I'm going to buy a new mobile... M8 or Z3? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I've just sold my OnePlus One due to cr*p support and updates (I was getting like 7h SOT when it was running KK, after lollipop update I used to get 4h sot) and now I'm looking for a new device. I have ~400€ budged and I found M8 and Z3 at almost the same price.
Which is better? Which do you prefer and why? I need users opinion in their daily usage, I know the specs of both phone and I know that HTC has a crappy camera and lower battery.
I think I'll send the phone back to HTC/Sony to change the battery every year and I need the phone to last for about 2 years.
My usage:
-I mainly use the front camera, if I need to take serious photos I bring my reflex with me
-Social
-Email.. email email email
-Music (spotify with headphones and rarely through the speakers)
-I want the gold/rame colour (not necessary but preferred)
-Sometimes heavy gaming (me and my mates play Real Racing 3 online)
-I need the battery to last the whole day (I can't freeze app like whatsapp and email, I need them also in energy save mode)
Can you help me, please? If you know other devices in my budged range please name them (no iphone, screen so small and iphone 6 is out of range and I wouldn't be able to deny facebook to access my position. and no windows phone, had htc 8s for about 1 week and the instantly sold... too close system)
I forgot: I don't really need custom roms... Just xposed and root (for eq.).
PPS: is Htc m8s good as m8? It has camera and battery upgraded.

I had a xperia Z1 (Pretty the same as Z2 (better screen) and Z3 (better battery life)) for a year and a half, it was a very good handset but deffective, it had touchscreen issues, I've been forced to replace the flaps and the battery in order to keep running it out. On the bright side I loved the camera and the battery life wich was good until it fail, So i don't trust in Sony anymore.
I moved on and now I own a M8 and it's awesome, great display, great spekers (I wasn't used to listen music trough them but belive me if you get one you will love it), the battery life is good; even with the short mAh It runs out till I get home, maybe the camera is not as good (or near) as the xperia but it's not a deal breaker.
And if you compare it with the Z3+ or M9 i'ts not far from them since S810 is a fail. Even Z3 and M8 had proven to be better overall with the S801
I don't use my phone for playing games so i can't help you with that point
Both of them have energy saving mode (sony have stamina and ultra stamina but the last one won't let you use whatsapp or mail)
Both of them can get root and xposed
If i were you i would go for the HTC, I bet you'll not dissapointed

Thank you. I had the HTC m7 and the only issue I had was the battery life.
Purchasing M9 or z3+ is not worth due to overheating issue and because they are out of my budget. I hate the xperia ui.... Wtf have they done? If I go with xperia custom theme and launcher are a must.

Bump! please

Z3 for:
-battery life
-IP68
-3GB of RAM
-camera
M8 for:
-speakers
-build quality
-community support
I am for M8 because:
Z3 has known thermal issues. Mine had some building failures and IMHO it seems really fragile with that glass and thin aluminium. Unlocking bootloader makes you lose DRM related functionalities. LCD is brighter on Z3 but contrast is higher on M8.

Never play games.
My SOT is 4h 30m on average. Can easily reach night without charge.

4h 30m SOT without games is not much for me. I use to play in the morning. So z3 will be a good choice I think...

