in my phone is the one that I ordered from Aliexpress ( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ori...era-Module-Replacement-Parts/32657390368.html) The black housing on the camera module was a bit different than the OEM one I pulled out. I didn't check any serial numbers to verify; so I don't know if the one from Ali is actually OEM.

That's encouraging! Mine died overnight, after being intermittent yesterday. Went onto eBay and ordered a replacement from Asia for about CAD$9 delivered, should arrive around Christmas.
esourceparts (I'm also in Canada) only had the black sensors -- mine is white, and I like white.

LG G3 D855 Screen flickers and fade to darkness

Hi and thank you for checking my thread
I have a problem with my G3 as described in the tittle, I did the Paper trick I saw on YouTube but sadly it didn't work
After a while I found out that placing a piece cut from Credit card under the CPU might work and I did , but one week later I had the same problem, likely I can just click sleep button and it returns to normal
After these many problems I decided to give up on it and sell it, but I need a permanent Fix so I don't get involved in Cheating
Also , does replacing motherboard will fix the issue ?
Does G4 Worth it now ? I know about bootloop problem
Probably is a bad motherboard
When my G3 finally died (digitizer went bad), I just replaced it with a used G4 for $150. That was like 6 months ago. The phone has been phenomenal. I know there is many who say that every G4 will bootloop eventually, but I really don't see how thats possible if you just browse google for the issue. Yeah, a lot of people had the problem, but if everyone did you wouldn't see the G4 still being sold at a ton of outlets, and you would see hundreds of links to the issue. I think there was a large batch of them that were bad... and they got past QC, but the vast majority of them are probably fine.

Yea, i saw "1 month/year after" Reviews on youtube and no one montion the bootloop issue, people ask them in comments and they reply that the phone works normal with no issues
Thank you for replying dude appreciate it
I was skeptical at first, but by baking the motherboard in the oven did the trick for me. It has been a couple of hours now an no flickering, no black screen and no troubles. And i know i'm asking for Murphy to come and bite my as*, but as a little trick, i'd like to suggest before putting the mobo in the oven to try something: i have an old Akasa X4 cpu cooler which has metal fins which are removable. I took one of those things and cut a square a little bit smaller than the power IC to the right of the SoC and then cut another one the exact same size then stacked the two one on top of each other, making sure to not short any capacitor around the IC and then put the metal shield back, making sure to put pressure on the IC. Then preheated the oven at roughly 180 degrees celsius, then put the motherboard SoC face up into the preheated oven on three balls of aluminium foil, one at the bottom near the micro usb, and the others to balance the motherboard, like a BMW Isetta, and put the timer for 10 minutes. After these nervous 10 minutes, I took out the mobo and let it to cool at room temperature for ~30 minutes. And voila, now it works. I do hope that it is going to last, and i will be very careful with this phone, unlike the previous owner. Seriously, how can you put a freaking button (small one, from a shirt) between the SoC and the mid-frame? Crazy. And that's why i got it for ~8000 JPY (about 70 bucks).

I had a similar problem for about two months. I tried the paper thing over the camera sensor and I felt like it helped some but the problem still continued. The screen would just slowly go dark with vertical lines running through it. All apps would still work in the background while this was happening. I could boot to TWRP and this problem never happened while in TWRP which was odd. Seemed like if it was a screen issues or hardware malfunction it would happen all the time. That's when I decided to just flash back to stock. I was thinking about getting the S8 anyways so what the hell. I flashed to stock 10B and took every single OTA. Took all night but I've been running stock for over a day now and the issue has not replicated itself one time since reverting back to stock. I was on RR Nougat and Fulmics when it happened prior. Has to be a root or Rom issue?

