hello guys
i need suggestions about buying a new phone. i recently had the galaxy note 3 and it was AMAZING!! the only downside was the display, i sold the note 3 fearing i would get a burn-in as all amoled screens have this issue, i decided that i will never buy any phone with amoled screen any time soon. the options available for me at the moment are the htc m8, lg g2 and g3, the problem with the m8 is that it lack some features that i think they are necessary such as camera and multitasking features. now we only have 2 options; the g2 and g3, the g2 lacks the micro sd and removable battery and has a cheap-looking backdoor while its has better battery life and better screen in my opinion, the g3 has a deal breaker problem, the heating, i saw alot of videos on youtube where the phone shuts itself when it becomes hotter, also the battery hungry screen leaves you poor battery life.
so what do you think guys? did lg solve the heating problem? also i want a phone that last a lot of time as i'm sick of changing my phone every year and that phone could the one i'm going to buy soon or the htc m9 when it comes out. every suggestion is welcomed and appreciated.

Since you already listed all the upsides and downsides of the G2 and the G3, what do you want us to tell you?
My G3 gets really really warm while in use, even at a low brightness, but I never turned of because of that.
I own a G3 and afterwards I think the G2 would have been the better choice because of the battery life, but I own 3 batteries for the G3, so this is okay, too.
If you want a device that lasts a while, I'd go for the G3 because it has a replacable battery.
And wouldn't the OnePlus One be an option? Tomorrow you'll be able to buy it without needing an invite.
i actually forgot about the oneplus one, but it's a big phone and i really got tired of big phones, i think i will buy the lg g2 for now as it has the most comfortable size and maybe i will buy a gold back door for it in the future.
Hello XDA community. I want to make the switch to the Verizon LG G4 and I'm exploring the features. I have gotten use to this Verizon S4 and want to know a bit more. One example is... I use the video settings on my S4 to limit for mms, does the LG G4 support this? I use it alot. Any others made the switch from the S4 that are having feature withdrawls? I just want to have a phone that has most of the same features and I don't want the S6. I need that expandable storage and battery. Thanks for having me here, I love this site and have used it for every phone I've had. Keep up the good work!
Hey so I didn't have the Galaxy S4 but I did just make the jump up from the Verizon version of the Galaxy S3. So far I'm happy with my new purchase!
Pros:
Camera and the screen - both awesome. Top Notch.
Fits in the front pocket of my favorite jeans! This could have been a deal-breaker.
I really like the curvature of the phone, makes it easier to hold and fit in your pocket.
I feel like I'm getting a better Verizon signal, haven't tested nor measured yet though.
Cons:
Battery life isn't bad but could be better. At least I can swap out replacements!
No root yet ...
I really miss installing custom ROMS, especially CM12.1 since it was getting so good.
Have you looked at the settings in video? I want to know if you can limit for mms messaging
I came from a Galaxy S3.
There were some things I'd taken for granted on my S3, which were not found on my G4.
- On my S3, I could turn the volume down to just Vibrate. And one more click would then turn off Vibrate, keeping it completely silent. On the G4, the volume control only turns it down to Vibrate, but no further. The S3 also showed a notification-bar icon for vibrate-only, and for fully-muted. The G4 does not show icons like that, so a few times I forgot to turn the volume up, and left it on vibrate-only in the morning.
- It may be a Lollipop thing, but the battery graph no longer shows bars for whether WiFi, GPS, or the screen were on, as well as whether the phone was Awake. A friend's S6 shows the same behavior, so again, it may not be an LG vs Galaxy change.
- The S3 camera let me set resolution, and metering styles (like Spot, vs Center-Weighted). And you can limit the video length, as you mentioned. The G4 camera app is fixed at full-resolution, and does not let you set a metering mode, even in Manual mode, as far as I can tell. You cannot set size limits for videos. I think the lowest video resolution is 720.
I returned my G4 within my 14-day return period, due to issues with it running warm, and short battery life. I should have exchanged it earlier, as a number of people with those issues have reported that replacements were better for them. I may give it a few weeks and buy one again. I'm in a similar situation to you, except coming from an S3, and I want something with SD and removable battery. My next choice is the S5, but there's a lot to like about the G4, I'm hoping the teething issues are sorted out quickly.
I'm currently using my Galaxy S4 and just bought the G4 a week ago. I'll probably keep using my S4 until the G4 has root. I can't find any option to limit the video size for mms. The only options are UHD, FHD, HD and slo-mo. There are NO modes for things like HDR, Twilight, Fireworks, etc. for the camera either. Your only options are Auto, Panorama and dual. There is an option to turn HDR on or off, but it's for all pics.
I love the manual camera options, and I like the screen much more than my S4's screen but there's not much else that is better (or as good as) my S4. If we get root, I should be able to tweak things to my liking & the G4 should be as impressive as my S4. I'm used to having full control & flashing ROMs.