[Q] LG G3 vs Xperia Z2

Hi , guys , i want new phone for next 3 years. I am not planning to root it by any chance. I am done with that. I want phone for 550 dollars max. Tried Note 3 ,amazing but camera weak in low light. Going to swap it for G3 or Z2. Now i have to decide. Want reliable phone , no rooting , fast and snapp , 5,2 inch or more , one of the best cameras , price 550 dollars max.
Thank you.
If its not theZ3, go with the G3. Z2 is "obsolete" in tech world. (Oh i'm so gonna get flamed for saying that xD)
We'll be getting Lollipop in a couple of days, its fast and snappy, and the phone has a great camera, great battery and a great screen.
Lowlight isnt impressive, but then again, which phone Lumias and the new iPhones aside is...?
If Battery life is your main concern, Then Go for Z3(Dont buy Z2)
Z3 Battery Endurance Can Differ from 5Hours SOT on heavy usage to 6.30Hours SOT on Moderate
Battery Life on G3 is Average. .. Coming from Moto E which gives me Atleast 5-5.30Hours SOT ON HEAVY USAGE, I'M disappointed In LG G3.. Feels Like I'M Regretting buying this...
Battery Problems Aside, It A very Good Phone/Phablet
I own a Z2. In a few weeks my wife will be eligable for an upgrade and will have my Z2 whilst I get a new phone.
Z2 has great battery life, easily the best of any android phone I've had (About 8 since HTC Hero) and camera is great too.
Low light is way better than any previous phone I've had. In a slightly dark room the photo comes out looking brighter than it looks to the human eye. Yes you'll get noise but way better than say One X or Nexus 4.
I'm thinking of getting a G3 rather than a Z3, for following reasons:
Looks. I find the Sony phones a bit boring. And G3 bezel impresses me.
Removable cover. This means I can replace the battery. My wife's One X is 2.5 years old and battery is rubbish now, it needs replacing. Battery life will steadily decline after 1 year so think how long u will have phone.
I'd say camera is fairly similar so not much difference there.
Battery life is prob better for Z2 but its rare for me not to have mine charging in work and I rarely have to have it last a long time without charging anyway.
So for me, a G3.
But you'd never complain if you got a Z2 instead.

[Q] Buying HOX now?

Hello everyone,
I got bored with my xperia z1 compact and now I want phone with sense 4 (possibilities are: one x, one s, sensation).
I red a lot about faulty batteries on hox and that hox+ is little better because better battery, but one x is, to me, one of the most beautiful designed phones ever + there is sense 4 which is THE most beautiful UI to me, and I want that combination
Also I found several used hox's with hox+ battery installed and their owners says screen-on time is around 4 hours on kitkat which is totally ok to me, battery life on my z1 compact is around 3.5 hours.
I know One m7 have all these problems corrected but that phone is really a lot uglier to me than hox and I don't want sense's 5 minimalism either.
Is it wise to buy this phone (used)?

I'm using One X almost 3 years (bought it same day as it came to my country) and I'm pretty sure that it's the best choice (both X and X+) if you want Sense 4. I'm still happy having One X and not gonna buy a new one anytime soon
The only cons of One X is speakers - they aren't loud (ofc you can install mod to make them louder, but still, not as loud as M7)
Second "bad thing" you can solve easily: overheating and battery life (solve it by undervolting cpu and gpu). When I just bought my One X, i did a video playback test without undervolt and with undervolt (but didn't underclock anything) and tested how much time it can play an 720p video. Results were insane - without undervolt i've got 5h50min and with undervolt 6h20min. Also without undervolt CPU temp was around 50*C, battery temp 30*C, and with undervolt CPU temp jumped down to just 30*C and battery temp was just 25*C (I've been testing in 20*C environment). WHATCHA WAITIN' FOR? Just buy it!
Thank you for long answer
Speakers are not important to me at all, but sound through earphones are, how is sound on stock earphones and with mods like ones on ViperX rom?
Is sound loud enough and clear enough, I had sensation and sound was really good, I don't want it to be inferior to sensation

Well, sound through earphones sounds like it must, according to GSM Arena quality must be even better than Sensation's output
From GSM Arena:
Frequency response with headphones attached (lower difference is better):
HTC One X: +0.10, -0.10 (0.10+0.10=0.20)
HTC Sensation: +0.71, -0.15 (0.71+0.15=0.86)
0.20 < 0.86, so One X's quality with earphones must be even better
Ohhh that is really nice then, now I am even more determinated to buy hox

Screen Drains battery really fast !

I bought my z5 premium 4 days ago ! and the battery seems really **bleep** ! the full charge drains in like 3 hours onscreen time ! the screen takes too much of the battery usage 40% ! on my last z2 it took like 3% ! what happened ! does sony lied about the battery life time ! i really paid alot in this phone and i dont see any advantage in battery ! i'm a very heavy user and i though that this phone will satisfy my needs( i tried the stamina mode but it doesn't work for me because i want to recieve notifcations from social apps while screen is off ) i need a fast solution or i will return the phone back ..

