I assume you've already clicked 'yes'? I don't have this pop up each time I reboot..
I have it too. Maybe a software bug .

The prompt only appeared once I encrypted my SD card.
I hit no. I don't want then saved on sd card. But if that's the only way to stop the message then I guess I'll nave to.

That's not the point. But the internal memory is faster for pictures and videos.
I have this issue on my G3 also after the 5.0 update

If the camera saves its photos to the SD card, then I edit the photo in the Gallery app, the app cannot save the edited photo back to the SD card.
If the camera saves its photo to internal storage, I can edit the photo and save it to internal storage. Then move the images to the SD card.
Yeah, that's a little cumbersome.
Mine is a stock, unrooted LG-H810.
And I see this has been a problem since KitKat.

That's weird, but if you edit a phote that was saved on the sdcard can you still save it to the phone instead of saving to the memory when you have the photo saved on you sd card?

I never save them to the external SD card. It's much more difficult to gets apps to play nicely with the external storage, both editing and deleting, plus it's much more likely for the SD card to become corrupt than the internal storage.
Non-booting phone: photos on external sd are safe.
Dropped broken phone: photos on external sd are safe.

Middle of nowhere. Taking 212 incredible shots.
Walking back. Phone drops. Broken. 212 incredible shots down the drain.
Nothing yet uploaded to Google Photos. Bam! All gone.
Never happened in my last 9 phones. I'll take my chances . It was a joke. Of course the sd card would still have the pictures on it IF it survived the drop or damage too.
Just happened to me for the first time since I got the phone two weeks ago. Only difference was that the phone was switched off because I accidentally discharged the battery completely last night. I usually just leave it on the charger overnight and don't switch it off or reboot.
I have set it to use the external card in the camera app settings.
So, if I understand the direction this thread has taken, the camera should be allowed to save photos to internal storage.
And even though the problem was noted years ago, there's still no way for LG's Gallery app to edit a photo from the SD card and save the edited image back to the SD card.
And whenever I take a photo I should immediately use a file manager to copy the photo from internal storage to the SD card. Just in case.
Yikes.

Anyone know a reason why after rebooting phone the media scan takes a very long time?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It depends on how much you have on your sd card. The more you have the longer it takes.
I wonder what the ratio to time being done scanning is , because i only have maybe 2-3 gigs worth of media and it takes like 10 minutes to finish scanning media
It isn't just the size of the files. The number of files that it has to check matters too. If there are any folders that you don't need scanned, put a file called .nomedia in that folder and the scanner will skip that finder and it's subfolders.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
any way to find out what its scanning and where, or is it scanning the whole sd card?
It scans the whole sd card, except for folders with the .nomedia file.
What is the purpose of the scan? If I put the .nomedia file in every directory what would happen?
Then it won't know where pictures are music are on your sdcard. For example, pictures in a folder with .nomedia will not show up in your gallery.

So I can put .nomedia in many folders (like where apps are installed on the SD card) that I know no pics or music should be in.
Exactly what type of file does the .nomedia file need to be?

It doesn't matter. You can simply make it an empty text file. The media scanner just checks for a file with the name .nomedia. It doesn't care what kind of file it is.
will the .nomedia thing stop winamp from trying to play mp3(turns out they were .ogg) files that are simply sounds to a game? The game is dungeon hunter and the question is nearly academic because I don't really like it and will probably uninstall it in the near future.. But still, I want winamp to play my music mp3s, which are all in a folder /music and nothing else..
meh, I can just try it and see before anyone even reads this and replies..
SUCCESS! no more "raw1385" in my winamp playlist

I think if you put .nomedia everywhere you will basically lose all functionality of gallery, etc. You may want to try "Rescan Media ROOT" from the market. It requires root, as you can tell from its name, but it lets you turn off the automatic media scanning and do it manually whenever you need (which is almost never in my case). That combined with judicious use of .nomedia has been wonderful.
I guess if you change what media is on your phone a lot, this will be less useful, but for me, it's saved a tremendous amount of time and helped convert my high-powered media-scanning device back into a phone.
do you think that the type of sd card , like the stock one that came with the phone might be lower quality and take longer or is there one thats extreme high quality ?

