Procedure to change from carrier variant to European/International? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would anyone be so kind as to summarise the procedure or point me in the right direction please?
Basically, I am currently on EE UK variant and have to wait for EE to issue updates. I reckon that will probably slow right down now. What I would like to do is change to an unlocked European or International variant so I can update as soon as HTC release the software.
My limited understanding is I need to:
- root
- s-off
- change ID code
- flash an International/European stock
Is that about right? I like Sense, I like stock. I'm not interested in custom ROM's etc. And I'd also like the ability to use OTA for future updates.
Is this achievable? In a nutshell I want to convert to a different stock.
Many thanks

yes, very easy to do aswell, just a few easy steps if you know how to use adb and fastboot:
unlock your bootloader at HTC dev
flash the latest TWRP recovery
root the phone through TWRP recovery
Run sunshine s-off tool costs $25 (no, theres no free way)
change cid and mid (if required)
flash the firmware for world wide international (WWE)
flash the ruu for world wide international. (WWE)
finished, full stock unbranded, early updates, no more waiting.

Stock ROM & Changing RUU

Hi,
I purchased a new HTC One X from France (I have a friend there), and it came in french and with some apps of SFR (a french cellular company).
I want an official ROM of HTC but without all those apps, and with Hebrew support.
I saw this page with stock ROMs, but how do I know which one is suitable for me?
And can I install a stock ROM that did not come originally with my phone?
I am new to Android and smartphones in general, so please be patient with me (I'm a quick learner though).
Thank you.
Download cidgetter from the play store, that app will let you know your cid. My hox is unbranded with cid 401.
When you know your cid go to the page with the ruus and look for one with your cid in the version number.
Remember though you can only use a ruu with same or higher version number
You can't change region or carrier unless you have an s-off hox
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
OK, my CID is VODAP203. What does it mean?
And what is s-off hox, and how do I get that?
(Simply, all I want to do is to reset my phone to factory's settings but like a not-branded one and with Hebrew support, as if I bought the phone from my country).
Thanks in advance.
ps: is there any detailed guide which explain all those terms and how to install a new ROM and all this stuff...?
Go to this thread

Tell them your cid and some 1 should be able to guide you to the relevent ruu for your cid, that will get you back to stock factory settings.
You can't change cid unless you are lucky enough to have a s-off hox (s-off = security-off) so your best bet if your not bothered about warranty is flashing a custom Rom with all the bloat removed.
Go to this thread for all you need to know about flashing a custom rom

You can only use RUUs from Vodafone France - you can't use a stock ROM unless you go custom

That will get me back to factory settings but it will be exactly like I have it now (mine is brand new), right?
I don't want it like I got it, I want it as if it wasn't branded (like another region).

I don't understand something, I can't use a stock RUU but a custom one I can??
What do I need to do to get an official ROM (General, not branded, like pure HTC official ROM)?
Thanks...
You can't until we gain s-off, that's why if you want rid of all the bloat ware on your phone you will have to go custom rom or root and uninstall the bloatware yourself

I'm going to assume the lest complicated situation, you have a regular HTC One X that is S-ON, but that you've managed to unlock your bootloader and root your phone. From browsing around it seems like the most standard starting point.
I think you are right; it's a little weird that you can only use the RUU (what HTC provides as a stock / factory ROM) from where the phone was intended to be used. I guess this makes some sense: you can manufacture custom configurations of the phone per clients markets (i.e. US Telcos may want two types, a delux version and a stripped down cheaper version) so HTC makes sure to configure the phones differently. If you have different phones, then you need to ensure each works as it should out of the box, so two different ROMs might be required where each stock ROM is optimized for use with the phone configuration as dictated by the CID (does CID - configuration identifier??). So for most of us, the RUU that's available to us is strictly determined by the phone CID.
So why not create a super RUU that is so awesome that it could determine what the physical and software configuration of the phone is and permit only the compatible features? Are HTC developers too lazy?? Maybe, I don't know, I'm not a developer. So enter the custom ROM. A kind of super RUU IMHO that allows for more customization based on the talents of the developer(s) who often design these things for free, on their own time, and although not obligated one bit to support or update them, do so anyway.
So there you have it, you are stuck with the RUU that is compatible only with your CID, or you can research the various custom ROMs that exist and try them out.
Good luck and have fun with it.

