Emergency Alerts w/ Alternative Message App - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I've been using my G4 for a few weeks (stock / T-Mobile H811), but I vastly prefer the stock android messenger app to LG's app so I have it installed as the default message app. Today, I received my first emergency alert and my phone went nuts -- the alert sound went off at full volume despite the phone being on vibrate, the screen did not activate and when I woke up the phone I saw a brief flash of an alert message that instantly disappeared, the alert sound did not silence despite pressing every button on the phone, and then the alert sound kept repeating every 60 seconds. It took me forever to find the alerts in LG's messaging app, but I then found that I could only alter the alerts if LG's app was the default SMS app.
It seems like if you aren't using LG's SMS app as default, these alerts get all screwed up. Please tell me there's a way to fix this. I actually do want the alerts, just not at full volume every 60 seconds with no visual indication of what they are.

Working mute app for allowing certain numbers

i9300 4.1.2 rooted stock ROM, howevever frozen/uninstalled many system apps.
Currently have app Silent Hours which successfully allows calls through while it has activated mute.
I however want an app which can perform a quick mute, preferably with widget on home screen, while still allowing customized numbers through. Silent hours does have a quick mute function, but it does not allow calls through with this function. So at the moment I have to go into silent hours, choose start time and and end time, what day, then I get what i want. It's just too tedious. Plus I'd like to customize what numbers to let through; it can only allow all calls.
I started looking around and tried some apps, but none of them unmutes when call is made to a S3 it seems:
Mute-o-matic is very fancy with all the features I want, mailed dev, no response.
What I tried:
Custom event in mute o matic, set time from one minute from now and waited for mute. Then made call from number on exceptions list (tried two different cell phones), call is coming through but no sound. Auto-sms reply works.
Calendar event. Again, no ringtone but SMS is working.
Restarted app, restarted phone
Closed all other apps, clearing memory, closing all active services.
Frozen all other similar mute apps.
Custom level to 6
I tried all other relevant apps I could find on play store; all of them failed in unmuting.
I just now gave play another go. Searched all free apps for "Mute", and tried all app with required features.
Mute 'N caller - fails to unmute.
RD Mute - can't put in mute mode via the triggers
perhaps the reason is one of the system apps I removed or my ROM being screwed up some other way, since the apps lists S3 as tested and working. I would however before flashing appreciate if some of you could tell me an app that is working for you!
edit:
Tried out even more apps.
RD Mute - can't put in mute mode via the triggers
Doesn't work at all:
VIP calls https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vision.vipcallseng&hl=sv
mute n call
Selective Silence, neither in silent mode or vibrate https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.selectivesilence&feature=search_result
Settings profile
Followed instructions from http://forums.androidcentral.com/an...pp-lets-you-only-have-certain-calls-ring.html
If post 9 then then phone rings irrespective of number being allowed or not
If post 13 phone does not ring if allowed number, neither in vibration or silent mode.
Partially works:
Auto ring, only if set to vibrate - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.auto.ring&hl=sv
Fully works:
Call filter alarm https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.pezzin.callfilteralarm.free - However it does not have that many options.
Guess I'll use touchwiz blocking mode in the mean time. It's easy to manually trigger, but does not have SMS-text reply and can only be automated on/off between a certain time, which is the same for all days. But I can use silent hours or call filter alarm for that.

Check this app out:
Call Master: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fahrbot.apps.blacklist
Call Master Pro Key: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fahrbot.apps.blacklist.key
Been using that for many years now and it's the best call block app out there but it cost money and it's worth it. But you need root on the phone to use it.
And that is the best way to get rid of that annoying callcenter sellers and other idiots that calling you everyday

From the description it doesn't look like this app will make my phone ring if I have it in vibrate/silent mode. I need everything, mail, chat, other notifcations etc, to be silent. The only way the phone should make noise is if alarm goes off or number on whitelist is calling.
edit: just tried it out, naturally it did not unmute. Installed call master -> gave root permission -> new profile -> create new list -> added exception for number -> actions -> added action Filter calls & SMS -> allow.

