[Q] Questions on rooting, recovery and ROM's (ex-Samsung user)

OK. I'm a little bit lost in the HTC world!
I've had a Samsung Galaxy Note II for the last year and have just replaced it with the HTC ONE (M8). I found the whole rooting and ROM procedure relatively straight forward with the Note II. In a nutshell you:
1) Rooted with a Windows based application
2) Installed / Flashed a recovery system
3) Flashed a custom ROM using a Windows based application called ODIN
And that was that. Pretty straightforward. Having had a nose around the HTC forum it's awash with clever folk using abbreviations and acronyms like CID, RUU and S-OFF...!
My M8 is on EE network in the UK which I know is CID ORANG001. What I would like though is to convert my M8 to a generic European M8 so I can receive the latest HTC updates rather then await EE to push out their version. This therefore prompts me to ask the following questions:
1) Is this something we will be able to achieve?
2) What is the (potential) process to achieve this (assuming something similar for the M7 already exists)?
2) Will over the air updates work?
I've read numerous posts which seem contradicting. Some talk about a simple change of the CID others mention S-OFF as the GOD of everything related to the subject. If I were to guess, changing the CID seems too simple, but I'm guessing once changed to a generic EU CID it's possible to receive HTC's OTA updates? Or am I wrong there? Or having another guess I would assume I'd need to go down the lines similar to Samsung process of rooting or S-OFF (security off?) and flashing a generic stock EU ROM?
So what CAN currently be achieved and what CAN'T currently be achieved?
I guess I could do with a little background on these processes and the terminology used.
Any help, greatly appreciated.

Can :
Unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery to install a custom rom based on the latest firmware. You are depending on rom updates from the dev if he updates it to the latest software/firmware
Can't :
S-off
Change cid
Get ota via another rom
Run a ruu because they are simply not available
So to receive ota you need your original stock rom. And before you start messing around please make a stock nandroid backup and store it !

Also not familiar anymore with HTC. After reading and reading and still not finding the exact answers to my questions, so I simply (after unlocking and flash TWRP recovery and backing up) tried to flash Virtuous ROM (1.54.401.5) over my German o2 device (1.12.206.17, CID O2___001). Everything worked except WiFi, so I tried a last call with mikes ARHD Rom 3.1, before going back to stock. And this ROM works brilliantly!
But I would also be happy if the OP questions could be answered...

1. the WiFi problem discribed above could be firmware related?
2. When my Provider o2 brings out an update with firmware, can I simply relock bootloader and push the (perhaps) available firmware.zip it to the device via fastboot like mike explains in his firmware thread?

Well that would be weird as both roms the OP flashed are based on 1.54.401 so i would say no.....

OK thanks. Few more questions if I may.
So from the "can't" list, IF we can get the ability to change CID and have S-OFF in the future, would it provide the ability to receive OTA updates when HTC push them out, or are OTA updates simply out of the game entirely?

Yes that should be possible , all you need then is
Changed cid
Stock rom
Stock kernel
Stock recovery
Or the ruu (if available)
Then the phone is ready for ota updates.

A ruu is a Rom Update Utility and it contains the rom, kernel, firmware, recovery (and some more stuff). When a ruu is installed its like the phone is factory stock.

[Q] HTc One M8t (China) root and HTC Sense original?

Hi XDA
Im lost! I bought the HTC One M8t in China today, in a real store, so its not a fake. Im on vacation in China and come from Denmark.
I belived it would just be plug'n'play with this phone, but since its bought in china there is a lot of chinese apps and no Play store
I asked around and i realised i will have to root the phone. Im a totel rookie and i have never done it before, so i hope you guys can lead me in the right direction.
Questions:
1. How do i root my HTC One M8t?
2. Can i get the original HTC Sense from my region (Denmark/Europe) on my phone?
2.1 If yes, how do i do that?
2.2 If no, can i get Android L on my phone?
I really hope someone can help me, i am totally lost and really frustrated since i thought it would be an easy task to get it up and running.

I've been reading up on this topic because I've just landed myself in the same situation.
So, I managed to root my M8t but I haven't managed to flash another ROM (like your Danish one) to it yet. The reason for this is because I can't get rid of the S-ON on the phone which stops you from installing custom ROMs. To my knowledge, although I'm still searching, there isn't a way yet.
The slightly good news is that you can put a ROM that was designed specifically for the M8t on it but I haven't managed to find one with Google Play etc. yet.
So in conclusion, you can root your phone but you can't put anything useful on it yet (that I know of).
I hope I've cleared things up a little and if you'd like an explanation on how to root the M8t I'd be happy to tell you, just let me know. :good:

If you already managed to root (meaning you obtained bootloader unlock and custom recovery) you could try to s-off with firewater. If firewater doesn't work for your M8 you can try sunshine s-off, as I did.

