Remote Desktop - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Is there a way that I can use my Note 4 to remote control my Dad's Note 2 over the AT&T Network? I want to make sure that my Dad's phone stays up to date when I am not at home. I live in California and my Dad lives in Kentucky. He is not very good at technology and I want to make sure his phone is working properly from long distance and it is hard to get him to understand what I am asking him to do on the phone to make sure it is updated.

[Q] Can Two Devices Run on Same Service?

Okay, the subject is probably terribly worded. What I'm trying to do is essentially to clone my current phone such that two devices ring (and can be answered) when a call comes in on my phone number. As I am frequently finding my phone either misplaced or out of juice, I'm hoping I can wind up where I always have one of the two phones plugged in at my desk so I don't potentially lose business the next time I manage to lose my phone for a couple days.
What I'm running now is Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S3 L710, which has been flashed over to VZW prepaid (donor phone was a Gusto flip phone). In my other hand, I've got this old AT&T Samsung Flight II (sgh-a927). I realize that the ATT 927 isn't likely to work for this, but it's what I'm using to learn with before I try to turn a more viable phone into a pretty paperweight.
So... since I'm remarkably unclear on what terms I should even search for, or if this whole idea is even remotely possible, can anyone point me in the right direction here?
Thanks,

Wifi or wait for LTE?

I'm pretty set on getting the 10.5 S. I'm currently running an ATT LTE Note 8.0 but the lack of updates is way past annoying, especially with the input freezing bug. I like having LTE, I certainly don't want to be completely without it. I'm also still locked in a contract on the Note for another year, the good news is it only costs $10/month so its a minimal issue. So my plan at the his point is to buy the wifi only 10.5 S and keep my note 8 and basically use it as a hot spot. To purchase a hotspot would cost me $20/month so it does make sense to just keep it and use it that way. That can certainly cut down on some portability but I really only use my tablet on LTE in my truck during work so keeping the Note there for for hotspot use is no biggie. And if I do want to take a tablet with me I can always just take the Note 8. Oh, and I cannot use my phone as a hotspot because its a work phone and is locked from doing so.
I guess my point in all of this is that I dont want to enter into another LTE tablet with potential problems that will never be fixed by the cell provider and be handcuffed with a locked bootloader in the community. Atleast when you go wifi only you know Samsung is going to take care of issues and you will stay closer to the front of the line of Android development.

Personally I'm just going to get the wifi version since there will be wifi at the places I mainly go to and in worst case scenario I can tether using my S4. I really don't see a need to get the LTE version and pay more monthly (unless when the devs here find a way to make calls with this and you want to make calls and stuff?)
Why not just tether it to your phone? Tethering to another android device usually doesn't count against a tethering limit.
It has tended to be the case in my Samsung tablet experience that there tends to be more options when it comes to rooting and custom ROMs with the wifi varients vs. carrier tied lte variants. A personal example: I first got an lte AT&T Note 8 due to a promotion that they had at the time. That tablet ended up getting stolen, and I replaced it with the wifi version. Looking back, while it sucked shelling out extra cash for a replacement tablet, my experience with the Note 8 was MUCH better due to the ability to easily root it and a couple of really nice custom ROMs that are immeasurably better than the stock ROM, while I don't think there even are any ROMs that can be flashed to the AT&T locked-down version. I think it's rootable, but that's a relatively recent development for a device that's been out as long as the Note 8 (I think, there's a thread on the subject but I haven't looked at it).
Of course, the my take on the matter is really only relevant if you plan on rooting / modifying the device, or at least having the ability to do so, the wifi variant (or international lte version, I guess) seems to generally be the way to go.
I'm lusting hard after the Tab S 8.4, but I'm going to wait a while and keep an eye on this subforum mostly to see how development goes, and a price drop or sale would be nice when that starts to happen for these. If I end up getting this tablet (seems likely, the specs are pretty much exactly what I was hoping for in the TabPro 8.4), I anticipate that I'll end up getting the wifi version, even if I have the opportunity to get the lte version for the same price (I'm on T-mobile now and they had a promotion where they were selling the lte variants of the Samsung tablets that they had (which sucked when I checked it out) for the same price as the wifi variant with 2 GB free data or something, but not sure if that's perpetual). I now have a Note 3 and Note 8, and I really only use the tablet at home, but if I wanted to use it elsewhere I would just tether it to my phone with unlimited data, and all is right with the world
tl;dr IMO the wifi variant is the way to go so that your device isn't tied to any carrier and likely more modifiable, if you care about that. If this was a major decision that you were making that I completely solved and/or you're ridiculously generous, PM me for my address for pre-ordering purposes
I'd wait to see if the devices are rootable. I imagine that if the specs are close enough, I'd go with a Nexus 8 for the dev support. Failing that, go for the GPE version of Galaxy S.