The sdcard included is only a class 2, but it has more than enough throughput for the media scan. You can get a class 4 or class 6 card, but I doubt it will make much of a difference in the amount of time the media scanner is running.
My phone has been getting stuck often on the media scan process. Sometimes it get's stuck in the middle, sometimes it never stops. I recently reformatted my sd but the problem still exists. Also, I often have trouble mounting the sd in recovery. I'm using a class 6 8gb transcend which I've had for about a year or more. Is it possible my card is just going bad and is there a good way to tell?
Its the phone for some reason when I was on di18 it was taking a very long time to scan after awhile it just got really short. Sorry I don't the exact reasoning but I re formatted my card and it didn't help.

I guess you could try a different card with the same files and see what the difference in scan time is. Or try them both freshly formatted and empty.
There are always ways to test.
I bought a 32gb SD card for my Epic as I really need the space!
So I took my 16gb card, plugged it into my laptop, copied all the files to a folder and removed it.
I put the 32gb SD card into my phone, formatted it, removed it, plugged it into my laptop, dragged all the files onto it, removed it, put it back in my Epic and none of the apps that were on my SD card will run.
The Epic shows the massive amount of storage from the card, but it simply will not run any of the apps on the card.
Did I miss a step? Did I do something wrong? Can anyone offer any advice?
This is driving me crazy so any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
use a backup app?
Maybe if you use titanium backup or mybackup pro to make a backup of apks and data; copy all to the 32, pop it in and then restore the backup, there may be some other info that tells android where to find the apps and their data.
good luck
I just got a 32 card as well to replace my 16, did the same steps you just described and it never missed a step. All apps working normally. Can u explore android secure and see that they are in there. I know on some custom roms every so often, the system wldnt load the sd card properly. It wld show the apps as installed in app mnager, but wld be grayd out as if the card was removed. That was on eb13 and eco5 roms. I shld note I did the sd card switch while running hurricane eh17 gingerbread. Sorry, this is probly not anything helpful.
P.s. Most often had the loading issue when I had a ton of apps on the sd card.
I've tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to work. I even found this awesome free service called Tonido & tried that...no go.
When I put it in my phone it shows that 29 point something gb of storage is there so the phone is recognizing the size of the memory...but apparently the files aren't showing up on the SD card even though they are there. All that shows up in the app drawer are the apps stored on the internal phone storage. This is really frustrating. I really need some help with this
I would try app backup and reinstall or app backup reinstall.
They scan the sd card and show what you have and you can reinstall. Never tried titanium. So dont know if that works or not.
Best of Luck....Let us Know!!

Backing up is Very Very Important. No Matter the Case. Anyone, even Rooters and Developers will tell you that.
Sure at any point and time, not everyone, but Most have forgot.
Check your 32gb card folders if nothing inside 0kb then you have faulty card mean not truly 32gb but a lot less.

There's an app on the market that rescans your sd for you. Can't remember what its called and chances r it won't help it find the apps, but its worth a shot. Sd scan, or sd rescan, something like that.
If you go into settings, apps, manage apps, are these apps showing up there either?
Also, if u put the old card back in, do they come back?
I ended up buying My Backup Pro and it worked for the most part. I backed up everything online, swapped SD cards and "restored" to the 32gb card. A few photos & videos wouldn't back up. I'm also having some incredibly annoying issues with Beautiful Widgets. I have uninstalled & installed several times but it doesn't fix.
All my apps, data, pictures, vids, etc are still on the old SD card. Hopefully I can figure out how to take the BW stuff from the old SD card & get it to the new one.
Thanks all for helping me out.
Try "fancy widgets". I like it better than beatiful widgets. Tho, I don't think it has much more than weather, clock, and battery widgets. Some sexy skins available for it

The only issue there is that I paid for BW a long time ago. The standard skin works but none of the other ones will. Sucks.
I just don't get it.
My 16gb card has 14.73gb of space used. Which is why I bought a 32gb card.
I put every single folder, file, etc on there AGAIN (folder by folder this time) and my card still doesn't show all the files being on there. This tells me that for some reason that data isn't being recognized by the phone?
I can't believe I'm the first person that's ever encountered this issue!