To obtain root you have to unlock bootloader (e.g. via htcdev.com) and install a custom recover (my personal choice was TWRP). After this you can flash root with your "new" recovery.
After this you have to s-off your device (see my answer above).
If you ar finally s-off you can download a stock HTC backup of the European (WWE) ROM as well as the fitting firmware.
Next step would be to perform a TWRP backup of your device and place the above mentioned ROM backup in your TWRP/Backup/H..../ folder on your HTC One M8 and rebooting back into recovery.
In recovery you can now backup to your dowloaded stock ROM and again reboot to bootloader.
The last two steps are to change the CID to a European (WWE) one (e.g. HTC__102) and after this flashing the firmware in RUU mode.
For a more detailed guide just search on this forums, or simply ask your questions. I'll try to help as good as passible. Remenber I'm not to blame for a brick of your smartphones, should something go wrong during one of the steps.

Recovery - You need a special custom recovery for the M8t, I used this one:

S-OFF - That method works for most version of the M8 but not he M8t, (though I didn't try sunshine).
I've managed to get Google play using Soul 2.0 which was made especiall for the M8t

For the M8t, there is a easier way for Google Play service (gmail, map... etc),
Just search "GMS安装器" from HTC App store or Baidu App store. Then you are good to go.
As for the ROM, yeah... I am hoping to find some idiot step-by-step tutorial to teach me how to do so. Wonder if any kernal or recovery or rom on the forum can be used on HTC One M8t? Also the phone is using TD-SCDMA and TDD-LTE, are those firmware or rom designed specifically for the hardware of FDD-LTE and WCDMA?

[Q] Back to full stock with s-on

Hi guys,
need your help.
I have Europe M9, with S-ON.
Rooted it, and installed TWRP, installed custom rom.
How to revert it to full stock? I have sold the phone, and now buyer wants it back to way it were.

Thankfully it's pretty easy; just download your carrier specific RUU to restore to full stock. It's a Windows executable that completely wipes & return your phone to factory state.

I have bought it in Telenor Serbia it was on 1.32.401.15. Should I use any Europe RUU, or do I need to find one exact to match my carrier, and-or my firmware version?
sorry if being noob, but cannot understand this HTC's nonsense (s-on/s-off, cid, hboot...) thats the exact reason why I have sold it. to complicated for me...
I just want it up and running, and trust me, I will never EVER buy another HTC again.

Since there are two different versions of your firmware and I don't know which one is the correct one for you I would suggest you to use this firmware and downgrade to 1.32.401.8. This works because the aboot has not been updated until now. The process itself is very easy:
Download the RUU
Rename it to 0PJAIMG.zip (that's a zero at the beginning not an O)
Copy the file on an external SD card that is formatted to fat32 and not bigger than 32 gb
Boot into download mode
Follow the instructions that are shown on your M9's screen
Congratulation you are now back on stock rom and firmware
You have to use either this way or the fastboot flashing method since there are no RUU executables for the european version.
Btw: No one here forced you to buy the M9. Since it's simply a matter of taste it's up to you which device you choose. I personally prefer HTC's user friendliness in regard to bootloader unlock and rooting (compare it for example with Samsung's Knox system). But this is not the right place for that debate.
Edit: Since my phone is S-OFF I'm not completely sure but you might have to relock your bootloader or step 5 might no work properly.

I have the same problem, i wanna know how to restore it to full stock, i need it just in case something happens to phone and i need to use my waranty. I'm also on telenor serbia. Any detailed instructions would be much appreciated. And one more thing, will i be able to recevie OTA updates even though its rooted ?

Root by itself doesn't prevent OTAs, but changes to the recovery do. As far as I know, acquiring root (for this device) always involves flashing a custom recovery. So OTA aren't possible until the stock recovery is restored.

Do I need to have sd card, or can I flash it from pc using adb?
I have already tried this method, and fastboot gave me an error 22? Maybe I got wrong firmware. Will try again, thanks.

As far as I know, there is only one. Search in forums.

If you are S-ON you can only flash a RUU for your carrier and device. If that's the correct RUU for your phone, it will do it.

The question is where can you find correct RUU from specific carrier

So if you're an European open you can't really flash without s off?

There is a RUU list in the General forum. Not all configurations have RUUs, unfortunately, as it has always been with HTC.