No SMS notifications from inside conversation

I recently switched from an S4 to a Note 4, and have been missing lots of incoming SMS messages. I realize now that the S4 would beep any time a new message arrived, but the Note 4 suppresses notifications when you're inside the conversation for which a new message arrives. I can kind of see the logic for this - why would one need the phone to beep if you're already on the screen that's showing you the incoming message? In practice, though, I find that I leave the conversation screen open all the time when I'm not looking at the phone.
Most frequently, I keep the phone on a dock at my desk, hooked up to my KVM switch, so I can use my keyboard/mouse to write messages during the day. After sending a message, I switch back to my main computer/monitor and work over there until the phone beeps at me again. I rely on the SMS notifications to grab my attention, but need to explicitly exit the conversation after sending each message now if I want the beep to occur. The same thing happens when I put the phone in my pocket, holster, on the counter, etc. after sending an SMS. I'm sure I'll develop a habit after a while, but it seems foolish to me that I can't just stay in a conversation and have it beep whenever there's activity. This is the only email/IM/SMS app that I have that behaves this way.
I've tried to force the Messages app to beep at me whenever an SMS arrives, but there doesn't appear to be an option for this. Hopefully, I've just overlooked it, so:
QUESTION: Is there a way to configure the Messages app to beep whenever an SMS arrives, even if I'm already inside the conversation for the new message?
I'm using the stock ROM, no root, the default Messages app that comes on the phone, and a built-in notification sound (i.e. not something custom from the external SD card). Vanilla configuration. Thanks for your help.

In phone app go to settings - call - call alerts . There is option to alert you on notifications. Make sure you have this check.

Just to clarify, when I say "conversation", I mean that I'm reading an SMS thread inside the Messages app - not having a verbal conversation in the Phone app. Assuming that this is understood...
In the "Call alerts" page, I see several settings. Mine are configured as follows (where "+" is checked, and "-" is unchecked):
CALL VIBRATIONS
+ Vibrate when answered
+ Call-end vibration
CALL STATUS TONES
+ Call connect tone
- Minute Minder
+ Call end tone
ALERTS ON CALL
+ Notify during calls
Under the configuration above, would you expect the Messages app to beep when an SMS arrives on the thread that I'm currently reading?

Now i'm not sure. i need to see if in scenario you talking about i have notification, if i do i will explain my settings.
EDIT:
OK. I have notification. In settings in default messenger i have in notification Notification sound ( choose as you wish)
Vibrate +
Repeat message alert ( I got every 10 Min)
Pop-up display +
Lock Screen +
Status Bar +
What im reading messages i got pop-up with sound on top of message app.
But when im reading message and i get message from same person i don't have sound notification. It must be setup by software this way.
Did you find a fix? Mine does the same thing.

I'm still getting the same behavior. Missed several messages yesterday, in fact. This is the first thing I check after every OS update from AT&T, but I guess most people continue to prefer to not be notified when their text messages arrive.
If my screen is on while I'm in a conversation, you're correct, no notification will occur. But if my screen times out (locks) I will get a notification tone. I guess it just assumes you are looking at the screen if it's on and a message comes in.
Not aware of any way to change this.

I think that that's probably the intent. Maybe my habits are different than others', but I'm frequently not looking at the phone when the Messages app is up. Actually, before getting the Note 4 and training myself to switch off of Messages after reading each new text, I predominantly wasn't looking at the screen while Messages was up.
There's probably no one-size-fits-all setting here. It's just too bad that there's not an option to enable/disable audible notifications to fit individual preferences.
Did anyone ever find a way around this? You figure someone would have made an xposed module or something.
What a response.
Your response sounds like We should all be alike and conform.
Text notifications
Try '8sms' ... only text messaging app that I've found that will consistently notify me of incoming texts. Some apps will for a time but then stop doing so. This one has worked well for me.

[Q] Any way to keep the screen from turning on when an incoming text is received?

