[Q] Audio distorted during call? - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a problem with my Zenfone 2 ZE551ML.
During a call, suddently the audio gets heavily distorted and I can barely understand what the other speaker is saying, the voice is metallic and disturbed. I'm using the phone with Italian operator TIM. It happens totally at random, I also tried to return my phone and get another one, but even with the new one it still happens. It does that with the wired headphone, with the phone's speaker, with my car's bluetooth... I have no idea why. I'm running the latest firmware.
Does this occur to anydoby else?

Doesn't happen with mine on T-Mobile, maybe you should try a factory reset before exchanging the phone.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"

Well, I did try a factory reset and i ALSO exchanged the phone for a new one, and I still have the same problem. It's either a firmware issue or an operator issue, but I'm betting it's got nothing to do with the operator since it's the same SIM that was in my old Nexus 5, with which I never had any problem.

Can you exchange it for a 3rd one then? Or maybe try a SIM from a different carrier as a test.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"

I have same problem with Italian operator wind. I wrote to Asus and they urgently asked me to send them my phone. I think and hope it's a factory problem they can fix.

There are several helpful tips regarding basic troubleshooting techniques under Apps/ASUS Support/Assistance. One method for this issue is to check to see if 'AudioWizard' app is turned on, and try disabling by powering it off.

Yes, it makes no difference if audio wizard is on or off.

Actually, since I'm rooted, I tried to disable Audio Wizard completely. Will post results.

I'm on my third ZenFone 2 and they all do the same thing with me as well... the audio will randomly distort during a call. I can replicate the issue through speaker, handset speaker, and bluetooth. Mine isn't quite as severe as yours, it will get choppy for a second then straighten out, every 30-60 seconds or so. I've replicated this issue on both stock ROMs and rooted ROMs with the Asus apps frozen.

Still no difference even after disabling sound wizard. I'm starting to think that this is a structure flaw of this particular model.

The latest firmware seems to have solved this issue. The problem has not re-occurred yet.

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one having this issue. I had a Nexus 4/without issues on Bluetooth in my car using grom audio BT adapter.
I am with Wind in Canada and have had the issue since I bought the phone. I was hoping firmware would fix it, but it still occurred yesterday using firmware 2.19.40.22.
I have checked the sound wizard, but not a factory reset. Guess I could try that today.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks
exx

So it's November and the issue is still a thing on my ZE551ML. It happens with approximately every third phone call - the sound gets suddenly distorted, I can barely understand the other person and he has trouble hearing me as well. Phone unrooted, stock ROM, latest OTA update (WW 2.20.40.97). I have just tried to turn off Audio Wizard for now, let's see if this helps.

I solved sending the phone to Asus assistance, they have changed the motherboard and fixed the problem. They have taken about 15 days. No money required because it's a warranty repairing.

Thank you for your answer. I have found out, that this issue happens ONLY when mobile data are on. If the problem occurs and I turn the data off, sound quality is normal again. It's probably somehow connected with the data network available in the moment (EDGE, 3G, LTE), because data on doesn't always mean the sound gets distorted. If I understand it right, 4G works on the similar frequences as GSM - so it could be some conflict between voice services and internet services (bad priority settings or something?). It seems to me, that after latest firmware update, the issues is not THAT bad, bud still annoying.
Does anyone know what might fix this? Or is there at least any tool that would disable mobile data during a call and turn it on again when the call is over? I would prefer not sending it for repair, cause you know, time is precious.

Yes: I get exactly the same symptoms; my current 'phone is the replacement model for exactly the same problem as the first zenfone 2
tried everything including selecting 2/3G new sim card but it occurs on both #1 or # 2 sim cards and it is intermittent
Methinks it MUST be a hardware problem. All ideas and suggestions welcome as I do like this phone....if only it would work as a phone!

[Q] Potential Design Flaw / Dropped call or hang up

Hi All,
I got the Tmobile Note 2 couple days ago and have been slowing increasing my usage. I have discovered a problem that I would need to the community to help me resolve to identify if I have a bad phone, or it maybe a more serious design flaw.
First, I have repeatedly able to pinpoint the problem: If you are using the hotspot that T-mobile provides for you, and you are tethering with your device; when someone calls you and you accept the call, the chances of the phone hanging up on its own without any human interaction increases dramatically if there are connections using the hotspot, i.e. Another device connecting/disconnecting from the hotspot, or lots of data traffic, etc...
The dropped calls looks likes the phone just hung up the line in the middle of a phone call. To me, the "dropped call" can be anywhere between 5 seconds to 5 minutes. I was able to repeat this issue at least 10 times in a row already and thus my concern. I have identified and replicated this problem at many many different location with many many different signal strengths, indoor, outdoor, in the car, on the can... etc....
If you guys can repeat this problem, let us know, because I do not realize any limitation of simultaneous of using the hotspot feature and the voice calling radio.
thanks ALL!
Just wanted to report back:
I just got back from the tmobile store with a brand new Note 2, and when I tested in store, guess what?
It happened the same way on the new device!!!
I'm pretty sure that it is either the design flaw of the Note 2, or there is something wrong with the build of Tmobile or JB.
Nevertheless, I hope some experts can point out what can be done to resolve this, and maybe people who have flashed to the custom roms can see if they can replicate the problem.
Basically, turn on Hotspot, connect a tethering device to the hotspot, call the phone on another line, answer the call, then disconnect a device from the hotspot.
Chances are the phone will automatically hang up the call after the first couple of tries of connecting and disconnecting the tether devices.
Thank you!

