You don't have to temp root for Sunshine.
It does it all: temp root, S-0ff, and unlock. All you gotta do is put TWRP recovery on it and you're THERE

Is it possible to do that without unlocking it?
Currently there is no way to unlock/s-off a Verizon HTC phone on lollipop as of yet. Jcase and the sunshine team are working on it, just don't ask for ETA.

M7 got 5.0.2 so are you sure you are on stock m7 software?
Does sunshine have a temp root button to press?

Yea i ment 5.0.2 lol my bad and this is what sunshine comes up with "your device has passed the basic pretest, however it is not rooted. For devices running android 5.0 and up, sunshine requires the device be pre-rooted"

So right now your only option is to find someone with a Java card to meet up with. Until sunshine is updated

I updated to Kit Kat this morning. What are the necessary steps for me to gain root? I haven't rooted a phone since my Droid X, so I might be out of the loop on some things. Thanks for any help!!!
So why would you take the update before asking this
Sent from my HTC One VZW using Tapatalk 4
You can still root it. If you go into RUU mode, flash one of the older system RUU's, then get s-off before updating. You pretty much gave yourself a **** ton more steps to do it, but yes, you can.
This link has the info to flash back to an older version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216&highlight=s-on
You won't need the s-on / lock part of that, but you will probably need to flash one of those old system images, then use rumrunner to get s-off and unlocked, then you can update to 4.4, then flash a recovery.
Use firewater-soff.com. Use the temp root method.

If you are s-on hboot will not allow you to flash an older ruu version than you are currently on (downgrade). So that wont work. But as stated in the post above firewater will get you bootloader unlocked and s-off.

So Firewater can achieve S-off with completely stock kit kat? I ask because I just sent my One to be repaired (4.3 S-off) but I have this feeling HTC will update me and possibly return me to S-on.

It is supposed to work for the newer versions. The worst case scenario is that it won't work.

Thanks, from what I have read in the S-Off thread the temp. root has in fact been blocked so I do not think this will work unless I am reading it wrong.

Weak sauce is for temp root with out unlocking or flashing super su binaries. I didn't want to unlock and only s-off but now i'm unable to. You dont need htcdev for weak sauce but it only works on the Verizon m8.

Correct. Here is exactly what I did in order. Unlocked the bootloader first via HTC Dev. Installed custom recovery and perm root via the HTC Toolkit. Then followed instructions on the Firewater link. Have S-Off, TWRP and Root now.

Did you lose the preload apps from /data/preload ?
I want to get a backup of those before I HTC Dev unlock if possible. I'm looking at the libs in system to see if I can find another one that would work for weaksauce. (I.E. it is just renamed and has the same exports)

Can't find anything that has an export for: "CopyFileCtl" which means no weaksauce on this phone. It looks like HTC Dev Unlock works fine, and so does the firewater s-off but you can't do it without flashing a recovery yet.

Can you confirm if /data/preload is empty after the htc unlock?
Barking up the wrong tree with the library. The same vulnerability exists (from what I have seen) but needs to be exploited in a different route than how the current version of weaksauce is doing it. I didn't build it for compatibility, i built it for easy of testing, as I do not have the device myself.
Dump system, upload it somewhere for me, no promises as I normally don't like to do roots for unlockable phones, but I am interested in finishing the exploit (the one I released is not "finished", as I didn't have the device when I wrote it, just the firmware).

its a extra security measure HTC phones have. the biggest issue with s-on is flashing kernels. with s-on you have to manually flash them using fastboot commands. With s-off you can do other things like flash firmware from other regions or run RRU's from other countrys as well, it would help with sim unlock and changing your model id.

I haven't found anything specific to rooting a 7.0 device, only that SunShine only goes up to 6, so that got me worried. Is it possible to root? How easy is it?

Actually, it's possible. Root doesn't have anything to do with flashing ROMs. Custom recovery is the one that is needed, which in this case is just one fastboot command.

Yes. You can root your device properly. I have an HTC One M9 with s-off too and 7.0. I've used this to root my device:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65741038&postcount=5
This is the one who worked for me. Of course you have to flash first the last TWRP and do a backup. Flash the file in the post with TWRP. Make sure you really be in s-off.
Please do this by your own risk.
