Speaker replacement - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, my speakers have blown. They crackle and distort. I've contacted HTC for warranty, but it sounds like a major ball ache. It'll take them 7-10 working days, and if they see any reason to reject the warranty, they'll charge me.
I've unlocked the boot loader from HTCDev, so I assume they would know that I've voided the warranty.
Has anyone replaced the speakers themselves? Where would I even look for parts?
Cheers

I returned mine to HTC (a UK repair place ) with unlocked bootloader for a cracked camera lens. No issues at all and returned to me within 5 working days free of charge. It's possible to relock the boot loader and return to complete stock but I just flashed a stock rom with stock recovery and left boot loader and s-off.
Up to you but they're meant to contact you before they proceed with any work that's not under warranty.
I'd try this before taking it apart

Did you go through HTC, or directly to the repair compnay?
HTC have said they will also update the software to the latest stuff for diagnostic reasons. I'm sure I read somewhere that Sunshine doesn't work with the latest handsets?

Through HTC. Sunshine worked for me on lollipop, phone is 4 months old. For hardware issues you shouldn't have a problem with modified software but I felt better for flashing the stock rom zip and stock recovery. They always say that unlocking bootloader MAY void warranty, but there is always the UK sale of goods act that they need to comply with too. Worst case is they charge you for return of phone but unlikely if you challenge them . You can ruu back to complete stock also but I never bothered. If you open your phone up yourself you're more likely imo to lose warranty and you never know when you may need it again

Repairing a hardware issue - No need to unroot? URGENT

My Desire's 24 month warranty expires the 14th of this month... Over the past 6 months or so i've noticed that the microUSB port has become so loose to the point that no cable I try stays in the port. So... I contacted HTC and arranged for a warranty repair.
They've told me UPS are coming to collect the phone tomorrow and I need to know whether or not my S-OFF, custom splash/bootanimation and custom ROM will make a difference when it comes to repair? In the phone's present state, running a RUU would be incredibly dangerous as the USB port is so loose that the cable could come out at any minute during the process.
That said, I don't see how they could possibly argue that customising a phone's software could lead to the USB port becoming faulty but I just need to ask for other people's experiences with hardware repairs.
Just check your policy. Mine states as long as the phone turns on they don't care what's on the phone. Just to be safe it's usually better to return to stock before sending it off.
Surely the warranty card is the exact same for all of Europe though?
To be sure... I downloaded the 2.3 RUU, extracted the ZIP and installed it by renaming it to PB99IMG.zip.
That "Quietly Brilliant" sound that plays during start up really brings back memories
If you flashed RUU successfully, HTC shouldn't have anything to complain about.
HTC want to charge me £70 to fix the phone or £23 to return it. Ridiculous, i'm not accepting anything but a repair or at the very least them returning my phone as it was.

Unlocking through htcdev.com and warranty repair - my story

I have bought through clove.co.uk my HTC ONE X.
I have successfully unlocked it through htcdev.com
Now I have a yellowish spot on the lower left corner - a hardware fault, clearly.
I have sent it back to clove.co.uk
They told me that HTC has some doubts about free of charge repairing.
I will keep you posted.

please do..as your story seems quite interesting now. hopefully they will replace it for you but kinda makes you think twice before unlocking it now kinda makes me sad hearing that..i really do hope there is an S-OFF exploit cause if there is not i maybe just maybe might end up selling this and going back to either s2 or buy the s3 when that comes out and hopefully that bootloader will be unlocked...i am really loving my phone but things on this side seem so complicated compare to the s2 one
The htcdev unlock shouldn't affect your hardware warranty but it is worded so that in theory anything could be blamed on you altering the firmware. It would be daft if they do end up refusing to fix your phone for free as it is obviously nothing to do with the unlock.

Yea if you want an easy to root/mod phone Samsung ones are generally better.

I also have informed Clove that I have posted here.
Let's wait and see whether all the hype about HTC opening the bootloader is just marketing or has some sense. After all, I didn't alter anything hardware so if - say - some button or screen ceases to function or doesn't do it properly, why shouldn't warranty be valid??
The thing with the yellow point is well known. At least in Germany. Had a One X that had the same yellow spot on the left bottom of the display too.
Brought it back to the shop (Saturn) and get a complete new one.
Hopefully you get a new one, too!
Forget to mention that I've didn't unlock it.