There are some serious flaw in the software/hardware in this phone. I have been able to replicate this problem with 100% success. Just go and turn hotspot on, and tell someone to call you, soon enough the phone will hang up the call.
I'm thinking hard of just not needing such a big screen and go for a nexus 4 instead.

I have experienced this problem with almost every network and phone.... Not necessarily the T-mobile app but tethering apps in general... Even if your device supports data and voice I have experienced this with pretty much all apps but I don't know if it's just me or what.... I don't really have a problem with it as I don't accept calls when I'm tethering anyways... Just my .02 cents

I experience something similar. I got tmobile note 2 on att .after like 5 min talking .my mic mutes.i can hear the other person but they dont hear me ,till i put speaker
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
Well, for me its slightly different....
1. Wifi calling enabled and activated (blue icon)
2. if someone calls me 5, 10 , 15 min etc... later, the caller hears silence and the phone does not ring.
3. happens every damn time. I plan on calling tmobile about this....
4. the only time it works is if i make an outbound call, and within a couple mins someone can call me.. but if the phone sits there for more than a few min.. nobody can call me.
I was in a call when someone else called in and the phone froze up happend several times im really considering returning this phone

[Q] Call quality - other person cannot hear me

My T-mobile LG G3 has been working like a champ for many months. Now, call quality for person to whom I am speaking is very poor. It sounds like there is very faint speaking that drops in and out. This happens both on bluetooth and off, but is worse on bluetooth. There is no physical block to built-in or headset microphone. I know this because can record voice memo and do 'OK Google' dictation with ease. VOIP calls (Google hangout) are ok given my WiFi bandwidth.
T-mobile tier2 support tried to sell me on notion that lollipop might fix me (based on www_androidauthority_dot_com/lg-g3-problems-517832 ) but I'm skeptical and jumped at the offer of a handset replacement. Any other ideas out there?

Wow, my G3 just started doing this too. I've had it for 6 months and it's just been the past week that I've been having issues. It's hit or miss, but about 90% of the time I get complaints that the other person can't hear me or that I sound very faint. It's been driving me crazy. I've figured out that I can toggle speaker mode and it fixes it. Can you try that out see if it's the same for you?
I noticed this about a week ago, interesting. Wonder if it's something on tmobile's network.
This just happened to me as well on Tuesday, March 10th. I live in Los Angeles. A reboot seems to fix it for one call. This is kind of a big problem.

I'm now running in safe mode and a couple test calls to my Google Hangout sound fine. Don't think it's a hardware issue.
I've started to experience this too. It's really annoying. I hope it gets fixed soon. Though, I am glad to know it's not just me. I really didn't want to dig around in my apps to find the offender.
Question: Do any of you guys have the Nova Launcher Beta running? I think I started having issues around then.

Thanks! I downgraded and installed Google App 4.1.29 here http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-search/google-app-4-1-29-1706998-arm-android-apk-download/. Also disabled auto-update for Google Apps so it doesn't update to 4.2.16.87075793. I'll test it out and see what happens.
I also have had the same problem lately, just twice. A reboot fixed it
This is affecting me as well. I'm also in Los Angeles and the phone was fine until some time last week. I'm trying to the google apps downgrade now...
I also am having the same issue in my D851. My phone worked fine for 2 weeks and now 75% of the time the caller on the other end says they cant hear me and I sound like I am a mile away. This does not happen when I used VOIP such as hangouts. I am thinking about flashing a AOSP ROM until the t-mobile 5.0 build comes out.

Try downgrading the Google app. Worked fine for me.
Downgraded, seems better. Are people also recommending not to use voice activated Google now?
How do I downgrade the google app? I tried turning off the "OK Google" way, but still have the same problem.

In the play store for the Google search app click the uninstall button. That will return the app to it's factory version. Then just install the version that's linked earlier in this thread. Make sure you have automatic updates turned off for the app or it will keep updating.

