Worst Rooting Issue - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So, upon opening this you're probably thinking "this idiot needs to research and look up the forums for his common issue."
I can say that while I am new to this page, and also new to andriod dev tools, I am not new to technology or research. :silly:
I've looked at many forums, performed many searches and the like.
If you read all of this and find a simple issue or something I missed, please feel free to condescend and tut tut,
correcting me of my foolish ways.
I'll just jump right into the issue then...
So I'll start by saying that I've downloaded the proper drivers for my Nexus 2013 FLO/wifi.
(See the troubleshooting notes)
I unlocked the device, and used both TWRP and Clockwork (the latest versions per my device nexus 2013 flo)
Booting into either recovery partition, TWRP or Clockwork mod gives me the same error message log upon start.
Code:
ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.4.7
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: Can't open /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
(No such file or directory)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_install
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_install
E: Can't open /dev/block/platform/msms_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
(No such file or directory)
TWRP, in essence, gives me the same log.
Troubleshooting notes:
Understand that each of these methods have been done in combination with each
other variation in the multiple categories. It's been a maddening process.
Driver Installation
-Nexus Root Toolkit
-NetHunter Installer
-Android studio bundle
-Manually
(Each time I uninstalled the prior driver before installing the other version.)
Misc
-Attempting to push any mods/rom/img or access storage of any kind
using SDK gives me nothing.
-Typing
Code:
adb devices
gives me a blank space when booted into TWRP or Clockwork recovery.
-I've tried using either recovery image to format my devices storage to a more susceptible file structure,
but same error messages come up
Code:
Error mounting /(any directory)
Downloaded files
latest and second to latest files for
clockwork recovery touch 6.0.4.7-flo
twrp-2.8.6.0-flo
android studio bundle-141.1903250
SU
UWT
Understand simple fixes like shutting off the device and restarting it before taking a certain step or
completely starting over, locking it, formatting to factory image and trying it again have all been attempted,
multiple times in different sequences of iteration. I'm really hoping for a knowledgeable community to come
in and save me here. I bought this device for the purpose of playing with NetHunter on my deployment her in
Kuwait. I have much time, and much more to learn. Help me root this sucker!!!
Thanks guys!

I think you're probably having the same issue if you've recently purchased the device, and need to try the MultiRom version of TWRP.

Thanks!
I'll try that and respond with the updates.
-EDIT
It worked!!! Thanks!

Nice! Hopefully the next TWRP update resolves this on the standard TWRP.

OMG thank you... this has been driving me insane, had the same experience as OP with a Nexus we just got a week ago that came pre-installed with 5.x.x... PLEASE someone add the linked info to the guide at the top of the section for this device. Following the instructions there resulted in my uttering bad words around my children because of the lack of indication of this issue.

I hate to say it but it sounds like a brick, these devices have a nasty habit of bricking themselves. The same thing happened to me(and a bunch of other people), at first it wouldn't mount the cache, then the system wouldn't mount next it wouldn't turn on at all. I had to send it in to Acer to be repaired. Their is more information about it in the brick thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735480
The freeze along with those are the errors most commonly seen when the emmc dies, meaning bricked. Even if it wasnt dead, flashing a stock ROM won't work, as you are unlocked.
Beat me to it
There must be a way... i'll rip it open and DD the damn sd if I have to. I don,t have the $ to repair it.
PIO ! Can you help ?
in the same shoes. Bought on craigslist, like new condition (no scratches anywhere, ran very well). I'm not scared to open this thing up but is there anyhting we can do? Would we have to change the motherboard? Can anyone give us some help? Obviously no warranty and a repair shop will be more than what I paid for device. My wife will be "displeased" with me if I go out and buy a new one, but I'm about to that step if we cant find some way to repair. Thanks for any info at all.

Motherboard replacement by you or Acer, no other way.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I would open it up and change motherboard, but having hard time finding one at reasonable price. If anyone has luck finding any please post a link.

That thread has the part numbers you need to search. It looks like used ones run about $59-89. Almost the price of a used or refurbished A100.
Thanks. Im going to keep an eye On ebay for one with broken screen or similar issue. Don't really want to pay more than 50-60$, since I only paid 100 for tablet. But I spent about that much on accessories, so would be nice to get fixed so I could use it on job sites. Just got the Lenovo ideatab and like it, but sometimes I miss the smaller screen and the ability to fit in my cargo pocket. I will let you all know if I happen across a cheap enough solution and let u know how it works out.

I did have exact same message on a HTC Desire SV with a CWM recovery that was supposed to be for this device. Issue was caused by an incorrect recovery.fstab file in the CWM recovery.img. You might try
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
of a known good working recovery before flashing.

[Q] Galaxy SG3 with error message: failed to verify whole-file signature

I see there are others with this issue and aplogize if this question is reduntant.I do not see my build, that being Sprint - Samsung Galaxy S III, SPH-L710 - 4.1.2, Kerneal version 3.0.31-944783.
I am a NOOB or worse (if there is such a thing)
I had rooted used qbking77 you-tube video, via odin, in hopes to run wifi tether, however I never was able to get tethering to work, so I restored to stock.....or so I thought....again via odin and qbking77.
I have since found xda developers, and trust the knowledge and advice found here. I am not confindent in my own ablilties however, I would feel confident in guidance from xda, if someone would be so kind as to point me to the right link for my phone to correct this problem.
I constantly get a message that up-dates are avaiable, when I try to up-date I get the following message:
CWM - based recovery V5.5.0.4
E: Invaild command argument
Finding up date package.....
Opening up date package......
Verifying up date package......
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed

Many thanks to you all for all you do, very impressive!!

Love greeting of
Stefan Harbich
Hello everyone,
shame that still nobody has reported. I have indeed managed to install TWRP v.2.8.0.0, but I have the Android OS 4.2.2 somehow uninstalled when the wipe command. Now I have no OS on my tablet. Well, all for over a week. I just tested a Flash Boot ZIP file to the Android version 4.2.2 Least again, to be able to install on TWRP. Different ZIP's from the XDA developers could not be installed. Either because the zip could not be installed or the possible Ubuntu Toch Version.
I would be very happy if one of you could adopt my problem, because I have not been as conscientiously as you.
Advance for your support and warm Dankf
Kind regards Stefan Harbich
I have the same problem. I've tried to install Ubuntu on Samsung S3 and now in TWRP - whatever I do (install, backup..) - these errors accur
Btw, everything works, but there are about 30 lines of errors like this about missing directories.
Any ideas?