I like the stock Messages app for its "favorites bar" and the direct-call motion functionality, but i can't stand that it turns the screen on every time a new message comes in. It is a problem when the phone is in my pocket and a message comes in and the contact between my phone and my leg (even through my pocket!) causes my phone to do things - or at least sit there and make noise as it tries to unlock. I'm using Google's Messenger app for the time being, but i don't like it as much. I think this used to be an option in the Messages app on my Note 2. Any suggestions? Thank you,

Notifications and N doze overly agressive will not alert device

On Android N I have noticed the following behavior with notifications on the new N doze, and wanted to share my findings in case others experience issues with the lack of notifications that were not present on 6.0.1 and I had not make zero adjustments for notifications as well or optimization as its called for each app.
At 1:07 AM i received at text and email alert from my bank for a deposit ( I was asleep when this happened ). I woke up at 5:15 AM to find no notification light blinking what so ever for text or email. Picked up the phone and low and behold a G-mail message and a text ( Textra ) was sitting in the notification bar. I set the phone back down and did not and have not touched it as writing.
At 6:11 AM I received an email to my G-mail account, I went and looked at (did not touch) my phone and no notification light, nor did I hear it alert; this is only about an hour or less after setting it down.
I used my G-mail account to send a text message to my device and heard the alert and the notification light was blinking(did not touch).
So far I notice that G-mail will not alert( sound or LED ) after about an hour ( could be less ). I just sent another email to my G-mail @ 6:29 am and no audible alert.
Text messages appear to alert both audibly and visually after this time period, but after some time the visual indicator goes out as noted initially above. ( i was not able to test sending a text to the phone after the 5+ hour period when was not touched to see if it would alert; that currently remains untested.
Just called the phone at 6:41 am and it alerted properly, AND after I hung up the other phone heard heard the generic notification sound, and noticed the notification light is blinking a different color very slowly ( blue is for text messages; white for everything else ).
I picked up the phone and seen all my messages properly displayed in status bar and one additional one about 50 minutes ago , which would have put it in at less than an hour for Instagram sitting in the notification bar.
It appears that this is either a bug or the doze is overly aggressive, or both.
It might be important for people to get notifications, and to completely silence them could cause some people to not receive critical alerts.
I will most likely go back to 6.0.1 shortly as I simply do not like to be NOT notified in less than an hour of inactivity of use on my device.

if you go at battery settings and press the dots on the top right and choose battery optimization then you will be able to choose what apps doze muat not touch
and its probably a bug as i never had such issue. also gmail wont notify unless for main mails. promo, junk etc wont notify you

I am aware of this feature.
I do not really want to go in and do this for every single application when I never had to in the past, that is just silly. I had zero issues with notifications on 6.0.1 as I have stated.
Besides I am sure some alerts are handled by the OS, so then what? DE-optimize all the apps ? NOT! G-mail worked just fine in the past , I never mentioned junk mail in the OP.
I have noticed that notifications take a long time after I did the upgrade. Now I get facebook notifications 20 mins or more late and I picked up my phone this morning and got lots of them.
---------- Post added at 09:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:17 AM ----------
I wiped the cache in recovery and it seems ok now but will have to leave the phone for a while to see if it continues.

I think they borked up the doze feature to no notify users after you set the phone down on battery. Its a pretty big deal for your notifications to go silent just like that.
Poor testing Google
Doze seems to suppress emergency alerts as well.
It alerted on my second device, but never on on 5x with N
Looks like I will be ultimately returning to 6.0.1 until Google can get a clue about alerts

Emergency tone is for an emergency call is placed. it was disable on the device that received the emergency cell broadcast, so that is not it.

Vibrate mode means vibrate for EVERY notification

Has anyone else noticed that when in vibrate mode ALL notifications vibrate regardless of their app settings? It's rather annoying and previous phones weren't like this. My S7e still followed per app vibrate settings (eg mail app). On the s8+ i get a vibrate for every single email i receive regardless of the fact no vibration option is selected in the app.
Seems to be a bit of a bug....