Same thing happens to me. I had my phone for about 2 months now and sometimes people cant hear me or i sound like a transformer. i restart my phone and it fixes the problem but still does it after a couple days. I'm not rooted or anything like that. I also have a problem when I'm on a call. my volume bare goes up and down if i wanna lower and or raise it and the volume sounds the same even on speaker phone it does it too..
I had the problem turn off ok google from any screen and reboot and problem with voice calls fixed
I had this same problem. Maybe I should have came here first. I got a replacement in the mail a couple of days ago. New one seems to be working fine. Hopefully the problem doesnt start happening again.

I was gonna do a factory reset and if that didn't work i was gonna get a replacement . Hopefully this fixed the problem. The only issue I seem to be having is. when I'm on speaker phone or have it to my ear. and when i go to adjust the volume it doesn't change it. like i see the meter go up and down but the volume stays the same. its weird
I can confirm that after enabling voice activation for google now from any screen was the culprit of Mt audio issues. I was told I sounded far away or like a robot far away. Reset my device numerous times and reinstalled all apps and made calls. Once I enabled OK google from google now the issue came back. Disabled it and BOOM it worked fine. Haven't had an issue since.

I have the same issue sometimes, I've read around the web and it seems to be a mix of software and hardware related, I read a guy suggest removing and putting back the case (in case you have one) and I did that and the sound came back, haven't had the issue again.

Hmm, I keep mine out of a case,.. Yeah I'm not sure what it is, it's a 50/50 between some say software and some say hardware. I would asume that software would of been fixed by now, either Samsung or 3rd party

So I found a solution for the issue in my case, it does seem to be software but it's really weird cause the issue continues in any firmware, it started when I was on 6.0.1 PI2, then I flashed Nougat and had the same problem (I hated it and battery drain was killing me) I went back to 6.0 and changed to the PK2 version and the issue continued, it was really weird cause it would cut out in audio messages, games but not music, I also tried every single suggestion on every forum and post I could find EXCEPT the Soundabout app, today I gave up, installed soundabout, selected media to speakers and bam, problem solved, I still need further testing, but it seems ok for now, keep in mind that I also have "prevent USB audio routing" on and "Easy Mute" off.

Hi. I dropped my phone and have the same problem now. Did you get any useful help?

Microphone not working

Since yesterday evening I did encounter the following problem.
Plugging my earphones wouldn't send any audio to them, speakers always active.
Microphone nevers works, not in calls, not in apps, not while recording a video.
I did perform a factory reset and installed paranoid android, still the same problem. I am restoring OxygenOS last version right now...
It's been a very frequent problem since the beginning of october, did anyone encounter this issue recently?
This sounds like a hardware issue to me. Were there any potentially problematic events (drops, moisture ...) in past 2 months?

Not earphones issue... I had to simply clean the connector, the female jack on the phone, there was some cotton on the end!
Edit: the mic and the earphones works for few minutes, but after a while they completely stop, only a phone reboot solves the problem (just temporarily!)
I did install the Android Mic Fix Magisk module... My phone seems to be working correctly since few hours now.
Update: not even Android Mic Fix solves this... the only temporary solution I have is to Reboot the device
frankdd89, have you found the solution? RN i have the same problem, I have flashed my and everything was solved but, like 3 days after again just stooped working well. I have a doubt whether is a hardware issue due to the mic works well during several days, let me know what did you at the end..

ive been having the same issue with my oneplus 3 for last 8 months. I have tried resetting, restoring, turning off google voice and have replaced the mic/charge port twice but nothing seems to solve the problem. Would really like to find a solution to this problem as i tend to think it's software related because i started having the problem after an update. At first was sporadic but mic is completely out now.
Hi all, i have the same problem with microphoned earphone
I have tried many type of earphone but the problem is the same (at the first connection and use, the microphone doesn't work , at the second try (record voice or call) without disconnection of earphone the phone change the icon in the status bar, from the icon of earphone with microphone to the icon of earphone without microphone and start to use the integrated microphone in the phone) i attach image of the status bar icon
- I have tried the same earphone into another OnePlus 3 of my friend and he doesn't have the issue
- The internal microphone work good
- I'm using a CTIA earphone (in this case i use Samsung original earphone with microfone founded into an original Samsung device box)
- I have tried to factory reset the phone, clean from dust the earphone hole but nothing as changed
now i think to send phone in warranty assistance to OnePlus ...