Sorry mang. The only thing i can suggest is returning the card for a new one if its not too much of a hassle. I had similar trouble with my second 16gb card and i gave up and got a new one. If no one (who actually knows what they are talking about) checks in here, try reposting under a different description. Good luck
I dont know if this is possible, but since it says 29 total and 26 still available, and you were transferring over 14 gigs to it, maybe the card isnt even close to a 32gig and is just reporting that it is.

I think the only conclusion is that the card is corrupted in some way. It's the only explanation. The 16gb card is working fine...there's just no room on it!
Guess I have to return it and get another.
I've Googled this to death and can't find what is wrong. Apparently my system is taking up 10gb of memory, but I've gone through every logcat folder and other folders and can't figure out what the problem is.

Honestly I've been having internal and external issues with storage and cm11.
It's really odd how it's acting, but for me it's adjusting stuff IE removeing, adding folders I have to re-scan the storage be it internal or external...to even get things to notice....that or a reboot. Moving files from microsd to internal and/or back result in stalling out or not moving when it says it does move it, again re-scan seems to help at times when it says it moved it, but with the stalls it just hangs forever and never does anything.
I've had this with multiple Cm11 revisions, so I am leaning to KK being the culprit.
I keep looking around and can't really find MUCH at all on this sd card issues, but I have seen a few.
I have three 32GB class 10, a 16gb class 4, a 8gb class 6 and class 4.......every card has the exact same issue. So it's not releated to class or size.
I will however add CM1 does NOT like 32gb cards, as when I boot up it has a loop that keeps saying "sdcard removed unexpectidly......remounting sdcard" and it will loop like that indefinately until I go into storage settings. I don't have to touch any settings jsut enter it and it stops. After I exit out, it's fine until I acess the sdcard again and it acts all wonky again. It oesn't always loop, somtimes it jsut dones't see the cahnges made, but a lot of times it will then loop into the same "sdcard removed unexpectidly......remounting sdcard" loop, until I again enter the storage settings, and then stops again.
I'm surprised there aren't more posts about this.