By far the easiest way for the inexperienced is to use the windows exe version linked to a few posts ago .
If you're on 1.32.401.15 then simply flash 1.32.401.17 using the exe version. Simply run windows program and follow on screen prompts .
Main limitation if you're S on is it will only allow upgrade that is to go to higher number as described .
I think there is also a 1.32.401.8 exe but that's an earlier version so if you tried to use that and you were on higher version such as 1.32.401.15 then it wouldn't allow unless you had obtained S off.

One more thing, i received lates OTA update, but it wont instal because recovery isnt stock. I found stock signed, when i flash it will the phone factory reset or not ?

Flash T-Mobile M8 to AT&T - steps

I found a few threads on this but nothing recent. I have a SIM unlocked T-Mobile M8 that is currently stock (unrooted, S-ON) that I would like to reflash to AT&T stock. My understanding is that the AT&T and T-Mobile hardware variants are identical, they just use different radio firmwares.
I think I have a pretty good idea of what to do, but I haven't messed with rooting in the last couple years so I'm really just looking for some validation here.
Steps:
1. HTCDev unlock
2. Root
3. Sunshine S-OFF
4. Relock bootloader
5. Flash M8 AT&T RUU (I'm assuming this resets the phone to S-ON)
6. Repeat steps 1-3(?)
7. ?
8. Profit
Anyone see anything wrong with this? Thanks in advance.

Step 5...No. once you have S-Off , it stays S off

I ended up doing this yesterday. Forgot to add the steps for changing the CID and MID before flashing the RUU, and I didn't have to relock the bootloader before the RUU.
FWIW, there is a flashable zip out there that purports to change the MID for the M7 and M8, but it didn't work for me. I had to use the adb shell method.
Lastly, I'm pretty sure that the M8 RUU linked in the AT&T section of the main HTC ROM downloads page is actually an M9 RUU. I had to go to the M8 page and download it from there. Not sure if the RUU would've let me install it anyway, but that was a close call.

HTC 10 Bell

Hi guys, I got the HTC 10 bell variant at a good price and since is my back up phone I'm trying to put it to the test to change it from bell variant to the US variant, I was reading a lot of threads but im confused, , I unlocked the bootloader, I instaled the twrp, now how do i change the CID ??mine shows 666, and I want to change it to 617 , do I have to have S-OFF?? or I can do that with S-ON since the Bootloader is unlocked , will I get the OTA updates for the 617 after i change it?? (btw i dont want to chage it to 401 international because im afraid i will loose the band 4 LTE )

I'm with bell and changed to us unlocked. There might be a way to do it without s-off like maybe super cid. But to install ruu.exe you need s-off. You will get ota but to apply all you need is to reinstall stock recovery.

You can't change your CID and flash the Unlocked version without S-OFF.

Since you're at the cid part just look for the thread for changing cid and flash ruu. And look at the thread with all the backups for all the versions or stock rom. You will have all you need, latest available rom with ota. To prevent any problems as soon as your phone is ready to use after ruu and you logged in to you account apply ota right away, then flash supersu and have fun.

Yes to convert your phone to U.S Unlocked you'd have to S-off to be able to change your CID. You gotta pony up the 25 USD, which is worth it in my opinion if you're gonna use the 10 as your main phone and tinker with it for a year or two.
Basically follow the steps from this guide, and when it comes to flashing an RUU use the Unlocked one you can download directly from HTC.com

Personally I don't bother to change back but if security is important for you then maybe. Later depending if you want to change things again depending on what you do you might still need s-off.

If you are rooted and/or have a custom recovery, you can't use the official OTAs. You'll need the stock and never rooted ROM (it has to have an unmodified system partition), and also the stock recovery to flash it.
The easiest (and often quicker way than waiting for an official OTA) is to just flash a firmware.zip package in either fastboot or by the rename/SD card method.
I recommend the ones on this thread. You can find both Full Stock .zips there, that will wipe your phone (because they contain the boot.img), and No-Wipe .zips that won't wipe your phone (obviously) as they have the boot.img (kernel and ramdisk) removed, and also contain the latest TWRP recovery versions instead of the stock recovery.

To add regarding future OTA updates, if you want them directly from HTC you'll also have to remove SuperCID, if you have it. Just having a stock/unmodified system and recovery isn't enough.
And I agree, just keep S-off unless you're making a warranty claim.

I was hoping someone might have the official stock firmware including recovery, from bell? I have to send my phone in for warranty repair. I have my stock system backed up and am on firmware 121.666... I have s-off and boot loader locked status. I have super cid 11111111. Any help will be reciprocated. Thank you for any help.

Hey, did you get this figured out?
I have a stock backup in my recovery, might work. Might not lol..
Was thinking of going US since Bell still has not pushed an update out..
