[Q] Nexus 7 2013 Internals to Kindle Fire HD6 body - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I install tablets into cars as a side project. I have customer who has a 2012 chevy cruze. It has a double din dash however the vents restrict how much you can trim out of the way. No he does not want to put it above the radio assembly. The Kindle Fire HD 6 is a perfect size but I know that no one has the root or a version of Timurs kernel for this. So the idea to remove the guts and transplant idea came around. Just need to know if scripting will be an issue because of the screens?

Ummm.... I guess turn on the Kindle to see what version it is lol......or are you talking about exterior appearence? If thats the case.....IDK

The kindle fire 2gen is slightly heavier as well, but if you turn it on, the UI differences are pretty obvious, for example the lack of gradient on the bottom home button bar.
The HD fire is much easier to tell apart, it has a front facing camera, and is also wider.
I hope that helps
I'm just trying to make sure I pickup a new one if I do go with a Kindle Fire. Due to its perfect location of usb and audio port for what I do, Its perfect size too. But I am disliking the no bluetooth thing. Since I like to play games with a ps3 controller. If I go back to a Galaxy Tab 1 I have to deal with audio not working through the HDMI Dock.

Nexus 7 as Head Unit help needed

Hello everyone. I am new to the site, and fairly new to car audio.
I was hoping I could get help figuring out what I need to buy so that I can setup my audio for my car,
I have a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX with infinity sound system( Minus the stock infinity amp, and oem radio/headunit)
I want to run all new wires to each of my speakers. I was thinking I need 14gauge wire.
I want to use a Nexus 7 Tablet as my head unit.
I would like to use a wireless charger for the tablet but I don't know if that's practical. If not then I will need a solution for charging the Nexus 7.
I want the tablet to be removable. I want to be able to tune into local radio stations.
So what I am not understanding is do I need to keep my current headunit and connect the nexus tablet to it via auxilary cord?
My headunit does not have bluetooth, and it was designed for use with an iPhone.
If I keep my current headunit how will I adjust the radio station from my nexus 7. I don't really want to be pulling the tablet out each time I need to change stations.
Then my other question is, do I need to keep that headunit to use a nexus 7?
I think that keeping the headunit paired with the nexus will probably be easiest because then I know I have a receiver for radio stations, and cds.
Also I need some help deciding what amp to get, what sub, and new set of tweeters.
I think I need a 4 or 5 channel amp
A 10 or 12" sub
I dont really know much about what brands to get, if I do or don't need crossovers.
Also some sound deadening. - which to get.
This was put in by local audio shop but they screwed me over. So I want to do it right this time myself. I am new to car audio, but I am familiar will basic electrical.
This is what is installed currently.
Deck (Pioneer DEH-6300UB)
Front Door speakers (RockFord Prime Full Range 6.5" 4ohm 3-way)
Rear Speakers (Rockford Prime 6x9" 4ohm 3-way)

best thing you can do is to split your project in to smaller parts. get them done in the order you think you can do it.
i recommend you get an N7, get the Behringer UCA 202, get a DAB stick and get SDR touch working. then figured out other parts as you have the time. it will be time consuming.
research what others have done.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I picked up google nexus 7 32gb 2013 version from bestbuy.
I will look at the other items on amazon in a little bit.
If you know a good thread that describes the process to help that would be great too!

This might help: http://youtu.be/K6OWTnoPZYA
I'd recommend getting a compatible amp and linking your nexus straight to it. Also, if you have a wifi hotspot, you don't need a radio, just use tune-in radio. it has all the local channels.
Thanks for the video! Anxiously waiting to see the rest.
I decided that the wireless charging is not going to be practical seeing as the tablet basically has to be touching the pad anyways. So hard lines will be fine.
Here is list of parts I think I am needing. Let me know if it looks good.
Nexus 7 32gb 2013 edition (Have)
Double Din Dash kit for my car ( I can't seem to find a kit that is made for my car? 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX) I have a single din dash kit maybe I can modify it to work...

I don't know suggestion please.