Just a suggestion, and not sure if you did it this particular way or not, but sometimes I have to do it this way........instead of the normal "wipe" this and that, go to mounts section and format the areas....then do a wipe like normal. Make doubly sure you pull the sdcard though then it doesn't get wiped....I accidentally wiped all mine heh, good thing I had it all backed up on the pc.
Seems like no one has a solution for the sdcard issues I've read about and seen, that or else everyone is like REALLLLY busy, because forums irc chat, and online searches are like dead, can't get a rise out of anyone right now. If so it'd still be nice to get a "hrmm, I'm not sure" or a "how bout you just piss off" or a solutions or some kinda answer, even a... would at least show me people have read the post.
I just got cm11 back on.
I was using root browser before, but decided to look into this issue. I figured I'd start with a different explorer app so I tried ES File Explorer, but that didn't let me do root stuff, I'd hit root where there is suppose to be a menu under that, but it just went directly back to the folders I was in, so there was really no way to get r/w or root access or permissions. After looking at some forums I came across one that said try Solid Explorer out. I of coarse was leery and reluctant to try it, because I have been using root explorer for SO long.....just like the transition from ES FIle Explorer to root explorer, I was the same way with that transition, I always like to stick with what works, so going to something new and moving on, it really hard to do at times.
Well I finally took the plunge and went for it, and found out I don't have the issues I did before, everything works fine.....things seems to refresh/re-scan fine, and update to see the latest changes I have done, file transfer works good, everything jsut works.
So it seems it's not KK after all as I had first thought.....it was root explorer.
Evidently root explorer and ES have not modified or updated to work correctly with KK. That or else it's just this particular phone/model (Samsung S3 SPH-L710), but I really don't see it being that.
So all that being said, maybe try that out....it's free too, that's just the icing on the cake . It's actually a nice file explorer.
It's definitely not a file Explorer issue. Updates have not made this issue go away. Anyone else have insight into this?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
I would also like to figure out what is going on. Even when I plug my phone into my computer to look at files, there is hardly anything there, but it says i only have 230 MB left of storage on my 11GB internal drive. My apps take up 1.5 GB, pics 35 MB and everything else is just a few MB, yet I lost about 10GB of internal space. I can't even shoot a video on my phone since it only saves to internal drive and I don't have much space left.
Will someone please advise as to the best thing to fix this (I will admit, I am a bit of a noob)
Hi, new on the forum for the Tab 2 10.1, facing same memory issues as mentioned.
Currently on the latest CM 11 nighlty.
Would there be an update on this topic and how to solve?
txs!
Hello, I was going through a very serious problem since days. When we have few pics in Albums, it creates cache for those pics in memory qith folder name .thumbnails
Sometimes the size of these cache is more than 1.5GB+.
This is a big issue for devices like Xperia M, with very low internal memory.
So i got a way to solve this.
For that, you will need ES File Explorer. No root is needed for this.
You have to do is follow these instructions.
1. Open ES File Explorer.
2. Make the hidden files viewable.
3. Go to DCIM folder.
4. You'll see thumbails folder, delete it.
5. Now create new file and name it as ".thumbnails" without quote.
And you are done.
Click on "Thanks" is important before going to make this thing work.
Are you aware that despite reporting 1.5GB+ size, this folder takes only 30-40MB of your storage, right? It's an issue with the stock Album app that makes the database file size displaying incorrectly, replacing the stock version with an updated version in /system/app fixed that for me...
Also, preventing the folder being created cause a big performance loss in the Album app, since it'll always regenerate the thumbnails when you open the app, but after your guide the thumbnails won't be saved, so it'll do this all the time...
And additional info regeneration of the thumbnails every time you open album will cause more battery drain as it will increase the cpu load

Well, this will be helpful for unrooted 4.1 XM single phones who are running on very lesser internal memory.

Are you sure that the cache won't just be created again?
If the answer is yes, rather than the "how to", i would be interested to know why you think that it is a good idea to completely get rid of .thumbnails...

Yes, I'm sure.
Im using it, and the cache folder will be gone for life and about battery life, how much battery life it should take? Very few, we worry about memory and not battery.

I don't have a SD Card, but I have around 300-400 photos in the internal storage, in that case the battery loss will be noticeable (I tested your tutorial to measure and I lost 2% of my battery every time it regenerated the thumbnails). Also, the phone will get hot and laggy while regenerating the thumbnails, and it'll do this every time you use the Album app or the Photos widget. In that case I still prefer wasting around 30-40MB with the thumbnails folder than having the phone getting hot and laggy every time I need to access the gallery
Camera photos stored on MicroSD card.
Having the photos taken by the camera stored directly to the microSD card is not an option? [pause for effect]
I have a 64GB SanDisk Extreme, so it's faster than writing to internal storage anyway.
On 64GB nobody cares about a few indexing cache files...
In the Camera go to settings and change Data storage to SD card.
Basic 32GB Class10 MicroSD cards are cheap as chips these days.
No, camera can save in the SD Card normally, I just didn't buy a SD Card yet. My point is that even if you don't have a SD Card, the internal space you get freed by doing this tutorial (around 30-40MB) isn't worth because of the problems it causes (laggy gallery, phone getting hot, increased battery drain, etc)...
And here's a picture...

