I've had a 1st gen Moto G for a while and I have up to ~£250 to spend. I was settled on a OPO or an LG G3 (16GB/2GB RAM) since they're both around £240 now. After a bit more reading I think I'd prefer a Zenfone 2, but I'm not sure which models I should go for, or which I can use in the UK.
I usually just buy from Amazon but have noticed a lot of sites I've never seen before offering various models at much cheaper prices, like eglobal central. The confusion comes with the model variants and which is best. I want to make sure I get a model with a 1080p screen, which appears to be the ZE551ML. There appears to be a few different models with sometimes not-so-clear specs. There is this one, but it states a 1.8GHz CPU, which indicates that it's the 2GB RAM model, but states that it's 4GB. Also, this one, that states the same, i.e 1.8GHz with 4GB RAM.
Is there a model with 2.3GHz/4GB RAM with only 16/32GB storage? Is there such a model with 1.8GHz/4GB RAM, or are these sites citing wrong specs? Is it worth the extra money to go for the 2.3GHz model over the 1.8, or 4GB RAM over 2GB? Where is the best place to buy from since the Amazon sellers seem to be charging £70-80 more for the same models as those other smaller sites?
I'm not worried about the storage since 16/32GB is plenty, and the phone allows for a memory card. I'm not really a phone gamer, so I'm not hugely worried about GFX performance. Not really worried about the camera either since I only rarely take pics and almost never video. I just want a 5.5 inch screen with decent specs and the Zenfone seems to offer the best price/spec ratio for me. Provided I can root the phone then I'm happy enough. I can get to custom ROMs later.
Cheers.
FWIW, the one I got has the 1.8 GHz CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. So such a variant definitely does exist. It's the WW (international) version, and came with a UK type plug on the charger.
I have just received the 1.8gh variant with 4g of ram and 32gb storage I bought mine from eglobal for £181 delivery was 3days.

I just ordered the same model (silver) from the same place about 5 minutes ago. For the size/spec it's a steal at that price.
It should be in your hands by Thursday.

You should've got the 4Gb/64Gb model. It uses the Z3580 CPU at 2.3Ghz instead of the Z3560 at 1.8Ghz.
Slightly faster but around 7000 points difference on Antutu (if you are interested in that)...
It also comes with the speedy charger which the 1.8Ghz version doesn't...
They both come with the same speed charger the only difference is in the CPU clock speed and storage amount. Besides with custom kernels you can increase the clock speed.

Well nope, the lower-clocked version is delivered with a plain charger, and only the 2.4 GHz version comes with a Quick Charge one. At least that's the case for the vendors I checked.
And I wouldn't hold my breath for custom kernels, there are none at present.

From some of the video reviews I've seen, they state that the 1.8GHz model (regardless of RAM/storage and including the ZE550ML) all lack the quick-charge charger.

Hey guys
I am considering getting the G3 and theres about £50 difference between 32 and 16gb version, is the 3gb/32gb actually worth it? Seen some tests and the difference was hardly noticable...anybody has any experience with both versions and could compare?
Thanks!
I don't have the link handy but a review was done with both versions, and the benchmarks were nearly the same. With microsd support, I'd see no reason just for another 1gb of ram personally.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Every android phone I've ever had from 256kb to 2gb has eventually needed more memory. More memory means you can run more, cache more and be future proof. If your only keeping the phone for a year, then 2gb will probably be fine, if keeping for 2 years then I would get the 3gb version
Not exactly sure what 50 euros is in usd but if it's any where from 50-100 it's well worth it imo, especially since you get a sdcard & ram upgrade.
2gb ram has been the flagship standard for a while now, my HTC one gets pretty close to full ram usage at some points. More ram guarantees smooth performance for heavy usage as well as future proof specs, and don't forget the g3 has that qhd resolution and once higher (than 1080p) resolution videos become more common you'll be glad you went with the extra ram.
well the 16gb version, not sure what batch is it and where is it imported from(assuming Korea) goes for 1950 PLN = 373.8150 GBP according to google while the 32gb version which is imported from Korea goes for 2250 PLN = 431.3250 GBP so yeah not a big difference but still.
The thing is that I dont really play games on a mobile, most of the time I would just use it for browsing, mail, facebook, gps/maps, apps and camera damn, decisions decisions...

Well i never had the choice... Only 16gb was available in UK. I would defo spend another 50 quid to get extra storage... You're planning to spend a lot of money already so extra 300pln is not that bad isn't?

