[Q] Issue with mobile data and NFC - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This issue started a couple of days ago. This has been two weeks since the last OTA. I don't recall changing any settings, the only thing I have tried recently is to use the phone as a hotspot. It did work, but then I turned it off as my carrier doesn't support the use of hotpots on phones.
When wi-fi is off or when I am out of range, the phone will start to battery drain, get really hot, and the 4G icon flashes. It will stay on for a few seconds, then disappear. It does this non stop. It will kill the phone in 2-3 hours. The carrier in the notification menu will also switch from my carrier to "emergency calls only" as the 4G icon is flashing on and off. I can't really access websites, sometimes they will load, but mostly I get the no internet connection error. If NFC is turned on, the NFC icon also flashes on and off. I'm not sure if my NFC works on the phone, I can't get it to send pictures to other devices, or use google wallet. That may be a separate issue, or they may be a hardware issue.
Within range of wifi I don't have these issues. The 4G icon stays on, and the NFC icon stays on, but the NFC still doesn't seem to work. Has anyone else experienced these issues? I have cleared the cache in the recovery, but it didn't help. I'd rather not wipe my phone and lose how it is set up. I'm hoping there is a settings fix before I try that. I may have to send it to Asus for repair.

Haven't seen this issue however one setting you can check is under Settings/WiFi/Advance (menu in upper right corner)/Scanning always available/Turn Off - This can help improve battery life.
Please ensure to update firmware to latest version. Please also see ZenUI app called ASUS support for some helpful tips and troubleshooting assistance under Apps/ASUS Support/Assistance/System /Device Overheat - follow troubleshooting methods. Factory data reset or hardware rest may be required if problem continues. Please feel free to contact me direct if this requires ASUS RMA service.
Sincerely,

Data Delay

For a while now, I have noticed this issue with my Evo. All applications have a delay in establishing a data connection. E.g. When I use an app that needs to use the internet, my 3G doesn't light up until about 45s-1.5min after I submit the request (when I first bought the Evo, this problem did not exist; I do not know when it first began). What usually helps is if I load the browser during the request. This usually turns on my 3G icon. Has anyone else had this issue? It is highly frustrating as it can take several minutes to complete just a simple google search.
Some background info that may be helpful.
1) I have the "enable always-on mobile data" checked.
2) I've noticed that I'm constantly switching between 1x and Evdo Rev. 0
3) I've noticed this before root and after.
4) In the process of trying to fix this issue, I unrooted my phone, brought it to Sprint, and they could not fix it, nor did they recognize it as an issue.
If I didn't make sense or I need to clarify please let me know. I really appreciate all the help!!

[Q] Grey signal and WiFi bars?

Hi all,
I was just wondering why sometimes my signal and WiFi bars turn grey and often can't make/send calls/data. I thought no signal or WiFi was indicated differently, especially since I can get full grey bars I doubt it's a signal problem.
I've attached a screenshot to show what I mean

it means that you are not logged into google services.
and since most of the apps run with google services (stock browser as well), if you are not logged in, they will not response and keep trying.
if somehow u have other browser like dolphin, or firefox, it should still work.

Thanks. Is there anyway you can force it to reconnect? It seems to be happening more and more lately
There isn't a lot you can do if the phone is stock. You can pull the battery often to see if that helps, check your' network settings and make sure that it is all set correctly. Finally master reset and re-log into your' gmail account.
Other option is to unlock the bootloader and root the device:
If you go the unlock/root route I would recommend flashing a custom radio.img file such http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374077
If you need instructions on how to go the root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352413
In an emergency to un-root the device:

Hope this helps.

