So the other day I sucessfully rooted my phone by flashing SuperSU with a tethered CWM recovery. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of performing an OTA while the phone was rooted, causing a bootloop. I managed to get the device up and running by reflashing the bootloader, recovery, and a pre-rooted system.img. However, I now would like to get the phone back to how it was out of the box so I can get OTA updates. How can I do this? My phone is a ZE551ML WW.

just flash stock rom from Asus download desk and flash it via adb...Btw u can get updates on this one too but just make sure you un-root first before applying any OTA and yeah don't delete any bloatware or system app

I can't seem to get my computer to recognize the phone while it is in recovery mode. ADB works fine when booted into android though.
I was able to update the phone by putting the zip file in internal storage. Everything seems to be normal now.

Here is what happened, i downloaded the OTA from AT&T, unrooted my phone and installed the update. It went all the way through, rebooted and that's where it stops. As soon as the AT&T welcome screen comes up the phone just freezes. When i plug it to my PC the phone is not recognized. Kies says it can't connect to the device. I'm able to get into download mode and odin seems to find the phone. But in download mode there is no option to reboot or anything. It only says "custom" on all options.
Can anybody help?
Factory reset usually solves most boot hangups. It will wipe your internal sd if you have stock recovery though.
i can't find any option to do a factory reset. I flashed Philz touch with odin, it said it passed. Tried a factory reset but it still freezes at the AT&T homescreen.
Any other way to do a factory reset?
Why'd you re-root BEFORE installing the update? Is there a particular reason? From what I've read on here, towelroot will easily root it afterwards.

I took root off the phone since most of the time root stops OTA updates. Then i downloaded and installed the update. I had plans to root it again after the update.
Hello there. I also attempted the 4.4.2 OTA from stock 4.3, and now I'm having this exact same issue. The device had TWRP recovery installed, so I re-installed the stock recovery. It was also rooted and a few system files were edited (lock sounds, hosts file), I reverted all the changes, did a full unroot via SuperSU and proceeded with the OTA. It seemed successful until it tried to boot.. it now freezes on the AT&T logo, as the OP mentioned. I installed TWRP recovery again via Odin so I could back up all the data from the phone and do a factory reset. Unfortunately, this did not fix the freezing. I've attempted reverting back to the latest official Odin .tar (4.1.1), which I've now learned is not possible since the 4.3 update and its locked bootloader. It would seem that the only thing that would do the trick now would be an Odin-flashable 4.4.2 tar. For now, I've installed CyanogenMod as a temporary solution.
I dunno if it has been tested yet but this is a TWRP/CWM flashable zip which also preserves root.

It didnt work. I am currently uploading two more attempts now and will post the links in that thread as soon as they are ready.
this worked for me
Hi All, Just wanted to share a solution that worked for me. I was in the same boat. OTA update locked phone on ATT screen. Used steps 2 and 6 from link below and now have 4.4.2 running on my phone. Happy flashing.

my work requires encryption. i was on slimkatv22 at the time and had to encrypt. as encryption kept failing, i went back to stock. way back to stock.
so i'm running
JZO54K.I317UCAMH3 ROM
TEAMWIN Recovery
I317UCUCNE5 Bootloader
with Root and Busybox installed.
everytime i try to update via device update, it downloads, reboots and runs TWRP, I decrypt using password, reboots and the update fails with "Update Interrupted" message.
Is there a way to update ROM and keep encryption?
You can't OTA stock ROMs without stock recovery.

Thanks for your response. I tried updating ROM via ODIN and was not successful. Always got stuck in boot logo after i flashed new ROM.
Is there a stock recovery I should flash over TWRP to try?
Thanks for your help.
I have never used encryption so I can't really help if there are specifics around that. What exactly are you trying to install through Odin? If it's the firmware such as THIS it should overwrite the custom recovery with the stock one. If the stock ROM isn't booting you might have to boot into recovery and factory reset/wipe dalvik cache. This is my first Samsung phone so if nothing helps someone else who'd like to offer their assistance would probably be more knowledgeable.
I was going back to stock, which I guess, was mostly successful. however, I've not been able to install new ROM, namely 4.4.2 I317UCUCNE5. so if I install from your link, that should overwrite custom recovery and allow me to upgrade to 4.4.2 ROM either OTA or via Odin?
Maybe? Using the OTA always tells me there isn't an update (cause I'm on T-Mobile I guess?) and I haven't seen any files to update to Kitkat firmware through Odin