This was yesterday
Full 100% brightness, with adaptive of course
Location services on high accuracy
WiFi on all the time
Mediocre data reception (2 bars mostly)
Heavy browsing.
I'd say it's pretty good considering the battery hogging 4k screen and SD810
My screen was 73% on battery stats
I am happy with SOT and in general the battery performance (note I used stamina few times only just for the test). It is much more better compared with my sg note 4 exynos. (But camera is not )
my first day with my z5 premium and big disapointed about the battery ... heavily dropped down since hard using ... will be testing stamina mode ...
I have to say the battery life on my Z5P is awful! I'm lucky to get half a day and I used to get at least a full day with the same usage on my Z2 and Z3.

Never expect the same battery life you had on Z2 and Z3. Z5P has that 4k screen and the power sucking black hole, aka Snapdragon 810

Well yes I will expect the same battery life if not more as that's what Sony are advertising! A two day battery life, same as previous models.
The screen is only 1080p unless you're watching video.
Half a day is NOT what I would consider satisfactory.

I can agree on the part about 2 days battery life like advertised, with that lovely "*" at the end of the claim.
The screen however, even though it runs mostly at 1080p the pixel count is 4 times higher than a genuine 1080p panel. Those extra pixels will still need power to work, no matter the resolution.

z5 ---> z5 Premium?

Hello coming from the Z5, i had to say that's the worst mobile i had in the z series line up. May be i got a faulty handset? poor battery life and it was a mini heater. So, how is the z5 premium in these two aspects of battery life & temperature?
Cheers

I came to z5p from z2 (looks like you have owned it too) Average battery life of my z5p is almost same, but in heavy tasks (games, intensive internet surfing) z5p discharging faster than z2. And when I read books or listen the music z5p works noticeably longer than z2. Its about 30% in my experience. Heating is lower than z2 too.
By the way in FW 32.2.A.0.224 sony promised to optimize energy consumption and put back stamina mode.

Z2 & Z3 were the best in terms of battery stand by, so i am not comparing with that :highfive:
So, heating is less which is a great thing.
Also i heard after the latest updates, almost everything is displayed in 4k, is it true?
:good:

I dont know, lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Is any way how can I check it? I doubt that this can be seen with the naked eye in a 5.5" display

No, mostly 1080p. The phone would lag doing simple tasks, hell, it even lags when I emulate 4k from ADB.
Z5P does a good job managing heat. I think the dual heat sinks and thermal paste are doing their job
And regarding 4k, all 4k pixels are firing but resolution may not be 4k lol if that makes sense. 4k resolution becomes available in album, movies, and possibly Mozilla Firefox (I couldn't tell by looking at it but 4k option is available on yt and takes forever to buffer so I'm assuming it is?)
Well, i went ahead and made the purchase. Chrome looks beautiful and the mobile seems to be better in terms of battery life & heat management compared to the z5.
Thank you guys.

Migrating from ZTE Axon 7 - Couple of questions

Hello there!
I am currently active on the ZTE Axon 7 side of things. I initially bought the Axon because of its speakers, its loud DAC/Amp for headphones and its sleek metal build. I succumbed to "beauty" over functionality and want to make a leap back.
My choices are the OnePlus 3 (not T! it's too expensive) and the Moto Z Play.
My main usage is around 50% Whatsapp, 30% Reddit (via Sync), 10% Youtube, 10% Spotify. I have no games installed and I use the camera occasionally for shooting a picture in Whatsapp...
Will the SD625 be enough for me empirically?
How is the sound output via 1)Speakers, 2) Headphones in comparison to phones like the Nexus 5, LG G4, Nexus 5X (those are phones I know and heard)?
How "easy" is it to unlock the Bootloader for european users?
How fast and accurate is the fingerprint sensor?
For Germans: Does the turbocharger come included in the box?
People who got the Z Play and the OP3: What is your opinion?
I tried to be as specific as possible and hope that I will be able to contribute more once I make my decision.