I'm already rooted and running the XXIK6 radio. I'll try logging out and back in to see if that helps. Thanks
This happened to me the other day, was so annoying!
Although the blue bars do show whether it's connected to Google services etc, there must be more to it as I couldn't make any calls or anything like that. I went in and out of airplane mode, restarted the phone etc but nothing helped, so I just assumed it was something to do with my network and left it for a while and it sorted itself out in the end.
I have the stock phone. I forced it to see the network by going to Settings, Wireless & Networks, More, Mobile Networks, Network operators. This will force a scan to see what networks are available. Pick AT&T (assuming that who your provider), and it should turn on the Cell Service.
If it does not work, try going to an AT&T owned store and ask for a new Sim Card. (That is what I had to do.) They put it in with no questions, except for marveling at my wonderful SGN. No plan or feature changes happened.
For the Wifi, that is different. Go to Settings, Wireless & Networks, Wifi (and turn it on). You can re-scan for networks anytime. I had 11 networks in range, so it took some looking to find mine. You may need to re-enter the security settings several times to get it right. (Delete old settings by using "forget" below the network you select.) Once it works, it should keep on working with no further adjustments, at least mine does that.
When signals are seen, the grey icons will show blue as a signal strength. (I'm not sure they are accurate.)
Good luck.
All extremely overkill methods...
I used to get this sometimes on all of my Android devices. Simple way to sort it out and sign back in? Your data/wifi is still active - just open Google Talk, go to the list of contacts on it (not in a message, as in you've just signed in) and it'll connect and sync itself straight away... 10 second job, no need to pull out a battery, flash random things, or anything else.
^ this. I just was going to write the exact same thing. Just open up gtalk and you are golden.

Here! Here!
I was pretty shocked to see the suggested methods previous to Gtalk...
If anyone else knows a better way, please share!
Best method is to sort through the code and fix the problem, unless you are all on at&t (which you're not) which would suggest a network issue. However, I have used nearly every android device available...even a few I'm not very proud of. I have never had this issue. My point is Google talk may work and be helpful, but its not a solution/fix.

It's happened to me a couple of times so clearly not just AT & T nor even just the USA. I waited it out, next time I'll try the Google talk method (not sure if it'll work, Google Voice not currently available in Aus.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm on O2 in the UK, so it isn't just a States issue as Clancy is experiencing it in Australia too.
I've narrowed it down today though. I've noticed that I only get grey bars when connected to WiFi, and sometimes even then I can't make/receive calls. Pretty much as soon as I disconnect the WiFi and get connected to the mobile network I get reconnected to Google's servers and the bars turn blue again. Weird.

[Q] Nexus won't see GPS satellites

I've had the nexus toro (LTE) for 5 days now and have had issues with the GPS since the start. It simply says 'searching' all the time and will not lock. I've installed GPS status, and it shows that it rarely if every sees a satellite (one might pop up, be gray for a second, then disappear).
Here's a pic comparing my OG droid to the nexus right next to each other:
imgur.com/VFc3s
(sorry i'm not allowed to post links yet)
Anyone have any ideas? I've turned GPS on/off, reset the gps cache using GPS Status, and can't think of anything else.
I have the same problem gps locks less than 50% of the time.
Galaxy nexus s LTE.
Its the same on the GSM version. Not much you can do about it unfortunately.

I feel like a dolt because I chatted with Samsung support and they had me soft-restart which fixed the issue.

