fastboot integration/alternative - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how can i boot a kernel from ram, or otherwise run a kernel without flashing it. I need to integrate some drivers into the kernel but i am petrified of bricking my phone.
Yes, yes, Odin or heimdall for flashing, I get Odin covers fastboot flash, but is there a fastboot boot function?

I apologize for the lack of info. Id first read up on fastboot and even see if the command lines even exist for what you want to do (searching any and all pertaining to kernels) That will tell you if you can proceed in the direction you want to go whether it be from positive or negative results in searching your desired criteria.

Fastboot commands work just fine for what I need to do, but from what I understand fastboot is not integrated into samsung's download mode. Fastboot boot is the command I need, is there at least an emulator for the note 4 that I can use to test a kernel without flashing?

Yes. I had a SGS before, so I know where you're coming from. Basically it's the same process, you put the zip on the SD and flash it. The difference is that you have to manually flash the boot.img before with fastboot. If you unlocked your bootloader you already sucessfully set up fastboot, so you're done half the way. You can follow the tutorial found here. I do recommend using the official non-touch CWM instead of TWRP, which some people say has random freezes. Be sure to use a cm9 kernel. I use KISS. It's best to understand all the steps in advance so you won't do a careless mistake.

Ok, fastboot means having your phone connected via usb, typing commands into your computer. The hardest part for me was setting it up the first time. I think one of the linked tutorials explains it, otherwise try searching for it on google. Also there are a few threads in the Q&A section which should be of help. Once you have it set up you need to copy the kernel into the fastboot folder on your computer, rename it boot.img and type into the terminal: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Yes, as kernel you use the cm9 one.

Well, if you were to read the entire OP, you would have found out that there's a special boot.img you are supposed to flash, and that if you flash the boot inside the zip, you can say Bye Bye to your device.
Please read threads thoroughly.

i have been cleaning up the thread!! the only time it wasnt there, was for 30minutes earlier!! after the next update there wont be a link to it just a download with the rest of the files....and how long is a piece of string?

Can I Root without any computer connection.

I DO NOT want to use my computer with any command stuff.
My bootloader is unlocked and i have stock recovery.
I tried with all the driver stuff very very confusing. My phone is not even showing up anymore on my computer.
(TOO complicated)
Why can't i just do the same thing with other Samsung Phones-Drag root into system storage then just flash.Easy.

why did they make it sooo hard
In your case I would say just go get a toolkit and use that. There is no way, where you are at, to root your device. You NEED to flash a custom recovery which cannot be done on anything other than a computer to root your device.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614827
The toolkit includes device drivers and will do basically anything you need it to do.

It's really not that hard, actually only a couple commands and pushing some buttons on your phone.
*Plug In Phone*
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
*Volume up* *Power Button*
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery Recovery.img
*Volume Down* *Volume Down* *Power Button*
Install Zip from SD Card - SuperSU.zip.
Reboot.
Done. Takes at most 10 minutes.

Odin isn't used on Nexus devices (as far as I know.) They use the Android standard, which is fastboot.
fastboot oem unlock
That's the command to unlock your bootloader. Be aware, it'll wipe your phone (security measure.)

ODIN actually is built into the device, but I think is actually more complicated than just using fastboot.

If that's all you want to do is root & leave your device on stock you can just temporarily boot a custom recovery & flash the super user.

Question about flashing image with fastboot

I'm going to be exchanging my pixel and getting another one. Just curious so I know for the future.. if I flash the full factory image via fastboot does that relock the bootloader? I'm gonna guess that it doesn't but just wanna make sure.
New to adb and fastboot so I've been reading around like crazy trying to learn. Is the only way to lock again to use the actual lock command in fastboot?
Edit: I'm referring to using the flash-all.bat script
Yes, you will have to re-lock the bootloader. Do it with fastboot in the bootloader.
Although, you don't have to re-lock the bootloader before sending your phone back... Especially since it will have the stock image flashed to it.

No. Flashing the factory image does not relock the bootloader. After you have successfully rebooted, return to the bootloader and use the command: fastboot oem lock

Right click the flash-all script, and choose edit (or something like that) from the drop down menu. In the last line where it says "fastboot -w update..." delete the "-w". Then just use this flash-all.

Correct. Let me ask you, do you have any modifications to your Pixel? Root, TWRP, custom kernel? If not, you'd be better off with ADB sideload.

I have root and that's it. So if I'm understanding correctly, I would put the factory image zip in the platform tools folder and extract it there, open a command window from that folder and run this command fastboot flash-all
Is that correct?

How did you root your phone? Rooting the phone is as simple as flashing patched init_boot.img via fastboot flash init_boot. A lot of users here brick their phones because they patched and flashed the boot.img instead of the init_boot.img.