Just wondering if your G3 is still functioning without the issue.
It really feels like a hardware issue but as you pointed out it didn't happen in TWRP... but like many, I encounter the issue when the phone gets a bit warm (>35C), so maybe TWRP and your stock android is not as hot as RR Nougat? Then again, I'm on MM when this happened...
Update: Actually the flicker n fade happened to me in TWRP while I was backing up. The temperature read about 60C.
I had bigger problems with my g3 and they started as follows
Problem 1. camera not being detected and crashing. 2. Reboot once a while which got worse over time. 3. Bluetooth sketchy and WiFi not connecting. 4. Sd card being ejected and mounted constantly. 5. Mobile data stopped working.
Solution: baked it in the oven 10min with cpu side up at 185c removed to cool 4 30min. Problems gone for the meantime.
This morning at work my D852 died with the exact same screen fades to black and would only stay on for at most like 10 seconds and would only come on again after the processor cooled enough. I came across this youtube video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF1s4RCZAvc
Since I didn't have any copper foil tape, I substituted with Aluminum foil tape and placed the tape in the same places as detailed in the video. (copper works better than aluminum for heat dispersal)
My phone is now back to normal and hasn't shown any issues with the past 5 hours since I applied the fix.
UPDATE: My phone has worked perfectly for several days now until I turned on the GPS from Cell Tower to High Accuracy and it immediately started to die again. Once it cooled down I was able to get to the settings screen to turn off GPS and it went back to functioning like normal
How to fix
I tried the paper trick and it did not work. No need to replace the motherboard or the phone. The issue is just a bad connection between the motherboard to the LCD display.. Probably due to dirt (in my case, I found that quite a few places in my motherboard had corrosion buildup). Here is the fix...
1. Remove battery cover and Unscrew The back plastic from the base of the phone to get to the motherboard.
2. Disconnect all the connectors from the motherboard.
3. Scan the motherboard for anything unusual. (My motherboard had corrosion on several different places).
5. Clean any dirt or corrosion with lint-free cloth. (I didn't have one so I had to use a Q-tip).
*if needed, Dip the cloth in rubbing alcohol to assist in cleaning. make sure that the cloth is JUST BARELY Damp and not dripping, otherwise you will risk water-damaging the phone. If you use rubbing alcohol, make sure that you dry the spot right after you wipe it.
6. Once you have cleaned the motherboard, check the base of the phone and clean any dirt from here also.
7. Replace the motherboard, re-connect the connections, screw on the back, and put the battery cover back on.
Viola! Mine has been working like new for 4 days so far with no issues...

So a permanent fix is a new motherboard or a new screen?

Camera sensor replacement... Anyone?

Hi guyz & girlz,
I got a Pixel 2 XL for my wife two months ago. Worked well for let's say a week
Both rear and front cameras died! As soon as i opened the camera, i got a black screen and it'd force close after a few seconds.
At first, it failed to launch for 30 minutes, then started to work again. The day after, it died completely...
reverted to P and even O to see if it would fix it, but unfortunately, no...
So i did a bit of research and found out it seems to be hardware related. The phone is out of warranty by the way ( wouldn't be fun otherwise?! ).
Anyone here who replaced his sensors?
If yes, is it a sustainable fix?
Maybe you had a different sensor revision?
I have found a person whom replacing the sensor fixed it, but who knows for how long, maybe the issue wasn't even the same as i have. So i wish some of you guyz can give me some feedback.
Thanks in advance!
Sébastien.
First double check if it's software related. Try some different camera apps, flash a fresh factory image to see if it resolves the problem. If it's a hardware problem it might be cheaper to buy a used one.
I was quoted at ubreakifix $300 for replacing a cracked screen, ended up buying a used 2xl for $150.

Hi,
Thank you for the input...
I "flashed" the device numerous times = erased everything, without any change.
I opened the phone, removed the front sensor, rebooted = camera FC.
Plugged front sensor back, removed the back one, rebooted = camera FC.
So, after all this, i guess it's safe to say it is hardware related.
The issue is kinda widespread by the way:

I just replaced both cams and battery works 100% afterwards... Good luck ...
Hello,
@kudabee61 Thank you for your feedback..! ?
I finally ordered both front and rear camera sensors replacement and have had the time to open the device earlier today...
Despite both cameras not working, once the back sensor's been replaced, the front one started to work again... ?
Well, i replaced it anyway..!
Phone is working great now, but since this happened, my wife switched back to Apple. Thanks Google for your crappy devices..!
Cheers...
Sébastien.