I come from a S4, and it really worth it. You have better camera, screen, etc. Everything is better (except battery life, which is a bit bad right now). I have the phone since a week ago and I'm quite happy with it. I don't miss my S4 at all (except for root and things like that, but it's question of time)
I cant' answer to the mms question because I have never use it, but I don't think you can do that with the G4. But maybe there's an app for that?
Thank you for your help. I'm going into the store and playing with this thing before I make a decision. I guess a hands on experience will either make it or break it. I wish the S6 had a removable battery and SD card slot, or... offer up that 64GB version at verizon. I run into space problems as it is with my S4. I can't imagine not having an expansion option. Also, is it true that Verizon limited the expansion to 200GB on the G4 instead of the 2TB that LG gave it? Why oh why must these companies mess with a good thing? Sigh...

Sorry I don't have any numbers just to share, just my anecdotal experiences.. in that regard Id say the G4 battery life is similar to that of my Galaxy S3. That isn't bad but it's just not nearly as good as the reported battery life from some of the newer flagship devices. Either way I gotta say that when people post that they get 5+ hours of screen-on time that it's hard to believe.

I would agree with this summary.
I returned my G4, and have gone back to my S3 for now. The battery issues with the G4 got me paying more attention to the run-time on my S3.
It looks like I've had GSam installed since right after I got my S3 in December 2012. According to GSam, if I'm reading the page correctly, under "Averages Per Complete Charge", it says my Screen On Max is 2:15. Maybe meaning that I've never exceeded 2:15 of SOT? That doesn't seem very impressive at all, but I'd believe that number.
My signal at work varies. In some areas of the building I have no signal at all. So depending on where I'm spending time during the day, my battery can see a bigger drain. But nowadays, if I'm using the screen much at all, I typically try to put my S3 on the charger during the day, to avoid the battery sometimes getting low towards the end of the day. While I had my G4, I was finding similar behavior, I'd need to put it on the charger again at work. Mine was running warm, which probably didn't help.
The S3 is using a 2.5 year old battery, though, and the G4's battery is almost 50% bigger (3000 vs 2100). So seeing similar run-time was not impressive to me, on my particular G4.
Im getting my g4 tomorrow, what you guys reallly think of it?
Is it a keeper or can i do better? I have nexus 6 love it but so like the look of the g4

If the size of the nexus 6 doesn't bother you I would stick with that. The g4 camera is amazing. But otherwise the nexus 6 is faster in every way. Battery lasts longer. Charges a lot faster. And of course root and unlocked boot loader. At this point I'm kind of regretting the g4. Other than the amazing camera, which really is great. I just couldn't handle the nexus 6 size. Hell my nexus 5 is faster than the g4. I'm actually using it more because of root. I miss too much of that stuff I guess.
I had the Nexus 6 and it's going back. The only thing I'll miss about the N6 is the larger screen and front facing speakers.
Battery life is much better on my G4, without a doubt. I can get about double the life out of my G4 than my nexus 6. I even hacked my N6 and installed custom kernels, amplify, app ops, greenify, bah! Battery life is terrible on the N6. The G4 charges quickly if you don't use it. If you have the screen it, it charges more slowly. I think they worry about the heat. I noticed that the G4 doesn't heat up NEARLY as much as the Nexus 6 on its fast charger (the nexus 6's I mean). The Nexus 6 got SO HOT... It was a nightmare.
The Nexus 6 screen is also a lot dimmer, and it heats up in a matter of 1 minute of use. It made it VERY uncomfortable to use, and when I'd drop it back into my pocket, my leg would get warm because of it. The G4 stays cool always, and it only gets a little warm on the fast charger, and not really at all on a normal charger. LG did a very good thing here!
Speed? The N6 is faster, and always will be, but not by a lot. I don't notice any lag, But then again I always use Nova and Touchpal keyboard.
Camera? Quality is very nice on both. I'm quite surprised. With HDR+ the Nexus 6 is very good, but focusing time is VERY VERY slow, and more of than not the subject moves. Very good quality pictures though. But the G4 has a great camera with a lot of control and it's super fast to take pictures. Just yesterday I went to a photography class and since the G4 has manual controls I used it as well as a DSLR camera that they lent us... The pictures came out outstanding!
I'd say both are good phones, but ... I like the G4 more. But I miss the screen size and the front facing speakers. I thought updates were the most important thing, but really, if the device just works, what else do you really need? The G4 just works for me right out of the box, with no fidgeting or hacking required - which I think is how a phone for a normal user should be. The N6 is awesome though for hacking! SO EASY TO ROOT AND INSTALL ROMS AND KERNELS! I couldn't believe how easy it was xD

Will keep looking, wanted the g3 as it got really good marks so thought the g4 would be better. Dont want to go back to samsung or sony (both good phones just not my style) would of gone with the new htc if it was worth it. Love the nexus 6 loads.

