[Q] Update to Lollipop 5.x - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've come across various online articles about Verizon updating Note 4 to Android 5.0.1. Is that an over the air update because I just checked Verizon's website and they are selling Note 4 retail model with Android 4.4. KitKat. If anyone living in Texas, US can confirm if they've received an update, I'd appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure everywhere has now received the lollipop update for the retail version.
It was rolled out a good bit ago now. And yes, it's an over the air update. It comes in 2 parts.

Any probs since the update?

Do you know of any probs since the update? Any pointers/tips to a new android user?

Some have noticed/complained of a decrease in battery life. I have not had any issues with it. It did go down a little bit, but nothing that I find an issue. I was getting upto 7 hours screen on time on 4.4.4 and now I'm getting around 6 or so on 5.0.1.
Both are using the power saving mode.
I have however noticed that I seem to have some stumbles or lag in power saving mode on 5.0.1. I didn't have them in 4.4.4, but they are few and far between so it doesn't bother me.

In my opinion kitkat was more efficient or atleast for now but if you want something similar to lollipop try nova launcher. My batter drains much quicker than it used to and this is annoying.

This sounds painful. Wasn't Project Volta supposed to improve battery life?

Note 4 android L

Anyone heard anything about the note 4 getting the android L update?
This is all hypothetical but should be soon, they have been releasing build videos on their youtube channel with progress on the S4, S5 etc. The Moto X and G3 I think just got the update and I'd imagine Samsung is hot on their tail. Lets hope soon!
I read early 2015
No phone has received Lollipop yet, except the Nexus 6 - previews of it are popping up on different devices (G3, MotoX, S5, etc) - they haven't been released to the public yet - I would expect that they need more time to test the software.

Select 2014 Moto X users who are signed up as soak testers for Motorola have received a test build of Android L. It's not publicly available to all. Like BizzLeonDaCouch said, previews are popping up in places, but as of today, no phone outside of the Nexus 6 officially has a final, public version of it.
I think we should see it Q2 of 2015.

Odd thing is samsung has sent teaser pics out of a note 4 with lolipop.
You would think that in doin that they would'nt be getting it to is soon.
But then again, between them and suckrizon, ya never know

suckrizon is both difficult, and easy to say.
You know we'll get 5.0. You also know Verizon will be among the last, and it'll be everywhere by then.
When i had s4 verizon pushed 4.3 i think quickly due to galaxy gear watch and lolipop seems important update all phone makers are jumping onto updating the phones.
I think it might be much quicker maybe by end of year.

I agree that Verizon's overall track record has been horrible with timely updates, but over the past year, they've released updates to some of the latest flagships much quicker than in the past. For instance, the Verizon S5 was one of the first anywhere to get an update to 4.4.4, even before the unlocked international version.
OS updates are the same as always...a couple of months after then International device gets it depending on carrier. So watch the International Note 4 forum for when they start getting OTA and then you know you only have a few months to wait.

Couple quick 5.0 questions

When are we expecting this to drop for our device? Ready for our device to be more snappy as my old n5 with 5.0 is much faster than my Note 4.
Is there going to be an development for this device in time? I know it is tough for some Devs to get their hands on these phones so I didn't know if that was why there is basically nothing, or if there is some other reason.

I haven't been keeping up with Lolipop release dates or anything so I couldn't say when that will come out. But I look forward to it... I hope. LOL
There's several reasons for the lack of dev's for our Sprint Note 4 and that has been discussed already here in the forum. The speed difference between the Note 4 and the Nexus 5 could very well be due to the lack of software overlay and features on the Nexus device compared to the Note 4 which leaves plenty of processing/memory resources available to run a much lighter software. This is a given. But in reality I don't see much any lag on the Note 4 so I'm perfectly fine with it. I would literally get depressed and panic if I had a vanilla Nexus device because I've come to love all the features and advantages of the Note series phones. It's a good thing we have a choice in the Android world!

My guess is middle of february.
So outside of the material design language and project Volta (think I got that right), what else are we missing from 5.0?
IMO...feels like another push just to get the latest version of Android but due to TW, I don't think we'll see much difference.
Judging from what I have seen on my old n5 as far as the difference in responsiveness and snappiness, this will be a huge update, TW or not. 5.0 is about twice as smooth as 4.4.4 on my n5.
Fair. I was rocking the developer preview on my N5 before I got rid of it.
Just as others have said, Ive read the same on sam mobile early 2015.
and by then Google will announce Android 5.5 Lolita