I would love to see a GPE version of the Galaxy Tab S LTE. I don't know why it's so hard to find an Android tablet with LTE that isn't owned by the carriers so I can get decent updates. All the international versions never support the proper LTE bands. The Nexus 7 LTE is the exception. I also have the AT&T Note 8.0 and the lack of updates is more than annoying.

[Q] The most stupid idiotic thing ever!!

Have just changed network to three mobile (UK), because they have great all you can eat data phone tarrif.
I also just bought replacement n1520 after the old one broke and samsun wont honor waranty.
They wont let me use the internet on the phone as they say its a tablet not a phone, and i need to get data sim which i wont be able to make phone calls!
aparantly 5.7" is ok but 8" is too big for a screen.
this is nutts three wont allow the n5100/n5120 to be used as designed.
£300 out of pocket on phone and now tied into 12 month contract.
anybody know any way to get the data to work?

Used a sim from a working phone and got the EE error after unlocking my ATT LTE Note 8.0.
Found a booth at the mall and found you need to get a data only SIM for tablets... Tested on Virgin in Scotland and worked fine, don't like Virgin. Soon I will be going to Amsterdam to pick a plan and service plus the SIM is cheaper as well.

I can confirm that the phone works great on Virgin as i was conected to their network prior to joing three.
have now escalted to exc office and it has been confirmed they have no plans to enable the galaxy note 8 to be used on Three
I too have a Note 8 N5120 and absolutely thrilled using it with Gear1 etc...like you I was on Three and was blocked data, so both me and the wife cancelled the Direct Debit and are now both with o2 (amazing 4G) with a 5 Gig of data plan, unlimited calls and texts, both comes to around £50 a month, sim only for both mind as we already had phones.
I tend to use speakerphone a lot more than using voice from the watch as they are both audible to the public and quality is better from phone anyway so the Gear is neither here nor there I suppose, but crack on with the Note 8 its a fantastic device to use as a phone.
As for Three, wake up and smell the coffee, listen to what people want!!!!
Simply call them up like I did and explain you are not paying a single penny for the contract as they block your Note 8 from data, if everyone done this they might change this stupid rule..
Is there any way to spoof the identity of the device so three think it's a galaxy s5 or something?

afaik it detects the IMEI number, so they must have 2 lists, phone IMEI's and tablet IMEI's....1 list is blocked and the other isnt...

OK, here is what I think will do well for you...
You can open up the firefox browser and get into outlook, to click on the links for both phone and tablet.
Ye must install this to your phone... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.texty.sms
Setup your phones app before installing this to yer tablet... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mightytext.tablet
Then setup the tablet to sync and send txts as if you are on your phone.

This method is amazing! Thank you so much. IDK if you're very experienced/intouch with VoiP, but I after trying out the app you suggested I noticed an option to make a call. After trying it I realized it sends a signal to the phone to intiate a call. Which was awesome too, especially since I have my BT Headset always on. But then the snowball started rolling and then I though... wouldn't it be amazing to get rid of the phone all together. So I had a couple of questions. Can Data plans be activated on regular tabs like mine (Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5110) ordoes one has to have the 3g/4g model of tablet for it to have its own Data Plan? Next, assuming one could have a tablet with its on Dataplan... Are there any VoiP with reasonable monthly charges and reliable service that will allow calls/txt to not only other users of the same app (like skype to skype) but from app to landline etc?

