Force GPU rendering - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I owed a Note 4 and I remembered checking off "force gpu rendering" under developer option would smooth out the TouchWiz UI so I decided to try it out on the G4 and so far I'm noticing a lot more snapping while navigating using Nova or the LG launcher.
Anyone else checking off force gpu rendering noticing any differents?
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk

I always had it checked from Samsung too. I just unchecked to see if any difference with Nova and will check back in a little

Difference is night and day indeed. But is it affecting something else?

Theoretically forcing GPU rendering uses more RAM and doesn't give any positive feature. In adreno GPUs forcing GPU to render UI would make it more smooth, but thats all. I suggest to uncheck it, for free RAM is always needed

With that om i still have 1.3 gig free ram left ... Good enough for me lol

Yes for me also no problem.... FB Messenger loads way faster. Typing text and scrolling in LG UX settings goes buttersmooth.

I meant to say "Check on" in the OP... But yes having a check on is definitely an improvement.
I may after all keep the G4

I would imagine turning this setting on will make the phone take a noticeable hit in the battery life department.

It depends if you have good GPU(e.g. latest adreno) and High End phone with a lot of RAM you should check it on, if you have bad GPU(e.g adreno 200) and Low End phone with not much RAM then you should check it off

I'm writing about the LG G4. I turned it on when I first got the phone.
I always wondered why the phone lags so much. Chrome was the worst one; scrolling was horrible.
Then I tried turning it off and well... all lags I had gone away.
But on all my previous phones I had it on and had no problems.

All you are going to do is to force GPU rendering on very few app where developper has specificaly asked their app not to use GPU because they know there are issues while its on...
All the other apps allready use GPU rendering.

[Q] GPU Acceleration

Been thinking about this for a while. Exactly what type of apps benefit the most from having GPU Acceleration enabled and what type of apps have bad side-effects from having it enabled? I noticed that if you have it enabled and try to click on the weather graph in the "News&Weather" app it produces a foreclosure.

Hi,
I take you mean "force GPU acceleration"?
The setting in the dev section of the phone just forces it on, it doesn't "enable" it...
What I can think of is "old" games and graphic intense apps, not supported and developed anymore ... or very rarely apps that don't support this GPU.

You're right I did mean to put "force GPU acceleration" lol. It just seemed weird to me that it borks the weather graph in the News&Weather app and causes it to force close. I've had it enabled for a while then I disabled it didn't really see any difference in most apps[games & everyday apps] I've tried.
Double Post
Yeah I just left it off and I never had any problems ... if there EVER occurs to be any lag or something in a graphic intense app I'll turn it on.
As long as there aren't any problems, I'll just leave it off, I don't think there is much benefit, if at all, for 99,9% of the apps
Try Facebook without gpu acceleration just scroll down and look at the frame rate its just not smooth. Enable gpu acceleration swipe Facebook off from task and do the same scrolling again.
By scrolling I mean. Flick your finger and let go.... difference is massive in smoothness . If you can't see it theres clearly something wrong with your eyes

2D GPU aceleration doubts

Hi, what is the advantages and disadvantages of enable GPU acceleration 2D in development options?
That is a developer option for a reason. It leads to instability in some apps and benefits in others. The majority of the apps, it leads to instability.

not true. it does force some apps to use hardware acceleration instead of software acceleration, but it does not lead to instability. it will make ui animations and scrolling smoother overall.

But apps that are smooth without the option ticked ( twitter for example ) become laggy after enabling the option. This is what I meant by *instability*

Two other people aside from me have android phones on ICS or JB in my office. Last week we all agreed to enable force 2d rendering.
Nobody is complaining about upset apps, and everyone complains less about their battery life (esp my friend with an evo 3d, worst BL ever on that device). My results aren't very scientific, especially with regard to battery life, but we def haven't experienced any app related issues.
Also miui has smoother animations on the lock screen and in other parts of the ROM. V4 Lock screen was choppy before, but now is very smooth.

My experience with the option on has been a negative one. It all depends on the apps you have installed.

The SiriusXM app locks the F up and freezes the entire phone for me. No 2D for this kid!
Never encountered a problem with an app with that option enabled. Always had it enabled. Then again I am not an app person so I do not use many apps at all. Some of the apps I have the option definitely helps with the smoothness in scrolling. WhatsApp is one of them I believe.

That is misleading. It can lead to instability in apps. The fact that you cannot choose the option for each app...that leads to general instability across the board.
Unless you don't use your phone for apps.
Not all apps perform better forcing acceleration.
Google made that abundantly clear with Project Butter in JB. They use acceleration from both GPU and CPU. Forcing acceleration removes CPU acceleration for the app as well.
That said, some of it is placebo too. Obviously most apps are closed source, but I wonder how many people are calling forced acceleration faster on apps, that have already been compiled with GPU acceleration to be used? Its literally just a checkbox to enable when building.
Try flipboard with and without GPU. Open a link within the app and you will see a huge difference.