Don't; that is not a solution. On my Samsung Fascinate soft restarts would help get a lock on, but shortly after the GPS would lose connection to satellites.
Having to restart your phone every time you need to use GPS is a ridiculous inconvenience. This seems to be a major flaw in the chips / radios that Samsung chooses for GPS.
i get gps locks in 2-3 seconds.works fine.
I'm glad to see others are noticing this problem. I posted a thread in another forum complaining about this:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ga...ssions/189067-problem-nexus-locating-gps.html
Does anyone know if this is definitely a hardware issue? Is it possible that it's a bug in Google Maps that's causing the problem with ICS?
It doesn't have to be Google Maps it self. I have it in other apps as well which use the GPS.
Might be hardware, might not.
One of the main reasons I upgraded from the Galaxy S (fassy) was that it's GPS chip went from working not very well to not working at all. If I'm paying for a smart phone, I would like a to have GPS and maps.
So far I have not been disappointed with the GNex's GPS at all. Maybe I lucked out. Try downloading GPSfix from the market and see if that helps.
I have the exact same problem here in Sweden, went for a run and it would not lock on to any satellites at all during half an hour. Really disappointing, thinking of returning it due to this...
Has anybody found a solution to the problem maybe???
was having same problem
Hello fellow GNex users having the GPS issue.
I was having a GPS problem as well where when using Google Maps or Navigation, the GPS status would say 'searching for GPS' forever.. maybe after 10 minutes it would get a lock and operate normally after that.
I downloaded an app from the android market called GPS Test to try to get some better idea of what could be going on.
When I ran the app, I noticed my phone would pick up a few satellites (satellites in view) usually 4 or 5 satellites, but it would never use them, they would just appear as in view without being used for a location, and the GPS test app was never able to report my location. From within the GPS app settings I was able to clear aGPS and update aGPS, but the same behavior would reoccur where the satellites would be in view but would not be used for location.
I tried toggling Wi-Fi, clearing out other location methods, and even going into airplane mode to use GPS only, but same behavior.
What I finally did was clear aGPS once more and then immediately power off the phone, pull the battery, wait a couple minutes and then replace battery and power back on.
Upon going back into GPS test, I did an update aGPS, and then I started to immediately pick up satellites and use them for location. Toggling all the same data connectivity settings (Wi-Fi, location using towers, airplane mode etc) I was continuing to get the same positive response.
I have tried to use google maps and google navigation again and am getting near immediate GPS locks. Comparing this to my Nexus One, the lock is much faster and with about the same accuracy.
This seemed to solve my problem for now, I hope it might help anyone else.
Phone information:
Verizon Galaxy Nexus
Stock Android ICS 4.0.2 Build ICL53F
subsonicbug got it right...
I had the same problem of never syncing GPS, I follow the suggested method and voilĂ  2 secs GPS sync...
You save my day
Thank you
My gnex was having similar issues, after reboot it would lock quickly, but after a while it would take forever and never lock
Been using this to reset / download agps and it helps a ton!
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
subsonicbug's method was the only thing that got my GPS back to usability after several very frustrating days during which my GNex could barely see two or three satellites (and not get a fix on any of them) even under an open cloudless sky.
He or she is clearly on to something...now let's hope that we (and by "we" I mean people way more knowledgeable than me) can figure out why a significant number of Galaxy Nexus devices get so far out of whack that only a soft GPS state reset followed by a battery pull can get GPS working again.
there's actually an easier way that doesn't involve a battery pull. download the app "gps status & toolbox", press menu, tools, "manage a-gps state", reset, after a soft reboot go back into the app, follow the same process but instead of pressing "reset" press "download" after the download you should be good to go. hope this helps!
FasterFix works for me, make sure you have busybox installed.
The unit I'm currently using says location unavailable after resets, pulls, wipes. Hardware problem? I do get intermittent flashes of use.
Here is a fix that may work. I had the same problem and this worked for me, got a gps lock with gmaps in less than a minute. I have the VZW GNex, rooted bootloader unlocked, works with any rom.
Conditions needed:
1. Phone needs to be rooted, I believe, if you have success with out root please share.
2.file explorer, I use root explorer
Now follow these steps:
1. Open root explorer, or any other file explorer
2. Navigate to /etc
3. Ensure the system is mounted r/w, if using root explorer press mount r/w
4. Open gps.conf with text editor
5. The first line will say NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org. Where it says north-america it could list a different continent depending on your location.
6. Edit this line by removing the north-america
7. It should now read NTP_SERVER=pool.ntp.org
8. Save the file and exit
Now open open any app requiring GPS and you should get an instant lock, or pretty close to instant.
hmm my issues seems sorta wiered too -.-

tracks seem always loosing lock and so does navigation and other tools

[Q] HELP! My Mobile Data Will Not Stay On After Opening Service Mode!

