[Q] Which ROM for minimizing lag and maximizing stability? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there -
I have an older HTC Desire HD phone that I'd like to repurpose to my son for him to use with games, etc. I know the hardware is now quite old and dated so I'm guessing it's even more important that I find the right ROM for it -- in terms of running smoothly and with minimal lag or hiccups. Can someone please offer a suggestion (or two) on what ROM (and maybe recovery) to use? In the "About Phone" section of Settings, it says that the Android version is 4.4.2 and the CyanogenMod version is 11-20140504-UNOFFICIAL-BR3-ace. I know I installed CyanogenMod on it a while back but am not sure if this is still the best thing to use or whether there's a newer/better ROM (either CyanogenMod or something else).
Thanks!

If u want it for that purpose I would suggest u flash ICS as that is the best OS for gaming...also no lag and responsive

What is the best, and most stable Android 4.0 ROM for Desire Z ?

Hi guys ... I want to try out Android 4.0 on my Desire Z, and was wondering which is the overally best Android 4.0 ROM out there currently available for Desire Z ..
There are quite a few available, but from what I can tell, all of them have some issues here and there, so I just wanted to know which would probably be the most reliable one ..
Andromaudus Audacity is by far, the best I've tried.
What about the Cyanogenmod one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492461
How does this compare to the one you've suggested ?
Also, regarding the ROM you've suggested:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349864
It appears that GPS and camera 'kinda' work ... Can you maybe elaborate on that ?
Also, how's the overall response on Andromadus Audacity Beta 3 ?
Well andromaudus is the best stock version of ICS as appose to Cyangenmod 9 beta 7's version. Andromaudus is far more responsive, which makes of for things 'kinda' working. You could even try andromaudus' test builds, which are also very good. If you can live with the large lag from Cyanogenmod 9, go with that.

i have been using CyanogenMod 9.0.0-RC0 BETA 6 + Apex launcher + SuperCharger V6 ..and i think its really amazing ..no lags.. no glitches in graphics and very stable .. (and to mention i have not tried Andromaudus )
my 2c
Using AOKP Brushed with little or no issue.

Well since I'm the OP here, I thought I should announce my winner
I've been using mexDroid Fried Icecream 3 FINAL for about 3 days now, and even after installing a TON of software in it, importing nearly 10,000 sms, and running all kinds of **** in the background (call recorders, GPS services, live wallpapers, etc) ... its still running *very* smoothly !
The only glitches I've seen so far:
--> Text became garbled ... happened once in 3 days, but this is not an issue specific with this ROM .. its present in all ICS ROMs from what I know ... the fix is easy: simply restart the phone ..
--> Sometimes when attaching a picture to a contact, the image doesn't show up completely ... easy fix is to just try 1-2 times if it happens (happened for like 1 contact in every 10) ..
I have not tried andromaudus though ..
Try This!
I found this ROM

the best of it is it has a camcorder

This ROM is also literally Andromadus. The latest version (which was taken down) was Andromadus B2 unzipped with 8 files added & rezipped.
I am using CM9 Beta8 and love it, albeit I have only been using it for 2 nights now, its really responsive and reliable. I am not quite sure where all the comments are coming from about CM9 being slow and laggy
I definitely believe CM9 is almost ready to be an official release.

[Q] hi! what kernel for overclocking desire bravo official 2.3.3

hi im a noob so go easy on me!
i have been a follower of your site for some time now
(had a self hacked xperia x10 awhile back with help from posts on this site, and now thanks to various peoples work and this site have a official 2.3.3 desire bravo s-offed cwm backup and rooted.)
but this is my first post.
my question is as above really. i would like to know what people think is the best kernel (or other way to overclock) and the links/guide for the official 2.3.3 gingerbread update.
im not looking for mental power just to eek it up a bit (near 1200mhz will do)
any help gratefully recieved :fingers-crossed:
big thanks for the developement work already done by this site!!
Just use set CPU from play store

hi, thanks for your reply,
set cpu doesnt allow you to see past the standard frequency available for the processor, im using a alpha kernel based on the stock one that now lets me see 1190mhz.
you see im trying to achieve the holy grail of getting gta 3 to run well on my desire.
it does and well, but vice city is proving a little sluggish
Where do u find them games for this device ? would love to try them there's not many at gameloft
Cheers
sent from my mildwild desire
Just search for gta3 apk or vice city apk, with vice city the instalation instructions are a bit vague so read through comments and you'll piece it together.
Youl need to use ram manager on hard gaming, overclock and 3d chainfire experiment with the settings and plugins on that. Also you can adjust graphics in game settings draw distance has the greatest effect on lag. Good luck!