The way HTC word it on htcdev is that because you're not using official validated firmware then you might have had faulty firmware which damaged hardware e.g. it was overheating but the firmware somehow managed to ignore it and continue.
It depends on what is faulty I guess. If the micro USB socket breaks then it is obviously nothing that could be caused by firmware.
The yellowish spot is probably the glue they used to stick the LCD to the touchscreen. There are quite a few mentions of similar spots on this forum. Was it there when you first got the phone?
Yes it was there but it went unnoticed due to excess of enthusiasm in going through each and every menu and too much work to take care of small details. but then, with time, I got aware of the yellow spot.
Clove also noticed it and sent the phone to HTC.
I avoided unlocking at HTCDev as I'd like to keep my warranty, so I will be waiting for Revolutionary

HTC is entitled to some form of protection. If you overclock and fry your CPU they shouldn't have to eat the cost. Friends who unlocked international phones have gotten h/w (display, build issues, etc.) related warranty service from HTC with no hassle.
Here's their policy:
It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty.
Unlocking the bootloader means that you now have the ability to customize software on your device. Please note that changing your bootloader can cause significant issues with your device and once you have unlocked your device, you have agreed to the disclaimer that states a change in warranty status such that in the event you render your device unusable, you are responsible for the recovery of your device, whether by repair or by other means.
It seems fairly reasonable. Asus has Prime owners completely waive their warranty rights, even for non-related issues, when they unlock their bootloaders. So it could be worse.
You know the old saying - "you play, you pay."

One one side - an entirely software based brick: user should pay. On the other side, failed hardware: manufacturer should pay. In between there may be differences of opinion!

I have also sent my phone in for a yellow spot. Phone was rooted on HTC dev. Right now the status is "In Repair". So we will see what they say. I did flash back to stock before sending it in.
i rooted my HOX also. after 2 weeks i noticed the wifi fault AND a yellow spot. relocked it and send it in for repair. returned the phone a few weeks later. Still had a wifi issue, but now i don't get warranty for their faulty repair the first time because they saw is was *relocked*
after a few angry phone calls i decided to fix it my self

My status just changed to "REPAIR COMPLETE". So i think i am in the clear.
I think due to a bad install of a rom on my part the phone would not charge.I had used Htcdev to unlock but reset to facory settings before sending it back to HTC for repair.I have been told its been repaired and on its way back to me.

And now it shows the phone is being returned. So looks like they didn't care/check that my phone was "relocked".
UPS is set to drop it off tonight, but i am away on business so won't be able to report back on the quality until this weekend.

unofficial bootloader unlock

Hey guys, do you think there will ever be a way of unlocking one x's bootloader without having to tell HTC you intend to do it? I presume that when you do so HTC automatically putts your device on a "rebel list" and if you ever need some official repair, they're gonna charge you extra. And I don't like that idea at all. Do you?
HTC have allowed people to unlock their phones but by doing so you essentially loose your warranty. By making you use their website to unlock, they know which phones have been unlocked and if your phone is returned for a software fault they can deny you a warranty claim.
At least they let you unlock in the first place! The choice is yours.
I do think that a work around will be found in time..

Yep, that's exactly what they did and I don't like it a smallest bit! I really miss the times of good old HSPL on my HD2. When something broke it took literally 5 minutes to put the phone back to stock and no one would be able to tell it ever was otherwise... I wonder what are the DFT guys doing these days!
Not correct so far you stay on original ROM but you can mabe get problem if you send phone for warranty claim with custom installed.
Lock bootloader and original ROM before you send it if needed
So you're saying that after I receive the unlock code from HTC they won't put my device into some badass database which later on they might use to disprove my (for example hardware fault) warranty claim?

[Q] Am I screwed with the HTC warranty department?