I actually won my G4 somewhere, I would never buy it. I thought I was gonna sell it, new, with plastic protectors still on, but after playing with it for a while and after seeing I can unlock and root it(815), I decided to keep it. Now I've learned to love it. Well, at least until the next Nexus series comes out.
There're two things that drive me crazy with the G4. One is the touch problem (mostly with the KnockCode) and the other one is the lag in web browsers (scrolling pages). Non of these issues occurred with the G3.
I still believe that both of these issues can be fixed with software update, but I'm running out of patience.

Knock code depends on your proximity sensor, if it's covered, it won't work. Even if your fingers are to close, the sensor might still pick it up and it doesn't work.
EDIT: Oh my bad, I was talking about knock/tap to wake. Dunno bout the code though as I don't use it.
I broke one OPO yesterday beyond repair, its not worth sending it back for the amount they are going to charge me to fix it($223). Will I be happy switching to the G3 since it is a very similar phone or should I look towards something like the G4. I know the G4 is apparently riddled with problems(touch screen issues being the worst) so that scares me a bit.
My biggest concern with the G3 is not the hardware. I know the 801 is still a decent CPU and will hold up for a while, I am nervous about continued support and updates being that the phone is already over a year old.
Sorry if this has been asked a million times, the OPO was my work phone and i need to make this decision ASAP.

okay you get like 3-4h screen on against 8h on opo but the opo didnt hold a day at work with bluetooth on and 2h browsing it came dead home mostly or at 10%
but the lg g3 in 2h loses 5% with bluetooth and 3g the opo lost more like 10-15% with the same bluetooth and lg g watch
over all better quality phone and smaller for the same screen
okay its a bit more plastic and slippy, but a tpu case fixes that, the opo has a slow and bad touchscreen worked but needed to press it hard/harder than normal
voila i recommand the lg g3 to all
6months of having a opo was enough the phone wan't premium like i wanted
(exchanged it for a gold 16gb lg g3 about the same value) but a 32gb would be better to have the 3gb ram that the only thing i miss
From my experience (never owned a OPO), I like my LG G3 (not love..). You shouldn't be worried about updates (we will be getting M) and XDA is a great place for updates (AOSP). As for battery, you may or may not like it, it varies for everyone but for me, I can get through a day easily with moderate usage (no gaming, texting, browsing the web, youtube, etc.). If you choose to root, you can get more on AOSP but it varies.
Overall, I like my LG G3 and would recommend it to you as well.
One last thing, the G4 sounds great too but you shouldn't be too worried about touch screen issues on the G4 because I'm sure it's a rare issue and the chances of it happening to you sound so slim. Don't worry too much, its just a phone

The OPO did have a solid battery, but I had touch screen issues like you mentioned. They seemed to come and go. When it "exploded" it did have a TPU case and glass screen protector but that didnt save it.

I am not a power user, little to no gaming so I think I should be ok.
I am sure the G4 issues are not on every phone but there is a 50 page thread over there about the screen issues and a lot of pissed off people who have returned multiple phones and some who just gave up altogether and moved on. It seems to be a little more than the typical issues that all phones inevitably have.

I ended up pulling the trigger on a used g3 fulfilled by amazon. It is def a solid phone and was pretty cheap.