Personally I would just save the money and buy the 16gb and get a massive SD Card instead. I doubt there is any noticeable difference in performance unless you have a gizillion apps open at the same time. In fact I remember reading an article where an LG employee says the phone is optimised to run on 2GB RAM.
The only reason I can think of to get the 32GB version is if you do not plan on getting an SD Card, then the extra storage is definately worth it. And maybe resale value will be higher...

I think the extra on board storage is, now, very important as, in the up to date google builds, moving app data to sd is very restricted.

Unless you root...
But even so, internal storage is better than SD card for many reason (ease of use, speed)
I picked the 32GB from Germany, very happy I did so.
Get the one with 3gb ram, I can't believe they are still releasing phones with 2gb ram.
I have a Z1 and since I started using a custom launcher whenever I have some apps open and press the home button the homescreen redraws and it's not nearly as quick as before.
Also some apps don't stay cached when I reopen them.
The G3 with its massive resolution should eat even more ram.

I've just read a review here http://pclab.pl/art58419-7.html where they've tested the 2gb version and said it lags a lot, the CPU and GPU gets hot a lot, that it would be better if there was full HD than QHD, that the screen dims weirdly and that the screen gets this weird sharpening effect....
christ I dont know what to do :/ z2 is nice but it has a lot of issues, one's camera isnt good enough these days, g3 3gb is probably most future proof but the more I read about it the more doubts I get...

True, guess it depends on what you use your phone for. I don't do any gaming so the app data space isn't that large.
If the difference in price is ok then it makes sense to get the 32GB I suppose. Here in Singapore, only the 32GB version is available and only S$755 sim-free which is relatively cheap for a new flagship phone.
I'm still deciding whether to get this or the G2 which is only S$520 now!
I'm planning to buy the 32gb version. What I like to know is if the custom roms will be different or will they all be suitable for this version?

Hi,
I have got both phones at the moment (Model D855) and I would strongly suggest you spend the the extra few bucks on tthe 32GB phone. Not as much for the ROM but for the RAM. Today I have installed the same apps on both phobes after rooting them and installing TWRP recovery and the difference is very obvious especially when having several apps open in the background. Although many phones could do perefctly with the amount of RAM the 16 GB model offers, I think there is a difference in this phonbes screen specs. This fabulous screen asks a lot of capacity which I think is the reason the 16 GB version gets very leggy. It's better if you reboot every now and then but I recon you'd get very anoyed at having to do that 3 times a day.
The price difference is big enough to go for the 16 GB version. You'll most prbably regret in a few months.
I have the 2 GB version no problem
Screen is good no heating problems

I have the 16g d855 my phone now runs at 300mb free ram i bought it for 380 euro and the 32gb was for 500+ so the difference was big. So if you have that money go for 32 a test on youtube on benchmarking both versions shows that 32gb is 5-7% faster and the results proofs that.

There are 3 variants of ZE551ML.
1. 4GB RAM with 2.3 GHz Z3580.
2. 4GB RAM with 1.8 GHz Z3560.
3. 2GB RAM with 1.8 GHz Z3560.
The second variant has been released in India. Flipkart is selling this particular model. Not sure about other regions.
Hope this helps.

Yep, the 2.3GHz model USUALLY costs 50-60€ more than the 1.8GHz (4gig) model.

Z3580 has also been released in India and i am using it.. I bought Asus Zenfone 2 (4GB, 2.3Ghz Z3580) from Flipkart only... It is the also mentioned in the Flipkart page (Intel Atom Z3580).... here is the link to the Z3580 phone http://www.flipkart.com/asus-zenfone-2/p/itme6pvuvfsxu5wb?pid=MOBE6PVUTMZSQNHE&ref=L%3A729938417393618866&srno=b_4
Leave it up to ASUS to make it all confusing with 8000 different models of the Zenfone 2. Going to make getting a custom ROM for your specific model a nightmare to figure out.
Several users (myself included) have gotten the 1.8/4GB model from eglobal central (£181). I'm sure there are plenty other sellers of this model. I too was under the impression that you needed to go for the 2.3GHz model to get the extra memory, but no. I didn't want to pay the extra £50-60 for the better CPU so I was glad I stumbled on this middle-of-the-road variant.
To date the 1.8ghz model with 4gb ram is the 551ml model and with 2gb ram is the 550ml model.
the 4gb 1.8ghz model is only available in the 32gb internal storage while the 2.3ghz model is 64gb internal storage.
Seriously though, on Antutu, if this stuff is a must, the 1.8ghz (4gb, cpu 3560) model scores around 40,000 and the 2.3ghz scores around 48,000 due to the better cpu(3580).
I don't see how this would be a nightmare for devs as it seems the roms for the 551ml models is the same....
Mine is 32gb, 4gb ram, 2.3ghz 3580
And guys, couldn't fine a better thread for this but what do you think is the best price/performance model?
How different does 3580 perform against 3560? Do you think it's worth going for 3580?
Or does 4GB make a lot of difference (for 2015, not considering 2016 performance)?
Currently using G3 / 2GB and want a better UI performance and less lag/stutter. Don't care about gaming performance.
Thanks in advance.

