[Q] Drawing and updating own map - Design, Prototyping, UI, Graphics

Hi my project is indoor locating using Bluetooth signal. The developed app will update location based on the beacon signal detected.
My problem is I plan to show the location on my phone in the form of map . However I duno which way should I use to draw out the map(random map as long as the concept is being proven). I am using android studio by the way.

Hi,
One year now from your message. I am wondering if I could find a solution as I am facing the same problem.
Any info would be nice
thanks

Map4Pda working on the Artemis - free GPS/Map software

For those who dont have any sat nav software or if you roam around the world - Map 4 PDA is excellent and its free!
You can choose map provider - google maps, yahoo maps, virtual earth or ask.com maps and it has satellite images too!
Detects the internal gps nicely and downloads the maps via gprs - n.b. data cost!
here is the link http://map4pda.com/download.1.4.htm
btw MGMaps for java midlet manager does not work even with risodoro updated midlet manager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286604
but the new midlet manager is worth installing and does so without a problem.
Hi
Thank you, thank you and thank you once again. I was really blown away by Micro$oftLiveSearch and then this program comes along...oh boy...all I can say is F***ING AWESOME!!! I would say these two programs belong in the Extended ROM (or at least immediately installed after a Hard-Reset) of every GPS-capable device. Now I only need a new provider contract with worldwide unlimited GPRS/EDGE access ;-) .
I would say the Artemis (O2 Orbit) is the best buy I did last year. I really like this device allthough it's a bit lacking speed and storage and the small display needs getting used to (had an Alpine before).

Map 4 PDA
Hello folks, Im new to the forum and have a quick question to ask.
First off, thanks alot for the Map4PDA - I have the artemis and believe this software to be very useful and professional - especially given that its free. This is a great alternative to shelling out £100 on TomTom. However does anybody know how to download and store various maps onto your phone, for instance if I wanted to store a map of central London and one of central Glasgow - then that way I could easily check the maps on my phone whilst out on the streets for directions? Further to this, my phone is constantly trying to connect to my GPRS which is annoying, if I had the pre-stored maps and was just looking at them then the phone wouldn't do this right ?
Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum - I downloaded the maps connected to my pc & interner otherwise your gprs charges will be high. In the options set max no if images to 999 and no of files to 999.
The maps are kept in application data\searchquest\map4pda - so in theory you could download all the maps for a particular city and backup on your storage card. Then copy files back when in that city - a bit messy but works.
Also checkout windows live seach - http://wls.live.com/
I found it even better overall - I will add a writeup later.

Thanks for this Mark, I will await your reply! I have changed the settings to 999 for each but I am a little puzzled as to how to download and store the maps and also how to choose your map provider ? I am assuming thats what you mean when you point to windows live ? Maybe I'm being a complete dummy as this is all new to me! I used to own a Razor and cant believe how stupid I was, If I can get these maps that will be another area the phone blows the pants off of any other at the moment. Thanks for all your help!

No problem - to change map provider - menu\map\map provider and there is a choice of 4.
Goto menu\map\satellite view - is one bit i love!
To save maps - try this connect device via active sync to pc - go on internet on pc - do not enable gps unless you want maps for where you are - menu\map\move to location - put in you location and download the maps you want.
Then through file explorer goto \application data\searchquest\map4pda\
and there will be many files inside - if you look at these with pictures and video app you will see them.
You can copy and paste all these files and name them the city for later use.
Worldwide?
I tried putting in an Australian Post Code and it downloaded US maps. Is this a worldwide program?
Likewise, my UK postcode landed me in the middle of San Francisco... more than a few miles off!
It seems to be only accurate with the names not the post code.
GPS works a treat, though, I got a fix sitting in my office building with another room above me, a building in front of me, a building behind me and not much in the way of open sky. The result; an impressive satellite photo of the office with a big red target on it... disturbing!
Still, very cool app, it's just an address search improvement away from perfection.

I have these problems too but as you say you can just type in the address with the Nation at the end to solve those ones. I've done all those things you say Mark but another quick question, are you only able to view these maps through the video or pictures settings? It's just the size of the screen is small and its a pain to constantly flick through pictures to find the appropriate map. Is there any way that you can save the maps so that you can open your map4PDA software and just navigate within the software, i.e. if you had the maps you could just use the stylus to scroll around within the area of maps you have downloaded? Have I explained myself clearly ??
Its also a pain when moving across the screen to a tile of map you dont have then the machine goes into overdrive trying to connect to GPRS to download the maps!
Any help is again much appreciated

Yes once you have downloaded all the maps you need - you can look at the maps through map4pda - when the gprs starts to connect - click on it and press disconnect. Make sure the map is not in full screen so you can make sure its not connecting again - or turn the phone part off i.e. fllight mode - click on the signal strength meter.
Google Maps images dont show but all others do? - Artemis
Hi
I just downloaded Maps4PDA 1.4.7.19608 and it works great with the internal GPS in the Artemis (T-Mobile Compact 3), but when I choose Google Maps as the map provider it downloads the tiles but just shows a white square with a black cross... the other three map providers work perfectly... has anyone else seen this behaviour?
I did install the .net compact framework (even though maps4dpa worked without it) but it made no difference?
Thanks
Hi. I'm Map4PDA for my 8125. I would like to save driving directions that I download, but when I shut down my device and restart the device, the driving directions are gone. Plus, I would like to save more than one driving direction. How does one go about doing this if one's GPRS has already been deactivated? By the way, I don't have a GPS device and I'm wanting to use the program for driving directions. Thanks.