Last week I was taking some photos with my M8 and noticed that they were just absolutely awful. I know the M8 doesn't have the greatest smartphone camera out there, but these shots looked like they were being taken through a cloud. Naturally I called HTC and explained the problem to them. They told me that I could do an exchange if I paid $19 for the shipping to and from them. I agreed and shipped my phone out a few days ago. Today I received an email telling me that my phone is out of warranty and if I want it fixed I have to pay $290. As soon as I read that I realized that I had forgotten to return my phone from "S-Off" to "S-On" before sending it. After Googling if that was the issue, I read that HTC usually doesn't care if you're S-On or S-Off since they occasionally ship devices out with S-Off on accident (I'm not sure if this is true, though). So I'm not sure what else it could be. I called again, made sure they knew I had the Developer Edition, and the representative told me to call back in a couple days and they'd be able to explain everything to me. Now I'm extremely worried that I'm either going to have to pay $290 or just deal with the issue for the remainder of the time I have with the device.
Does anyone have any experience with the HTC warranty department that can tell me what might be going on and how to deal with them in the event that this doesn't go my way? Thank you!
It is caused by the coating on the camera. There had been a lot of threads about the issue. I have not had that problem yet on my phone but if it does show up, it is good to know there is no need to panic because it is just a simple fix.
Normally, HTC reserves the right to void your warranty if you unlock the bootloader. But seeing as the DE comes with the bootloader unlocked, its never been clear to me how the warranty works in that case, I'd be curious to hear how they respond.
And yes, as the previous response states, the "cloudy" photos is an issue with the camera glass or coating being easily scratched, which is easily fixed by polishing with toothpaste, Turtle Wax, etc.
****. I just sent back my old one and forgot to s-on. I hope it doesn't happen with me. I'll have them send it back before I pay them any more money. I've had problems with both my replacement and original. I'd like to switch to a whole new phone at this point.

Unless its a Dev Edition like the OP, S-on or off doesn't matter if you unlocked the bootloader. They have a record of your IMEI when you unlocked.

Well I contacted HTC and they said warranty is voided when s-off. Trying to see what they can do since I can't afford the full price of this phone. Tbh I would go back to my s4 and send both these phones back. I'll try to keep my progress updated here. The replacement I got is also defective in speakerphone during calls and GPS locking. I pray they allow me to send this replacement back and not have to pay an insane amount for this.

[Q] Please can any developer Help me? I'll pay good for that problem.

I've bought HTC One M8 a week ago and excited to root that. So I did unlock bootloader and that phone is out of warranty now.
I noticed microphone is not working while talking and sound recording. But if I use speakerphone they hear me.
Microphone at the back working great. Is that possible with any program or firmware to use microphone at the back while in normal mode ?
If any1 make a program or apk like that, I'll pay good.
Please help me.
Regards..

Try a factory reset maybe?? Could be a software issue.
Was the microphone working before you unlocked the bootloader?
I did try that but still not works. I also try different roms and still same :/

I really didn't try that. Btw microphone works great sometimes and sometimes not..
Please correct me if I am wrong but I think worst to worst you can always relock the bootloader, flash stock image, basically "un-root" to gain the warranty back?

All HTC would have to do is look in bootloader to see it was RELOCKED instead of LOCKED.
It can be made LOCKED with s-off, and than made s-on again (although not sure about the s-on part, I haven't actually seen a process to do so). But HTC will always have a record of the bootloader being unlocked via HTCDev.com.
Although some have argued that HTCDev.com only tracks that a unlock bin code has been issued, and they have no way of knowing if you actually used that code or not.

So is there no way to talk with second microphone at the back?
If the mic works sometimes, there are 2 possibilities:
A firmware issue
Mic is loose.
1-Try upgrading/downgrading the firmware and see if that helps
2- If you are not concerned about warranty, open the phone and check the mic.
If warranty is still accountable, go back to stock and apply for it. The worst it can happen is that they say to you, we cant because it was unlocked. Then you go back to step 1.

ifixit has a 2/10 score for repairability with the M8. I bent mine, and almost every repair shop I went to said they wouldn't even try to fix it.

Technically, almost anything is possible. But whether such a thing exists, or can feasibly be made (or any dev interest in doing so) is another story.
Maybe see if a rule exists of can be created for the AutomateIt app? Situation like this seems right up the alley for that app.
Just went through the exact same scenario and was about to ship my phone on for repair.
Before you do that, take a toothbrush and slowly scrub the bottom speaker grille. Focus mostly on the left 2/3's of the grille. You will quickly see a bunch of crud coming out.
After cleaning it, give the mic a try and see if it's back to normal.