Hi there,
The snapdragon 625 has enough power for your use cases, actually more than enough. I haven't found an app or game it couldn't handle until now.
Speakers: Compared to my Nexus 4, far better. Very clear and loud, but I can't speak for other models you mentioned.
Bootloader: Unlocking the bootloader is fairly easy. Register on the motorola site, boot phone into fastboot and obtain the device key. Submit it and Moto sends your unlock key via e-mail. But keep in mind you will loose your warranty.
Fingerprint sensor: Unlocks really fast (less than a second). I can't compare the accuracy as it is my first device with a sensor, but until today it always unlocked
Turbocharger: I bought the retail version from amazon.de and it was included.
The OP3 probably has a larger developer base, so if you are into custom roms the OP3 might be a better choice. On the other hand, you won't find a phone with a better battery life than the Z Play. My phone visits the charger every three days ...
Have a look at this thread for more pros and cons.
Unlocks faster than it takes to swipe up on the screen it seems.
Because of battery life, I upgraded 2 times. First from Moto G 2014 to Moto X Play, then Moto Z Play.
If you ask regarding phone quality or listening to something different than music, fine. The Z Play is a wonderful device, it's fast, it stays cool when gaming, it has every sensor you could need, components are very good, everything's working together great saving battery. You can't plug the charger the wrong way because it's USB-C! I like it very much and would always recommend it.
The sound of the Moto Z Play is good. But if you search for something to play music via loud speaker, never take a device without stereo. For music the sound of Moto G 2014 which has stereo speakers is so much better.
A colleague has the Sony X Compact X and is very confident, this maybe an option. I don't like Sony, they like to restrict users, they implement a different GUI for Android, they delete some functionality RIP (raster image processing) when rooting. But if you ask about sound and refer to music, you may have a look at it.
The other devices I don't know, and I didn't hear the loudspeaker of the Sony. I don't have the comparison you want, but just wanted to tell you my experience. Hope it helps.
You may have a look at the speaker mod. Or take some external speaker, the Moto Z Play supports aptX which makes Bluetooth sound great (of course the other device has to support it too to make it work).
Thank you for the answers! I'm not that much into custom Roms, but the original software on the Axon 7 is so bad, that is was absolutely necessary.
How is the software on the Z Play? I hear that Moto usually updates pretty fast and keeps it stock.
Before the MZP I had an OP3 as a daily driver - it died after two months, the touchscreen just stopped working out of nowhere. The only thing I preferred the OP3 over the MZP is the design and, maybe, the camera.
Sound: OP3's output (3.5mm) seemed to be a little bit louder, but not better in any way. The MZP wins the speaker battle (front-facing ftw!).
Performance: Despite having half the RAM and a much less powerful SoC I feel that the MZP performs way smoother, especially multi tasking works much better (sic!).
Battery: OP3 struggled to get me over 1.5 days, MZP reachs up to 4 days and 3 on a regular basis.
Turbocharger: I'm from Switzerland, so not sure about DE, but I got the turbocharger included. Pretty sure it's the same for Germany.
Software: Had some bugs @OP3, but that may have changed in the meantime. Overall it's communty is much bigger - but I don't really care about custom ROMs when the phone comes with (nearly) stock Android as the MZP does.
Updates: In terms of pace I would give this point to the OP3 - but they had to deliver fastly to troubleshoot all the bugs, so...
Features: The MZP comes with a bunch a really cool and useful software features. Just check out the Moto Actions.
So, overall I'd definitely go with the MZP again anytime.
I went from Axon 7 to OnePlus 3 to Moto Z Play. The Axon 7 had frustrating Software, no development, very annoying capacitive buttons, and an annoying curved back (didn't sit flat on tables). The OnePlus 3 had great software and tons of development, but speakers sucked and battery life was worse (although still enough to make it through most days without charging mid day). The Z play has awesome stock software and plenty of development, good front facing speaker, insane battery life, flat back, mods (love my speaker mod and leather back), and performance is just as good as the oneplus 3 and Axon 7. Next to each other, the OnePlus 3 was noticeably faster than the Axon, but the oneplus 3 and Moto z play are identical.
I would never go back to an 800-series CPU again. Having unlimited battery life, a phone that never ever heats up no matter what, and is just as smooth as the fastest phones on the market is wonderful. The SD625 is marketed as a "mid-range CPU", but considering it's the only cpu other than the SD 820/1 on the 14nm process, it's really a flagship CPU that prioritizes efficiency over performance. Can't wait for the 10nm SD635!
Unlocking bootloader is easy for everyone (except Verizon models), fingerprint reader is faster than the Axon but a little slower than the OnePlus 3. Camera is worse than both (you didn't ask about that, but if that's very important to you, the OP3 camera is really really good). The Moto gestures and ambient display are really useful and work very well. Front speaker on the Z Play is tinny at high volume but way better than the OP3 speaker. Build quality is excellent on all 3 phones. I can't tell any difference using headphones between the OP3 and the Z Play, but neither are as good as the Axon 7 was. The stock software on the Z Play is better than the pixel or nexus. OnePlus 3 Software is better if you care about customization out of the box. If you don't care, the Z Play software is better.
Thanks so much to the last 2 replies, this made my choice a lot easier.
The camera on the mzp is about as good as the 5x but nowhere near the G4. Sound is a bit better than the 5x and G4 but nothing stunning. Hardware is way better than lg which is failure prone. Exchange services on the Moto are good and better than Google AOSP which are worthless but lg services are better than Moto's. I'm impressed with the one plus 3t. Awesome hardware if you want a VR capable phone. The mzp is the perfect workhorse. Amazing battery and never feels slow.
I currently have the oneplus3, Axon 7, and Nexus 6p.. I am thinking about downsizing to only have the z play because the sd 625 is amazing with power efficiency and is a strong enough processor for anything a phone needs to do. Gaming, Taking some pictures, 2 day battery life, plus it's water resistant (proof...?) Saw a video of a dude leaving it under water for an hour with no damage!