the battery will be a bit different
but after some weeks you will get used to it
the opo has lots of screen on time but not standby so at work i don't see much difference using it 2h aday opo or lg g3 about hte same at the end of the day cause of the bad standby
but on a lazy day at home the opo was great 6h straight on the phone gaming internet no problem, lg 2-4h but at the end it is all worth it
i always wanted a lg g3/g2 but was to expensive that why i bought the opo and since the price of the opo didnt go down after 6mopnths use i could exchange it for a lg g3 16gb who was 350 new and 250 2nd had but right now about the same value 300euro new
any way enjoy the lg g3
my opinion is: GO FOR IT!
The LG G3 still one of the best this days and worth the money (32GB/3GB are at 365€ in Portugal ~399$ dollars).
If you are worried because updates and other things, for more 50$ you get the Motorola Nexus 6 32GB and get updates faster, have the SD805 is a bit more faster tha SD801 and is the only thing who are better...but some users report battery issues, screen issues (burning, get pinkish screen) etc etc, depends of lucky not necessary will you have those problems! i own a G3 and i love it:
camera is amazing;
sound is louder but dont have the same quality as Nexus 6!
weight is excellent to handle
screen without sharpness mod is a bit strange because oversharpening;
love the rear buttons and i cant live without this now, is so useful;
OST is about 4 hours but sometimes i get more if i use the phone inside home, i lower the brightness and i get about 5:30 hours;
easy to disassemble if you broke/damage something (i disassembly my G3 to apply thermal compound in processor to have good temps, because my G3 have heat issues.);
have a remote IR, other high-end phones dont have it, is so useful to me because sometimes i forget my remote and use the phone as my remote;
battery can be changed and with this if you get your battery damaged or have one to replace when run out of power you can do it;
overall is a good phone, is my opinion, when i was go to buy a high-end phone i am confused with Motorola Nexus 6 and LG G3, but because the issues is more in Nexus 6 than in G3 i buy the G3 for sure...but, if you arent worred about issues of Nexus 6, buy the Nexus 6 because have better screen color, no oversharpening and have better sound quality because have stereo speakers and have the updates faster!
So I got the phone. It was nearly flawless with a few very minor scratches on the screen. In order to see them you had look at the phone off angle from the bottom right corner, during a full moon, while the planets aligned. In other words I am very happy from a condition standpoint. So far the phone has been great, the camera is way faster, typing seems to be WAY more acurate than my last few phones, and its got an IR blaster which is did not realize. Battery does seem to drain quicker but i am not a power user so i dont think it will be an issue getting through the day.
To me, having seen OPO but not used for long, just do it. OPO is a good phone - for the price tag. Since you can get a cheap factory refurbished G3 now, I see no reason not to move on. Battery is super good with some tweaks and custom roms. Moderate usage and still around 70-80% of battery before going to bed. If you are not showing off your new phone that not many care any more, get a year old phone like g3, s5, and m8...
Hey guys. I have an LG G5 currently and am getting the HTC 10 delivered tomorrow as the LG G5 GPS issue is driving me mad. What I'm wondering is, is the HTC 10 a better phone? Naturally most of you are going to be a bit bias due to owning the 10, but try and be as unbiased a possible. As I said my main issue with the G5 is that my gps is very hit and miss (miss 70% of the time) although at first it worked flawlessly for a couple of months.
I'm liking the sounds of the built in DAC and I love the build quality of the HTC 10 too. I hear the camera has been improved since launch thanks to software update? I've also heard about a pink tint to the screen, is this with all HTC 10 handsets or just the odd one?
I haven't owned a HTC since I had the M7 on release and I usually keep a phone from anywhere between 2 months to 6 months so it was easily a few years back I think? but I need a keeper for 2 full years this time around. The G5 I've had for maybe 3 months and was supposed to be my 2 year keeper lol.
Also how easy is rooting and flashing on the HTC 10? The reason I switched from the M7 was because for some reason after flashing some kernels and ROMs for months my signal had broke and WiFi had broke too with both dropping in and out every 30 seconds. I did eventually fix this but that was a couple months after getting a new phone and then I sold the M7

I've just moved to the HTC 10 from the LG G5, a few days actually, and I find myself missing the G5.
The speaker on the G5 is the biggest thing I miss, it really blows the H10 away. I will be using a BT speaker for gaming and chilling when i'm away from headphones though now I've got the H10. (EDIT: this one might be up for discussion or you can judge for yourself when you get your 10, maybe even advise me if my 10 is faulty, as my 10 speaker is 50% quieter than the LG and has no bass)
The wide angle lens is the other, and the G5 camera's in general. The manual mode on the 10 is awful and in my opinion useless, but Auto produces decent shots. I will be picking up one of the lenses with Macro, Wide and Fish eye lenses from ebay see if I can get around that. The G5 is slightly smoother and quicker and I miss the G5 keyboard lol.
Aside from that the HTC 10 is a great phone, it's almost as fast as the G5 although it gets a tad hot, music through headphones is insanely loud and great quality, GPS I haven't tried yet.
Oddly enough the GPS, wifi and 4G performance on the LG G5 was the best of any phone I've used, so I don't understand the GPS issues people used to get.
Given a chance, and now after rooting and installing Viper again, I think i'll get over my missing the G5 but for now, I think the G5 is a better phone. (I am contemplating buying another to use as my work phone)
As you're getting the 10 delivered, you will work all this out anyway and probably be more than happy with the 10.