You can move pictures, music and videos to SD card too via:
Settings -> storage -> Transfer data to SD card (under Miscellaneous).
This is a reactive process task as it doesn't proactively move stuff as you can do with a lot of applications and the camera via settings.
But handy to have when one wants to do an internal data cleanup to free up what one can of the ~2GB internal storage.
I never said that camera wouldn't let me save in the SD Card, I have the same options you mentioned in my stock 15.2.A.2.5 too. I was referring to the .thumbnails folder, it'll be on your internal storage, and following the OP tutorial you'll permanently disable it, saving a few megabytes from internal storage, but as I said before, these few megabytes you save by following the tutorial aren't worth because of the mentioned side effects the tutorial causes...

I want to buy the Note. Been waiting for the kitkat update. Will 16gb be enough for on-device stuff like games and apps? Will games like modern combat save additional stuff to microsd. I plan on using a 64gb microsd.
No. Go with the 32. If you're tight on money order a used one from Amazon warehouse they can go as low as $356 for the 32gb.
I wish i went with 32gb. Will probably sell my 16gb and get a 32gb one

I'd say 32 GB as well. I have 32+64gb card fully using it. Would have gone with 128gb but they are too expensive atm.
A million times, thanks
You need more memory more than ever now that we're on KitKat. Apps can create and access their own files and folders on the external SD card but all other apps can't touch them because of new permissions Google introduced in 4.4. Samsung's apps (EG: Gallery, File Manager) have universal permissions which helps a little. The only way to get full external SD access is a to root.
Now, what price should I be looking for if I want to by used/refurbished.

I bought one 2 weeks ago on amazon warehouse and they sent me a first generation note 10.1. They would not send another stating they didn't have any in stock.
Kit Kat and SD Card
I upgraded my Galaxy 10.1 (2014 edition) which has 32 gigs. I found I had several apps installed on a micro sd card that worked with version 4.3 and still work with 4.4.2. Also I downloaded a couple of apps since then and I found I could move them to the micro sd card ant app seems to run as normal. Maybe before Samsung made 4.4.2 available they changed something to work from the card. If you have any apps in the main memory that you have downloaded see if they can be moved to sd card. Some can and some can't. Depends on the developer.

Try moving a file or creating a folder on the external SD card with a non-Samsung file manager. You can't. Even if you could, only the app that created the folder or file would have access to it. I used to sync files on my N3's external SD card with my home server using FolderSync and it worked flawlessly on 4.3. Once I updated to 4.4 FolderSync spits out error messages every time it tries to write a file to external storage. This has been an issue since KK first landed on a device with external storage (which was the Google Play Edition SGS4 in November). It is what it is and, without rooting to change access permissions, can't be changed and affects every device equally. Thankfully for those of us that can't or won't root, Samsung at least provided some of their key apps with universal read/write permissions.
Here's what the "My Documents" folder created by Hancom on my external SD actually translates to on my N3.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

And external storage appears just like normal within any app that's created files or folders there.
I think 32gb is much better.
I am using 16gb now. In my SD some data(lecturenotes, docs, ebooks) and 2 custom rom files. Even i have neither podcasts nor movies, but my SD have only 2gb space now. I think 32gb or higher capacity sd will be much better.
Never enough. I can't wait for 64 and 128 to become the standard.

The work-around to getting pretty much anything to external SD is Samsung's My Files. The challenge is moving huge files, that or moving a lot of files simultaneously that are collectively huge. There might not be enough free space on your internal storage to get the files on to your device. Here's a couple of ways of getting files directly to external storage. Like everyone else I'm not thrilled with the new external SD card restrictions but there are ways to accomplish pretty much anything. The only thing I haven't found a work around for is syncing. I ended up moving a bunch of apps and files to external storage so I could move my sync folders to internal storage.
You can setup a two-window instance of My Files and drag-and-drop content directly from Dropbox to External SD.
You can also use Samsung Link to transfer files from another Samsung device, a PC, or a cloud service (Dropbox, OneDrive, Box) directly to external storage. IMHO, Samsung Link is one of the most overlooked features Samsung provides. It's fantastic for managing and viewing files across devices. For example, I can take a picture with my Gear which transfers it to my N3. I can view, edit, and share the pic from my N10.1-14 or PC seconds later. Anyway, here's a screen shot of it.