I am running into the same issue. After a while the map will come up, but it takes forever. When I switch to any other provider than goole the maps show up immediatley. I am alos unable to move the map to a location via a city name, postal code etc. the app seems to be searching but it locks up and never returns to the map. Anyone else experiencing this?
Sorry to repost, but does anyone know how to save driving directions on Map4PDA when one doesn't have a data access plan? Is there a way to save multiple driving directions (coming and going)?

Need some help with the built in GPS

Hello people, I've never come across the GPS settings on my phone and I have no clue on how to use it. I recently downloaded and installed a few cab files that use the built in GPS to give me the heading, speed etc...
Problem is, I always get a no GPS data available in every program i use. I was wondering if anyone knew the solution to my problem. Thanks guys!
Can anyone solve my issue please?
Are you trying to locate yourself indoors? You need to do this outdoors, and bear in mind that cold starts (each time you load the map program) take longer to synchronize with satellites - it takes up to 5 mins for me in a crowded city with tall buildings.
And if whatever program you are using can set options to configure GPS ports, try these manual settings:
COM port 6
Baudrate 57600

GPS hard to find satellites

Why is it taking so long to find satellites??? I have to wait about 3-5 minutes...
Any ideas on how to make it work faster?????
Never heard about this problem.
my one locks into GPS satellite within 30 sec of turning on the GPS every time.
maybe you need to turn on the use Wi-Fi to locate function from setting>location.
which help to locate itself by using wireless mast triangulation.
might boost the speed of GPS lock.
also get the app called GPS Test from market to see how many satellite your phone picks up.
it gives a detail breakdown of satellite info and number of satellites.
I tried that but I can see no difference.
Is there a programme like the one I used to have in windows mobile diamond2, that connects to internet and speed up the process???? I am talking about the one that needs to be updated every week, but I can't remember the name right now. . .
When i plug my phone into the car charger it cnt find gps
I think it was called QuickGPS?
I had it on my HTC Touch HD too.
I don't think there is such app for Android as the built-in triangulation via mobile network mast does it for you anyway.
You know how it shows your current location weather in the clock. also if you use Google map your location within 500 meters.
Try getting the GPS Test app from market for free to see if the phone is picking up any satellite at all.
if it's a brand new handset might be the chip is faulty. then you should be able to get an exchange as it should be easily demonstrated side by side on a working Desire.
Sorry could not be any more help, not much of an expert myself.
well there are a lot of more knowledge people in this forum some one might be able to help.
I will have a look around at other forum to see if anyone else came up with the same problem.
checked my phone just now and I still get GPS lock in 40 sec inside my house even though it's quite a bit cloudy in London today.
Gps locks in about 20 secs for me, however i always had problems until i factory defaulted since then it has worked perfectly

GPS receiver chip is not the cause of the problem

Guys,
According to this site, the problem with the GPS is the software Google Maps
Read this:
http://samsungi9000galaxys.com/galaxy-s-gps-review-sygic-gps-signal-and-gps-lock-times/
So it seems that using other Navigation software gives very good GPS performance.....
But how come using the GPS TEST software also shows that the GPS is loosing sattelites lock and erratic performance? I mean if the cause of the problem is the Google Map, testing the GPS receiver using GPS TEST should show good signal lock and stable reception isnt it?

It's a software setting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7281059
Other android devices have the same problem with a wrong setting.
Its not true, I tried google maps, co-pilot and NDrive and all gave really, really crappy gps performance. Upgrading to JG5 firmware has improved things a lot but its still pretty unusable for me.
You know I was just about to post that I think the issue is with google maps and not the phone. If I apply the ntp europe fix my gps locks very quickly and stays locked to within 16 feet in gps test when driving about.within google maps navigation the performance remains as shocking. Arrrggghhh!

I wish i could help testing the phone with different GPS/navigation software to validate the analysis, but I already sold my phone last week out of desperation due to the the GPS problem and lag problem and phone freeze problem and signal drop problem when you hold it a certain way....
but i love the design, size of the screen, the thinness of the phone and the super amoled display.....
Ouch...
Why did you not return your phone instead? I have never had my SGS freeze and I have never been able to drop a call by cupping the antenna, altough the signal strength does go down, wich it will on ALL phones with built in antennas since you are shilding the antenna... ( NOT SAME AS IPHONE4 design flaw where you shortcircuit 2 different antennas and that part seems particulary hard to grasp for some on this forum....)
But, to get on subject again, the GPS has been bad, that is for sure and I hope this is a step in the right direction.
Its clear that testing the gps is waaay too subjective and subject to too many factors. Applications have no effect on the gps performance.