And if anyone is stably running more?
Ill look Into leedroid, I presume I just install from zip from xrecovery.
I would like to know a few things about it as I've used custom Rom's before.
Is it easier on ram then?
Does everything work? (wifi, camera, radio, how etc)
Many thanks for your help

[Q] Why are Gingerbread ROMS the best for gaming?

HI, As a newcomer on this forum and also a xperia play owner one comments that continuously repeated over over through the forum us
~if you want good gaming performance go with gingerbread~
you can read that phrase in almost all threads, and my question is why?
ics and jb are supposed to be better because those are newer releases, leaving aside the fact that the touch pads on xperia play work better in gingerbread.
Many people like myself after reading that phrase many times think that Gingerbread is superior because of the FREE RAM that we have and also deprecated User Interface. But it could also be the fact that gingerbread doesn't have that many features.
I would like to know why.
greetings
I
Gb is lighter than the two and it's the only official software made for the phone. The others are ports made by devs and aren't perfectly made since we don't have enough resources for everything. For example the speakers are really quiet on ics and jb due to not having all the drivers or something.
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
Lets begin from the fact, that 4.x is more hungry to ram, so nearly 128mb leaved for ALL user apps.
Its hungry for CPU too, overclock cant help much.
Then, lastest Quallcom GPU drivers for 4.x are ****.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31451866&postcount=2
the more application advance in features the bigger they get.
usage of the gpu in core seems different (first fruits of what became project butter), android itself has a larger memory footprint, perhaps entropy plays a role.
with the right ics rom you can play nearly everything. you have to decide - playing need for speed most wanted all the time at blazing fast speed or u want the usefull features. real racing 3, all emulators you can think of, for example run like butter. it depends.
have tried dead space, into the dead, most wanted, real racing 3, loco roco, psx on retroarch, n64oid - just most wanted lags sometimes (depends on the stage). so this is no dealbreaker for me.

Yet another change in ICS, is that the graphics hardware acceleration is on by default for all apps from API level 14. For apps at lower API levels, it can be turned on in the manifest with the attribute Android:hardwareAccelerated="true". Hardware acceleration means that the GPU is used to render graphics, which enables a smooth user interface. However, it also results in at need to load additional graphic libraries for certain apps, which makes them use even more RAM.

have 218mb free on boot (ics neo-l debloated by myself)
It's kinda the same with Windows, ever tried to run Windows 7/8 on a machine that came with 95?
Well that pretty much says it all, but there are versions of ICS who leave up a lot of free ram and space.
After being the happiest man with true ancestor i may have to go back to try gin2jelly bean since it seems is the beest gingerbread rom, with a lot op work put in to it.

TBH I dont find JB to be that much superior. I have the atomic rom on my Play and looks wise (home screen, app drawer etc) its identical to my Xperia Z running 4.1.2, with a noticable exception of the screen on the Play looking much better!!
Only the settings menus etc are different, and anything else that JB brings to the table like swipe to remove I dont actually use!
Gin2JB goes one further still!!!!
ok, lets say if want to put a stock rom for my verizon wich is a ftf file. can i flash the stock rom using CWM (LUPUS ICS V12).
I HAVE INSTALLED GIN2JELLYBEAN and i was wondering if could flash the ftf stock rom using CWM.

ftf is the whole filesystem (with kernel and everything). use flashtool for this.

i'm sorry but this comparison fails in many ways. since the engine that's powering such a device is not the software. and why shouldn't a ferarri engine work besides from it's dimensions?
so ics needs a few more computing cycles to do the same. it's more about a lot of these custom roms out there. most are "overtweaked" and overblown. if you have tested the stock ics from neo-l you wouldn't notice a big difference. scrolling is responsive as it should be, app switcher opens instantly, 230mb ram free when debloated so games won't FC... and all that without any tweaks or init.d's at all.