I own the Z00AD (32GB ROM, 4GB RAM, Z3560) and it's just fine for me. Gaming performance and multitasking are great! I guess the 4GB RAM is what makes the difference here.
Also the 32GB of storage are no problem either because of the microSD expansion.
I would rather save some money and go for the Z00AD. The software is the same as on the Z00A (64GB, 2.3GHz).

Going by Antutu benchmarks,
3580 with 4gb ram at 2.3ghz = 48000 score.
3560 with 4gb ram at 1.8ghz = 41000 score.
I have both and truthfully the 1.8ghz model is no different in general use.
Up to you if you want the "Best" model out there or not....

Zenfone 2 just got launched in my country but with an insane pricing.
3 versions with 4GB
Z3560 16GB 405$
Z3580 32GB 480$
Z3580 64GB 555$
Or I can get the Chinese version with Z3560 4GB 32GB for 300$ which is of course without any warranty.
Not sure if it's worth to buy Zenfone 2 while I can grab a new G3 for 405$ with warranty.

Thanks for the numbers but I generally ignore benchmarks, especially when real user experience is concerned.
Telling that both CPUs perform almost identical is encouraging though. Can you compare it to any other popular phones?

If you go to youtube there are a heap of comparison videos, usually with flagship devices, which tells you this is a good phone as it's only 1/3 to 1/2 the price.
The reviews are delivered by (mostly) impartial people though they do of course have their favourite devices too....

In Oz I paid $500 for my 64gb 4gb 2.3ghz Zenphone 2 and $350 for the 32gb 4gb ram 1.8ghz Zenfone 2... That's about right....
You need to remember when you pay $00 you are talking US dollars most times and you have to take into account the exchange rate...
I've put G3 price for reference point though. For some reason, Zenfone 2 launched at a fairly higher price compared to other phones/countries.
Most expensive Zenfone 2 is 555$ (USD) compared to 300$ @Amazon. So it's quite un-encouraging to grab it.
And regarding OPO; Turkey is not an official OPO sales country. On top of that, ordering ANY phone is a no-go because if it gets spotted at the customs, it's automatically rejected, no matter what. That's valid for even 100$ Chinese phones.
So we are forced to buy either overpriced official phones or "illegal" ones which are still not cheap (OPO is inbetween 400-450$)

Should be OK as long as its a 551ML model. You should read the Op's post as all the information is there...
how much does it concern you that the 5X may only have 2GB of RAM according to the latest leaks?
If it becomes official will that change your mind about buying this phone?
I would still buy it but having only 2gb of ram but only if the price is right. They can forget about charging $400 for it, the current rumored specs are almost identical performance wise to a nexus 5 and those can be had for $200 used.

It's probably a deal breaker for me... A phone with 2 gb of ram is not future proof.. I would consider the 6p instead, but I hope it doesn't feel huge in the hand...
Otherwise my only hope is that the 2gb is for the lower 16 gb model only, and the 32 gb one has 3gb of ram....

I was reading the op title as "2/3rds of a GB" lol. But seriously, I'm fine with either. I want the typical smooth fluid Nexus experience. However they achieve that, whether 2 or 3 GB of RAM, I'm good with it.
what if it's $349 for 16GB and $399 for a 32GB but both 2gb ram.
is it still worth it?

A bit better yes, but not a whole lot better like the 810.
Well I know for a fact that 2gb is not enough for my usage. To be more specific, when I use something like my car Appradio, and need to run ARUnchained on Bluetooth, with Spotify and Maps, along with casting screen, the phone doesn't last more than 5 mins without either dropping the cast screen, or rebooting.
On the flip side, the OnePlus one, which has just 1gb more Ram holds a very stable screencast, so yea... To each their own, but I'm thinking they will do 16gb with 2gb Ram, or 32gb with 3gb Ram, the same as they did with the LG G3...