My GPS seems to be very hit and miss, but it has worked on the several occasions that I have really needed it (getting lost).
And widjaja why are you still shambling about this forum when you sold your phone? get back under your bridge.
Once again, another thread started because someone made one change, tested it and it worked, then posted how great it was. Trouble is since the GPS can work fine for days on end, and then not work for days on end, these supposed cures are pretty much all wrong.
The GPS doesnt work, and so far there hasnt been a public explaination as to why, just lots of guesswork, and no fix has been released (in any of the firmwares available today). It's coming, but its not here yet.

Seems some phones work some dont.On jf3 my gps was shocking but on jg5 it has always been spot on with google navigation and co pilot and ive tested it a lot in all weathers. It has never lost lock and is always bang on with position.I even tested google maps satalite view in the car parked next to a tree and it had me right next to the tree-within 10 feet accuracy.I dont change any settings just leave it on whatever settings jg5 uses.Im in england if that makes any difference
Found a fix on another forum and its been working pretty well for me.
Enter *#*#1472365#*#* in the dialer to enter GPS settings and change the following:
Application Settings:
Operation Mode - MS Based
Use SkyHook - ON
Accuracy - 30
SUPL/CP Settings :
Server - supl.google.com
Server Port - 7276
SUPL Secure Socket - OFF
I was having problems with 3G and WIFI with these settings at first, so I left Operation Mode on Standalone and Skyhook OFF. Works great now. Just tested it and got 9 satellite locks and 5 in use.

I'm in Hong Kong btw running local JF7 firmware. Hope this helps.
I'm almost convinced that most of the problems people are having is down to google maps. I'm not saying that tweaking the settings as people have, inc me, doesn't improve maters, but I believe there is an underlying compatibility issue between google maps and the galaxy which is making the issue seem worse than it is.
If I leave gps test running while driving I get at worst a lock down to 32 feet, speed is accurate and never lose lock even when on roads totally covered with big wet trees. It looks spot on.
Google maps navigation can't even get me in an accurate position when stationary, start driving and its bloody awful jumps all over the place and sometimes doesn't even move for 30 seconds after I've pulled away from a junction.
I've updated my supl settings to use google (manually edited the conf file, I don't use the hidden menu screen because even if you change nothing it makes changes to the conf file on exit, delete the file and reboot to refresh it) and updated my ntp settings to use europe.
In the jg5 rom google maps is built in, so I can't reinstall it or seem to be able to clear the cache to see if that helps in anyway.
It wouldn't surprise me if any gps fixed rom released by samsung contains a tweaked version of google maps that works.

[Q] Are GPS and videorecording compatible ?

I found the strangle problem with my new HTC Desire HD: GPS lost satellites in the case of camera in the video recording mode.
First concern arose when using the device as a DVR: VideoReg, DailyRoads Voyager, AutoGuard. In all cases I have gps data loss.
As an experiment I ran the program gpstest and the original camera software - GPS have problems with the satellites when camera is recording video
What could it be ???
Factory firmware with OTA upgrade.
The GPS is only active when an app which uses the GPS is active. So if you switch to an app today does not use GPS, the function is turned off.

I understand it of course
DVR's are using GPS and camera by self, in the tests I used gps application in the background (navitel navigator and GPS status).
Oh I see. I don't know what's wronng. Never used any of the apps you mentionned above.
I am the developer of DailyRoads Voyager. There is quite a large number of users who run Voyager concurrently with navigation apps, without having problems with the GPS fix. But, not on the Desire HD
I have made some extensive changes in the code which handles GPS. Would any of you like to test this new version?
Thanks,
Robert
i would test if you send it to me?
just found it in the market and downloading it.
The version on the Android Market most likely has the same issues described above. The new version for test can be downloaded from here:http://dailyroads.com/voyager/test/4/dailyroads.apk
Please test for at least 2 minutes, because listening for GPS will be restarted after 30 seconds, and then again after 1 minute.
This version also creates a log file (DailyRoadsLog.txt) in the root folder of the
SD card. When you're done with the tests, please send this file to [email protected]
Thanks,
Robert
Did anybody resolve the issue? I have the same problem with my Inspire 4G. When the camera is active the GPS wont't fix. Once the camera is off the fix occurs immediately
hi, same problem (still) here. no programm works when it combines camera/GPS.
just installed DailyRoads Voyager and will try 'n' see if I can do the tests and send the doc. maybe it'll help.
PS contacted HTC a while ago, simple reaction "your GPS is working as wel las your camera. you don't have a problem then...." welll, discussing here is more than limited, even when sying tt both together don't work...
Hi, found via Robert (daily road travel ) found via russian forums the following : add an external b/t gps receiver, download a small app from the market which links the receiver to the phone and done !
Ok, it's a workaround but a working one !
Cheers