But nothing help. It works after a reboot for some minutes but that´s it.
Have any one found a solution for this issue?
Similar problems
I have similar problems. It started six weeks ago with the headphones that could not be detected. Then calling stopped working. Back then I rooted my phone and all the problems where gone. Until last Sunday my phone app crashed. Now all the problems are back again. I tried wiping all my data (also internal storage) and installing a custom ROM. This did not help. Does anyone have any suggestions? I really like the phone and it is still in mint condition.
Thanks in advance

Sound Issue: No internal speaker/No microphone/No sound by bluetooth

Hi guys,
Im here to speak about my mi 10t who got some sound/mic issue.
Everything was working good but one day, the phone muted himself on stock Rom.
When i tried to use the tap recorder, the app said "verify if an app is using the microphone an try again."
I try to put a Custom rom on it but it's the same with Lineage Os.
Now, internal and external speaker stoped working. Microphone too.
the bluetooth connect well to a device but when i play a song, no sound happen.
Even on twitter or reddit, when i tried to play a video its say, Error to load the video.
When i tried to call someone, the app close immediately
I can only send sms and read them.
Please helps
Hello,
I have the same problem just like you 1 month now, tried everything , even install custom ROMS but the problem remains.
Did you drop your phone down? I cant remember that i did , but if i shake my 10T pro near my ears i can hear that something is moving inside my device.
The temporary fix that i had was to reboot many times my device and reopen it , clear the data from phone services , but couldnt find any permanent fix though.
Does anyone else has this?

But the phone is like new and nothing is moving inside
Yes if i reboot/wipe data 363637x time it has a chance to work but the problem come back fast
I use a second phone where i put my sim on it and play with the mi10
It's sad because that 144hz screen is fkin good
And i still can't Say if it's a software or an hardware bug.
Because if i open the phone, change the internal/external speaker for nothing i will be a bit pissed
But still a good phone even muted aha

Hey,
Thanks for the answer.
I had a similar accident as well . My question though is what causes the sound issue. if i try to reboot/wipe this (which i dont want to wipe all my data every week ) there is a change also for me to work.
Do you have any idea how can i fix this ? should i give it to somebody who can open it for me as its a hardware issue?
I have the same problem, has anyone found the solution?

Hello,
I have the same problem just like you 1 month now, tried everything , even install custom ROMS but the problem remains.

Entirely unrelated to the issue, but just to calm some folks
The Mi 10T Pro model rattles because the camera has OIS (the camera module itself moves). This can also give a slight rattling effect when playing very loud music
Don't worry about it

Try to open the phone x50 times and dont let it close again....This is the only way that i found out , but cant/ dont have the time to switch it off x50 times.
same problem here...
i've dropped my phone one time and after that, no sound at all.
the assistance shop said that all the components were good, but the problem remains
my last try was to flash the xiaomi stock rom, but no results
Had a similar issue.
Even multiple factory resets also didn't help.
However tried another sim and did a reset and it was working fine.
Now then after few days it again happened
Now this time I probably understood what was triggering the issue. I had paired my headphones(Bluedio Turbine) with both my laptop and phone. Using one at a time it was working fine. However if there's a call from both laptop and phone then the phone went into this state.
Again tried resetting multiple times. This time tried replacing the sim with a different sim. Different from the one in previous attempt and the sim change trick also did not work. Then tried again with the same sim which had fixed it earlier and it worked.
So in short these are the steps that helped me. Seems like only sim might have worked however don't know for sure.
Take proper backup of your data. Also this may or may not work for you.
Factory reset from settings.
Shutdown phone.
Press volume up and power button and hold them for some time till the phone starts up.
Use power button and volume key to wipe data.
I did this 3-4 however I think so it is t required.
Replace your sim with another sim. I had replaced my Airtel sim with a different Airtel sim and it worked for me. However replacing Airtel with jio did not help.
Start the phone.
Setup the phone.
Phone might start behaving fine.

Ignore this. This again happened after the last fix. Now again I can not use the mic. In CIT check if I try to test any of the mics, top or main the app crashes. Seems to be related to the mic. However don't understand how come event Bluetooth calls fail.
Another thing that I tried was putting the phone in refrigerator for around 10-15 mins. The phone was switched off before being put in the refrigerator. It generally works after that.
However it is generally good only till a restart.
Try at your own risk.
Must be something to do with the firmware only. And problem seem to be happening at the time of a reboot. Right at the time when MIUI logo appears during a reboot, if you dont hear the bootup sound, then the system audio wont work.
What fixes for me is multiple reboots until you hear the bootup sound. Most of the time, it takes just a couple of reboot. Max it has taken for me is 7.
Problem with loading of audio driver?!
Hi all,
Is there any update on that issue ? I still have that phone doing nothing at the moment. So i was wondering if there is any chance to use it.
I have the same problem.

New Mi10T Pro - No Sound at all
Brand new device. Flashed custom OS (Arrow OS and google pixel)- no sound at all. No Youtube sounds, no call sounds, no media sounds, even Bluetooth, even with headphones. Phone are silent absolutely. Please help. Thanks in advance, guys!
forum.xda-developers.com
you may find a solution there.
I still have the error
Still same problem here. I even updated to a custom rom, but no difference. Even sound via bluetooth does not work nor sound via USB.
Anyone has a theory how that could happen?