[Q] Android L Samsung Note 4 - Dissapointed

I'm sorry, but I think some of you can agree with me on this. I will ask a question at the end, but for now, just... Samsung. So we hear that Android L is READY for thesince 4 but the carriers haven't decided to release it, even though the LG G3 just got the update...
Then, I hear that Samsung has the update ready and "done" for the S5 and Note 3. But no Note 4?...
And THEN I hear that Samsung is STILL working on the coding for Android L for the note 4! Best part, Samsung does not do a SINGLE thing to announce to its viewers what there doing for Android L, there just going off on there own little path doing what they want. The S6 Is coming out soon, why would update the S5 first then the note. Note users just got this phone, because it came out in October.
Honestly, I don't know about you guys but I feel completely put off and disrespected. I mean really, they have ZERO announcements for Android L and YET they update other phones before there Note 4 which just came out.
I've been waiting eager for this update since December, and nothing. People said soon in January, and nothing. And I was eager for the end of February. Nothing. This is getting to a point where I feel like users are going to start become irritated with this company.
So do you guys have any concrete evidence that gives a hint towards the update? I apologize for my rant, but all of its true and a lot of people I know who own the note 4 are just as fed up as me :/
I won't defend or make apologies or gripe about the delay. There was a rumor that the Oculus/Samsung Gear VR kernel developers were holding up the release of Note Lollipop. My guess is that were tweaking trying to resolve crashes and heating issues.
I also hear rumors of streamlining the update process but you also have carrier bloat and Google releasing Lollipop later. I do hope the bloat is reduced on all the aspects but I also want my S-Pen to function.
Now I will complain about the following:
KitKat was not so perfect for Google or Samsung. I didn't like the limitations on sdcard media or inability to follow links or the attempts to run apps within apps and hose the proper back and recent app jumping. There were fixes for that use Xposed framework modules. At any rate, if lollipop is more if the same, I'm in no rush to jump to lollipop without Xposed fixes for Samsung devices.
I hope Samsung listens and doesn't keep caving to Google's will like they did with the menu button. I'd hoped they would have continued the option to keep menu or recents like they initially did with the s5. I looked closely at the s5 when it came out and there was a lot to like. I checked the menu/recents swap feature and walked away confident that Samsung did a good thing pleasing all with the swapability and black background in menus but I heard that went away with updates so I'm not so encouraged going forward without without Xposed. Please ban the white background themes already.
I have a Note 8 on 4.4.2 and this on 4.4.4 which forced me to use Xposed to switch the menu and home buttons back to the classic Samsung way on the Note 4. Can't understand why Google thinks recents key is so great when you could just program a long press to switch back and forth between the two most recent apps. Oh yeah, they broke that too, meaning I have to install two Xposed modules to fix that; I did. Shame on you Google; shake on you Samsung for following after trying not change.
Edit: Just a little off topic but just watched the s6 unpack and I'm not liking the departure from removable battery. It's good that they didn't forget about fast charging with the move to wireless charging built-in but the glass back? Fingerprints? LOL! Apart from the best Amoled screen, 14nm processor, faster/efficient and cutting edge camera, Samsung is losing some of it's uniqueness and character. Admittedly, I rarely remove my battery or rear cover with the battery lasting all day. May take some getting used to the idea but I was hoping the rear cover would be removable and battery pull and replace still a user option. Fixed memory options wouldn't be bad if the price doesn't bite. Faster memory without the permission restrictions limiting apps and read write workarounds would be gone. Maybe it's only the one percent that really cares about the chassis changes and the components and specs will offset?

Im not in any hurry for the OTA 5.0 . I use the Hybrid-X rom and it works much smother than the stock rom did, waaay tooo many bugs in the stock rom that was delivered with the Note 4 (at least the sprint version). I have Lolipop on my Nexus 7 but do not see what all the hype is about, no major pluses or upgrades for what I use my devices for. I can wait for Lolipop to show up then get turned into an even better rom!

Lg g4 6.0.1 marshmallow update???

When we will get 6.0.1 update with battery and optimization fixes ????? Im tired of waiting LG ....
Get a nexus and stop waiting.
I'm tired of a top LG phone line and full of contempt , this year will move to Samsung , to the S6 has received update with the new S7 interface. goodbye LG
As a long time Samsung user I can tell you that moving to Samsung for faster updates is not a bright idea. Get a nexus. Samsung is the worst at updating it's phones and tablets.
Sent from my LG-H818 using Tapatalk
Yea LG is way faster then Samsung. By the way LG released M way before Samsung. Most S6 devices still don't have it.
Pretty sure we already have 6.0.1, LG just labeles it as 6.0 as they did with 5.1 i stead of 5.1.1. Correct me if I am wrong.
By the way Doze will not help much with you battery life. It's a deap sleep when you don't use your device. The G4 already only uses a few % when idle in 24h.

Regarding Samsung uppdate policy...there are samsung and... samsung phones. According to my experience flagships like S and Note line (i mean unlocked international and not locked carrier variants or other S Plus hybrids etc) get updates pretty quick. Unfortunately it doesn't look that good in case of other other flagship units. When it comes to middle range devices or regional releases... well it's a disaster zone!
Sent from my LG-H815 using XDA-Developers mobile app
If you can see closely most of minor updates only fixes stuff for the aosp if some fixes are for the general OS OEMS and LG at least took them but still label their version with the major number.
Samsung that your saying is better give the S6 MM 2-3 days ago while LG G4 and G3 have MM from December last year.