[Q] Debrand M9 and get lastest FW

Hi there all,
Have previously done some modding on older HTCs, but have not really done it in a while.
By chance and opportunity, I got my hands on an M9. Love it, but it is Telstra (AU) branded. I know that to get the lastest FW (OEM or otherwise), its best to get off carrier branded FW.
In order to do this (aim to get to intl or Asia unbranded generic FW), I should:
1. S-Off (via HTC Dev).
2. Install custom recovery
3. do a back up (Just in case)
4. Load the generic RUU of my choosing
5. (optional) install the stock recovery that matches the RUU (for OTA updates)
Is this right? Do I need to mess with CID?
Any info to help me refresh myself would be great.
Apparently HTC dev does not assist with S-OFF.. maybe www.theroot.ninja though ..

oh good old sunshine.
Anyone have anything else to add? any tips to make it easier on the m9?
Just that installing a RUU will install stock recovery anyway.
The root ninja guys are in the US and get their M9s in a few weeks, you won't be able to achieve the above until s-off is available, you will need to supercid the device to enable you to flash a none telestra RUU.
A custom ROM may well be an option once they start popping up ?
Thanks Punk/Lee, good insight.
Yeah, I've used Viper ROM ages ago with my M7 i think, and that went well, so may go down custom as well. Cant wait to start mucking around with my M9.
Bootloader unlock reportedly works if you select "other" on HTC dev., also, the process must be done from Recovery Download mode, i. e. Hboot-->Downloadoad mode. At least that's the method I have seen reported successful.
My name is Harold and I'm a flashaholic.....
thanks Harold. I will try it when I get some time this week
Excuse the noobness.
As per above, if I can unlock the bootloader using the "Other" selection on HTC Dev, plus this toolkit is available : http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/tool-windroid-universal-android-toolkit-t3066989
Then, flash one of the following RUUs - http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/htc-one-m9-dump-t3060545
Effectively, that means I can unbrand (use one of the stock RUUs), and it would receive the relevant updates from those regions, yes?

If that RUU, what you want to flash, has different CID/MID - flashing will fail..
And on the other hand for editing your CID/MID in order to match those in RUU can't be accomplished without S-OFF - which you should not confuse with "unlocking bootloader"..
hey, I managed to debrand my M9. I followed these steps:
1. unlock bootloader
2. flash recovery and root
3. S-Off with sunshine
4. Change my CID to HTC__001
5. Put the 0PJAIMG.zip on an SD card and rebooted into bootloader mode and it de-branded the phone

which update rom should i use?

I have an unlocked at&t htc one m9, I bought it locked to the at&t network then unlocked it.
I'am looking to update the phone using the official rom from htc but am unsure on what one to use - the one for the at&t version of the phone or the one for unlocked/developer phones?
thanks in advance
Unless you're S-OFF, you can only use updates from your carrier.
If you get your phone to S-OFF state, you can change the CID. This will allow you to flash other updates (like the developer version update - often released well before any carrier update).
The downside is that with S-OFF, it is much easier to brick (as in hard-brick - never coming back) your phone. Always good to read and re-read instructions and ask questions before flashing.

I can't help you there, sorry. Check around the forums - the 'sticky' threads will probably get you going in the right direction.
I assume you mean carrier unlocked, not bootloader unlocked. Obviously you haven't converted your device, in which case, you should only flash official AT&T software.
I got the Developer Edition and the only difference between the AT&T M9 and the Developer Edition is
AT&T M9 has AT&T apps and bloat ware, and last to get any ota updates.
Developer Edition no carrier apps or bloat ware and first to get ota updates.
If u don't use or care for all the AT&T apps and want ota updates soon as they drop then go ahead and convert your AT&T M9 to the Developer Edition.

Other option is the 1st answer in this thread, once S-Off you can roll back to stock if necessary.