I think if the phone turns out to have 2 gigs of RAM, I'd consider the Huawei variant.. I want that 3GB, it IS an upgrade.. Xposed is really ram hungry and I use dozens of modules.. Not to mention so many mods, custom rom w/ CM's theme engine and animation tweaks on my Nexus 5 2013, I normally have just about 235MBs of RAM remaining in average use which makes for a really laggy experience but I still live with it, judge me. So yeah, I want 3GBs of RAM.. I'm leaning towards the Nexus 6P because according to the rumors it does seem like a powerhouse compared to the LG one.. Just hope the development team is as engrossed in the 6P as it might be in the 5X .. I don't know why but something is keeping me from giving a 100% to Huawei.

Could be that the device isn't true 64-bit (an issue which has come up before), and available memory is hitting the 3GB ceiling (happens with Intel-based 32-bit PC's as well, with the ceiling ranging from 3GB to 3.5GB). CPU-Z is just showing a more accurate picture of total RAM (once some overhead is taken out).
More likely, could also be the way settings displays it, for that firmware version. If you are using different firmwares, the readings can be different.
Also, if your friend bought from Amazon as well, and the battery version is different (eg., mine is Z2C3), it could have been a different batch of phones, yet same model (e.g. different seller on Amazon). in that case, it's inconsequential.
What is your phone model number? Mine reads ASUS_Z00AD (I have the 2GB model).
3904mb is near of 4gb.
You hardly (or can't) find a phone that give you exactly RAM amount in spec.
Always below 100-200mb for GPU mem or something.

Nope, just making sure you didn't have the Laser.
Z00A(D) is made up of several variants, varying in CPU Speed (1.8Ghz/2.3Ghz), RAM (2GB/3GB/4GB), and storage (16GB/32GB/64GB, I hear that 128GB also exists).
Based on your CPU-Z (and System settings). you have the 2.3GHz/4GB/64GB model. So enjoy, and don't worry about the settings glitch!

Which is caused by firmware difference or they were looking at a different value in CPU-Z. There is no such thing as RAM manufactured for 3904MB. It's always as powers of 2 (with sometimes a 3 thrown in. e.g. 3072MB - that is 3GB of RAM). The reason you are getting 3904MB and 3GB is because of overhead (e.g GPU). That stuff reserves memory and takes it out of the equation (My old phone has 768MB RAM, but settings always lists 518MB due to hardware and kernel's overhead). Your firmware settings is then glitching and rounding down.
If you use a different firmware version than currently (i.e. same version as your friend), you will get 4GB listed instead. If the situation still concerns you, make sure you are running the latest update.
I'm finding contradicting info for the deluxe special edition sold in USA. ASUS usa webpage alludes that is equipped with z3590, but bunch of other pages say that is with Z3580. Has anybody actually bought the US version? If so, help me with the CPU: is it with Z3590?
According to specs on Amazon it's a z3580

I've mentioned above that i know that; i already looked at Amazon, B&H and NewEgg info and they all mention Z3580 but Asus USA says it has Z3590 (and some Philippines youtubers) , hence why i'm asking someone that has purchased one to help me out. Thanks for chiming in.
ASUS Khang should be able to help you with that, he wirks with US ASUS,for me I have always found Amazon's specs to be pretty accurate, he has a thread here on xda.

Alrighty then, to answer to myself, this US deluxe special edition doesn't come with Z3590, it comes with Z3580. Well, i cannot justify the price of $399 just for bump in storage and some fancy back covers that i do not want. I went to a local Microcenter and there a saw it on the box that the SoC is the same as the regular ZF2.

Not true, There a few versions and the lower end versions come with the Z3560 cpu. I have a couple of Zenfone 2's, both with the Z3560 and the Z3580. Both have 4gb ram but the Z3580 has 64gb memory while the Z3560 only has 32gb...
Major difference is only really when doing benchmarks as daily use you don't really see that much of a performance difference...

Not sure what is not true. Are you saying that ZF2 with 64GB doesn't come with Z3580? If so, then i can tell you that i saw it with my own eyes at Microcenter on the box of the normal 64GB version of the ZF2; if not, then i'm not sure what are you getting at. The 16GB version comes with Z3560, i saw that one at Microcenter too.
I was going to pay $399.00 for the deluxe special edition if it came with Z3590. I know that Z3590 has a bump in burst freq. to 2.5GHz and bump in GPU burst frequency to 640 MHz. How much that translates into real world performance increase i do not know (i hoped for 8-10%); all i cared for that time when i was at Microcenter if the deluxe special edition was with Z3590. If it did have Z3590 i would have bought it, but since it doesn't have that CPU i decided to go for 64GB version with Z3580. 64GB + SD card slot was enough for me, i didn't care for those fancy covers, but unfortunately Microcenter didn't have it in stock (only display model) and i gave up on ZF2.