I went from the Axon 7 to Z Play and I'm not looking back. The best decision I ever did. Software was weird on the Axon, capacitive buttons were easy to miss and some other small things. The only thing better was the display's scratch resistance and the camera glass too.
Sent from my Moto Z Play using Tapatalk
Listening to music using headphones. OnePlus 3 is a strict no no. The sound signature of Moto z play via headphone is excellent - I was pleasantly surprised. It is deep and loud even though it doesnot have any dedicated DAC.
Battery life in z play is insane. SOT - 7 to 8 hours easy even with nougat update.
The UI is super smooth and clean.
Moto z play is perhaps the most underrated phone.
I agree completely. I also came from the axon 7. The Moto z play is gonna be a hard phone to quit!!! And I was one to switch phones every 3 months.
Oh, I forgot to tell: I made the switch and am not looking back
Love the gestures, SOT is around 5-6 hours, on my Axon I had like 2.5 days.
I feel like people with thosei nsane SOT times (10+ hours) are using it permanently and letting the screen on at just idle.
My phone only has 5hours SOT but lasts around 5-6 days because it is always in standby

So what did you get? I just got me the Moto Z Play after so much research. I gave my dad a MOTO G5 Plus for his birthday just to see how the SD625 performed and that thing convinced me it was lag free and snappy (low light camera sucks big time though on the G5). I had bad experiences with SD615/617 with previous devices I owned like the Idol 3S. It was just a lag fest and slow downs on those devices. Don't know if the 2ghz or the 14nm or the 933mhz DDR3 or a combination of all 3 that made a drastic change in performance on the SD625 over the SD615 but so far it is a completely different beast. Was about to get the OP5 but found an open box Z play for a really good price and could not pass it up. I'm coming from a Moto X Pure. I was sick and tire of the pure's battery life, and the micro lags here and there when it started to heat up. I loved the dual speakers but oh well, the single speaker on the play is loud enough and is front facing. The AMOLED is just beautiful, no WIFI AC like the pure but I don't even transfer large files over wifi to my desktop. So don't care. I haven't tested the cameras yet, and won't upgrade to nougat - I like Xposed. Will come back and drop a line or two after I use this device for a couple of weeks.
It would be downgrade

I had Axon 7 and I had OnePlus 3, and now I'm using Moto Z Play,
Only thing better in Z Play is batter and everything ends there.
Axon 7 have beautiful display, Sound from headphones and speakers are not match, performance was also superior, only thing I felt inferior was Camera but Z Play is no good IMO, I'm also Using HTC U11 so It is snappy for most part (Z Play) but I often see slow downs, and for my Z Play call speaker was a downgrade as well. what I like about Z Play is batter and Moto Display.
IMO OnePlus 3 will be better purchase than Moto Z Play.