Flipboard works perfectly smooth with me not touching the Developer options. Probably because it was compiled with acceleration enabled.
Never underestimate the power of placebo. People will defend it with their dying breath.
The apps meant to be accelerated is, those who aren't I believe doesn't benefit from the option... It just makes the app working in ways it wasn't built for

You are 100% correct. The instability issues crop up because how the app was coded does not work properly with acceleration. This obviously isn't all apps, but certainly is some. I *think* the reasoning that not all apps are accelerated is for backwards compatibility. That, or the app simply runs better with the CPU pushing it and not the GPU. Google employees have posted in the past that some things simply work better with the CPU.
There are cases where it does make the app more smooth and all - but there's a caveat: some apps may break. For instance, the news and weather widget - tap the temperature scale and you're supposed to get a precipitation reading... that glitches out.
And for that, I turned it off cause I don't know what other apps get affected by it. Personally, I DO notice a difference in the app's performance.
On jelly bean, btw...despite project butter doing its "thang".

(Q) CHUNKENESS (LAG) on all roms and stock....why?

This rom when installed correctly blows stock out of the water. Add the Nova launcher..and tweak the settings...and you will see exactly what I mean.Use the latest TWRP..and wipe correctly...and you won't want to go back to stock...ever.
He has a new update coming soon...which will add even more to it.

No issues here with any of 3 different roms. What apps are you running or is it like this immediately after flashing? sounds like something is running in the background causing your problem. Is media scan running constantly? Need more info on what is going on in the background to diagnose.

Maybe try to reduce the Animated Scale setting under Settings - Developer Options from 1x to 0.5x or below? Toggle GPU rendering setting in there as well.
I also agree that a lot is dependent on your launcher. Nova is good to compare too *only* if you optimize it's settings to set all to "Faster than light"

I'm on the newest version of CleanRom. I much prefer it to stock. There are a lot of features I can't live without. Still, the price you pay is with scrolling. It's jerky compared to stock, especially when you are slow scrolling. Fast scrolling is not an issue.
Yeah, I don't know what you talking about. I'm running Jedi X6.1.2 and I don't feel a performance difference, but I do have a lot of nice goodies stock doesn't have.
OP should make a video to show people his problem
I experience none of that with jedi or cleanrom

I know what he means. I also started a thread about jerky scrolling. Some people seem to have decent eyes they just dont realize or never seen a fluid scrolling capable samsung rom. My stock browser is buttery smooth even with heavy picture loaded wep pages. However tapatalk and facebook and some apps are super jerky. Even setting menu of phone is very jerky. Unbelievable. They are jerky when u scroll only with medium speed. If you scroll very slow or very fast its smooth.
This is very annoying for me. So I flashed every available rom and kernel and tried every rom/kernel combo. I think I found the solution.
Seems like The problem is caused by cpu governer + rom type. So I tried some stock roms that are very smooth and that are jerky.
I got the best scrolling with note2core kernel and ONLY IF you select iNTERACTIVE governer. Perseus and other kernels only have pegasusq governer. Once I made it interactive they all became super smooth.
If you are running perseus kernel or such u can also test this by selecting "performance" governer. It basically keeps your cpu in highest level. And your scrolling becomes buttery smooth.
It has something to do with cpu levels I guess. With pegasusq there is not much load to trigger higher cpu levels so it uses low levels.
I suggest you to try note2core with interactive governer.

the lag should be enough, i did it on my galaxy s3 i had one that seemed to have alot of micro lag......if they can see it they should replace it. Most likely they will ask you to show them the problem, tell them you have a friend with the note 2 and you dont see any of this on his phone and think that it must be a bad unit. they should just replace it if its within the alotted time. just keep complaining you didnt pay that much money for a device to be as laggy as a last years gen phone and so on blah blah blah.....they should give you a new one.

So no effect on battery life?
This won't have much affect on almost anything we use due to almost all apps, if not all, already utilize the GPU for rendering so it really won't help us.

If you have the ability depending on your ROM, just disable HW overlays so you utilize the GPU better by only using it for screen compositing.

Thanks in fact i'm using perseus kernel, but i think it depend on which apps i'm using. On some apps i have no lag.
I also use pheonix rom, but if i want to eliminate these lags, i'll loose some battery life.
I think i'll buy zerolemon battery and put higher settings on the kernel. But i really need the settings for color on perseus kernel and i don't know if any other kernel use it?
If you're on Stock Rom then there'll be lag, in xda, in Tapatalk, when scrolling in my files and almost everywhere else. But since I moved to Android Revolution HD, almost 50% of those lag things are gone. Now when I scroll through Tapatalk, or in Twitter, it's just smooth as hell. Well not iOS or WP smooth, but for Android it's more than enough. Honestly I've never believed or seen a droid phone could perform this fluidly.
I sounded like a custom Rom fan, but let me tell you, I actually hate them, and always preferred stock ROMs, but this ARHD is something.

Lol. That is due to Mali's slower fill rate. And once you scroll through all of it, it doesn't do it anymore. Same in the browsers. You're less likely to see that on a power vr or adreno platform.