So last night, I was reading through some posts here and elsewhere about the MTP software not properly loading onto PC's and I was having the same issue. One thread said to go into Service Mode by dialing *#7284# and changing the USB options. Well, as soon as I went into Service Mode, I lost my 4GLTE signal. It would pop up as if connected and then immediately disappear. I restarted the phone several times, removed both the SIM and the SD card, and was still having the issue. I called myself from my landline and the call went through, I was able to answer it, but the icon still kept disappearing. I can also still send texts. I tried going into apps and using them with wifi off and they won't stay connected to the internet when the icon disappears.
So I chalked it up and decided to factory reset today because I've had the phone for almost 2 years now and I figured it would help with some other issues I was having. Well, after I reset it, it is still giving me the same issue, although it seems to stay connected a little longer now before cutting out. On wifi, everything works fine, but once I shut it off, I lose my connectivity. I didn't touch any other settings in Service Mode and it was as soon as it went into Service Mode that I saw the icon disappear. Then I thought it may be a SIM issue, but I don't have another mini-sim to try or a phone that I can try my SIM in. I'm running Simple Mobile on my phone currently. It isn't rooted. Now I'm mortified that I won't be able to do anything with my phone unless it's on wifi... *sigh*
Has anyone else had a similar issue??? Did you find a way to fix it? Any other suggestions that I may try? I don't want to deal with trying to root right now because If I brick it completely I'm going to scream...
Help?
P.S. - I apologize if this is posted elsewhere on here, but I wasn't able to find a similar issue when i searched. If you have a link to another post here, then please drop it on me... also, I'm fairly tech savvy. I just have no idea why this would happen without me actually making any changes.
Possible radio issue?

After doing some digging, I'm thinking there's an issue with my radio? Is there a way to easily flash the radio? I'm thinking that may fix whatever is keeping it from staying connected. I have noticed that in the last few hours it has been staying on longer, and when I connected it to my laptop, it stayed on for the most-part while connected. This is a weird issue, I am really wondering if anyone has had it. I will keep updating and if I find a solution it will be here, just in case this happens to anyone else. I'm hoping one of you helps me though. :victory:
Either way, i have uninstalled (and now reinstalled Kies and the USB drivers). Going to install ADB and Odin as well and keep reading up... back to work I go!
**FIXED**
I have no idea how, but the issue has fixed itself. I had my provider (Simple Mobile) cycle my SIM card and that seems to have fixed the problem. I will never know what actually happened I guess... but should this happen to you, I would suggest having your provider do the same thing.

General connectivity issues

Hey folks!
I just picked up the BS3 after being generally disappointed for most of a year with the Razer Phone 2. I got the EU version (I guess?) and have been having general issues with the wireless.
Periodically, almost the entire suite of wireless connectivity just drops. My WearOS watch (Ticwatch Pro 2020) will disconnect, and the custom watchface I use via Watchfaces disappears. Wifi usually keeps working so I may not notice the drop right away, but if I'm on my phone's cellular connection, nothing goes through even though it shows signal and LTE. In my car on my way home from work this morning I was on the phone with my captain, and the bluetooth connection to my car started cutting in and out, to the point that I had to turn bluetooth off to finish the call. There was no issue up to that point, while driving and listening to Audible.
I am suspecting/hoping it was user error in setting the device up. I backed up my RP2 to Google Drive, because I didn't want to lose my apps/data (I was mostly hoping my Swype settings and game logins would transfer over, since Swype died and I'm being a luddite, and the games require the hassle of 'transfer IDs') and have my text messages transfer over easily. I think it also possibly transferred the core device stuff like cellular and bluetooth settings as well, though am not sure.
Turning airplane mode on and off seems to 'reset' things and it'll reconnect to stuff, for a while again at least. I noticed I am somehow still getting at least some push notifications on my watch even though it shows as disconnected. I am a firefighter, on AT&T's Firstnet, so am also not sure if maybe the Firstnet bands might be being finnicky with the BS3.
Thanks ahead of time for any help and suggestions!
ETA: I also get the "Xiaomi SIM activation failed" alert every time I restart the phone, and sometimes after reboot the keyboard doesn't load. ? I get the feeling ill need to reflash again, but knowing where I went wrong first would help! Also curious if there is a stock Android ROM because this JoyUI seems a hassle, and I just don't want all the Xiaomi stuff.