Marshmallow Update

whats up guys?
Im a little confused on this update process. i have an ATT M9 that i converted to dev edition. with the new marshmallow update rolling out, its only going to the unlocked version. when i check the HTC website, it says that the dev edition is only in stage 1 while the unlocked and ATT versions are in stage 3. what should i do to get the update asap? keep the dev edition, or convert to unlocked/ATT version? How would i convert to the unlocked edition without an official RUU from HTC?
you already have the answer, anyways ill paste it here for anybody else..:
1.unlock bootloader from htc.dev
2.root twrp 2.8.7.1-beta / SuperSU 2.52
3.S-Off sunshine $25 USD
4.Change CID to Super CID 11111111 MID to 0PJA10000 (international=unlocked).
5.Flash latest ZIP Ruu through SD Card Method
6.This will give you stock WWE UNLOCKED, do not flash any custom recovery or anything else, twrp will be ereased, no more root, stay stock!
7.OTA until you get 2.10 firmware (STOCK).
8.Be Ready for MM! OTA =D
Unlocked generally is WWE Edition, unlocked phones from USA are rarely seen, but you can tottally be sure this is the option, there are only 2 (unlocked) FIRMWARES Dev (current 2.11) and WWE (2.10).

rite, but the update says USA only as of now which means the WWE edition wont be receiving it first. no?
i got a fail to update due to custom software detected on device, relocked bootloader to see if that fixes anything......
I just updated my HTC One M9 unlocked edition and it's a shame there's no System UI Tuner available (kind of expected this though). The quick settings is still same looking; I wished it looked more like stock LOL. Other than that, I'm happy about the permissions; no more location services for a ton of apps . It seems to be much smoother, especially when you flick the apps away from the recent apps drawer.

Hi, and sorry for the inconvenience but my phone is not rooted or anything, I have just kept it stock. No mods, no custom recovery, nothing unfortunately. I would have definitely provided the XDA community with one if it was rooted/had a custom recovery. Sorry man!

HTC 10 Bell

Hi guys, I got the HTC 10 bell variant at a good price and since is my back up phone I'm trying to put it to the test to change it from bell variant to the US variant, I was reading a lot of threads but im confused, , I unlocked the bootloader, I instaled the twrp, now how do i change the CID ??mine shows 666, and I want to change it to 617 , do I have to have S-OFF?? or I can do that with S-ON since the Bootloader is unlocked , will I get the OTA updates for the 617 after i change it?? (btw i dont want to chage it to 401 international because im afraid i will loose the band 4 LTE )
I'm with bell and changed to us unlocked. There might be a way to do it without s-off like maybe super cid. But to install ruu.exe you need s-off. You will get ota but to apply all you need is to reinstall stock recovery.
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
You can't change your CID and flash the Unlocked version without S-OFF.
Thanks guys for your replays ,btw nitramus can u pls add a step by step how I did it??I'm new with the HTC
Since you're at the cid part just look for the thread for changing cid and flash ruu. And look at the thread with all the backups for all the versions or stock rom. You will have all you need, latest available rom with ota. To prevent any problems as soon as your phone is ready to use after ruu and you logged in to you account apply ota right away, then flash supersu and have fun.

Yes to convert your phone to U.S Unlocked you'd have to S-off to be able to change your CID. You gotta pony up the 25 USD, which is worth it in my opinion if you're gonna use the 10 as your main phone and tinker with it for a year or two.
Basically follow the steps from this guide, and when it comes to flashing an RUU use the Unlocked one you can download directly from HTC.com
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/guide-how-to-drand-convert-htc-10-to-t3374593
BTW it's very fitting that Bell's CID is 666

OK did that so I have S-off, I changed the CID on the cmd , and than I flashed with RUU_PERFUME_WL_M60_SENSE80GP_NA_Gen_Unlock_1.53.617.5 than update to the latest ones that they pop up to update, nice Thank you ,btw if i want to change S-on will impact the updates or should i keep it S-off??
Personally I don't bother to change back but if security is important for you then maybe. Later depending if you want to change things again depending on what you do you might still need s-off.

If you are rooted and/or have a custom recovery, you can't use the official OTAs. You'll need the stock and never rooted ROM (it has to have an unmodified system partition), and also the stock recovery to flash it.
The easiest (and often quicker way than waiting for an official OTA) is to just flash a firmware.zip package in either fastboot or by the rename/SD card method.
I recommend the ones on this thread. You can find both Full Stock .zips there, that will wipe your phone (because they contain the boot.img), and No-Wipe .zips that won't wipe your phone (obviously) as they have the boot.img (kernel and ramdisk) removed, and also contain the latest TWRP recovery versions instead of the stock recovery.

To add regarding future OTA updates, if you want them directly from HTC you'll also have to remove SuperCID, if you have it. Just having a stock/unmodified system and recovery isn't enough.
And I agree, just keep S-off unless you're making a warranty claim.