Some cheap but reliable: Suggestions

Anything special I should use or just some 14gauge?
Accept for what goes to amp which I will use 4gauge
I want to make this a removable install so I can attach it when I get in the car and take it out when I get out if I want to.
Also I decided that I will keep the current headunit I have because I do not have a dedicated hot spot for wifi and my cell phone plan only allows me 2gb per month. (AT&T)
So I will need to figure out how to push my current headunit further back.
Does anyone know if there is some app that will allow me to control my current headunit through auxilary or usb from the nexus 7? All I really want to be able to control is radio station, and volume.
Also I have a plan for making the tablet removable I just don't know what would be required. I want it to be a push in push out motion. You press it in to lock in and press again to release it.
So any suggestions for what to get would be helpful.
I was looking at another site and a guy made a box out of plexiglass. That would be good. Then figure out what i need to make the push release work.
Suggestions are needed and appreciated.
If I am missing anything let me know :good:

Tablet heating

Hello. I have a megane 3 sport tourer GT Line without gps and i was thinking put a android tablet look like original Renault gps system (see picture). Will you think tablet will overheat? That's the same place original renault is. And is any kind of protection/isolation we could use to protect tablet from sun? Many thanks
Yes.... will overheat, i also have a megane Sport Tourer and i've tried with a nexus 7 2013, if i let the car in the sun without the shade protection the tablet would shutdown. Android tablets are not designet to operate @-30 +110c
You better buy a unit with a separate display like this one http://www.roadnavi.com/product/m145-renault-megane-iii-fluence-media-satnav/ it will save you a lot of work and time!

That units problem is that are a old android and with very poor specs... But if you put a sunshade the tablet work good? I was thinking put some sun protection in the top but even so i think that tablet would heat also... So, you quit your tablet experience in car?

If you want to put the tablet in the dash you have to remove the battery.... more info here http://n7carputer.freeforums.net/thread/3/battery-mod?page=3
I can tell you that running the tablet one megane is not a very good idea, here is why:
1: the tablet is placed quite far from the driver
2: you don't have fm radio, only with the build in car radio but you don't see the stations anymorre because of the lack of the original display * fm usb rtl sticks are bad regarding the reception and only one app is ok for the control "wavesink" but has no media buttons for next/previous stations
3. you have to make serious modifications to make the wheel steering controls to work - play / stop / next etc
4. you can't use the car build in bluetooth for handsfree - no car display
5 the android software / kernel is hit and miss regarding otg + charging (for tablet wake up)... an so on
Ps I saw that you want to keep the orig. display but from my point of view looks ugly with two displays

Looking for Android head unit OS for carpc build

I have a 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T that i'm in the process of updating the interior on. I have built a custom center that will house the Intel nuc and I have purchased 11.6" touchscreen display from Amazon:
EleDuino
USB Touchscreen Portable Monitor,11.6" 1080P FHD IPS Display,USB C/HDMI Video Input, HDR,Ultra Slim,Bulit in Speakers.
Now i'm just trying to figure out my best option for the OS that has a an Automotive ui.
I really like the Xtrons ui but i'm not really sure how to install it or get the files needed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and i'm going to start a thread with the install, parts and step by step build guide.
Thanks in advance for any input

What headunit can I get!?

Hi everyone, I basically have an ongoing project at the moment where I'd like to have a headunit in the open top kit car me and a friend are building. Everything is full on stripped down back to basics, no ABS, no powersteering but we're keen to have a bit of fimiliarities with the headunit. I'm struggling a little bit on exactly what to get, I don't know if an off the shelf solution exists or if I'd have to go down something like the rasperry pi route but effectively here's what I'm after from the unit. Don't mind the idea of a tablet of sorts as well, but it would need multiple USB slots (see below).
Android OS is probably best for what we're after however open to suggestions/other ideas
Multiple USB slots 3 minimum - 1 for ODB/ Diagnostic connection, 1 for Apple CarPlay and the other for DAB radio if required
Resistive touch screen - there's no roof on the kit car we'll do our best to weatherproof it but we'd like for the screen to be not effected by droplets of water if it does start raining
Something that's not incredible slow
The monitor and the OS can be two separate devices if required e.g Resistive monitor and then trailing a HDMI/USB to the computer which would be in a dry wiring tray.
Has anyone done this? Seen anything that'd suit? We're really open to suggestions and looking to find a solution asap.
Perhaps post in the Android head units forum, this thread is for specific "MTCD" units.
Most units I have seen are Capacitive screens not resistive, but rain does not affect either really when you dry them off.
If you are looking for reliable Apple CarPlay then Android head units are not the best bet.
I know that the Dasaita PX6 head units have a HDMI out which you can connect another touch screen to for dual touchscreens.
I have the Dasiata in a topless jeep which has had some (light) rain on it in the past with no ill effects.
Sorry all, new to the forums I'll post in the correct place now