Do you think it's possible my speakers are faulty? I only ask because they're about 50% as loud as my old G5 and aside from clarity they have zero bass. I'm wondering if I should replace within 14 days? (Sorry for sidetracking the thread)

idk hard to tell. I mean the g5 had a really loud speaker on the bottom. But having dual speakers on the 10 was my favorite.

Well if possible I want to leave the delivery sealed and send the HTC 10 back if people think the G5 is a better phone. Like I said my only issue with the G5 is its poor GPS (constantly searching) so I can't navigate! Which I do quite a lot Lol. I also only get around 3-4hrs screen on time. I've seen people on the HTC 10 getting 7-8hrs SoT

unless you want the wide angle camera the HTC 10 is better in every way imo. LG also has bad quality control lately with the G4 bootlooping, the V10 bootlooping and some issues on the G5. DEF go the HTC 10 over G5. Also the HTC 10 is likely to be the first phone to upgrade to nougat that isnt a nexus device. Since you know there making the pixels
Can not say I ever had a G5 but did have the G2 and G4, both garbage, neither lasted a year without major issue.

I currently have both phones but I prefer the HTC 10. The Bui!d quality is better on the HTC, the G5 seems to scratch a lot easier. I have a couple little scratches on it even though I really take care of my phones. The HTC looks brand new. I like the dual speakers (sorta dual I guess) as they sound better when watching movies. The G5 definitely gets louder tho. The sound from the headphone jack is also better on the 10, but if you have the hifi DAC for the G5 they sound pretty much the same (awesome that is). The wide angle camera (really just the camera function in general) on the G5 is probably the one thing it has over the HTC.
Everything else between these to phones comes down to preference. The HTC is closer to stock Android, but LG's layering on top of the OS introduces some neat functionality. Speed, screen, processing, storage are all pretty similar. HTC does adoptive storage out if the gate though.
Rooting I believe us also better someone the HTC u less you have the LG H850.
My nod goes to the 10 if i had to choose one.
I'm keeping the HTC 10 and selling the LG g5. I really love the feel Of The HTC 10 and it's a really nice experience overall. 2nd day of use and I'm getting 5hrs SoT which is about an hour or slightly more than my G5. I will probably miss the G5 camera but I'm sure I'll get over it eventually lol.

I came from the LG G5 to the HTC 10, completely worth it imo.
I miss the G5's camera and fingerprint placement, but nothing else really.

After installing a custom ROM to remove some of the annoying issues, and V4a to improve the sound quality and speaker bass and volume, and taking some brilliant shots and video footage of a gig last night, I have changed my mind, Rooted and properly modded, the 10 is better than the G5 lol.
Stock, the G5 still has it for me and is a better out of the box experience than the 10. But Rooted and modded the 10 comes out of it's shell and really shines.

TLR go for G5 for swappable batteries.
I'm writing this on a HTC m8. I've had a great ride with this phone but really been bummed out with the non removable battery. 18 months into ownership the m8 battery started behaving weird. It drained a lot faster. Now 2+ years later it is very frustrating battey wise, when the phone gets to 30-20% it shuts down without warning. Obviously my non removable battery has reached "end of life".
I know phones with non removable batteries can be replaced but HTC one series phones have a notorious record of being one of the hardest phones to replace battery wise...not only that some have reported that other components sometimes get damaged in the attempt to replace the battery.
Don't get me wrong I love HTC, the build quality is great and I've never really had a problem with lag or any thing like that. But I wish HTC would release a phone with a removable battery then it would be perfect... Unlike others I'm not obsessed with how thin a phone should look.
I know this is about the HTC 10 vs G5 (and not HTC m8) but i would say you need to factor in how long you will have the phone for....if you're like me and like to keep a phone for 18+ months then maybe G5 is the way to go.
I'm actually waiting for the LG V20 to be released as I'll never go back to the frustration of non removable batteries no matter how good the phone is.
I'm pretty sure that in another year this HTC 10 forum will be awash with battery issue posts just like the HTC One M8 is now.

HTC 10 all the way. Only other phone was the M8 I really enjoyed over every phone I ever had which was damn near every manufacturer lol

I'll echo your concerns. I tried to change my M8's battery myself. Ruined something and had to send it in for repairs. It was fixed quite cheaply and got a fresh battery installed by a professional.
Though a removable battery feels like a good option to have, let's face it, you'll only need it about once or twice in the phone's lifetime, and for those times, you can pay a little and get a professional to do it.
Of course, if you like to have spare batteries and switch them out on demand, then that's a different story.