[Q] Andromadus Slim Bean [build 6.2] - HTC Desire Z (Vision/G2) - end call

Hi There,
I'm actually using this ROM after so many tries with different ones and it is AWESOME but....
Always is something, I have strange behaviour with end call. When I finished call, sometimes dialer automatically tries to invoke Calendar app.
I've flashed this ROM, many times but I've always later or earlier have that behaviour. even after unnstalling calendar it still requests for it.
First time I have such thing in ROM. It's even on fresh install.
Second thing, anybody knows any fine Kernel for Slim Bean which is able to undervolt cpu?
Once I used AlterNdromedus 3.x JB but I think it wasn't stable
Yes it is a great rom.
What version Google apps / addon did you use?
The Calendar app has problems if the wrong version is loaded.
Here is the correct link. I used the all in one aroma installer. It makes things easy.

I use these settings
368 mhz min 1.2 max. IO scheduler noop, governor asswax works for me.
Others had wake problems when less than 368 mhz. I have found anything over 1.2 mhz has caused stability issues.
I hope any of this was helpful. I have been running Slim since it came out and have loved it.

I know about calendar issue but I had it problematic only with calendar sync, calendar itself was working fine.
My version is exactly the same as You linked - v6. Btw. there is v8, is it compatible with DZ?
So, better not messing with kernel in this ROM?
Thanks.
Version 8 is not compatible. blk_jack made a special version for our phones. I find his ROMS don't need extra tweaking. He picks the best for the phone. Any time I tried to add something I made worse. If ain't broke don't fix it.
I am using cache cleaner SDmaid Pro to keep things running smoothly. If I experience any lag I boot to recovery and wipe the caches including dalvic and let the ROM rebuild them. Another helpful tip I use is adding a second ext and use Link2SD to move large apps to the SDcard.
G2 using Slim Bean
Indeed, I had the same. Whenever I tried to mess with pimp my rom I finished with worse
results. So, only one thing left, is supercharger v6+ is needed on this rom?
Thanks a mil. for the answers.
I don't think you need it. If do try let me know your results.

As you mentioned earlier about setting lower freq. to 368MHz I thought it's not mine problem but I was wrong. Today when alarm rang on my Desire Z I couldn't woke it for snooze or turning it off. I needed 30 secs to get UI start reacting and finally to disable the alarm.
Beside I had one restart from google play. So, I decided to change to 368MHz and disabling ZRam.
Btw. did you enabled swap? I've used swap enabler script, hope it's compatible
I don't use swap, I tried it a long time ago. I did not see a noticeable effective to warrant the risk.
I do create a secondary ext on my SDcard and use Link2SD. I found this helps the phone a fair amount.
There is a good tutorial about swap and secondary ext. It was very helpful for me. Have you convert your phone to ext 4. ICS and Jelly bean works better.
Are you using ROM manager or 4ext for doing back ups. 4ext has a lot of good tools.

So, for last few weeks I disabled swap, too. Including earlier modifications (tuning up lowest freq. to 368MHz, disabling zram), now phone is quite smooth.
Somethimes I have lag, especially on android play but it's very acceptable
Thanks again for your help with DZ. Hope that you are happy with Note, it's huge phone
Thanks,
The Note 3 is a beast of a phone. I will not root it for awhile until I know the phone is stable and the ROMS mature.
My daughter will use the G2.
The G2 is a great phone for its day. Most phones from that era would not handled 4.2.2 ROMS like SlimBean.
When my G2 would slow down I would boot to recovery and clear caches and fix permissions. That would cleans things.
Daily I would SDmaid Pro or All in Tool Bow and reboot. That kept my G2 in good running condition.
Note 3
I've found another strange behaviour similar to main topic. I've active call and on the same time my alarm rang and again I wasn't able to snooze it or turn it off. I wonder is this due to general system overload or rom itself.
I'll need to give a try for other rom, for testing purposes.