Hi all, in need of advice. My m8 is currently rooted with twrp and s-on. I flashed stock recovery a while back for an update which I thought was 4.4.3 but turned out it wasn't so went back to twrp. Now update has finally hit I've flashed stock recovery and tried to install ota and its not working, even tho it worked fine for last update (which turned out to be a Firewater patch)
My q is. Can I install it using custom recovery if I have the update zip even tho I'm s-on? Happy with sense so not looking at custom roms for this phone.

Have you removed any stock apps i.e bloatware ??????
None. That's what's really bugging me. It's worked fine last update so only thing I did was put twrp back on so I could use external sd and left everything else as it was so I was ready for update coming.
I even wiped phone and started it from New and I still get the red exclamation.

Have you still got TWRP installed?
You will need stock recovery
Same issue for me this morning. I have stock recovery and removed xposed. The update aborts shortly thereafter
To try and get further I used an older nandroid backup (1.54.61.5 cid orang001) and stock recovery, it updated itself but not to 4.4.3, it was just to the 1.74, and from there it just will not update.
I have the 4.4.3 correct cid zipped update file from here. Is there no way of restoring it?
Hey guys, I have got some troubles in flashing stock recovery. Currently my m8 is running Android 5.1 (GPE) and I have rooted it via TWRP. When I tried to flash the stock recovery to get an OTA, it showed the recovery had been flashed successfully. However, when I reboot to recovery, I saw a Red triangle with an exclamation mark says error. This is not my first time to flash stock recovery and it used to work. I have no idea on what is going on at this moment. Need your help.
Android version: 5.1
s-off
unlocked
build number: LMY470.H9
If you get a red triangle in the recovery, that is normal. I have it on my phone as well and the OTA worked successfully.

hey thanks for replying.
I have tried to upgrade my phone under this condition, however, it comes with an error again. (also a red triangle when OTA)
Last time when I flashed the stock recovery, the phone became unrooted. And the OTA worked successfully. But this time even I flash the stock recovery, it is still rooted. I don't know how to deal with it.
I have heard that some of the recent OTAs do not update properly if the phone is rooted. I've never rooted my phone at all so my updates have worked fine. You might need to unroot before you proceed. That can be done via the SuperSU app.
It's a fact that on sense roms ota don't even work when you unroot the rom !
In that case you need a NEVER rooted rom and stock recovery. This came in the picture since lollipop ! Guess its no different for GPE

thanks man! I have unrooted it and now the OTA works
In short, I have a SM-T800 on 4.4.2 stock. I have TWRP installed. The problem is the USB is out of order, it's just busted on hardware level, so I can't use ODIN or ADB or anything requiring USB.
Does there exist a way to flash the device upwards (maybe to 6.0.1) with only these tools available? I can't get OTA updates due to the custom recovery.
I've tried flashing with FlashFire a stock 5.0.2 firmware from samsung-updates, but FlashFire can't flash the bootloader, and the SM-T800 needs a bootloader upgrade to go over 4.4.2. The flash resulted in softbricking, but I've managed to return back to working 4.4.2.
Basically what I need (I would imagine) is a TWRP flashable package, which includes the bootloader.

There is literally no way to flash the bootloader except by official means.
Kingroot is able to root most LL roms.
So if you go back to complete stock you can take the OTA and get the LL bootloader.
The thing I'm not sure about is if you will be offered the LL update or just the MM update.
Once you have the LL bootloader you will be able to root and install MM via FF.

Thanks, I'll have to go back to stock recovery then and see after if I can get rooted without USB after that, will see.
But how do you get back to stock if your on a custom room. I can't seem to get the right file to work. Everytime I try and extract and do it through Odin it fails