The WIFI only version GT-N5110 has no internal capabilities for data plans, The GT-N5100 and the GT-N5120 both have internal abilities for data plans.
One option for home use is a Verizon share hot spot that is a box for Internet only and requires a data plan. As for portability, you could get car DC to AC adapter that will allow you to use while driving. As long as Verizon towers are available. You would then need to use some Internet phone service that fits your budget and requirements. Knowing that Verizon is limiting data even though they are doubling their LTE data rate, makes me skeptical on how much you will be able to use monthly even though you have a fast connex.
That is as far as I am with such a question, there are other types of data plans and share devices, Sprint seems to be the best deal for getting what you want, but it will be a wee costly, and not all areas are Sprint friendly.
Now if you can get a great deal on family shared data, you can look into getting dual hot spot devices that will double your data rate when setting them up to be bridged, via a robust router... Home routers are limited to one connection to the internet, so looking for such a router will be in the $150.00+ range. Depending on the brand and model, you can have 1 to 4 data connex. That is if your budget allows for such an extravagant option. Portability will be limited to transferring one device from the bridged network when needed, thus allowing internet to be active at home.
As for skype... they do allow calls to land line... but I have tested Text Plus with my AT&T version in the UK. It works well for an app, and even gives you a real phone number for txting and calls. There is a charge for calls but depending on how much you talk, it may less expensive than $9.00 per month VOIP options with apps or hardware to plug in between your existing network.
What you're considering is totally doable, but you don't have the right device. My previous device was a Verizon branded Tab 7.7 that I used as my primary phone via VoIP on their LTE network. Overall, it worked 80-85% as well as a cellphone. When I accidentally destroyed it, I replaced it with the N5100, which I have on a smartphone plan with AT&T.
In order to be a practical replacement for a cellphone, the tablet itself must have built in connectivity, otherwise you'd also have to carry around a hotspot device. Dealing with two devices, battery issues, etc. makes that impractical in comparison to just using a smartphone.
There are many VoIP options, and the cost range from free to expensive. It depends on your needs. Most allow calling and texting to anyone anywhere. I can't make specific suggestions without knowing more about your needs, but I'll describe the process. The first issue issue is the phone number and who has control of it. Do you have a number that you're attached to or are you ok with any assigned number. This influences the second issue, do you want an all in one integrated solution like Skype, or a modular solution, which allows more flexibility. Third, is this going to be used across multiple devices and what kind are they. Lastly, how robust/reliable does the setup need to be (ie. is it your primary phone or just something to play with).
I was initially attracted to using a tablet as a phone to save money. Tablets cost less than smartphones and data only plans are cheaper than smartphones plans. Then I quickly got addicted to the screen size. A tablet makes almost every task easier or more enjoyable compared to doing it on a regular size phone. But using a tablet as a phone did have drawbacks. The lack of an ear speaker meant always having a headset readily available (and charged) or using the speakerphone. Most VoIP apps drained the battery rather quickly. Call quality is highly dependent on network latency, no problem on WiFi, more of an issue when out and about.
I couldn't go back to using a regular phone as my primary device. I'm not saving any money by going this route, but for me it's worth the premium to have a tablet with built-in telephony capability on a smartphone plan. The N5100 is an awesome 8" smartphone.*

Anyone went back to their Note 3?

I love the note 4 but I get one pet peeve. The damn single antenna that prevents me from using the Web when you're on the phone.
This is a major concern for me since I use my phone as part of the home automation. My Gate and Garage is controlled with my phone so if I get to the front of the house and I'm on the phone, I have to get off the phone to get in or get out of the car and use the keypad.
I think this is a MAJOR BS of sprint

It has nothing to do with Antennas..it is the Spark and tri-band that causes this: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Spri...andle-calls-and-data-at-the-same-time_id54789
There are ways around this but it would require further tower upgrades from Sprint.
Yup, all spark phone will be like this. The up side is better faster LTE coverage and better battery life since there is only 1 cell radio operating at a time. It will take VOIP (and a new phone since note 4 doesn't support VOIP) before sprint will provide simultaneous voice and data again. So, if you really need simultaneous voice and data no spark for you!

Yeah its kinda annoying at times... But it's not really a deal breaker. I'll stick with the Note 4. Can't downgrade at this point is how I see it.
I agree. Ofcourse I skipped the note 3 altogether because I wasn't eligible for upgrade at the time it was released and I heard som leaked info about the Note 4 so I decided to wait. I really do miss simultaneous voice & data but I don't talk on my phone for great lengths anyway so it's not that big of a deal to me.