Sammy has a couple of tricks they use. They throttle some to save battery. They also have an apps optimisation feature where if an app has not been used for say 3-5 days you decide when, it then ensures that it never runs in the background. Kinda like greenify without root just implemented in the firmware. Won't work with system apps so no way to optimise google play services.
Still, combine these two with doze and people with s6 are not complaining about battery any longer.

My wife has the s6 edge. The battery life is not any better then the G4 it's mostly worse. Again the deep sleep/doze only really helps standby which means crap for heavy users. Great for very light users though.
Not sure what they have in their software but it does not really show in real world use.

S6 should do better than the G4 but only with wifi. Its worse with data and mixed use.
max did a youtube test with the S6 last April, S6 lasted 5h15 before. he did the same recently and it lasted 6h30.
So there is some improvement with MM or something.
the optimisations keep other apps that have not been used from starting and saving drain. This helps cut down unnecessary drain and helps with SOT. Look under battery - app power saving. have you tried it ?
Doze only helps when its sat stationary and sensors indicate no movement.
I guess because LG is full steam ahead with the g5 right now.
The g4 is now second best and no need to rush updates out (except in Turkey)
6p is really tempting ... But I really really like the g4 cameras... Both front and back

I've readins the comments and can't avoid writing when I saw some guys was saying Samsung was the brand who update faster their Android devices LOL that cannot be more wrong.
From my experience of all brand I've using even some less-famous as Lanix and Alcatel, the fastest brands are Motorola and LG, eventually all flagships gets updated but regardless the Nexus devices will always be the best option in terms of SO updates.

You probably will be equally mad in a different aspect of the phone, ie Samsung's abismal quality control. This phone while I hate it with all my passion is unfortunately a lot higher quality than any Samsung to date. However being stuck of whatever the h***** they think google software should be like just outweighs it and I want rid of this phone more than anything too. I wish Asus would come out with a high end version of their ZenFone instead of making the budget versions all the time. I have one that got damaged and it was the best phone I ever had. I would have gotten another but had no $$$ and go this G4 on my Koodo tab thinking how bad can it be?

This is wrong, they improved it. All you have to do is disable the logd process, which drains your battery like nothing else (or better use a proper kernel).

Exactly. I bought it recently and am happy with it. 4 hours of SOT and 20 hours of use.
But on three occasions the screen has done weird things. Once I had the notification LED flash but I fixed it by toggling a WiFi setting off and on.
I thought I was in the clear because it's a 602 model. Apparently not. I don't want to return and am itching to unlock that bootloader but afraid I need to test it for longer.

Buying a smartphone made by LG is a big big mistake.
G4 is my last LG smartphone forever.
I'm also sure in 100% that we will hear about some sort of "sudden death" is G5 as we heard it about G4 and the G3.
And don't forget that most of the countries haven't got Marshmallow for G3.. Sad, isn't it?
And one last thing - G5 suffers from poor battery life and bad performance compare to Galaxy S7 (with Snapdragon 820)

Best choice last year. Given the price its going for now, it still remains an excellent choice.
Battery is about management. You compare a sealed battery to replaceable ? how did you do that. Need more battery use a second. Don't have this battery pack attached to it.
After one year how long will battery last on S7 with all this fancy quick charge. You do use your phone for more than one year yes ? No problems with an LG.
This thread reminds me of sammy users whining how they did not get MM when we got it a couple of months earlier. Big deal. They finally got it, their battery improved and now they are quiet.
So now LG users are crying they did not get any more update. Such BS!
I like to be 6 months behind latest update. All apps work better this way as app developers had time to fix bugs and update. Everything more stable. No surprises. Use the phone, don't spend half your life trying to figure out why its not working right.
On 20f and everything fine, how do you disable logd? And what does it do?

I had G3 for almost a year and a half and now I have G4 for almost a year. You can't compare ~9 hours of screen on time in the S7 against ~5 hours of screen on time in the G5.
You do right about the quick charge, but G5 has the same quick charge technology which means the battery life is short on the G5 also.
I have second battery and charging kit which I never used because who wants to carry around everywhere a battery?
9 hours? 5 hours? Where did you find this numbers?
Stay Classy San Diego
So guys its not about numbers its about expectation. Take me as a consumer. I buy a flagship device a premium device for a premium Price. So i want the phone to hold long and get updated like promised and get bugfixed if bugs appear. Its not like.u buying a cheap phone. There are people like me who paid 699€ for this phone. I got it right at the start. And to be fair ll was great and mm is the opposite. And they dont do anything against weird battery drain logd and heating. Instead people who never heard of xda(like me) have to search and read several threads on how to dosabling it. If u pay a high price, then u want a flawless running device. We did not get that and thats the reason why this is my last lg device. Samsung did evrything right So htc does atm and i am even considering to ditch over to apple...
